Abstract:When explaining to a lay audience the magnitude of forces or accelerations imparted to vehicles or experienced by vehicle occupants during a motor vehicle collision, it is often helpful to recast the critical results in terms of other physical systems or impact configurations which will reproduce the equivalent dynamics of the subject accident to serve as a conceptual aid for the audience. In this article, we present the basis for such equivalents and explicitly demonstrate, using two physics simulation software packages, that such equivalents are based on nothing more than the application of the laws of physics.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to analyze, by means of a kinematic approach, the problem of the impact between rigid bodies, when the surfaces involved in the impulsive phenomenon are of finite extent. The formulation here adopted permits to use the Gauss variational principle of “least compulsion” and to formulate the dynamic evolution of the system, after an impact, as a minimization problem. In this case, among all the possible subsequent motions, the real one is that which minimizes the kinetic energy connected to the sudden velocities variations. Interesting results are obtained in the case of the impact between a rigid column (either monolithic or made of several blocks) and a rigid ground. In particular, it can be shown that if the previous motion of a rigid block is a rotation around its base corner edge, the motion after the impact is either a rototranslation or merely a translation, depending on the dimensional ratio. In any case, the subsequent motion is characterized by a component of sliding, so that the impact plays the role of filter between the possible degrees of freedom of the system and, at the same time, determines a possible coupling between rotation and translation. This conclusion is a novelty with respect to the results obtained in other papers [4–6], where a classical approach for the impact has been adopted.

Abstract:The differential equations for planar impacts reduce to an algebraic form, and can be easily solved. For three dimensional impacts with friction, there is no closed-form solution, and numerical integration is required due to the swerve behavior of tangential impulse during collisions. The dynamic governing equations in the impact process are built up in impulse space based on the Lagrangian equation in this paper. The coefficient of restitution defined by Poisson is used as the condition of impact termination. A valid numerical method for solving three-dimensional frictional impact of multi-rigid body system is established. The singular cases of tangential movement in sticking point are especially noticed and analyzed. Several examples are present to reveal the different kinds of tangential movement modes varied with the normal impulse during collision.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to implement and test the theory presented in a companion paper for the non-smooth dynamics exhibited in a bouncing dimer. Our approach revolves around the use of rigid body dynamics theory combined with constraint equations from the Coulomb's frictional law and the complementarity condition to identify the contact status of each contacting point. A set of impulsive differential equations based on Darboux–Keller shock dynamics is established that can deal with the complex behaviours involved in multiple collisions, such as the frictional effects, the local dissipation of energy at each contact point, and the dispersion of energy among various contact points. The paper will revisit the experimental phenomena found in Dorbolo et al . ( Dorbolo et al . 2005 Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 , 044101), and then present a qualitative analysis based on the theory proposed in part I. The value of the static coefficient of friction between the plate and the dimer is successfully estimated, and found to be responsible for the formation of the drift motion of the bouncing dimer. Plenty of numerical simulations are carried out, and precise agreements are obtained by the comparisons with the experimental results.

Abstract:Although vehicles as a whole are symmetric, car crashes rarely follow the symmetric line (crashes are axisymmetric). In this paper, we examine car crashes by an updated Momentum 360 method, and car symmetry helps us easily find out what happens within the accident. We propose an improvement of the Momentum 360 method by taking into account the frictional forces between the wheels and the road surface during the time of impact. According to the momentum change theorem for the duration of the impact for each car and the kinetic moment change theorem for the relative motion of the given vehicle around its center of mass, the impact problem is introduced and solved. The solution considers the impulses of the principal vectors of the wheel friction forces, the gravity force, and the aerodynamic force for each car at the time of impact, as well as the principal moments of the friction forces between the tires and the road surface as a function of time. A mechano-mathematical multi-mass 3D model and a computer simulation of the movement ("Expertcar" software) are used to study the movement of each vehicle after the impact. Through successive approximations, the velocity vectors of the mass centers of the vehicle immediately before the impact are determined, and the location of the impact is identified. The presented decision model significantly improves the accuracy of road accident investigations.
Experimental evaluation of underride analysis techniques and empirical validation of a new analytical technique

Abstract:Accident reconstructionists are often faced with damage patterns and locations on vehicles that are not well defined by available barrier impact data. One such example is a frontal underride collision. Underride impacts occur when there is a height mismatch between the primary structural components of the impacting vehicles, and the vehicle with the lower height is forced beneath the structure of the other vehicle. The lack of structural engagement typically allows for significantly different damage patterns due to the inherently lower stiffness of the underriding vehicle's contacting surfaces coupled with complex interactions between varying surfaces. In this study, a series of two-vehicle impact tests between a small pickup (bullet vehicle) and a large dump truck (target vehicle) were performed and studied. These tests involved a severe underride configuration in which the dump truck bed's vertical alignment was above the base of the windshield of the pickup. Coupled with these impacting surfaces was a single vertical support, a remnant of a commonly referred to ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission) bumper, which caused a narrow object-type impact, but did not extend down to the pickup's bumper. Multiple prior authors' analytical and empirical relationships to predict impact speed based on crush damage were evaluated using the results of these tests as well as other published underride tests. No single model was sufficient at predicting the mixed mode of impact present in these impact scenarios. However, a system of equations was developed to predict the impact parameters utilizing a combination of previously reported methods and a new empirical relationship presented in this study. This new method shows high correlation and supports the authors' hypothesis that separate crush models can be applied to multiple discrete areas of a vehicle and then combined to form a more complete predictive systematic model.

Abstract:In this paper a computational methodology on impact dynamics of the flexible multibody system is presented. First, the floating frame of reference approach and nodal coordinates on the basis of finite element formulation are used to describe the kinematics of planar deformable bodies. According to the kinematic description of contact conditions, the contact constraint equations of planar flexible bodies are derived. Based on the varying topology technique the impact dynamic equations for a planar multibody system are established. Then the initial conditions of the equations in each contact stage are determined according to the discontinuity theory in continuum mechanics. The experiments between the aluminum rods are performed to check the correctness of the proposed method. Through the comparison between the numerical and experimental results the proposed method is validated. Experimental results also show that the impulse momentum method cannot accurately predict the complex impact dynamic phenomena and the continuous model may lead to a serious error when used to simulate the impact problems with significant wave propagation effects.
An optimization approach to establish dynamical equivalence for soft and rigid impact models

Abstract:This paper studies a computational approach aimed at establishing equivalent dynamical responses within oscillatory impacting systems subject to soft and rigid constraints. The proposed method incorporates an adaptive differential evolution algorithm with the Metropolis criterion to determine the stiffness and damping parameters of the soft constraint for a prescribed coefficient of restitution governing the rigid constraint. The proposed algorithm aims to establish an equivalent dynamical response of the two models based on constraints regarding energy dissipation and contact time duration. Upon examining the dynamical responses of the two impact cases, they exhibit nearly identical outcomes in the two-parameter bifurcation diagrams when subjected to a large restitution coefficient. However, discrepancies arise between the results of the two models when the restitution coefficient is low. Detailed numerical tests, conducted using the proposed method, demonstrate enhanced effectiveness compared to previous techniques, such as the prediction formulas for the different related soft impact model outlined by Okolewski and Blazejczyk-Okolewska [Chaos 31(8), 083110 (2021)]. This method not only finds application in experimentally identifying the physical properties of an impact surface but also provides convenience in employing soft models within impacting systems, which could then avoid potential inaccuracies in handling discontinuities by some integrator during velocity jumps before and after impacts.

Abstract:A clear and precise model can provide us a comprehensive as well as profound understanding of rollover of vehicle. By comparing the traditional dynamic analysis model and roller model, the limitation of the latter is studied in detail. A more precise roller model based on momentum conservation law with several indispensable geometric and vehicle factors is considered. Parameters in time history are input into the model to study the rollover phenomenon in vehicle motion, providing a strong foundation for further rollover accident reconstruction and analysis.

Abstract:Low velocity impact behavior of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic laminates are analyzed in this article. Governing equations are derived based on the first-order shear deformation theory and Hamilton's principle. The impact contact force history between the impactor and laminate is formulated by the Hertzian contact law. A Ritz-based solution in space domain for various boundary conditions is developed. Solutions of the system equations in time domain are solved by the Newmark's time integration scheme. Impact parameters such as impact force history, indentation history, and contact time are considered. The accuracy of this method is validated by comparing the obtained results with those from the ABAQUS/Explicit software simulation. The effects of impact velocity, plate geometrical parameters, stacking sequence, and temperature on the dynamic response of laminates under clamped boundary condition and support boundary condition were discussed.

Abstract:Impact problems on planar multi-rigid-body systems with friction are considered.When friction cannot be ignored,there are the following problems to be solved.First,the phenomenon of slip-stick and slip-reversal at the frictional applied point can cause the change of direction of the frictional force and make it difficult to integrate the frictional force over the impact interval according to the traditional impulsive dynamics of multi-rigid-body systems.Second, absolute values of unknown constraint reactions due to Coulomb frictional law are included in the dynamical equations.Furthermore,the singularity due to the coupling between frictional forces and normal reactions may arise in calculating unknown reactions.Piecewise analysis over the period of different motion is used to overcome the energy inconsistence and the sign function is introduced to solve the second problem.The singularity problem is solved by the method of tangential impact.The analytical impact solution for multi-rigid-body systems with friction at one joint is obtained,i.e.,the dynamic generalized velocities after impact can be obtained according to initial conditions and geometry properties of the system before impact by using the provided formulation.This method can avoid the difficulties in solving differential equations with variable scale and the results can avoid the energy inconsistency before and after impact due to considering the complex of the sliding mode.The singularity can be predicted by this method and draw a conclusion that the work at the impulse/velocity level cannot avoid the singularity for this sort of system.The example implies that the scheme provided in the paper is valid.

Abstract:In order to provide new proof for accident reconstruction,the method of occupant kinematics reconstruction using the coupling of momentum-based method and multi-body dynamics method was studied.For realizing the couple between two algorithms,an equivalent acceleration impulse was substituted for the real impact.Based on a real accident,a three dimension multi-body model including dummy,vehicle and ground was established.Using the coupling method,the kinematics of two occupants involved in the accident was reconstructed,and the influence of the momentum exchange time was also considered.The feasibility of this method was verified by the forensic medical identification.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to develop a simplified numerical model that can be used to accurately and quickly conduct the collapse analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) frames impacted by vehicle in 45-degree oblique direction. The simplified numerical model included introduce of a simplified RC frame and a simplified vehicle. For the simplified RC frame, a mixed modeling technique was used in which structural components that experienced serious damage were simulated using detailed elements, while the retained structural components were simulated by macro elements. A constraint algorithm of nodal rigid body in LS-DYNA was adopted to guarantee the displacement compatibility of two kinds of element. For the simplified vehicle model, the spring-mass system was improved on the basis of the energy conservation principle to represent the vehicle in a 45-degree oblique impact. Combining the simplified RC frame model and vehicle model, the impact response of RC frame subjected to vehicle impact was studied and compared with the results of detailed RC frame model impacted by detailed vehicle. The validation confirmed that these introduced simplifications could significantly improve the computational efficiency and ensure the computational accuracy for the collapse analysis of RC frame subjected to vehicle impact.

The expressions build upon previous work by the author on first-order partial derivatives of inverse dynamics. The first/second-order derivatives are also extended for systems with external forces. Finally, the KKT Forward dynamics and Impact dynamics derivatives are derived.

A Simple Dynamic Model for Aggressive, Near-Limits Trajectory Planning

Abstract:In normal on-road situations, autonomous vehicles will be expected to have smooth trajectories with relatively little demand on the vehicle dynamics to ensure passenger comfort and driving safety. However, the occurrence of unexpected events may require vehicles to perform aggressive maneuvers, near the limits of their dynamic capacities. In order to ensure the occupant's safety in these situations, the ability to plan controllable but near-limits trajectories will be of very high importance. One of the main issues in planning aggressive maneuvers lies in the high complexity of the vehicle dynamics near the handling limits, which effectively makes state-of-the-art methods such as Model Predictive Control difficult to use. This article studies a highly precise model of the vehicle body to derive a simpler, constrained second-order integrator dynamic model which remains precise even near the handling limits of the vehicle. Preliminary simulation results indicate that our model provides better accuracy without increasing computation time compared to a more classical kinematic bicycle model. The proposed model can find applications for contingency planning, which may require aggressive maneuvers, or for trajectory planning at high speed, for instance in racing applications.

Abstract:The research for the complex properties of visco-elastic material in various impact conditions have been interesting and difficult problems, especially in the auto-crash safety engineering process. In this paper an application of boundary-layer computing for the non-Newtonian rate type impact hardening and share thinning phenomenon are discussed. The numerical scheme yields the convergent finite element analysis (FEA) solution and stable semi-discrete Galerkin-Runge-Kutta(G-RK) iteration. To develope the passive protection model based on the non-recover solid metal (phase1) impact, we are deepening our knowledge of soft material recover protection (phase2) concept. The high performance computing (HPC) tool enabled us to carry out the research on the passive safety analysis with engineering; computing.

Abstract:Objective Finite element (FE) reconstructions of motor vehicle crashes using human body models are effective tools for developing a better understanding of occupant kinematics and injuries in real-world lateral crash conditions, but current near-side reconstruction methods are limited by the paucity of full-scale FE vehicle models. The objective of this study was to validate a generic vehicle model equipped with left-side airbags and intrusion capability by simulating a series of near-side crash tests for a range of vehicles and assessing model accuracy using objective evaluation methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the capabilities of a generalized kinematic (Newton’s like) restitution law for the modeling of a planar rigid block that impacts a rigid ground. This kinematic restitution law is based on a specific state transformation of the Lagrangian dynamics, using the kinetic metric on the configuration space. It allows one to easily derive a restitution rule for multiple impacts. The relationships with the classical angular velocity restitution coefficient r for rocking motion are examined in detail. In particular, it is shown that r has the interpretation of a tangential restitution coefficient. The case when Coulomb’s friction is introduced at the contact impulse level together with an angular velocity restitution is analyzed. A simple chain of aligned balls is also examined, illustrating that the impact law applies to various types of multibody systems.
