Abstract:Aim: Parental behaviors and the home environment are two of the most effective ways to adopt healthy eating and active lifestyles. For this reason, it is crucial to understand children's nutritional habits, analyze the dynamics related to parental factors, diagnose and treat childhood obesity in the early period, and prevent adulthood obesity. This study aimed to explore how parenting influences children's nutritional status, physical activity, and BMI. Methods: The study involved 596 children with their parents. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the survey method. The survey consists of descriptive information (age, gender, educational status), anthropometric measurements, nutritional habits, Family Nutrition and Physical Activity Scale (FNPA), International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and 24-hour dietary recall. The Mean Adequacy Ratio (MAR) was applied to assess dietary adequacy. Results: Most mothers and fathers were overweight or obese(61.6 % and 68.7%, respectively). 38.6% of boys and 23.1% of girls were overweight or obese. The FNPA score was positively correlated with MAR(p<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that children's BMI was negatively correlated with FNPA score, while maternal BMI and father's BMI were positively correlated(p<0.05). Furthermore, dietary energy was not associated with the child's BMI but with dietary adequacy(p<0.05). There was no evidence that family impacted children's physical activity. Conclusion: This study supports the parenting that influences children's dietary intake and BMI. Adequate and balanced nutrition, regardless of dietary energy, may affect children's body weight. Family plays a significant role in influencing and forming children's lifestyle-related behaviors. Children's healthy eating and physical exercise habits can be encouraged through school-based programs involving families.

The effect of nutritional attitudes of mothers as health care professionals on their children’s eating behaviors

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective This study aimed to determine the effects of the attitudes of mothers as health care professionals and their sociodemographic characteristics on their children’s eating habits. Methods The data of this descriptive and cross-sectional study were collected between January and March 2022, using a web-based survey of 386 mothers. Results The mean age of the mothers was 32.88±4.96 years, and the mean age of the children was 38.78±18.24 months. Regarding educational status, 62.7% of the mothers were university graduates, while 54.4% were nurses. A significant and positive correlation was found between the sub-dimensions of the Mother’s Attitudes towards the Feeding Process Scale and the Behavioral Pediatric Feeding Assessment scale (p=0.000). According to the multiple regression analysis, the main determinant of the picky eaters sub-dimension of the Behavioral Pediatric Feeding Assessment scale was the mother’s occupation (β=0.28; 95% Cl: 3.07, 6.50), the main determinant of the toddler refusal-general sub-dimension was negative affect during the meal (β=0.38; 95% Cl: 0.19, 0.32), the main determinant of the older children refusal - general sub-dimension was negative affect during the meal (β=0.30; 95% Cl: 0.16, 0.33), and the main determinant of the toddler refusal – textured foods sub-dimension was forced feeding (β=0.48; 95% Cl: 0.41, 0.63). Conclusion The study found that problems related to mothers’ attitudes toward the nutrition process were moderate and that these problems were mainly caused by mothers’ attitudes toward inadequate/unbalanced nutrition. It was also found that the children had moderate problematic eating behavior and eating habits.

Mother-child pairs' eating and feeding behaviours in two different nutritional status from two distinct provinces

Abstract:Nutrition plays a crucial role for the bio-psycho-social growth and development of children. Mother-child pairs' eating-feeding problems can be hypothesized to relate to the child's nutritional status and living area. Our focus was to assess maternal attitudes and children's eating habits in thin and normal-weight children across two cities characterized by distinct socioeconomic and demographic profiles: Ankara and Şanlıurfa. This double case-control study included the mothers whose children are aged between 2 and 7 years old in both cities. Figure Rating Scale, Child Feeding Questionnaire and Behavioral Pediatrics Feeding Assessment Scale were filled by mothers of children. The mothers of thin children were concerned more about the weight of their children, felt more responsible for feeding their children, and use of pressured them to eat more frequently compared to normal-weight children's mothers in both cities. In Ankara, the duration of breastfeeding is longer, using formula is rarer and starting complementary food on time is more common, mother had higher scores on perceived responsibility, perceived child weight, and concern about child weight subscales; lower score on the restriction subscale compared to Şanlıurfa. Mothers of both thin and normal weight children in Şanlıurfa rated their children as weaker compared to those in Ankara. In conclusion, child eating behaviors and parental feeding practices were associated with the weight of children depending on demographic and sociocultural differences. Implementing customized, location-specific preventive educational initiatives on child feeding will not only foster behavioral changes but also yield valuable insights for shaping future interventions.

Abstract:Aim This study was conducted to determine the effect of middle and high school students' emotional eating behavior on obesity. Method A descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study design was used. The sample consisted of 267 students studying in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Data were collected using a Child Information Form and the Emotional Eating Scale. The researchers measured the students' height and weight and calculated their body mass indices (BMI), and BMI percentiles were evaluated according to age and gender. Percentage calculations, mean scores, Spearman correlation analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Results Of the students participating in the study, 54.7% were girl and 45.3% were boy. It was determined that 28.4% of the students were overweight and obese. As a result of multiple regression analysis, it was determined that students' emotional eating behavior explained 25% of obesity ( p < 0.001). It was found that anxiety-anger- frustration, one of the subscales of the emotional eating scale, was the only variable that significantly predicted students' obesity status (β = 0.387). Emotional eating significantly predicted the obesity status of boy and girl students ( p < 0.001). Conclusion In this study, it was concluded that students' emotional eating behavior affected obesity. Implications for practice In line with these results, it is recommended that studies on other variables that may predict the effect of students' emotional eating behavior on obesity should be conducted and that nurses should contact schools to conduct emotional eating behavior screenings and provide emotional eating education for students who exhibit emotional eating behavior.

Abstract:Food experiences as well as childhood obesity risk, begin prenatally. Pregnancy is a critical period for the future feeding practices and choices. Flavor stimulations start during pregnancy, since chemosensory systems are functional before birth. During the intrauterine phase, the exposure to maternal environmental stimuli, including dietary habits, through the cord, may have effects on taste development and food choices since the fetus is able to swallow amniotic fluid, which is flavored by the mother's diet. After birth, breastfed infants are exposed to flavors derived from maternal diet, leading them to a higher acceptance of solids from the start of complementary feeding. On the contrary, formula-fed infants may have difficulties to accept a varied diet later. Accordingly, complementary feeding plays a pivotal role to set taste preferences and then infant' attitudes towards new foods. Indeed, repeated exposures to foods may increase their familiarity, and represent a primary determinant of their acceptance. Mothers therefore carry a key step in this process, since consuming a variety of foods during pregnancy and breastfeeding may promote healthy eating habits in their children, preparing them to adhere to biodiversity, 1 promoting in turn a microbiota with positive effects on health. Family can be considered a system, promoting healthy eating habits and behaviors. A favorable family environment comprises the availability and early experience of healthy food taste, where parents exert cover control purchasing mostly healthy food and encouraging children to try different/new foods, providing repeated exposure of dislike foods to stimulate their taste and acceptability. Different strategies may improve child's eating behavior through the years such as daily shared breakfast/family meals, and taking advantage from mealtimes to improve communication among family members. On the contrary, within an obesogenic environment, an authoritative behavior and a strict control by parents are needed to reduce children's intake of calories-rich food, such as limit/avoid stores and restaurants that sell unhealthy food and serving small but adequate portions to develop self-regulation.

Abstract:In the context of concerns about childhood obesity, mothers are placed at the forefront of responsibility for shaping the eating behaviour and consequently the health of their young children. This is evident in a multitude of diverse sites such as government reports, health promotion materials, reality TV shows and the advice of childcare nurses and preschools. These sites produce a range of resources available to mothers to draw on to constitute themselves as mothers in terms of caring for their children's health. Drawing on a qualitative study of mothers recruited through three Australian preschool centres, this article examines how the working-class and middle-class mothers of preschool-aged children engage with knowledge about motherhood, children and health and how those engagements impact on their mothering, their foodwork and their children. We argue that, unlike the working-class mothers pathologised in some literature on obesity, these working-class mothers demonstrated a no-nonsense (but still responsibilised) approach to feeding their children. The middle-class mothers, on the other hand, were more likely to engage in practices of self-surveillance and to demonstrate considerable anxieties about the appropriateness of their practices for their children's current and future health.

Abstract:Background: The maternal perception of their children's weight and body image can affect beliefs in families regarding eating habits, exercise patterns and weight expectations. Recognition of children who are overweight or at risk for becoming overweight is important so that prevention and treatment strategies may be implemented early in life.Objectives: To evaluate the association between maternal perceptions of their own and their child's body image as well as compare the feeding practices, physical activity and maternal perception of body image between the mother's of obese children and the mother's of non-obese children.Methods: We studied the maternal perception of body image of 15 mothers of overweight children (MOC) and 15 mothers of non -overweight children (MNOC) (18 to 36 months) who attended the well baby clinic in an urban neighbor of Santiago, Chile. The assessment of maternal perception included a questionnaire (closed questions) which included figures of mothers and children whose body image ranged from very lean to obese. Anthropometrics (weight, height) measurements of children were gathered at the time of the interview and mothers self reported their weight and height.Results: Mothers in both groups, were able to accurately choose a figure that closely resembles the body image of their child. Eleven out of 15 MOC were not happy with the body image of their child whereas only 1 of 15 MNOC was not happy with the body image of her child. The MNOC preferred that their child stay the same body image or become a little heavier. The MOC preferred that their children become much skinner. Eight out of 15 MOC evaluated a lean figure of child as normal vs 3 out of 15 MNOC (χ2, p=0,062). The mothers of various nutritional status (normal, overweight or obese) were able to accurately describe themselves and pick a figure that represents their body image in both groups. There was a difference in the consumption of healthy foods (fruits and vegetables). All of the mothers of healthy children reported that their child's favorite food to eat is either fruits, vegetables or both whereas only 2 mothers of overweight children stated that their child likes fruits or vegetables. French fries and soup were two popular food choices among the overweight children whereas none of the healthy kids reported French fries as their favorite food. The mothers of both groups were able to accurately describe themselves and pick a figure that represents their body image.Conclusions: The mothers in this study have an accurate perception of their child's and their own nutritional status and could choose a picture that accurately represents their body image. Mothers of obese children were not happy with the body or the body image of their child and would prefer that their child loose weight. Mothers of obese children have a perception of normal body image that differs from that of mothers of non-overweight children; mothers of obese children referred to an image of a skinny child as a figure that represents the normal body image of a child. It is important to understand the body image perception of mothers and use their assistance when implementing childhood obesity prevention programs.

Abstract:Parents both respond to and influence their child's weight. This study aimed to investigate the association of parental feeding practices, parental control over children's eating behavior, and sociodemographic characteristics with childhood overweight and obesity. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 405 parents of children aged 7–11 years. Predictors that decreased the risk of childhood overweight/obesity were increase in child age (27.9%), high maternal education (61.7%), upper socioeconomic status (38.9%), increase in parental covert control (30.4%), and increase in parental pressure to eat (46.2%). Examining both parental attitudes and practices regarding child feeding and parental approaches to child food choices can benefit early intervention programs to prevent overweight and obesity in children.

Abstract:Abstract <sec> Objectives Parental (maternal and paternal) weight before and after pregnancy has been associated with an increased risk of obesity in the offspring. However, less is known on the longitudinal association between parental and child growth trajectories across early childhood. This work aims to describe parental and child body mass index (BMI) trajectory patterns from birth until adolescence and assess their association. </sec> <sec> Methods We analyzed 1537 single-child families participating in the Applied Research Group for Kids (TARGet Kids! ) cohort (ON, Canada). Children and their parents had repeated measurements of weight and length or height from child's birth to 13 years during scheduled visits with their primary care physician. These measurements were used to calculate BMI for parents and age and sex adjusted BMI z-scores (zBMI) for children based on the World Health Organization. Latent class mixed modeling was used to identify children and parental growth patterns. A loglinear analysis was conducted to study the tri-party interaction between child, maternal, paternal longitudinal patterns. Jaccard distance was used to assess cluster similarity. </sec> <sec> Results We identified two distinct patterns in children (normal, increasing obesity), mothers (normal, increasing obesity), and fathers (overweight, obesity). The three-way loglinear analysis indicated that the tri-party interaction between children, maternal and paternal growth patterns interaction was significant (χ2 (1) = 15.1, p < .001). 92.1% of children in the normal pattern had mothers in the normal pattern and fathers in the overweight pattern. Cluster similarity was 63% for mothers and children, but 12.5% between fathers and children, with most children from the increasing obesity group with a father in the overweight group. </sec> <sec> Conclusions There is a significant tri-party association between children, maternal and paternal BMI patterns from birth to adolescence. Abstract:Background: We aimed to evaluate the role of nutrition and behavior education intervention in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity by comparing changes in obesity-related characteristics among obese children during a follow-up period of 12 months. Methods: This study was designed as a prospective cohort study in children aged between 6 and 18 years, with exogenous obesity who applied to Istanbul Research and Training Hospital, Pediatrics Department, between January 2018 and July 2019. Beginning at the sixth month, a program for nutrition and behavior education for obesity prevention and treatment was initiated and continued during the second half of the study period. Results: The mean age of 59 children (29 females, 30 males) was 11.73 ± 2.78. BMI levels did not show a significant difference in the first 6 months, but decreased significantly during the second 6 months of the study. Screen time, fast eating behavior, overeating behavior and food score index scores also demonstrated significant improvements during the intervention period of the study, between 6 and 12 months. Conclusion: It was concluded that nutrition and behavior education for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity could be a successful intervention with close follow-up.

The influence of maternal acculturation on child body mass index at age 24 months

Abstract:Objective: Obesity rates in preschool-aged children are greatest among Latinos. Studies of the relationship of acculturation to obesity among Latino immigrants have primarily focused on adults and adolescents. We examined the influence of maternal acculturation on child body mass index (BMI) at age 24 and 36 months among predominantly Latino, low-income mother-child pairs enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Design and methods: Maternal characteristics were obtained from interviewer-administered surveys conducted in English or Spanish at 6 to 20 weeks postpartum among 679 participants in a randomized controlled trial of a health promotion intervention in two urban areas in the Northeast. Acculturation measures included: nativity (born in the United States vs foreign born), parents' nativity, years of US residence (<8 years vs > or =8 years), and exclusive use of native language vs nonexclusive use (mixed or English only). Following repeated mailings and telephone calls requesting permission to obtain their child's height and weight from Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children records, informed consent was obtained from 108 mothers. Multivariable linear regression models of maternal acculturation and child BMI z score at age 24 months and age 36 months were estimated among all mother-child pairs and within immigrant-only mother-child pairs, adjusting for relevant maternal characteristics. Results: At age 24 months, children of mothers with exclusive use of native language had higher BMI z scores compared to children of mothers with nonexclusive use among 91 mother-child pairs (beta=.74, P=0.02) and within 63 immigrant-only mother-child pairs (beta=.92, P=0.009). Conclusions: Exclusive use of native language was associated with greater BMI in children as young as age 24 months. Future research should examine the mechanisms by which mothers' language acculturation may affect proximal determinants of energy balance in preschool children, including breastfeeding practices, dietary intake, and physical activity.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess maternal misperception rates (perception as normal or underweight of a child with overweight or obesity) and their role in affecting the chance of implementing actions to change children's weight.METHODS: Obesogeneicity of Gadgets Marketed with Snacks (OBEY-AD) is an international study investigating factors promoting childhood overweight and obesity in 10 countries, in which 2,720 child-mother dyads have been enrolled. Mothers' perception of their children's weight was assessed using a projective test. Children's weight status was measured according to the anthropometric standards established by the World Health Organization.RESULTS: Mothers classified 89% of children with overweight and 52% of children with obesity as normal weight. The odds ratio of mothers' misperception was significantly higher for higher parental BMI, higher children's International Brand Awareness Inventory score, and high family socioeconomic status. Children with overweight and/or obesity who were perceived as normal weight by their mothers were less likely to be referred to specific health care services.CONCLUSIONS: Most children with overweight and/or obesity were perceived as normal weight by their mothers. Such lack of concern regarding a severe disease might interfere with the effectiveness of prevention programs. Considering the contextual factors that frame the etiological causes of a disease may help in finding effective and enduring solutions to target childhood obesity.

Mother-reported parental weight talk and adolescent girls’ emotional health, weight control attempts, and disordered eating behaviors

Abstract:BackgroundThe aim of this paper is to explore the relationships between mothers’ report of parental weight talk about her daughter, herself, and others, and adolescent girls’ weight-related behaviors and cognitions among a socio-demographically diverse population of mothers and their adolescent daughters.MethodsData were drawn from the baseline assessment of 218 mother/adolescent daughter dyads. Mothers completed survey items regarding the frequency of weight talk by parents, and girls completed survey items assessing outcomes including body dissatisfaction, depressive symptomology, use of extreme weight control methods, and binge eating.ResultsMore frequent comments to daughters about their weight were associated with higher depressive symptomology (p = 0.041), greater prevalence of extreme weight control behaviors (p = 0.040), and greater prevalence of binge eating (p = 0.048) among girls after adjustment for socio-demographic characteristics and girls’ standardized body mass index (BMI). For example, among girls whose parents never commented on their weight, 4.2% reported use of any extreme weight control behaviors, while 23.2% of girls whose parents frequently commented on their weight reported use of any of these behaviors. Mothers’ more frequent talk about their own weight, shape, or size was associated with lower self-worth (p = 0.007) and higher depressive symptomology (p = 0.004) among girls.ConclusionsFrequent parental weight talk as perceived by mothers was associated with adolescent girls’ use of harmful weight control methods and poor psychological health, while no associations were found between weight talk and girls’ use of healthful weight control strategies. Interventions that help parents create a family environment that supports healthful activities while reducing weight-related talk may be particularly effective in decreasing the prevalence of harmful outcomes among adolescent girls.

Protective Eating Behaviors Among Children at Higher Risk for Obesity in the INSIGHT Study

Abstract:Background: Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is positively associated with offspring overweight. We investigated behaviors that may confer resilience to childhood overweight development by examining appetitive traits in at-risk children born to mothers with pre-pregnancy overweight. Methods: This secondary analysis included children born to mothers with pre-pregnancy BMI ≥25 kg/m2 from the Intervention Nurses Start Infants Growing on Health Trajectories Study (N = 84). Mothers completed the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) at child ages 30 months and 6 years. t-tests assessed differences in appetitive traits (CEBQ subscale scores) between children with overweight (BMI ≥85th percentile) and without overweight (BMI <85th percentile). Results: The 87 children (41 female [47%]) included in this analysis were predominantly White and non-Hispanic (93%), and 34 (39%) had overweight at age 6 years. Compared with children with overweight, children without overweight had mothers who reported greater child slowness in eating when their child was 30 months (p = 0.04) and 6 years old (p = 0.004). Similarly, mothers of children without overweight reported higher child satiety responsiveness, lower enjoyment of food, and lower food responsiveness (p < 0.001 for all) when their child was 6 years old. Conclusion: Eating slower, higher satiety responsiveness, lower enjoyment of food, and lower food responsiveness were protective factors against developing overweight among those with familial risk. Strategies to promote the development of slower eating and satiety responsiveness could be explored as part of obesity prevention strategies.

Abstract:Maternal gestational obesity is related to risk of obesity in the child. This risk may be in part mediated by altered child temperament, which can affect mother–child interactions, including feeding and soothing behaviors that affect obesity risk. Our objective was to examine the association between maternal pre‐pregnancy BMI and child zBMI and determine if child temperament, specifically positive Affectivity/Surgency, mediates this association. Using conditional process modeling, we analyzed data from 408 mother–child dyads enrolled in the Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition (APrON) study. Child temperament was assessed at 3 years of age via a parent report measure, the Child Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ), and child zBMI was calculated from in‐person measurements of child height and weight at 4–5 years of age. Bivariate correlations showed that there was a significant positive correlation between zBMI and Surgency (r = 0.11, p = 0.03), and zBMI was also correlated with maternal pre‐pregnancy BMI (r = 0.12, p = 0.02). Multivariable regression revealed that maternal pre‐pregnancy BMI (adjusted β = 0.15, 95% confidence interval [CI]; 0.00–0.05, p = 0.02) and Surgency scores (adjusted β = 0.14, 95% CI; 0.02–0.28, p = 0.03) were associated with higher child zBMI at 4–5 years of age. Mediation analysis showed that Surgency mediated the association between pre‐pregnancy BMI and child zBMI. Our models controlled for maternal gestational weight gain, gestational diabetes, socioeconomic status, maternal anxiety and depression, and gestational age at birth. Overall, maternal pre‐pregnancy BMI was positively associated with child zBMI, and this association was mediated by higher child Surgency scores.

Abstract:Healthy nutritional habits are of vital importance for good health and quality of life for all individuals in all life stages. Nutritional habits shaped in early childhood set the foundation for future dietary practices applied through lifespan, hence informing risk towards chronic diseases. A key contributor to child health is maternal impact. A healthy childhood status translates into increased lifespan, health, and life-quality, as well as better family and social interactions and improved academic performance. These conditions can contribute to a healthier and more vibrant workforce, and thus extend positive impact on the economic and overall development of a country. Evidence related to maternal impact on childhood dietary habits is limited in Turkey, an emerging economy with notable disparities and a significant segment (approximately one third) of its 83 million population under the age of 30. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the socioeconomic status (SES) of mothers on the dietary habits of their preschool children. A pilot cross-sectional observational study was conducted involving the mothers of 109 preschool children aged 4–6 years. Data on the nutritional status of children were collected through a food frequency questionnaire and a 24-h recall interview, while sociodemographic information was also collected, and statistical analyses conducted. An unexpected finding regarding the lack of association between the socioeconomic and employment status of mothers and the nutritional intakes of their children was observed. Interestingly, it appears that more traditional societal and nutritional practices typically undertaken in the case of lower SES, especially in more traditional settings like the case of Turkey, appear to extend a protective effect as per the nutritional habits and ensuing obesity risk in the case of children of women with lower SES. Another way to interpret our finding is that the difference in education and SES is not adequate to produce a significant effect in terms of children dietary intake. This is an interesting finding that warrants further study. Additionally, such studies serve to increase awareness about the importance of healthy nutritional practices in preschool children and the critical role of the mother on their nutritional status, particularly in the Turkish idiosyncratic setting.
Pathways of Parental Education on Children's and Adolescent's Body Mass Index: The Mediating Roles of Behavioral and Psychological Factors

Abstract:Aim The increasing body mass index (BMI) often followed by overweight and obesity is a global health problem of the 21st century. Children and adolescents with lower socioeconomic status are more affected than their counterparts. The mechanisms behind these differences must be well understood to develop effective prevention strategies. This analysis aims at examining the association of parental education as an indicator of the socioeconomic status on children's and adolescent's body mass index and the role of behavioral and psychological risk factors for a higher BMI longitudinally. Methods The analysis was based on a nationwide sample of N = 460 children and adolescents, aged 11 to 17 at baseline (2009–2012), who took part in the representative BELLA study, the mental health module of the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey among Children and Adolescents (KiGGS). A follow-up was conducted 5 years later. Using mediation analyses, the mediating effects of breakfast consumption, consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, screen time, physical activity, mental health problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), and health-related quality of life (KIDSCREEN-10) on the association of parent's years of education on their children's BMI were investigated. Results A lower level of parental education was significantly associated with a higher BMI in children and adolescents 5 years later. The association was partially mediated by breakfast consumption and total screen time, with breakfast consumption mediating 16.7% and total screen time 27.8% of the association. After controlling for age, gender, and migration status, only breakfast consumption remained a partial mediator (8.5%). Other included variables had no mediating effects. Conclusions Preventive measures should be mainly targeted at children and adolescents of parents with lower educational levels. Tailored strategies to prevent the development of overweight and obesity in this population among children and adolescents should promote daily breakfast consumption at home and reducing screen time.

Abstract:We aimed first to assess associations between maternal health characteristics and newborn metabolite concentrations and second to assess associations between metabolites associated with maternal health characteristics and child body mass index (BMI). This study included 3492 infants enrolled in three birth cohorts with linked newborn screening metabolic data. Maternal health characteristics were ascertained from questionnaires, birth certificates, and medical records. Child BMI was ascertained from medical records and study visits. We used multivariate analysis of variance, followed by multivariable linear/proportional odds regression, to determine maternal health characteristic-newborn metabolite associations. Significant associations were found in discovery and replication cohorts of higher pre-pregnancy BMI with increased C0 and higher maternal age at delivery with increased C2 (C0: discovery: aβ 0.05 [95% CI 0.03, 0.07]; replication: aβ 0.04 [95% CI 0.006, 0.06]; C2: discovery: aβ 0.04 [95% CI 0.003, 0.08]; replication: aβ 0.04 [95% CI 0.02, 0.07]). Social Vulnerability Index, insurance, and residence were also associated with metabolite concentrations in a discovery cohort. Associations between metabolites associated with maternal health characteristics and child BMI were modified from 1–3 years (interaction: p < 0.05). These findings may provide insights on potential biologic pathways through which maternal health characteristics may impact fetal metabolic programming and child growth patterns.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate preschoolers’ eating behaviors and parents’ attitudes. Methods This descriptive observational study employed a convenience sampling method to investigate the eating behavior of preschool children aged 3-6 years. Data was collected through a Personal and Parent Information Form and the Children’s Eating Behavior Inventory. The study included 206 participants, and the findings provide insights into parental attitudes toward feeding and children’s eating behaviors in 3-6 age group. Results The study sample included 206 parents of children between the ages of 3 and 6, with the majority of children having a normal weight. Parents’ responses to the survey questions revealed significant correlations between children’s weight percentiles and parental education level, maternal body mass index level, and income level. Positive eating behaviors in children were positively correlated with parental age and education level, income level, child age, and child percentile level, while negative eating behaviors were negatively correlated with parental age, educational status, income level, and positively correlated with maternal body mass index level. Gender differences were observed, with male children exhibiting lower mean scores in negative eating behaviors, maternal views and behaviors, child food preparation behavior, and negative meal situations compared to female children. Conclusion We found that parental education level and income level were correlated with children’s positive eating behavior, while they were negatively associated with negative eating behavior. Negative eating behavior and food preparation behavior were lower in boys than in girls.

Abstract:Background The composition and amount of breast milk is affected by factors such as the duration and frequency of breastfeeding, the time between two breastfeeding sessions, the effectiveness of breastfeeding, breastfeeding technique, genetic characteristics of the mother and diet. Breast milk macronutrients are provided by milk synthesized in lactocytes, mother's diet and maternal stores. Research Aim This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the body composition of mothers and the anthropometric characteristics of the baby and the nutritional content of breast milk. Method The descriptive study was conducted between March and November 2023 in a hospital in a low socioeconomic neighbourhood in Turkey. The study sample consisted of 96 mothers and ibabies. Anthropometric measurements of mothers and babies and the nutrient content of breast milk were evaluated on the first postpartum day, Days 5 and 15. Breast milk macronutrient content was analyzed by Miris milk analyzer and body composition of mothers was analyzed by TANITA BC 730. Results From the weight and body composition of the mothers in the study group; a positive correlation was found between body fat, muscle and water ratio, and breast milk carnonhydrate and protein (p 0.05).
