Abstract:As a plasmonic analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) has been widely studied duo to the excellent performance on sensing, slow light and enhancing nonlinear effects, which has great potential to be applied on compact optical communication system. Here, we introduce an all-optical PIT multi-channel switching based on the metal–insulator–metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide device with small footprint. Single/double PIT is investigated both theoretically and numerically by multi-oscillator theory (MOT) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), and utilizing the nonlinear medium filled in the cavity, the PIT can be dynamically tunable to achieve various kinds of single/multi-channel switching for telecommunication wavelengths. Besides, utilizing the unprecedented high Kerr coefficient of graphene, the low-power and ultrafast all-optical switching can be made possible. This work provides a novel scheme to realize all-optical switching based on PIT, which can promote on-chip ultrafast optical communication and signal processing.
Dynamically configurable successively switchable multispectral plasmon induced transparency

Abstract:Plasmon-induced-transparency (PIT) in nanostructures has been intensively investigated, however, no existing metasurface nanostructure exhibits all-optically tunable properties, where the number of transparency windows can be tuned successively, and switched to off-state. Here, we theoretically investigate and demonstrate dynamically tunable, multichannel PIT at optical frequencies. The inplane destructive interference between bright and dark dipolar resonances in coupled plasmonic nanobar topologies is exploited to produce tunable PIT with unique characteristics. In particular, we demonstrate sequential polarization-selective multispectral operation whereby the number of PIT channels can be varied successively from '3' to '0'. The results provide a promising route for active manipulation of PIT and show potential applications for multifunctional dynamic nanophotonics devices.

Novel Terahertz Optical Switch Based on PIT Phenomenon and Lorentz Theory

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a structure consisting of graphene rings and square rings that enables broadband and tunable plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) effects. Through coupled Lorentz model analysis, we attribute the transmission window at 2.1 THz to the interference between the equipartitioned exciton resonance of the graphene ring pairs and the inductive-capacitive resonance of the graphene square ring pairs. We also investigate the effect of the variation of the rotation angle of the internal graphene square ring pair on the transmission characteristics. The structure not only achieves a maximum modulation depth (MDA) of 91%, insertion loss (IL) and extinction ratio (ER) of 0.3 dB and 10.94 dB, respectively, but also achieves a maximum detection sensitivity of 0.96 THz/refractive index unit (RIU). In contrast, this study achieves more than 90% modulation amplitude in the range of 0.3 THz with a simple design structure, providing new insights for research and applications in related fields.
Tunable Terahertz Graphene Metamaterial Optical Switches and Sensors Based on Plasma-Induced Transparency

Abstract:A periodic metamaterial comprising three graphene-strips and four C-type graphene square-ring is proposed herein to realize plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). Based on the characteristics of graphene dynamic mod-ulation, we effectively broaden of the transparent window the relative bandwidth to realize the broadband PIT. The influence of the polarized light angle on PIT is investigated, demonstrating that the polarization angle affects PIT significantly, the dynamic change from multiple plasma-induced transparency to single-PIT can be realized. By tuning the Fermi levels in the graphene, our proposed metamaterial structure allows preparing not only a multi-frequency optical switch with modulation degrees of the amplitude (MDA) up to 95.6% and insertion loss (IL) down to 0.315 dB at 5.35 THz but also preparing optical switches with MDA > 90% and IL < 0.35 dB in bands ranging from 5.28 to 5.48 THz. The refractive index sensitivity of metamaterials is also investigated, and the simulation results show that a sensitivity of 0.7 THz/RIU is achieved, meaning an excellent sensors can be prepared. Thus, the proposed structure provides a new idea for the design of terahertz multi-frequency switches and refractive index sensors.

Abstract:Dynamical manipulation of plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in metamaterials promises numerous potential applications; however, previously reported approaches require complex metamaterial structures or an external stimulus, and dynamic control is limited to a single PIT transparency window. We propose here a metamaterial with a simple structure to realize a dynamically controllable PIT effect. Simply by changing the polarization direction of incident light, the number of PIT transparency windows can be increased from 1 to 2, accompanied by a tunable amplitude and a switchable resonance-wavelength. Moreover, a coupled three-level plasmonic system is employed to explain the underlying mechanism and near-field coupling between the horizontal and vertical gold bars, and the analytical results show good consistency with the numerical calculations. This work provides a simple approach for designing compact and tunable PIT devices and has potential applications in selective filtering, plasmonic switching and optical sensing.

Abstract:Enhancing light-matter interaction is crucial in optics for boosting nanophotonic device performance, which can be achieved via plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). In this study, a polarization-insensitive PIT effect at terahertz frequencies is achieved using a novel metasurface composed of a cross-shaped graphene structure surrounded by four graphene strips. The high symmetry of this metasurface ensures its insensitivity to changes in the polarization angle of incident light. The PIT effect, stemming from the coupling of graphene bright modes, was explored through finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations and coupled mode theory (CMT) analysis. By tuning the Fermi level in graphene, we effectively modulated the PIT transparent window, achieving high-performance optical switching with a modulation depth (88.9% < MD < 98.0%) and insertion losses (0.17 dB < IL < 0.51 dB) at a carrier mobility of 2 m 2 /(V·s). Furthermore, the impact of graphene carrier mobility on the slow-light effect was examined, revealing that increasing the carrier mobility from 0.5 m 2 /(V·s) to 3 m 2 /(V·s) boosts the group index from 126 to 781. These findings highlight the potential for developing versatile terahertz devices, such as optical switches and slow-light apparatus.

Abstract:A bifunctional tunable metamaterial composed of pattern metal structure, graphene, and strontium titanate (STO) film is proposed and studied numerically and theoretically. The dual plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) window is obtained by coupling the bright state cut wire (CW) and two pairs of dark state dual symmetric semiring resonators (DSSRs) with different parameters. Correspondingly, slow light effect can also be realized. When shifting independently, the Fermi level of the graphene strips, the amplitudes of the two PIT transparency windows and slow light effect can be tuned, respectively. In addition, when independently tuning the temperature of the metamaterial, the frequency of the dual PIT windows and slow light effect can be tuned. The physical mechanism of the dual-PIT was analyzed theoretically by using a three-harmonic oscillator model. The results show that the regulation function of the PIT peak results from the change of the oscillation damping at the dark state DSSRs by tuning conductivity of graphene. Our design presents a new structure to realize the bifunctional optical switch and slow light.

Abstract:It is necessary to explore new mechanisms of plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) formation to achieve high-performance optical multifunction devices. Here, we introduced a symmetry-protected quasi bound states in the continuum (quasi-BIC) in the vicinity of the graphene plasmon resonance (GPR) mode to achieve a tunable plasmon-induced absorption (PIA) with 99.0 % and 99.4 %, which is the result of coupling between the bright modes. PIA supported by quasi-BIC has outstanding characteristics in both optical switching and slow light, with amplitude modulation depth up to 100 %, insertion loss below 0.04 dB, and group delay up to 10.3 ps. Significantly, it also solves the challenge that the absorption of the graphene system is reduced during dynamic modulation of electromagnetic waves. The dynamic modulation range of perfect absorption is up to 4.95 THz, which is much higher than any work that has been reported. We believe that the proposed structure provides a great reference for the future research direction of PIT and stimulates the development of high-performance multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Recently reported metamaterial analogues of plasmon-induced transparency are very promising in designing novel optical components, such as slow-light devices and optical switches. However, most of the previous works mainly focus on manipulating the PIT effects using planar structures in the free space under normal incidence, where the resonances are mostly induced by the incident electric fields. Here, we present a PIT analogue in a waveguide system in the terahertz regime by inserting coupled split-ring resonator pairs into a tapered parallel plate waveguide. Different from the free-space cases, the incident magnetic fields can also play an important role here. By carefully arranging the relative orientations of the coupled split-ring resonators in each pair, giant modulation of the PIT effect is observed. This straightforward approach may enable novel devices for integrated terahertz devices.

Abstract:As a plasmonic analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) has drawn more attention due to its potential of realizing on-chip sensing, slow light and nonlinear effect enhancement. However, the performance of a plasmonic system is always limited by the metal ohmic loss. Here, we numerically report a PIT system with gain materials based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguide. The corresponding phenomenon can be theoretically analyzed by coupled mode theory (CMT). After filling gain material into a disk cavity, the system intrinsic loss can be compensated by external pump beam, and the PIT can be greatly fueled to achieve a dramatic enhancement of slow light performance. Finally, a double-channel enhanced slow light is introduced by adding a second gain disk cavity. This work paves way for a potential new high-performance slow light device, which can have significant applications for high-compact plasmonic circuits and optical communication.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are widely used in photonics because of their profound electro-optic properties. However, the slow switching speeds (milliseconds) and the fluid nature of liquid crystals restrict their potential use in integrated photonics. In this work, polymer-stabilized liquid crystals are utilized as the functional material to improve the response time with a polymer network that helps pre-orientate the liquid crystal. Additionally, plasmonic slot structures are simultaneously employed to minimize the switch voltage by confining the optical field within the electrode spacing at subwavelength scales. Thanks to the large overlap of the optical and electric fields, the scattering states of the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal can be effectively manipulated to modulate the loss of the propagating wave, resulting in strong optical attenuation in the integrated photonic platform. Specifically, a plasmonic enhanced polymer-stabilized liquid crystal photonic device for operation at 1550 nm, which has a length of only 10 mu m and shows an extinction ratio of 0.38 dB mu m-1, with a power consumption of less than 6 mu W and a response time approximate to 20 mu s, resulting in a figure-of-merit of 0.012 mW. A scheme of on-chip integrated optical attenuators for plasmonic slot waveguide-enhanced electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film is proposed. This prototype reduces the response time and improves the modulation efficiency of the liquid crystal-based integrated photonic device, resulting in a compact and energy-efficient platform for on-chip optical modulation. image

Abstract:We designed a single-layer patterned graphene metasurface composed of four L-shaped graphene strips, four rectangular graphene strips, and meter-shaped graphene block. Metasurface creates dual plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) through the interaction between light and dark modes. The transmission characteristics of the structure are analyzed using the coupled mode theory and the finite element method, and the structure realizes the function of the dual-frequency optical switch. Abstract:We numerically and theoretically investigate a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) system based on aperture-coupled cascade resonators without gap to achieve plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). Such structure not only can be fabricated easily, but also possesses low intrinsic loss. Consequently, a high transmitted PIT peak more than 90% can be achieved, and this device also has good performance on sensing and slow light. Finally, multi-channel PIT and slow light can be achieved via cascade multiple resonators. This work provides a valuable approach to realize on-chip PIT in practical experiments.
Dynamically tunable electromagnetically induced transparency-like metamaterial structure based on polarization sensitivity

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) metamaterial structure composed of Ag nanomaterials with polarization sensitivity. The metamaterial model consists of three bright modes with different resonant frequencies. The optical properties of the structure are further investigated using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The results show that the conversion between single-band PIT and dual-band PIT effects can be achieved by changing the polarization degree of the incident light, the number of transparent windows can be changed from one to two, and the process is accompanied by the conversion of bright and dark modes and the change of the resonance wavelength of the transmission peak. In addition, When the light is polarized in the Y-direction, the two transparency windows have different refractive index sensitivities, with FOM values of 5.94/RIU and 5.65/RIU, respectively.

Abstract:All-optical tunable on-chip plasmon-induced transparency is realized in integrated plasmonic circuits based on two surface-plasmon-polaritons absorption induced polymerization of SU-8 photoresist. Owing to the enhanced interaction between surface plasmon polaritons and SU-8 guaranteed by the slow light effect around the transparency window and the strong light confinement effect of the plasmonic nanocavity modes, a continuous shift range of 24 nm in the central wavelength of the transparency window was obtained. The threshold power of the two surface-plasmon-polaritons absorption induced polymerization of SU-8 was as low as 100 μW, which is three orders of magnitude less than previous reports.

Abstract:Abstract On-chip plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) possessing the unique properties of controlling light propagation states is a promising way to on-chip ultrafast optical connection networks as well as integrated optical processing chips. On-chip PIT has attracted enormous research interests, the latest developments of which have also yield progress in nanophotonics, material science, nonlinear optics, and so on. This review summarizes the realization methods, novel configurations, diversiform materials, and the improved performance indexes. Finally, a brief outlook on the remaining challenges and possible development direction in the pursuit of the application of a practical on-chip photonic processor based on PIT is also afforded.

Ultralow-power All-Optical Tunable Double Plasmon-Induced Transparencies in Nonlinear Metamaterials

Abstract:An all-optical tunable double plasmon-induced transparency is realized in a photonic metamaterial coated on the surface of a nanocomposite layer made of polycrystalline indium-tin oxide doped with gold nanoparticles. The local-field effect, quantum confinement effect, and hot-electron injection ensure a large optical nonlinearity for the nanocomposite. A shift of 120 nm in the central wavelength of transparency windows is reached under excitation with a weak pump laser with an intensity of 21 kW/cm2. Compared with previous reports, the threshold pump intensity is reduced by five orders of magnitude, while an ultrafast response time of 34.9 ps is maintained.

Abstract:On-chip plasmon-induced transparency offers the possibility of realization of ultrahigh-speed information processing chips. Unfortunately, little experimental progress has been made to date because it is difficult to obtain on-chip plasmon-induced transparency using only a single meta-molecule in plasmonic circuits. Here, we report a simple and efficient strategy to realize on-chip plasmon-induced transparency in a nanoscale U-shaped plasmonic waveguide side-coupled nanocavity pair. High tunability in the transparency window is achieved by covering the pair with different organic polymer layers. It is possible to realize ultrafast all-optical tunability based on pump light-induced refractive index change of a graphene cover layer. Compared with previous reports, the overall feature size of the plasmonic nanostructure is reduced by more than three orders of magnitude, while ultrahigh tunability of the transparency window is maintained. This work also provides a superior platform for the study of the various physical effects and phenomena of nonlinear optics and quantum optics.

Abstract:Dynamically tunable multichannel filter based on plasmon-induced transparencies (PITs) is proposed in a plasmonic waveguide side-coupled to slot and rectangle resonators system at optical communication range. The slot and rectangle resonators in this system can be regarded as radiative or dark resonators as same as the radiative or dark elements in the metamaterial structure with the help of the evanescent coupling. The multiple PIT responses which can enable the realization of nanoscale filter with four channels are originated from the direct near-field coupling and indirect phase couple through a plasmonic waveguide simultaneously. Moreover, the magnitudes and bandwidths of the filter can be efficiently tuned by controlling of the geometric parameters such as the coupling distances and the pump light-induced refractive index change of the Kerr material which is embedded into the metal-dielectric-metal waveguide between the radiative resonators.
