Abstract:The topological phonon state of quantum matter is an emerging field that has been attracting considerable interest. For instance, Weyl phonons in transition-metal monosilicides have been proposed theoretically and identified experimentally. However, topological phonon nodal net states are not well studied due to the lack of realistic materials. Here, based on first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose an existing material---cuprous oxide---to host the nodal net phonons. The nontrivial phonon surface states and uncovered phononic arcs are clearly visible on $k$-resolved phonon spectra, which are amenable to experimental detection. Our findings offer a possible platform for realizing topologically nontrivial phonon states and their applications.

Abstract:Halide perovskites emerged as a revolutionary family of high-quality semiconductors for solar energy harvesting and energy-efficient lighting. There is mounting evidence that the exceptional optoelectronic properties of these materials could stem from unconventional electron-phonon couplings, and it has been suggested that the formation of polarons and self-trapped excitons could be key to understanding such properties. By performing first-principles simulations with unprecedented detail across the length scales, here we show that halide perovskites harbor a uniquely rich variety of polaronic species, including small polarons, large polarons, and charge density waves, and we explain a variety of experimental observations. We find that these emergent quasiparticles support topologically nontrivial phonon fields with quantized topological charge, making them the first non-magnetic analog of the helical Bloch points found in magnetic skyrmion lattices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are able to strongly confine light hybridized with collective excitations of atoms, enabling electric-field enhancements and novel spectroscopic applications. Recently, freestanding monolayers of oxide perovskites have been synthesized, which possess highly infrared-active phonon modes and a complex interplay of competing interactions. In this study, we evaluate central figures of merit for phonon polaritons in the tetragonal phases of the 2D perovskites SrTiO$_3$, KTaO$_3$, and LiNbO$_3$, using density functional theory calculations. Specifically, we compute the 2D phonon-polariton dispersions, the propagation-quality, confinement, and deceleration factors, and we show that they are comparable to those found in the prototypical 2D dielectric hexagonal boron nitride. Our results suggest that monolayers of oxide perovskites are promising candidates for polaritonic platforms in the terahertz spectral range that enable possibilites to control complex phases of matter through strongly enhanced electromagnetic fields.

Abstract:Strong light-matter interaction enriches topological photonics by dressing light with matter, which provides the possibility to realize tuneable topological devices with immunity to defects. Topological exciton polaritons, half-light half-matter quasiparticles with giant optical nonlinearity represent a unique platform for active topological photonics with phase tunability. Previous demonstrations of exciton polariton topological insulators still demand cryogenic temperatures and their topological properties are usually fixed without phase tunability. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a room-temperature exciton polariton topological insulator with active phase tunability in a perovskite zigzag lattice. Polarization serves as a degree of freedom to control the reversible transition between distinct topological phases, thanks to the polarization-dependent anisotropy in halide perovskite microcavities. The topologically nontrivial polariton states localized in the edges persist in the presence of a natural defect, showing strong immunity to disorder. We further demonstrate that exciton polaritons can condense into the topological edge states under optical pumping. These results provide an ideal platform for realizing tuneable topological polaritonic devices with room-temperature operation, which can find important applications in optical control, modulation and switching.

Topological superconductivity from transverse optical phonons in oxide heterostructures

Abstract:A topological superconductor features at its boundaries and vortices Majorana fermions, which are potentially applicable for topological quantum computations. The scarcity of the known experimentally verified physical systems with topological superconductivity, time-reversal invariant ones in particular, is giving rise to a strong demand for identifying new candidate materials. In this research, we study a heterostructure consisting of a transition metal oxide two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) sandwiched by insulators near the paraelectric (PE) / ferroelectric (FE) phase transition. Its relevant characteristics is the combination of the transition metal spin-orbit coupling and the soft odd-parity phonons arising from the ferroelectric fluctuation; it gives rise to the fluctuating Rashba effect, which can mediate the pairing interaction for time-reversal invariant topological superconductivity. As the PE / FE phase transition can be driven by applying strain on the heterostructure, this system provides a tunable electron-phonon coupling. Through the first-principle calculations on the (001) [BaOsO3][BaTiO3]4, we find such electron-phonon coupling to be strong over a wide range of applied tensile bi-axial strain in the monolayer BaOsO3 sandwiched between the (001) BaTiO3, hence qualifying it as a good candidate material. Furthermore, the stability of topological superconductivity in this material is enhanced by its orbital physics that gives rise to the anisotropic dispersion.

Topological phononics arising from fluid-solid interactions

Abstract:Nontrivial band topologies have been discovered in classical systems and hold great potential for device applications. Unlike photons, sound has fundamentally different dynamics and symmetries in fluids and solids, represented as scalar and vector fields, respectively. So far, searches for topological phononic materials have only concerned sound in either fluids or solids alone, overlooking their intricate interactions in "mixtures". Here, we report an approach for topological phononics employing such unique interplay, and demonstrate the realization of type-II nodal rings, elusive in phononics, in a simple three-dimensional phononic crystal. Type-II nodal rings, as line degeneracies in momentum space with exotic properties from strong tilting, are directly observed through ultrasonic near-field scanning. Strongly tilted drumhead surface states, the hallmark phenomena, are also experimentally demonstrated. This phononic approach opens a door to explore topological physics in classical systems, which is easy to implement that can be used for designing high-performance acoustic devices.

Abstract:Phonons, as the most fundamental emergent bosons in condensed matter systems, play an essential role in the thermal, mechanical, and electronic properties of crystalline materials. Recently, the concept of topology has been introduced to phonon systems, and the nontrivial topological states also exist in phonons due to the constraint by the crystal symmetry of the space group. Although the classification of various topological phonons has been enriched theoretically, experimental studies were limited to several three-dimensional (3D) single crystals with inelastic x-ray or neutron scatterings. The experimental evidence of topological phonons in two-dimensional (2D) materials is absent. Here, using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy following our theoretical predictions, we directly map out the phonon spectra of the atomically thin graphene in the entire 2D Brillouin zone, and observe two nodal-ring phonons and four Dirac phonons. The closed loops of nodal-ring phonons and the conical structure of Dirac phonons in 2D momentum space are clearly revealed by our measurements, in nice agreement with our theoretical calculations. The ability of 3D mapping (2D momentum space and energy space) of phonon spectra opens up a new avenue to the systematic identification of the topological phononic states. Abstract:Recently, the emergence of van Hove singularity, flat band, and Dirac cone in kagome materials has attracted tremendous interest as they are closely related to the superconductivity. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose these features can be realized in the topological pervoskites ACPd3 (A=Mg, Ca, Sr) . In particular, the Dirac point is observed near the Fermi level with the spin-orbit coupling. The superconducting transition temperature Tc is estimated to be 19.05, 15.37, and 10.25 K for MgCPd3 , CaCPd3 , and SrCPd3 by solving the Allen-Dynes modified McMillan formula, respectively. In general, the high Tc can be attributed to the large electronic density of states near the Fermi level, which arises from the van Hove singularity and flat band. Noticeably, the declining trend of Tc from MgCPd3 to SrCPd3 can be ascribed to the decreasing electron-phonon coupling that is related to the weakening of electron correlation. This point is further verified by doping holes (electrons) in CaCPd3 , i.e., the Tc would gradually increase to 18.41 K when the flat band gets more and more dispersionless. Abstract:Organic-inorganic layered perovskites are two-dimensional quantum well layers in which the layers of lead halide octahedra are stacked between the organic cation layers. The packing geometry of the soft organic molecules and the stiff ionic crystals induce structural deformation of the inorganic octahedra, generating complex lattice dynamics. Especially, the dielectric confinement and ionic sublattice lead to strong coupling between the photogenerated excitons and the phonons from the polar lattice which intensively affects the properties for device applications. The anharmonicity and dynamic disorder from the organic cations participate in the relaxation dynamics coupled with excitations. However, a detailed understanding of this underlying mechanism remains obscure. This work investigates the electron-optical phonon coupling dynamics by employing ultrafast pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy. The activated different optical phonon modes are observed via systematic studies of (PEA) 2 PbBr 4 perovskite films on the ultrafast lattice vibrational dynamics. The experimental results indicate that solvent engineering has a significant influence on lattice vibrational modes and coherent phonon dynamics. This work provides fresh insights into electron-optical phonon coupling for emergent optoelectronics development based on layered perovskites.

Effects of light on quantum phases and topological properties of two-dimensional Metal-organic frameworks

Abstract:Periodically driven nontrivial quantum states open another door to engineer topological phases in solid systems by light. Here we show, based on the Floquet-Bloch theory, that the on-resonant linearly and circularly polarized infrared light brings in the exotic Floquet quantum spin Hall state and half-metal in two-dimensional Metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) because of the unbroken and broken time-reversal symmetry, respectively. We also observe that the off-resonant light triggers topological quantum phase transitions and induces semimetals with pseudospin-1 Dirac-Weyl fermions via the photon-dressed topological band structures of 2D MOFs. This work paves a way to design light-controlled spintronics and optoelectronics based on 2D MOFs.

Abstract:Phonons play a crucial role in many properties of solid state systems, such as thermal and electrical conductivity, neutron scattering and associated effects or superconductivity. Hence, it is expected that topological phonons will also lead to rich and unconventional physics and the search of materials hosting topological phonons becomes a priority in the field. In electronic crystalline materials, a large part of the topological properties of Bloch states can be indicated by their symmetry eigenvalues in reciprocal space. This has been adapted to the high-throughput calculations of topological materials, and more than half of the stoichiometric materials on the databases are found to be topological insulators or semi-metals. Based on the existing phonon materials databases, here we have performed the first catalogue of topological phonon bands for more than ten thousand three-dimensional crystalline materials. Using topological quantum chemistry, we calculate the band representations, compatibility relations, and band topologies of each isolated set of phonon bands for the materials in the phonon databases. We have also calculated the real space invariants for all the topologically trivial bands and classified them as atomic and obstructed atomic bands. In particular, surface phonon modes (dispersion) are calculated on different cleavage planes for all the materials. Remarkably, we select more than one thousand "ideal" non-trivial phonon materials to fascinate the future experimental studies. All the data-sets obtained in the the high-throughput calculations are used to build a Topological Phonon Database.

Rotor-phonon coupling in perovskite CH3NH3PbI3: the origin of exceptional transport properties

Abstract:Atomic dynamics takes a fundamental part in numbers of physical properties of solids like high-Tc superconductivity, semiconducting transports, and thermoelectricity. Perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 exhibits outstanding photovoltaic performances, but the exact physical scenario has not been established yet, due to the inadequate understanding of the atomic dynamics and exceptional transport properties. We present a complete atomic dynamic picture consisting of phonons, rotational modes of protons and molecular vibrational modes, which is constructed by carrying out high-resolution time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements in a wide energy window ranging from 0.0036 to 54 meV on a large single crystal sample. A three-fold rotational mode of protons activated around 80 K reduces the lifetimes of acoustic and optical phonons down to about 4.5 ps and below 1 ps at 150 K, respectively. The orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition takes place with a slower four-fold rotational mode of the C-N axis concomitantly setting in at ~ 165 K, above which the optical phonons are too broadened to be distinguished whereas the acoustic ones are still robust. The significantly reduced lifetimes of optical phonons are linked to the smaller mobility of charge carriers while the ultralow lattice thermal conductivity is attributed to nanoscale mean free paths of acoustic phonons. These microscopic insights provide a solid standing point, on which perovskite solar cells can be understood more accurately and their performances are perhaps further optimized. The revealed rotor-phonon coupling opens up an emergent opportunity to create unprecedented functionalities of materials.

Ubiquitous topological states of phonons in solids: Silicon as a model material

Abstract:Research on topological physics of phonons has attracted enormous interest but demands appropriate model materials. Our {\it ab initio} calculations identify silicon as an ideal candidate material containing extraordinarily rich topological phonon states. In silicon, we identify various topological nodal lines protected by glide mirror or mirror symmetries and characterized by quantized Berry phase $\pi$, which gives drumhead surface states observable from any surface orientations. Remarkably, a novel type of topological nexus phonon is discovered, which is featured by double Fermi-arc-like surface states and distinguished from Weyl phonons by requiring neither inversion nor time-reversal symmetry breaking. Versatile topological states can be created from the nexus phonons, such as Hopf nodal link by strain. Furthermore, we generalize the symmetry analysis to other centrosymmetric systems and find numerous candidate materials, demonstrating the ubiquitous existence of topological phonons in solids. These findings open up new opportunities for studying topological phonons in realistic materials and their influence on surface physics.

On the basis of the existing phonon materials databases, we have compiled a catalog of topological phonon bands for more than 10,000 three-dimensional crystalline materials. Using topological quantum chemistry, we calculated the band representations, compatibility relations, and band topologies of each isolated set of phonon bands for the materials in the phonon databases. Additionally, we calculated the real-space invariants for all the topologically trivial bands and classified them as atomic or obstructed atomic bands. We have selected more than 1000 "ideal" nontrivial phonon materials to motivate future experiments. The datasets were used to build the Topological Phonon Database.

Abstract:The recent observations of exotic quantum phenomena in AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) kagome superconductors have attracted significant attention in materials physics. Here, we propose an innovative two-frequencies laser model for ultrafast control of transient structural distortions. Using first-principles density functional theory in conjunction with the perturbative regime of nonlinear phononics, we investigate the nonharmonic potential energy, the crystal lattice dynamics and the topological properties of CsV 3 Sb 5 . We find that driving two infrared-active phonons of different frequencies promotes the desired Raman phonon vibrations, in which the displacement of Sb atoms is closely related to superconductivity. We demonstrate that the dimensional crossover and the topological nontrivial to trivial state transition of superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 can be triggered by ultrafast optical control. This work can be applied to other layered quantum materials and provide guidance for experiments related to photoinduced topology and superconductivity.

Computation and data driven discovery of topological phononic materials

Abstract:The discovery of topological quantum states marks a new chapter in both condensed matter physics and materials sciences. By analogy to spin electronic system, topological concepts have been extended into phonons, boosting the birth of topological phononics (TPs). Here, we present a high-throughput screening and data-driven approach to compute and evaluate TPs among over 10,000 materials. We have clarified 5014 TP materials and classified them into single Weyl, high degenerate Weyl, and nodal-line (ring) TPs. Among them, three representative cases of TPs have been discussed in detail. Furthermore, we suggest 322 TP materials with potential clean nontrivial surface states, which are favorable for experimental characterizations. This work significantly increases the current library of TP materials, which enables an in-depth investigation of their structure-property relations and opens new avenues for future device design related to TPs.

Abstract:Classical-wave topological materials lacking intrinsic half-integer spins are less robust while more tunable. Here, we explore a single 3-dimensional phononic topological crystalline insulator that simultaneously exhibits a whole family of first-order quadratic surface, second-order hinge, and third-order corner states within the same bandgap. Such a topological crystalline insulator hosting all-order phases originates from the different topological nature when hierarchically projected onto different facets and lower dimensions, thus free from trivial cladding crystals. Our work offers an ideal platform for either robust wave propagation or localization in on-demand dimensions and may facilitate dimension division multiplexing technology.

Topological Phases in Oxide Heterostructures with Light and Heavy Transition Metal Ions

Abstract:Using a combination of density functional theory, tight-binding models, and Hartree-Fock theory, we predict topological phases with and without time-reversal symmetry breaking in oxide heterostructures. We consider both heterostructures containing light transition metal ions, and those containing heavy transition metal ions. We find the (111) growth direction naturally leads to favorable conditions for topological phases in both perovskite structures and pyrochlore structures. For the case of light transition metal elements, Hartree-Fock theory predicts the spin-orbit coupling is effectively enhanced by on-site multiple-orbital interactions and may drive the system through a topological phase transition, while heavy elements with intrinsically large spin-orbit coupling require much weaker, or even vanishing electron interactions to bring about a topological phase.

Abstract:Materials exhibiting topological order host exotic phenomena that could form the basis for novel developments in areas ranging from low-power electronics to quantum computers. The past decade has witnessed multiple experimental realizations and thousands of predictions of topological materials. However, it has been determined that increasing temperature destroys topological order, restricting many topological materials to very low temperatures and thus hampering practical applications. Here, we propose a material realization of temperature promoted topological order. We show that a semiconducting oxide that has been widely used in lead-acid batteries, $\beta$-PbO$_2$, hosts a topological semimetallic phase driven by both thermal expansion and electron-phonon coupling upon increasing temperature. We identify the interplay between the quasi-two-dimensional nature of the charge distribution of the valence band with the three-dimensional nature of the charge distribution of the conduction band as the microscopic mechanism driving this unconventional temperature dependence. Thus, we propose a general principle to search for and design novel topological materials whose topological order is stabilized by increasing temperature. This provides a clear roadmap for taking topological materials from the laboratory to technological devices.
