Abstract:A terahertz thermally tuned window based on the combination of metamaterial with the phase change material VO2 is proposed. It is composed of a sandwich structure of vanadium oxide films. The thermochromic phase change properties of VO2 are the key to the functionality of the window. By controlling the temperature around the room temperature of 300 K, our design can be used as a smart window. It means that the smart window is able to regulate both the absorption and transmission of external terahertz waves in response to changes in temperature. The absorbance can be regulated by more than 90% and the transmittance by more than 80%. The switching characteristics of the window will be explained by the phase transition theory IMT of vanadium oxide during heating process, while the theory of localized surface plasmon will be used to explain the perfect absorption. In addition, the designed window will not only be polarisation insensitive, thermally flexible but will also maintain excellent window performance over a wide angular range from 0° to 40°. Such a design will have significant potential for applications in stealth, thermal sensing, switching and terahertz energy harvesting etc.

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a promising material for developing energy-saving "smart windows," owing to its infrared thermochromism induced by metal-insulator transition (MIT). However, its practical application is greatly limited by its relatively high critical temperature (~68°C), low luminous transmittance (<60%), and poor solar energy regulation ability (<15%). Here, we developed a reversible and nonvolatile electric field control of the MIT of a monoclinic VO2 film. With a solid electrolyte layer assisting gating treatment, we modulated the insertion/extraction of hydrogen into/from the VO2 lattice at room temperature, causing tristate phase transitions that enable control of light transmittance. The dramatic increase in visible/infrared transmittance due to the phase transition from the metallic (lightly H-doped) to the insulating (heavily H-doped) phase results in an increased solar energy regulation ability up to 26.5%, while maintaining 70.8% visible luminous transmittance. These results break all previous records and exceed the theoretical limit for traditional VO2 smart windows, making them ready for energy-saving utilization.

Abstract:With the rapid development of detection technologies, compatible stealth in the infrared and radar ranges has become increasingly essential not only for military application but also for personal privacy protection. In this study, we design a metamaterial window that possesses stealth ability in both the thermal infrared and broadband microwave ranges, using a particle swarm optimization algorithm to realize multi-band optimization. We experimentally verify that the proposed structure can achieve over 90% microwave absorption in the range 5.1 to 19.2 GHz (covering the X and Ku bands), with low infrared emissivity (similar to 0.15), and also maintain visible transmittance above 60%. Moreover, the window retains good performance up to 200 degrees C owing to the intrinsic properties of the material. Our multi-band optimization method enables the application of the transparent metamaterial windows in electromagnetic shielding and stealth and can potentially be applied in smart window related industries. Abstract:Smart windows (SWs) with tunable opacity are sought to regulate solar‐irradiation and privacy protection. A new smart window material based on a phase‐changing polymer that can be reversibly switched between a semicrystalline, opaque state and an amorphous, transparent state is introduced. The polymer film is a network of the phase‐changing poly(stearyl acrylate) crosslinked with a poly(ethylene oxide) oligomer. The two constituent polymers show strong phase separation. The transmission switching of the resulting copolymer film is resulted from the combination of three different mechanisms: reversible phase changing of the poly(stearyl acrylate) component, phase separation between the two distinct constituent polymers, and a large change of refractive index of the phase‐changing polymer during the amorphous‐to‐semicrystalline transition. The opaqueness switching can be reversed and repeated for more than 500 cycles of heating and cooling. A silver nanowire (AgNW)‐based transparent heater is combined with the SW film to control the semicrystalline‐to‐amorphous phase transition. The resulting smart window exhibits a high infrared transmittance modulation (ΔT IR) of 80.4% and solar transmittance modulation (ΔT solar) of 70.2%, which significantly outperform existing thermochromic smart windows.

Abstract:TTRC smart window presents high luminous transmittance (Tlum = 56.8%), perfect NIR shielding (TNIR = 3.4%), bidirectional transparency adjustment ability unavailable in other transparent radiative coolers based on photonic structures (ΔTlum = 54.2%), and high emittance in the atmospheric window (over 94%). The architectural window with spectrally selective features and radiative cooling is an effective way to save building energy consumption. However, architectural windows that combine both functions are currently based on micro‐nano photonic structures, which undoubtedly hinder their commercial application due to the complexity of manufacture. Herein, a novel tunable visible light transmittance radiative cooling smart window (TTRC smart window) with perfect near‐infrared (NIR) shielding ability is manufactured via a mass‐producible scraping method. TTRC smart window presents high luminous transmittance (Tlum = 56.8%), perfect NIR shielding (TNIR = 3.4%), bidirectional transparency adjustment ability unavailable in other transparent radiative coolers based on photonic structures (ΔTlum = 54.2%), and high emittance in the atmospheric window (over 94%). Outdoor measurements confirm that smart window can reduce 8.2 and 6.6 °C, respectively, compared to ordinary glass and indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. Moreover, TTRC smart window can save over 20% of annual energy in the tropics compared to ITO and ordinary glass. The simple preparation method employed in this work and the superior optical properties of the smart window have significantly broadened the scope of application of architectural windows and advanced the commercialization of architectural windows.

Abstract:Thermochromic smart windows are optical devices that can regulate their optical properties actively in response to external temperature changes. Due to their simple structures and as they do not require other additional energy supply devices, they have great potential in building energy-saving. However, conventional thermochromic smart windows generally have problems with high response temperatures and low response rates. Owing to their great effect in photothermal conversion, photothermal materials are often used in smart windows to assist phase transition so that they can quickly achieve the dual regulation of light and heat at room temperature. Based on this, research progress on the phase transition of photothermal material-assisted thermochromic smart windows is summarized. In this paper, the phase transition mechanisms of several thermochromic materials (VO2, liquid crystals, and hydrogels) commonly used in the field of smart windows are introduced. Additionally, the applications of carbon-based nanomaterials, noble metal nanoparticles, and semiconductor (metal oxygen/sulfide) nanomaterials in thermochromic smart windows are summarized. The current challenges and solutions are further indicated and future research directions are also proposed.

Abstract:Thermochromic coatings hold promise in reducing building energy consumption by dynamically regulating the heat gain of windows, which are often regarded as less energy-efficient components, across different seasons. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) stands out as a versatile thermochromic material for smart windows owing to its reversible metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) alongside correlated structural and optical properties. In this review, we delve into recent advancements in the phase-change VO2-based thermochromic coatings for smart windows, spanning from the macroscopic crystal level to the microscopic structural level (including elemental doping and micro/nano-engineering), as well as advances in controllable fabrication. It is notable that hybridizing functional elements/materials (e.g., W, Mo/SiO2, TiN) with VO2 in delicate structural designs (e.g., core-shell, optical cavity) brings new degrees of freedom for controlling the thermochromic properties, including the MIT temperature, luminous transmittance, solar-energy modulation ability and building-relevant multi-functionality. Additionally, we provide an overview of alternative chromogenic materials that could potentially complement or surpass the intrinsic limitations of VO2. By examining the landscape of emerging materials, we aim to broaden the scope of possibilities for smart window technologies. We also offer insights into the current challenges and prospects of VO2-based thermochromic smart windows, presenting a roadmap for advancing this field towards enhanced energy efficiency and sustainable building design. In summary, this review innovatively categorizes doping strategies and corresponding effects of VO2, underscores their crucial NIR-energy modulation ability for smart windows, pioneers a theoretical analysis of inverse core-shell structures, prioritizes practical engineering strategies for solar modulation in VO2 films, and summarizes complementary chromogenic materials, thus ultimately advancing VO2-based smart window technologies with a fresh perspective.

Abstract:Being a major impediment, the development of advanced smart windows with exceptional thermoregulation in both the visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) and the long-wave infrared remains a significant aspiration to scholars. Herein, an innovative strategy was implemented to achieve self-adaptive smart window that seamlessly integrates the thermochromic and radiative cooling technologies (TRSW), and holds great potential in effectively addressing the intricate thermal radiation requirements arising from unpredictable climatic conditions. The TRSW demonstrated an impressive capacity to regulate solar energy through automatic modulation of emissivity (ε) at both high (εLWIR-H = 0.68) and low (εLWIR-L = 0.35) temperatures, while effectively maintaining Vis-NIR regulation (20.12%). Moreover, the results of TRSW’s outdoor performance exhibited its efficiency in implementing dual solar energy transmission modes, effectively inhibiting the Vis-NIR transmission to mitigate solar overheating in high-temperature conditions, while diminishing heat dissipation and promoting radiative cooling in low-temperature situations. Compared to conventional cooling materials, the dynamic emissivity modulation of TRSW provided an effective approach to prevent overcooling at lower temperatures. Consequently, TRSW fostered an efficient synergy between the solar transmittance modulation (ΔTsol) and Δε, which led to heightened modulation of the entire spectrum and facilitated exceptional thermal management. This work paves an intriguing prospect of developing advanced smart windows with remarkable thermoregulation and promises a wide range of thermal regulation applications, such as windows, roofs, walls, and advanced textiles.

Abstract:Smart window structures based on highly conductive, transparent ZnO/Au/Al2O3 nanomesh structures with state of the art figures of merit integrated with thermochromic perovskite films are demonstrated. Optical transparency is manipulated by transient resistive heating to trigger a thermochromic transition. The resulting climate‐adaptive, low power‐activated, and fast‐switching smart window structure is promising for the next‐generation perovskite‐based smart photovoltaic windows. Smart windows are energy‐efficient windows whose optical transparency can be switched between highly transparent and opaque states in response to incident solar illumination. Transparent and conductive metal nanomesh (NM) films are promising candidates for thermochromic smart windows due to their excellent thermal conductivity, high optical transparency at near infrared wavelengths, and outstanding stability. In this study, ZnO/Au/Al2O3 NM films with periodicities of 200 and 370 nm are reported. The ZnO/Au/Al2O3 NM film with a 370 nm periodicity exhibits a transmittance over 90% at 550 nm and sheet resistance lower than 20 Ω sq−1. Based on a standard figure of merit, this structure outperforms current state‐of‐the‐art NM films. Here, the integration of ZnO/Au/Al2O3 NM films into a thermochromic perovskite smart window is also demonstrated. The transparency of the smart window structure is manipulated by transient resistive heating to trigger the thermochromic transition to the opaque state, which can be then maintained solely by 1‐sun, AM 1.5 G illumination. This climate‐adaptive, low power‐activated, and fast‐switching smart window structure opens new pathways toward its practical application in the real world.

Abstract:The rising need for energy to actively heat and cool human-made structures is contributing to the growing energy crisis and intensifying global warming. Consequently, there's a pressing need for a sustainable approach to temperature management that minimizes energy consumption and carbon emissions. The substantial temperature differences between the Sun (approximately 5800 K), Earth (around 300 K), and outer space (about 3 K) offer a unique opportunity for passive thermal regulation on a global scale. Recent research indicates the possibility of addressing this issue through various low-carbon, passive technologies such as solar heating and radiative cooling. However, their practical application is often limited to certain seasons and climatic regions due to their static and single-function nature in managing temperature. In this context, we introduce a concept of phase-change metamaterials that provide passive, dynamic, and adjustable radiative thermal control, suitable for widespread engineering applications. Our designed metafilm comprises a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer infused with vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles, backed by a layer of broadband-reflective silver (Ag). This metafilm exhibits a self-adjusting solar absorptance, shifting from 0.96 to 0.25 at a pivotal temperature while maintaining a nearly constant thermal emittance. We can finely tune the metafilm's optical characteristics by altering the VO2 nanoparticle concentration and PDMS layer thickness. To demonstrate its efficacy in solar thermal management and radiative cooling, we simulate its temperature behavior under various weather conditions.

Abstract:Transparent windows that insulate against infrared light and heat entering buildings hold the promise of reducing energy consumption. However, a long-standing challenge for energy-saving window materials is to concurrently achieve a large tuning of refractive index, broad transmission modulation, and near-room-temperature phase transition. Here, we report the insulation of heat and infrared radiation by using a functionally graded transparent nanocomposite consisting of a hollow network-nanoparticle hybrid. We demonstrate ΔT of 6.9°C by combining the light-reflectance properties of metallic nanoparticles and the thermal insulation of hollow shell networks, resulting in an equivalent cooling power of 396 W/m2 under a light intensity of 3 W/cm2. This flexible nanocomposite sheet shows a high transparency of 91.0%, low haze in the visible region, and a modulus of 160 MPa. The gradient nanocomposites combine UV light blocking, visible transparency, and infrared light shielding, potentially opening a new avenue for energy-saving building window applications.
Smart Windows with a VO 2 Thin Film as a Conductive Layer for Efficient and Independent Dual-Band Modulation

Abstract:Smart windows that can modulate the transmission of sunlight entering the room can significantly reduce energy consumption. Herein, we provide a simple structure for smart windows which can modulate the transmittance of visible (vis) light actively by an external electric field and modulate the transmittance of near-infrared (NIR) light passively by temperature. The dual-band control of vis and NIR light are achieved by polymer-dispersed liquid crystal, vanadium dioxide (VO2), and Al-doped ZnO. The VO2 thin film plays two roles: NIR light control and conductive layer. There are four optical modulation modes for this kind of smart window, that is, (1) vis and NIR light passing mode, (2) vis light blocking and NIR light passing mode, (3) vis light passing and NIR light blocking mode, and (4) vis and NIR light blocking mode. The transmittance in the vis range (T lum) can be reversibly and actively modulated between 0.38 and 39.93%, and the transmittance in solar irradiation (T solar) can be reversibly and passively modulated between 42.32 and 9.95%. In the meantime, the response time (t on) decreases from 114.5 to 5.2 ms when the VO2 thin film changes from monoclinic to rutile phase. The electro-optical measurement indicates smart windows with featured fast response time, long stability, and independent modulation ability. Besides, a house model testing proves an indoor temperature cooling of 7.7 °C. Smart windows with simple structure, large area preparation, and outstanding modulation ability are promising in energy saving in buildings and automobiles.

Abstract:This PRC PDLC smart window with millisecond‐scale responsiveness can realize stable and efficient thermal radiation due to the mid‐infrared emission of the polymer matrix originating from vibrations of intrinsic chemical bonds. In the meantime, controllable transparency of the PRC PDLC film enables the multistage modulation of daytime radiative cooling efficiency with different voltages. Switchable passive radiative cooling (PRC) smart windows can modulate sunlight transmission and spontaneously emit heat to outer space through atmospheric transparent window, presenting great potential in building energy conservation. However, realizing stable and on‐demand control of the cooling efficiency for PRC materials is still challenging. Herein, an electro‐controlled polymer‐dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) smart window showing PRC property is designed and prepared by adding mid‐infrared emitting reactive monomers into the conventional PDLC matrix. It is found that not only the electro‐optical properties but also the PRC efficiency of PRC PDLC film are tunable by regulating the content of the mid‐infrared emitting components, film thickness, and micromorphology. This advanced PRC PDLC material achieves a near/sub‐ambient temperature when the solar irradiance is below 400 W m−2 and can dynamically manage daytime cooling efficiency. Importantly, its PRC efficiency is capable of being tuned in an on‐demand and ultrafast millisecond‐scale way, whose controllable transparency enables multistage heat regulation. This study is hoped to provide new inspiration in the preparation of advanced optical devices and energy‐efficient equipment.

Broadly-tunable smart glazing using an ultra-thin phase-change material

Abstract:For many applications, a method for controlling the optical properties of a solid-state film over a broad wavelength range is highly desirable and could have significant commercial impact. One such application is smart glazing technology where it is necessary to harvest near-infrared solar radiation in the winter and reflect it in the summer--an impossibility for materials with fixed thermal and optical properties. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a smart window which uses a thin-film coating containing GeTe, a bi-stable, chalcogenide-based phase-change material which can modulate near-infrared absorption while maintaining neutral-colouration and constant transmission of light at visible wavelengths. We additionally demonstrate controlled down-conversion of absorbed near-infrared energy to far-infrared radiation which can be used to heat a building's interior and show that these thin-films also serve as low-emissivity coatings, reducing heat transfer between a building and its external environment throughout the year. Finally, we demonstrate fast, sub-millisecond switching using transparent electrical heaters integrated on glass substrates. These combined properties result in a smart window that is efficient, affordable, and aesthetically pleasing--three aspects which are crucial for successful adoption of green technology.

Abstract:This study introduces a sophisticated terahertz smart window crafted from VO 2 phase-change material. When the temperature rises to 345 K, this device displays impressive absorption capabilities, absorbing over 90 % of terahertz waves within the frequency bands of 1.888–5.552 THz (3.664 THz) and 11.088–12.896 THz (1.808 THz). Conversely, at lower temperatures (318 K), it showcases exceptional transparency, transmitting more than 80 % of terahertz waves in the 0–8.005 THz range. Notably, it achieves a peak absorption rate of 99.9 % at 12.112 THz. The device allows precise adjustment of absorption levels from 0 % to 99.9 %. We delve into the internal factors influencing the device's performance variability. Subsequently, we investigate the distribution of surface electric fields. The LSPR principle is used to reveal the underlying mechanisms driving dual-band absorption and extensive transmission. Additionally, we offer insights into altering the physical parameters of the smart window. The inherent structural coordination and manufacturing adaptability were revealed. Lastly, we explore how different incident angles impact the device's performance, noting its consistent excellence across a wide range of angles. This finding holds significant implications for the practical utility of the device. In summary, the proposed terahertz smart device has great application potential in communication, detection, detection and other fields, and can help realize extremely fast wireless data transmission (over 10Gbit/s). Abstract:Privacy and energy-saving are key functionalities for next-generation smart windows, while to achieve them independently on a window is challenging. Inspired by the cephalopod skin, we have developed a versatile thermo- and mechano-chromic design to overcome such challenge and reveal the mechanism via both experiments and simulations. The design is facile with good scalability, consisted of well-dispersed vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles (NPs) with temperature-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in transparent elastomers with dynamic micro wrinkles. While maintaining a fixed solar energy modulation of (ΔTsol), the design can dynamically control visible transmittance (Tvib) from 60% to 17%, adding a new dimension to VO2-based smart windows. We prove that the optical modulation relies on the microtexture-induced broadband diffraction and the plasmon-enhanced near-infrared absorbance of VO2 NPs. We further present a series of modified designs towards additional functionalities. This work opens an avenue for independent dual-mode windows and it may inspire development from fundamental material, optic, and mechanical science to energy-related applications.

Abstract:Current thermochromic smart windows based on lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior can achieve solar regulation and energy saving by modulating solar transmission at the cost of visibility at higher temperature. To tackle this issue, a new concept of smart window based on the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) characteristic of zwitterionic hydrogel has been developed, giving daytime luminous transparency, all day radiative cooling and nighttime privacy protection. This design rule is suitable for energy saving smart windows for regions where cooling demand is dominant. The UCST smart window panel provides moderate luminous transmission ( T lum ) of 37.1 % and low near-infrared transmission ( T NIR ) of 20.3 % during the daytime, all day near unity long-wave infrared emissivity ( Ɛ LWIR ) of 0.96 facing outdoor to promote radiative cooling with outer space, low Ɛ LWIR 0.19 facing indoor to suppress heat transfer, and low visible transmission ( T vis ) of 1.4 % at night mode for privacy protection. Energy-saving simulations demonstrate that compared to commercial low-emissivity (low-E) windows in three climate zones (zone 0, 1, 2), the UCST smart window achieves an impressive annual energy-saving up to 30.7 %. This work introduces a novel conceptual design specifically tailored for climate zones where cooling demands prevail, offering a combination of moderate luminous transparency, suppressed NIR transmission, excellent radiative cooling with outdoor environment and reduced heat transfer with indoor combining with an added privacy protection feature.

Abstract:Radiative cooling in smart windows using VO 2 – a dynamic thermal management material, is of potential interest for enhancing energy savings in buildings due to its both solar and emittance tuneability in response to changing temperatures. However, studies related to the effects of VO 2 thin film microstructure in a multilayer system on emissivity regulation are currently lacking. The present study addresses the thermochromic and emissivity performance of VO 2 /ZnSe/ITO/Glass Fabry−Perot (F–P) cavity thin film system, by manipulating the porosity in VO 2 thin film. The device is fabricated by commercially feasible physical vapor deposition methods such as sputtering and thermal evaporation, most suitable for mass production. The optimized sample with porous VO 2 delivers an enhanced long-wave infrared (LWIR) emissivity contrast of Δ ɛ LWIR ≥ 0.4 preserving a high visible transparency T lum(avg) of ∼41 % compared to dense VO 2 . Then finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation is performed to further understand the effects of varying VO 2 porosity and ZnSe thickness on the F–P cavity properties. The reduced low-temperature ɛ LWIR (0.1–0.2) gives this film better energy saving in regions where warming demand is dominant as simulated by EnergyPlus.
