Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional (1D) coupled-resonator array (CRA), where a two-level quantum emitter (2LE) is electric-dipole coupled to the modes of two adjacent resonators. We investigate the energy spectrum, the photon probability distribution of the bound states and the emission process of the 2LE into the CRA vacuum. A quantum phase transition is found which is characterized by the change of the number of the out-of-band discrete levels. The condition for this change is also presented. The photon wave functions of bound states are found to be asymmetry around the position of the 2LE when the coupling strengths between the 2LE and the resonator are not equal, and they have the same preferred directions which are primary determined by the larger one among the coupling strengths. The presence of the atom-photon bound states is manifested in the form of a stationary oscillation or a non-vanishing constant in the long enough time.

Abstract:We investigate the entanglement dynamics and purity of a two-level atom, which is additionally driven by a classical field, interacting with a coherent field in a dissipative environment. It is shown that the amount of entanglement and the purity of the system can be improved by controlling the classical field.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for transferring entanglement through two independent arrays of coupled resonator waveguides, where a three-level atom is embedded in each resonator. We investigate the entanglement dynamics of the transferred state. The influence of initial states and applied lasers on the entanglement sudden death phenomenon is also discussed. Furthermore, we study the dynamics of pairwise quantum correlations measured by the quantum discord.

Abstract:We show that two-photon transport can be modulated by a two-level emitter coupled to a cavity in a one-dimensional waveguide. In the ordinary case, the transmitted light has a wider frequency spectrum than the situation without the cavity because it is reflected and scattered many times. But when the two photons are resonant with the cavity resonance reflection frequency, the frequency spectrum of the transmitted light becomes narrower than that without the cavity. This means that properly tuning the cavity resonance frequency can improve the photon-photon interaction. In addition, we show that the two-photon intensity correlation functions are nearly opposite to each other at the two sides of the emitter transition frequency rather than be the same, which is exactly the Fano resonance line shape for two photons. Such an effect is important for lowering the power threshold in optical bistable devices and for sensing applications. When the emitter transition frequency equals to the cavity resonance frequency for a high-Q cavity, our results agree with the recent experiments and theories.

Abstract:We show theoretically that by applying a bichromatic electromagnetic field, the dressed states of a monochromatically driven two-level atom can be pumped into a coherent superposition termed dressed-state coherent population trapping. This effect can be viewed as a new key to manipulating a two-level system via its control over dressed-state populations. Applying this effect in the precision measurement of Rabi frequency, the unexpected population inversion and lasing without inversion is discussed to demonstrate such controllability.
Controlling Directed Atomic Motion and Second-Order Tunneling of a Spin-Orbit-coupled Atom in Optical Lattices

Abstract:We theoretically explore the tunneling dynamics for the tight-binding model of a single spin-orbit-coupled atom trapped in an optical lattice subjected to lattice shaking and to time-periodic Zeeman field. By means of analytical and numerical methods, we demonstrate that the spin-orbit (SO) coupling adds some results to the tunneling dynamics in both multiphoton resonance and far-off-resonance parameter regimes. When the driving frequency is resonant with the static Zeeman field (multiphoton resonances), we obtain an unexpected dynamical localization (DL) phenomenon where the single SO-coupled atom is restricted to making perfect two-site Rabi oscillation accompanied by spin flipping. By using the unconventional DL phenomenon, we are able to generate a ratchetlike effect which enables directed atomic motion towards different directions and accompanies periodic spin flipping under the action of SO coupling. For the far-off-resonance case, we show that by suppressing the usual intersite tunneling alone, it is possible to realize a type of spin-conserving second-order tunneling between next-nearest-neighboring sites, which is not accessible in the conventional lattice system without SO coupling. We also show that simultaneous controls of the usual intersite tunneling and the SO-coupling-related second-order tunneling are necessary for quasienergies flatness (collapse) and completely frozen dynamics to exist. These results may be relevant to potential applications such as spin-based quantum information processing and design of spintronics devices.
Coherent Control of Spontaneous Emission for a giant driven $Λ$-type three-level atom

Abstract:Quantum optics with giant atoms provides a new approach for implementing optical memory devices at the atomic scale. Here, we theoretically study the relaxation dynamics of a single driven three-level atom interacting with a one-dimensional waveguide, via two coupling points. Under certain conditions, after the long-time dynamics, we found that the population of giant atom can either maintain stable values or exhibit regular periodic oscillation behavior, while photons can be trapped in the region of giant atoms. This phenomenon is not achievable using a two-level atom with two legs. It is worth noting that the atomic excitation probability of a stable bound state is a constant value, which is determined by the size of the atom. Crucially, the size of the atom (the distance between the two coupling points) is much larger than the wavelength of the light field, which is a necessary condition for the existence of oscillating bound states.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum dynamics of a quantum oscillator coupled with the most upper state of a three-level $\Lambda-$ type system. The two transitions of the three-level emitter, possessing orthogonal dipole moments, are coherently pumped with a single or two electromagnetic field sources, respectively. We have found ranges for flexible lasing or cooling phenomena referring to the quantum oscillator's degrees of freedom. This is due to asymmetrical decay rates and quantum interference effects leading to population transfer among the relevant dressed states of the emitter's subsystem with which the quantum oscillator is coupled. As an appropriate system can be considered a nanomechanical resonator coupled with the most excited state of the three-level emitter fixed on it. Alternatively, if the upper state of the $\Lambda-$type system possesses a permanent dipole then it can couple with a cavity electromagnetic field mode which can be in the terahertz domain, for instance. In the latter case, we demonstrate an effective electromagnetic field source of terahertz photons.

Abstract:We show that it is possible to generate Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entangled radiation using an atomic reservoir controlled by coherent population trapping. A beam of three-level atoms is initially prepared in near-coherent population trapping (CPT) state and acts as a long-lived coherence-controlled reservoir. Four-wave mixing leads to amplification of cavity modes resonant with Rabi sidebands of the atomic dipole transitions. The cavity modes evolve into an EPR state, whose degree of entanglement is controlled by the intensities and the frequencies of the driving fields. This scheme uses the long-lived CPT coherence and is robust against spontaneous emission of the atomic beam. At the same time, this scheme is implemented in a one-step procedure, not in a two-step procedure as was required in Phys. Rev. Lett. 98 (2007) 240401.
Control of Resonance Fluorescence in Coupled Quantum Dots

Abstract:Spectral and squeezing properties of the resonance fluorescence of two coupled quantum dots forming an effective Lambda-type three-level structure and connected with two normal metal leads are studied. We assume that one of the dots is driven by a strong light field and find that by modulating the bias voltage and the dot-lead coupling strengths, the electron can be selectively trapped in one of the two dressed states produced by the light field. The trapped electron possesses large coherence, and the resulting unbalanced dressed-state populations can lead to a significant enhancement or suppression of the sidebands in the resonance fluorescence spectrum. Moreover, a wideband squeezing can be generated that may be significantly enhanced by modulating the gate voltage. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America
Switchable dynamics in the deep-strong-coupling regime

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the dynamics of the system that consists of a cascade three-level emitter interacting with a single-mode resonator in the deep-strong-coupling regime. We show that the dynamical evolution of the system can only occur in a certain parity chain decided by the initial state, in which the photon population and the initial state probability present periodic collapses and revivals. In particular, we find that the evolution of the dynamics can be controlled by feeding the time-control pulses into the system. Control pluses with specific arrival times can suddenly switch off and on the time evolutions of the system populations and initial state probability when the system is originally in a symmetry superposition state. Physically, the switch-off of the evolution originates from the symmetry-breaking of the state, i.e, $(|g0\rangle+|f0\rangle)/\sqrt{2}\rightarrow(|g0\rangle-|f0\rangle)/\sqrt{2}$. This work offers an all-optical approach to manipulate the dynamics of the system, which might have potential application in modern quantum technology.

Tunable Chiral Bound States in a Dimer Chain of Coupled Resonators

Abstract:We study an excitation hopping on a one-dimensional (1D) dimer chain of coupled resonators with the alternate on-site photon energies, which interacts with a two-level emitter (TLE) by a coupling point or two adjacent coupling points. In the single-excitation subspace, this system not only possesses two energy bands with propagating states, but also possesses photonic bound states. The number of bound states depends on the coupling forms between the TLE and the dimer chain. It is found that when the TLE is locally coupled to one resonator of the dimer chain, the bound-state that has mirror reflection symmetry. When the TLE is nonlocally coupled to two adjacent resonators, three bound states with preferred direction arise due to the mirror symmetry breaking. By using chirality to measure the asymmetry, it is found that the chirality of these bound states can be tuned by changing the energy differences of single photon in the adjacent resonators, the coupling strengths and the transition energy of the TLE.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate single-photon scattering and nonreciprocal transmission in a coupled resonator waveguide which is coupled to a driven three-level giant atom via two distant sites. In our system, the local coupling phases are introduced to induce intriguing interference effects. As a result, the phase difference can serve as a sensitive controller for the photon scattering. It is found that the photon scattering properties can be effectively tailored by the size of the giant atom, the driving field and the phase difference. Intriguingly, by carefully tuning the parameters such as the atomic dissipation and the phase difference, a perfect nonreciprocal single-photon transmission can be realized. Additionally, the photon frequency can be adjusted by modulating Rabi frequency of the driving field. These results have significant potential for the development of nonreciprocal optical devices using the giant-atom configuration.

Abstract:We investigate the time evolution of entanglement between two two-level atoms which are coupled to a common multimode electromagnetic reservoir and simultaneously driven by a coherent field. We find that the entanglement can always be created and maintained with a moderate intensity of the driving field during the track of approaching steady entangled states when both atoms are initially in their ground states and the reservoir is in the vacuum state or the squeezed vacuum state. We also show that the steady-state entanglement between the atoms can be enhanced by use of the coherent field when the reservoir is in the weakly squeezed vacuum state. More interestingly, in the squeezed reservoir case, the sudden death period in the time evolution of the entanglement can be removed by use of the coherent driving field.

Abstract:The spontaneous emission spectrum of a three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type atom driven by a microwave field was studied. For the two transitions coupled to the same modified reservoir, we discussed the influence of photonic band gap and Rabi frequency of the microwave field on the emission spectrum. The emission spectrum is given for different locations of the upper band-edge frequency. With the transition frequencies moving from outside the band gap to inside, the number of peaks decreases in the emission spectrum and the multipeak structure of spectral line is finally replaced by a strong non-Lorentzian shape. With increase of the Rabi frequency of the microwave field, we find the spectral line changes from a multipeak structure to a two-peak structure, originating from the inhibition of spontaneous emission for the corresponding decay channel.

Abstract:It is of fundamental interest in controlling the light–matter interaction for a long time in the field of quantum information processing. Here, we explore a model by coupling a giant atom with the dynamically-modulated coupled-resonator waveguide and find the bound state, where the light shows the localization effect and the atomic decay into resonator modes is inhibited, excited by a propagating photon. An analytical treatment based on the separation of the propagating states and localized states of light has been proposed and provides inspiring explanation of our finding, i.e., there supports a quantum channel where the propagating photon can be converted to the localized state through the quantum interference from light–atom interactions in three resonators at different frequency detunings. Our work therefore shows the potential for actively localizing the photon in a modulated coupled-resonator waveguide system interacting with the giant atom, and also points out a way to study the light–atom interaction in a synthetic frequency dimension that holds the similar Hamiltonian.

Abstract:A promising route towards the deterministic creation and annihilation of single-phonons is to couple a single-photon emitter to a mechanical resonator. The challenge lies in reaching the resolved-sideband regime with a large coupling rate and a high mechanical quality factor. We achieve this by coupling self-assembled InAs quantum dots to a small mode-volume phononic-crystal resonator with mechanical frequency Ω m /2 π = 1.466 GHz and quality factor Q m = 2.1 × 10 3 . Thanks to the high coupling rate of g ep /2 π = 2.9 MHz, and by exploiting a matching condition between the effective Rabi and mechanical frequencies, we observe the interaction between the two systems via correlations in the emitted photons. Our results represent a major step towards quantum control of the mechanical resonator via a single-photon emitter.

Abstract:We propose an approach to simultaneously excite two atoms by using a cavity-assisted Raman process in combination with a cavity-photon-mediated interaction. The system consists of a two-level atom and a Lambda-type or V-type three-level atom, which are coupled together with a cavity mode. Having derived the effective Hamiltonian, we find that under certain circumstances a single photon can simultaneously excite two atoms. In addition, multiple photons and even a classical field can also simultaneously excite two atoms. As an example, we show a scheme to realize our proposal in a circuit QED setup, which is artificial atoms coupled with a cavity. The dynamics and the quantum-statistical properties of the process are investigated with experimentally feasible parameters.
