Abstract:We study the collapsibility of finite simplicial complexes of dimension 3 endowed with a CAT(0) metric. Our main result states that, under an additional hypothesis, finite simplicial 3-complexes endowed with a CAT(0) metric collapse to a point through CAT(0) subspaces.

Abstract:We prove that an open manifold $M$ of dimension at least $5$ which admits a complete CAT(0) polyhedral metric is pseudo-collarable, its fundamental group at infinity is strongly perfectly semistable and has vanishing Chapman-Siebenmann obstruction $\tau_{\infty}(M)$. Moreover, this implies that $M$ is topologically collapsible, when $n\geq 6$. Conversely, any finite dimensional collapsible polyhedron is PL homeomorphic to a CAT(0) cubical complex.

Abstract:We study the theory of convergence for CAT$(0)$-lattices (that is groups $\Gamma$ acting geometrically on proper, geodesically complete CAT$(0)$-spaces) and their quotients (CAT$(0)$-orbispaces). We describe some splitting and collapsing phenomena, explaining precisely how these action can degenerate to a possibly non-discrete limit action. Finally, we prove a compactness theorem for the class of compact CAT$(0)$-homology orbifolds, and some applications: an isolation result for flat orbispaces and an entropy-pinching theorem.

Boundary rigidity of 3D CAT(0) cube complexes

Abstract:The boundary rigidity problem is a classical question from Riemannian geometry: if $(M, g)$ is a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, is the geometry of $M$ determined up to isometry by the metric $d_g$ induced on the boundary $\partial M$? In this paper, we consider a discrete version of this problem: can we determine the combinatorial type of a finite cube complex from its boundary distances? As in the continuous case, reconstruction is not possible in general, but one expects a positive answer under suitable contractibility and non-positive curvature conditions. Indeed, in two dimensions Haslegrave gave a positive answer to this question when the complex is a finite quadrangulation of the disc with no internal vertices of degree less than $4$. We prove a $3$-dimensional generalisation of this result: the combinatorial type of a finite CAT(0) cube complex with an embedding in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be reconstructed from its boundary distances. Additionally, we prove a direct strengthening of Haslegrave's result: the combinatorial type of any finite 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex can be reconstructed from its boundary distances.

Polyhedral CAT(0) metrics on locally finite complexes

Abstract:We prove the arborescence of any locally finite complex that is $CAT(0)$ with a polyhedral metric for which all vertex stars are convex. In particular locally finite $CAT(0)$ cube complexes or equilateral simplicial complexes are arborescent. Moreover, a triangulated manifold admits a $CAT(0)$ polyhedral metric if and only if it admits arborescent triangulations. We prove eventually that every locally finite complex which is $CAT(0)$ with a polyhedral metric has a barycentric subdivision which is arborescent.

Abstract:In this paper we determine the threshold for collapsibility in the probabilistic model $X_d(n,p)$ of $d$-dimensional simplicial complexes. A lower bound for this threshold $p=\frac{c_d}{n}$ was established in \cite{ALLM}. Here we show that this is indeed the correct threshold. Namely, for every $c>c_d$, a complex drawn from $X_d(n,\frac{c}{n})$ is asymptotically almost surely not collapsible.

Abstract:In [3], after defining notions of LS category in the simplicial context, the authors show that the geometric simplicial LS category is non-decreasing under strong collapses. However, they do not give examples where it increases strictly, but they conjecture that such an example should exist, and thus that the geometric simplicial LS category is not strong homotopy invariant. The purpose of this note is to provide with such an example. We construct a simplicial complex whose simplicial and geometric simplicial LS categories are different, and using this, we provide an example of a strong collapse that increases the geometric simplicial LS category, thus settling the geometric simplicial LS category not being strong homotopy invariant.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a bicollapsible 2-complex. This allows us to generalize the hyperbolicity of one-relator groups with torsion to a broader class of groups with presentations whose relators are proper powers. We also prove that many such groups act properly and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex.

Abstract:The \emph{strong collapse} of a simplicial complex, proposed by Barmak and Minian (\emph{Disc. Comp. Geom. 2012}), is a combinatorial collapse of a complex onto its sub-complex. Recently, it has received attention from computational topology researchers, owing to its empirically observed usefulness in simplification and size-reduction of the size of simplicial complexes while preserving the homotopy class. We consider the strong collapse process on random simplicial complexes. For the Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random clique complex $X(n,c/n)$ on $n$ vertices with edge probability $c/n$ with $c>1$, we show that after any maximal sequence of strong collapses the remaining subcomplex, or \emph{core} must have $(1-\gamma)(1-c\gamma) n+o(n)$ vertices asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.), where $\gamma$ is the least non-negative fixed point of the function $f(x) = \exp\left(-c(1-x)\right)$ in the range $(0,1)$. These are the first theoretical results proved for strong collapses on random (or non-random) simplicial complexes.

Abstract: We investigate the collapsing geometry of hyperk\"ahler 4-manifolds. As applications we prove two well-known conjectures in the field. (1) Any collapsed limit of unit-diameter hyperk\"ahler metrics on the K3 manifold is isometric to one of the following: the quotient of a flat 3-torus by an involution, a singular special K\"ahler metric on the 2-sphere, or the unit interval. (2) Any complete hyperk\"ahler 4-manifold with finite energy (i.e., gravitational instanton) is asymptotic to a model end at infinity.

Abstract:We exhibit families of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on K3 surfaces which collapse to an interval, with Tian-Yau and Taub-NUT metrics occurring as bubbles. There is a corresponding continuous surjective map from the K3 surface to the interval, with regular fibers diffeomorphic to either 3-tori or Heisenberg nilmanifolds.
Automorphism groups of cocompact CAT(0) cube complexes and simplicity

Abstract:We provide a systematic description of the automorphism groups of specially cocompact CAT(0) cube complexes. We show that these groups are topologically finitely generated, present a method to explicitly obtain generating sets, and prove a dichotomy on their size. Furthermore, we show that, under some extra assumptions, the normal subgroup known as Aut^+ is simple, non-discrete, and tdlc. In particular, we obtain a new class of simple, non-discrete, tdlc groups that are accessible to further study. Finally, we study the relative size of Aut^+ in the automorphism group, providing a sufficient condition for its closure to be finite index and presenting a common example where it is not even cocompact.

Abstract:We prove that if a sequence of geodesically complete CAT(0)-spaces with uniformly cocompact discrete groups of isometries converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to , then the dimension of the maximal Euclidean factor splitted off by and is the same, for j big enough. In other words, no additional Euclidean factors can appear in the limit.

Abstract:In this note, we prove that finite CAT(0) cube complexes can be reconstructed from their boundary distances (computed in their 1-skeleta). This result was conjectured by Haslegrave, Scott, Tamitegama, and Tan (2023). The reconstruction of a finite cell complex from the boundary distances is the discrete version of the boundary rigidity problem, which is a classical problem from Riemannian geometry. In the proofs, we use the bijection between CAT(0) cube complexes and median graphs and the corner peelings of median graphs.

Abstract:This paper deals with the existence, or absence, of coalescent contractions of contractible spaces. These are the contractions such that when the tracks of any two points meet, at time t0, they remain together thereafter. If a finite simplicial complex K is collapsible, then any collapse of K encodes coalescent contractions of K. Examples of contractible spaces where no coalescent contractions exist are the Dunce Hat and Bing's house. We establish a criteria for contractible finite simplicial complexes that ensures there are no coalescent contractions: the star-disc property. Bounds for the collapsibility number of a simplicial complex and non-cover complexes of hypergraphs

Abstract:The collapsibility number of simplicial complexes was introduced by Wegner in order to understand the intersection patterns of convex sets. This number also plays an important role in a variety of Helly type results. We show that the non-cover complex of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is $|V(\mathcal{H)}|- \gamma_i(\mathcal{H})-1$-collapsible, where $\gamma_i(\mathcal{H})$ is the generalization of independence domination number of a graph to hypergraph. This extends the result of Choi, Kim and Park from graphs to hypergraphs. Moreover, the upper bound in terms of strong independence domination number given by Kim and Kim for the Leray number of the non-cover complex of a hypergraph can be obtained as a special case of our result.

Abstract:Given a finite CAT ( 0 ) cubical complex, we define a flag simplicial complex associated to it, called the crossing complex. We show that the crossing complex holds much of the combinatorial information of the original cubical complex: for example, hyperplanes in the cubical complex correspond to vertex links in the crossing complex, and the crossing complex is balanced if and only if the cubical complex is cubically balanced. The most significant result is that the sets of f-vectors of CAT ( 0 ) cubical complexes and flag simplicial complexes are equal, up to an invertible linear transformation.

Topological regularity and stability of noncollapsed spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

Abstract:We investigate the topological regularity and stability of noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces $(M_i^n,g_i,p_i)\to (X^n,d)$. We confirm a conjecture proposed by Colding and Naber in dimension $n=4$, showing that the cross-sections of tangent cones at a given point $x\in X^4$ are all homeomorphic to a fixed spherical space form $S^3/\Gamma_x$, and $\Gamma_x$ is trivial away from a $0$-dimensional set. In dimensions $n>4$, we show an analogous statement at points where all tangent cones are $(n-4)$-symmetric. Furthermore, we prove that $(n-3)$-symmetric noncollapsed Ricci limits are topological manifolds, thus confirming a particular case of a conjecture due to Cheeger, Colding, and Tian. Our analysis relies on two key results, whose importance goes beyond their applications in the study of cross-sections of noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces: (i) A new manifold recognition theorem for noncollapsed ${\rm RCD}(-2,3)$ spaces. (ii) A cone rigidity result ruling out noncollapsed Ricci limit spaces of the form $\mathbb{R}^{n-3}\times C(\mathbb{RP}^2)$.
