Abstract:In the discussion of this chapter we are concerned primarily with the work on the theory of personality of five men. In addition to Freud and Lewin, these include Otto Rank, William McDougall, and Harry Stack Sullivan. Since it is manifestly impossible to deal with the major contributions of each in their entirety, it will be necessary to restrict discussion to those aspects which appear most significant for an attempt at theoretical integration. In this connection it appears important to note not only points that are critical for or consonant with a general theory but also those that are strikingly incompatible or leave crucial questions unanswered. Even with material thus confined, it will be necessary to resort to condensation and, in many instances, to forgo elaboration or example that might otherwise illuminate the discussion.
