Abstract:We develop a theory of multiplicities and mixed multiplicities of filtrations, extending the theory for filtrations of m-primary ideals to arbitrary (not necessarily Noetherian) filtrations. The mixed multiplicities of r filtrations on an analytically unramified local ring R come from the coefficients of a suitable homogeneous polynomial in r variables of degree equal to the dimension of the ring, analogously to the classical case of the mixed multiplicities of m-primary ideals in a local ring. We prove that the Minkowski inequalities hold for arbitrary filtrations. The characterization of equality in the Minkowski inequality for m-primary ideals in a local ring by Teissier, Rees and Sharp and Katz does not extend to arbitrary filtrations, but we show that they are true in a large and important subcategory of filtrations. We define divisorial and bounded filtrations. The filtration of powers of a fixed ideal is a bounded filtration, as is a divisorial filtration. We show that in an excellent local domain, the characterization of equality in the Minkowski equality is characterized by the condition that the integral closures of suitable Rees like algebras are the same, strictly generalizing the theorem of Teissier, Rees and Sharp and Katz. We also prove that a theorem of Rees characterizing the inclusion of ideals with the same multiplicity generalizes to bounded filtrations in excellent local domains. We give a number of other applications, extending classical theorems for ideals.

Irrationality of generic quotient varieties via Bogomolov multipliers

Abstract:The Bogomolov multiplier of a group is the unramified Brauer group associated to the quotient variety of a faithful representation of the group. This object is an obstruction for the quotient variety to be stably rational. The purpose of this paper is to study these multipliers associated to nilpotent pro-$p$ groups by transporting them to their associated Lie algebras. Special focus is set on the case of $p$-adic Lie groups of nilpotency class $2$, where we analyse the moduli space. This is then applied to give information on asymptotic behaviour of multipliers of finite images of such groups of exponent $p$. We show that with fixed $n$ and increasing $p$, a positive proportion of these groups of order $p^n$ have trivial multipliers. On the other hand, we show that by fixing $p$ and increasing $n$, log-generic groups of order $p^n$ have non-trivial multipliers. Whence quotient varieties of faithful representations of log-generic $p$-groups are not stably rational. Applications in non-commutative Iwasawa theory are developed.

Convexity of multiplicities of filtrations on local rings

Abstract:We prove that the multiplicity of a filtration of a local ring satisfies various convexity properties. In particular, we show the multiplicity is convex along geodesics. As a consequence, we prove that the volume of a valuation is log convex on simplices of quasi-monomial valuations and give a new proof of a theorem of Xu and Zhuang on the uniqueness of normalized volume minimizers. In another direction, we generalize a theorem of Rees on multiplicities of ideals to filtrations and characterize when the Minkowski inequality for filtrations is an equality under mild assumptions.

Multiplier ideals of normal surface singularities

Abstract:We study the multiplier ideals and the corresponding jumping numbers and multiplicities $\{m(c)\}_{c\in \mathbb{R}}$ in the following context: $(X,o)$ is a complex analytic normal surface singularity, ${\mathfrak a}\subset \mathcal{O}_{X,o}$ is an ${\mathfrak m}_{X,o}$--primary ideal, $\phi:\widetilde{X}\to X$ is a log resolution of $\mathfrak{a}$ such that $\mathfrak{a}\mathcal{O}_{\widetilde{X}}=\mathcal{O}_{\widetilde{X}}(-F)$, for some nonzero effective divisor $F$ supported on $\phi^{-1}(0)$. We show that $\{m(c)\}_{c>0}$ is combinatorially computable from $F$ and the resolution graph $\Gamma$ of $\phi$, and we provide several formulae. We also extend Budur's result (valid for $(X,o)=(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$), which makes an identification of $\sum_{c\in[0,1]}m(c)t^c$ with a certain Hodge spectrum. In our general case we use Hodge spectrum with coefficients in a mixed Hodge module. We show that $\{m(c)\}_{c\leq 0}$ usually depends on the analytic type of $(X,o)$. However, for some distinguished analytic types we determine it concretely. E.g., when $(X,o)$ is weighted homogeneous (and $F$ is associated with the central vertex), we recover $\sum_cm(c)t^c$ from the Poincaré series of $(X,o)$ and when $(X,o)$ is a splice quotient then we recover $\sum_cm(c)t^c$ from the multivariable topological Poincaré (zeta) function of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the following problem: for a given bounded positive function f on a filtered probability space can we find another function (a multiplier) m , , such that the function mf is not "too small" but its square function is bounded? We explicitly show how to construct such multipliers for the usual martingale square function and for so-called conditional square function. Besides that, we show that for the usual square function more general statement can be obtained by application of a non-constructive abstract correction theorem by Kislyakov.

Hilbert-Samuel Polynomials for Algebras with Special Filtrations

Abstract:The notion of multiplicity of a module first arose as consequence of Hilbert's work on commutative algebra, relating the dimension of rings with the degree of certain polynomials. For noncommutative rings, the notion of multiplicity first appeared in the context of modules for the Weyl algebra in Bernstein's solution of the problem of analytic continuation posed by I. Gelfand. The notion was shown to be useful to many more noncommutative rings, especially enveloping algebras, rings of differential operators, and quantum groups. In all these cases, the existence of multiplicity is related to the existence of Hilbert-Samuel polynomials. In this work we give an axiomatic definition of algebras with a notion of multiplicity, which we call very nice and modest algebras. We show, in an abstract setting, how the existence of Hilbert-Samuel polynomials implies the existence of a notion of multiplicity. We apply our results for the category of min-holonomic modules -- a notion which coincides with holonomic modules for simple algebras -- and that shares many similarities with it. In particular, we generalize the usual results in the literature that are stated for Ore domains, in the more general context of prime algebras, and we show that rational Cherednik algebras admit a notion of multiplicity.

Abstract:We prove the results about mixed Buchsbaum--Rim multiplicities announced in (9.10)(ii) on p.224 of our recent paper [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://J.Alg" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.(1994)], including a general mixed-multiplicity formula. In addition, we identify these multiplicities as the coefficients of the ``leading form'' of the appropriate Buchsbaum-Rim polynomial in three variables, and we prove a positivity theorem. In fact, we define the multiplicities as the degrees of certain zero-dimensional ``mixed twisted'' Segre classes, and we develop an encompassing general theory of these new rational equivalence classes in all dimensions. In parallel, we develop a theory of pure ``twisted'' Segre classes, and we recover the main results in [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://J.Alg" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.(1994)] about the pure Buchsbaum--Rim multiplicities, the polar multiplicities, and so forth. Moreover, we identify the additivity theorem [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://J.Alg" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.(1994), (6.7b)(i), p.205] as giving a sort of residual-intersection formula, and we show its (somewhat unexpected) connection to the mixed-multiplicity formula. Also, we work in a more general setup than before, and we develop a new approach, based on the completed normal cone.

Abstract:Let $S\to C$ be a smooth quasi-projective surface properly fibered onto a smooth curve. We prove that the multiplicativity of the perverse filtration on $H^*(S^{[n]},\mathbb{Q})$ associated with the natural map $S^{[n]}\to C^{(n)}$ implies that $S\to C$ is an elliptic fibration. The converse is also true when $S\to C$ is a Hitchin-type elliptic fibration.

Higher multiplier ideals

Abstract:We associate a family of ideal sheaves to any Q-effective divisor on a complex manifold, called the higher multiplier ideals, using the theory of mixed Hodge modules and V-filtrations. This family is indexed by two parameters, an integer indicating the Hodge level and a rational number, and these ideals admit a weight filtration. When the Hodge level is zero, they recover the usual multiplier ideals. We study the local and global properties of higher multiplier ideals systematically. In particular, we prove vanishing theorems and restriction theorems, and provide criteria for the nontriviality of the new ideals. The main idea is to exploit the global structure of the V-filtration along an effective divisor using the notion of twisted Hodge modules. In the local theory, we introduce the notion of the center of minimal exponent, which generalizes the notion of minimal log canonical center. As applications, we prove some cases of conjectures by Debarre, Casalaina-Martin and Grushevsky on singularities of theta divisors on principally polarized abelian varieties and the geometric Riemann-Schottky problem.

The Rees algebra and analytic spread of a divisorial filtration

Abstract:In this paper we investigate some properties of Rees algebras of divisorial filtrations and their analytic spread. A classical theorem of McAdam shows that the analytic spread of an ideal $I$ in a formally equidimensional local ring is equal to the dimension of the ring if and only if the maximal ideal is an associated prime of $R/\overline{I^n}$ for some $n$. We show in Theorem 1.6 that McAdam's theorem holds for $\mathbb Q$-divisorial filtrations in an equidimensional local ring which is essentially of finite type over a field. This generalizes an earlier result for $\mathbb Q$-divisorial filtrations in an equicharacteristic zero excellent local domain by the author. This theorem does not hold for more general filtrations. We consider the question of the asymptotic behavior of the function $n\mapsto \lambda_R(R/I_n)$ for a $\mathbb Q$-divisorial filtration $\mathcal I=\{I_n\}$ of $m_R$-primary ideals on a $d$-dimensional normal excellent local ring. It is known from earlier work of the author that the multiplicity $$ e(\mathcal I)=d! \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\lambda_R(R/I_n)}{n^d} $$ can be irrational. We show in Lemma 4.1 that the limsup of the first difference function $$ \limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\lambda_R(I_n/I_{n+1})}{n^{d-1}} $$ is always finite for a $\mathbb Q$-divisorial filtration. We then give an example in Section 4 showing that this limsup may not exist as a limit. In the final section, we give an example of a symbolic filtration $\{P^{(n)}\}$ of a prime ideal $P$ in a normal two dimensional excellent local ring which has the property that the set of Rees valuations of all the symbolic powers $P^{(n)}$ of $P$ is infinite.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that a classical theorem by McAdam about the analytic spread of an ideal in a Noetherian local ring continues to be true for divisorial filtrations on a two dimensional normal excellent local ring $R$, and that the Hilbert polynomial of the fiber cone of a divisorial filtration on $R$ has a Hilbert function which is the sum of a linear polynomial and a bounded function. We prove these theorems by first studying asymptotic properties of divisors on a resolution of singularities of the spectrum of $R$. The filtration of the symbolic powers of an ideal is an example of a divisorial filtration. Divisorial filtrations are often not Noetherian, giving a significant difference in the classical case of filtrations of powers of ideals and divisorial filtrations.

Abstract:In previous papers, the authors computed the Poincaré series of some (multi-index) filtrations on the ring of germs of functions on a rational surface singularity. These Poincaré series were expressed as the integer parts of certain fractional power series, whose interpretation was not given. In this paper, we show that, up to a simple change of variables, these fractional power series are reductions of the equivariant Poincaré series for filtrations on the ring of germs of functions on the universal Abelian cover of the surface. We compute these equivariant Poincaré series.

Abstract:We define a class of finite integer sequences called "integer mixtures", which are generalizations of partitions, compositions and unimodal sequences. We introduce unusual forms of $q$-series that combine generating functions for partitions and compositions, to prove generating functions for newly defined types of integer mixtures like multimodal sequences and spliced compositions. We prove compositions with $k$-colored splices are in bijection with the $k$-compositions recently studied by Hopkins-Ouvry.

Abstract:A. Vershik discovered that filtrations indexed by the non-positive integers may have a paradoxical asymptotic behaviour near the time $$-\infty $$, called non-standardness. For example, two dyadic filtrations with trivial tail $$\sigma $$-field are not necessarily isomorphic. Yet, from any essentially separable filtration indexed by the non-positive integers, one can extract a subsequence which is a standard filtration. In this paper, we focus on the non-standard filtrations which become standard if (and only if) infinitely many integers are skipped. We call them filtrations at the threshold of standardness, since they are as close to standardardness as they can be although they are non-standard. Two classes of filtrations are studied, first the filtrations of the split-words processes, second some filtrations inspired by an unpublished example of B. Tsirelson. They provide examples which disprove some naive intuitions. For example, it is possible to have a standard filtration extracted from a non-standard one with no intermediate (for extraction) filtration at the threshold of standardness. It is also possible to have a filtration which provides a standard filtration on the even times but a non-standard filtration on the odd times.

In particular, the fibres of a \sigma-finite morphism between difference curves are all of the same size, when counted with correct multiplicities.

Abstract:This paper explores the properties of multipliers associated with discrete analogues of fractional integrals, revealing intriguing connections with Dirichlet characters, Euler's identity, and Dedekind zeta functions of quadratic imaginary fields. Employing Fourier transform techniques, the Hardy–Littlewood circle method, and a discrete analogue of the Stein–Weiss inequality on product space through implication methods, we establish lp→lq bounds for these operators. Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between number theory and harmonic analysis in discrete domains, offering insights into the convergence behavior of these operators.

Abstract:We give an expression for the {\L}ojasiewicz exponent of a wide class of n-tuples of ideals $(I_1,..., I_n)$ in $\O_n$ using the information given by a fixed Newton filtration. In order to obtain this expression we consider a reformulation of {\L}ojasiewicz exponents in terms of Rees mixed multiplicities. As a consequence, we obtain a wide class of semi-weighted homogeneous functions $(\mathbb{C}^n,0)\to (\mathbb{C},0)$ for which the {\L}ojasiewicz of its gradient map $\nabla f$ attains the maximum possible value.
