Abstract:In the field of digital humanities, color research aims to discover explanations for painting history and color usage habits. However, researchers analyzing color relationships is challenging and time-consuming, as it requires color extraction and a detailed review of many painting images for reference and comparison of color relationships. In our work, we propose ColorNetVis, an interactive color network analysis tool that enables researchers to explore color relationships through color networks. The core of ColorNetVis is a bipartite network model that establishes a bipartite relationship between colors and Chinese painting within a scope based on color difference measurement. It constructs a one-mode color network through projection algorithms and similarity calculation methods to discover the relationship between colors. We propose a coordinated set of views to demonstrate the combination of determined color networks with painting types and real-world attributes. We use color space view, color attribute distribution view, and single color query components to assist researchers in conducting detailed color analysis and validation. Through case studies, researcher reviews, and user studies, we demonstrate that ColorNetVis can effectively help researchers discover knowledge of color relationships and potential color research directions
Turbulent Luminance in Impassioned van Gogh Paintings

Abstract:We show that the patterns of luminance in some impassioned van Gogh paintings display the mathematical structure of fluid turbulence. Specifically, we show that the probability distribution function (PDF) of luminance fluctuations of points (pixels) separated by a distance R compares notably well with the PDF of the velocity differences in a turbulent flow, as predicted by the statistical theory of A.N. Kolmogorov. We observe that turbulent paintings of van Gogh belong to his last period, during which episodes of prolonged psychotic agitation of this artist were frequent. Our approach suggests new tools that open the possibility of quantitative objective research for art representation.

Abstract:A painting consists of objects which are arranged in specific ways. The art of painting is drawing the objects, which can be considered as known trends, in an expressive manner. Detrended methods are suitable for characterizing the artistic works of the painter by eliminating trends. It means that we study the paintings, regardless of its apparent purpose, as a stochastic process. We apply multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis to characterize the statistical properties of Mona Lisa, as an instance, to exhibit the fractality of the painting. Our results show that Mona Lisa is long range correlated and almost behaves similar in various scales.

Universal Scale Laws for Colors and Patterns in Imagery

Abstract:Distribution of colors and patterns in images is observed through cascades that adjust spatial resolution and dynamics. Cascades of colors reveal the emergent universal property that Fully Colored Images (FCIs) of natural scenes adhere to the debated continuous linear log-scale law (slope $-2.00 \pm 0.01$) (L1). Cascades of discrete $2 \times 2$ patterns are derived from pixel squares reductions onto the seven unlabeled rotation-free textures (0000, 0001, 0011, 0012, 0101, 0102, 0123). They exhibit an unparalleled universal entropy maximum of $1.74 \pm 0.013$ at some dynamics regardless of spatial scale (L2). Patterns also adhere to the Integral Fluctuation Theorem ($1.00 \pm 0.01$) (L3), pivotal in studies of chaotic systems. Images with fewer colors exhibit quadratic shift and bias from L1 and L3 but adhere to L2. Randomized Hilbert fractals FCIs better match the laws than basic-to-AI-based simulations. Those results are of interest in Neural Networks, out of equilibrium physics and spectral imagery.

Efficient quantization of painting images by relevant colors

Abstract:Realistic images often contain complex variations in color, which can make economical descriptions difficult. Yet human observers can readily reduce the number of colors in paintings to a small proportion they judge as relevant. These relevant colors provide a way to simplify images by effectively quantizing them. The aim here was to estimate the information captured by this process and to compare it with algorithmic estimates of the maximum information possible by colorimetric and general optimization methods. The images tested were of 20 conventionally representational paintings. Information was quantified by Shannon's mutual information. It was found that the estimated mutual information in observers' choices reached about 90% of the algorithmic maxima. For comparison, JPEG compression delivered somewhat less. Observers seem to be efficient at effectively quantizing colored images, an ability that may have applications in the real world.

Abstract:Color has been a defining feature of paintings throughout art history. Despite the great diversity in the use of color between epochs, there are some surprisingly stable and unifying features in chromatic properties across visual artworks. For example, artists' palettes seem to be biased toward the yellow-red range of the spectrum. Here, we assess the impact of a holistic color manipulation (i.e., rotating the color gamut) on aesthetic liking and perceived colorfulness of abstract paintings. We presented 6 versions each of 100 abstract artworks that differed only in the rotational degree of their color gamut within the <em>CIELAB</em> space. Results indicated a very stable preference for the original color compositions—both on a participant level and on an item level. Furthermore, participants perceived original color compositions as more colorful than rotated versions. This effect remained robust even when the exact number of different colors—among other chromatic features—was taken into account in covariate analyses. Thus, it seems that original color compositions are inherently special. Specifically, it seems that the aesthetic appeal of original artworks arises from nontrivial color features, which are characterized by their distribution within the visible spectrum. We assume that the rotation manipulation may change the perception of some colors more strongly than others due to differences in sensitivity of our visual system to these hues. We discuss these findings with respect to category-specific color perception, which may be a potential contender for a neurobiological foundation of the observed effects. Abstract:The similarity in fractal dimensions of paint ``blobs'' in samples of gestural expressionist art implies that these pigment structures are statistically indistinguishable from one another. This result suggests that such dimensions cannot be used as a ``fingerprint'' for identifying the work of a single artist. To overcome this limitation, the multifractal spectrum is adopted as an alternative tool for artwork analysis. For the pigment blobs, it is demonstrated that this spectrum can be used to isolate a construction paradigm or art style. Additionally, the fractal dimensions of edge structures created by luminance gradients on the canvas are analyzed, yielding a potential method for visual discrimination of fractally-similar paintings.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss possible color palletes, prediction and analysis of originality of the colors that Artists used on the Renaissance oil paintings. This framework goal is to help to use the color symbology and image enhancement tools, to predict the historical color palletes of the Renaissance oil artworks. This work is only the start of a development to explore the possibilities of prediction of color palletes of the Renaissance oil artworks. We believe that framework might be very useful in the prediction of color palletes of the Renaissance oil artworks and other artworks. The images in number 105 have been taken from the paintings of three well-known artists, Rafael, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Rembrandt that are available in the Olga's Gallery. Images are processed in the frequency domain to enhance a quality of images and ratios of primary colors are calculated and analyzed by using new measurements of color-ratios.

Mixing Paint: An analysis of color value transformations in multiple coordinate spaces using multivariate linear regression

Abstract:I explore the mathematical transformation that occurs in color coordinate space when physically mixing paints of two different colors. I tested 120 pairs of 16 paint colors and used a linear regression to find the most accurate combination of input parameters, both in RGB space and several other color spaces. I found that the fit with the strongest coefficient of determination was a geometrically symmetrized linear combination of the colors in CIEXYZ space, while this same mapping in RGB space returns a better mean squared error.

Previous work showed that variations in microsaccadic rates underlie the perceptual vanishing and intensification of simple stimuli, such as Gabor patches. Here, we demonstrate that microsaccade dynamics also contribute to Troxler fading and intensification during the viewing of representational art. Participants fixated a small spot while viewing either a Gabor patch on a blank background, or Monet's painting "Impression, Sunrise." They continuously reported, via button press/release, whether the Gabor patch, or the sun in Monet's painting, was fading versus intensifying, while their eye movements were recorded with high precision. Microsaccade rates peaked before reports of increased visibility, and dropped before reports of decreased visibility or fading, both when viewing Gabor patches and Monet's sun. These results reveal that the relationship between microsaccade production and the reversal and prevention of Troxler fading applies not only to the viewing of contrived stimuli, but also to the observation of "Impression, Sunrise." Whether or not perceptual fading was consciously intended by Monet, our findings indicate that observers' oculomotor dynamics are a contributor to the cornerstone of Impressionism.

Visual performance of painting colors based on psychological factors

Abstract:Humans have been exploring colors since ancient times, but relatively complete color systems appeared one after another in the twentieth century. Even without language and other information exchanges, colors can still convey information and stimulate emotions. Therefore, color can have both physical and psychological effects on people. In this context, this paper studies the visual representation of painting colors based on psychological factors. The article studies the theory of personality traits and introduces the related content of visual psychology. To explore the relationship between each variable and color psychology and the visual representation of painting colors, a binary logistic regression analysis is performed. The colors in the post-impressionist paintings of Van Gogh and Gauguin is contrasted, and experiments on psychological factors and color research is conducted. The factors that affect the color tone of the picture and the influence of psychological factors on the judgment of color brightness are investigated. Finally, the correlation analysis of personality trait dimension and irrational behavior is carried out. The experimental results of the article show that after the analysis of variance, the significance levels of regression model 1 and model 2 both reach 0.000, and the adjusted R squares are 0.319 and 0.356, respectively. In this study, regression model 2 was selected as the final model. According to Model 2, the standardized regression coefficients of agreeableness and neuroticism are 0.438 and -0.251, respectively, and the significance of the regression coefficients are 0.000 and 0.021, respectively. The research on the visual performance of painting colors based on psychological factors has been well completed.

Abstract:Aesthetic judgements are partly predicted by image statistics, although the extent to which they are calibrated to the statistics of real-world scenes and the 'visual diet' of daily life is unclear. Here, we investigated the extent to which the beauty ratings of Western oil paintings from the JenAesthetics dataset can be accounted for by real-world scene statistics. We computed spatial and chromatic image statistics for the paintings and a set of real-world scenes captured by a head-mounted camera as participants went about daily lives. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) indicated that 6–15% of the variance in beauty ratings of the art can be accounted for by the art's image statistics. The luminance contrast of paintings made an important contribution to the PLSR models: paintings were perceived as more beautiful the greater the variation in luminance. PLSR models which expressed the art's image statistics relative to real-world scene statistics explained a similar amount of variance to models using the art's image statistics. The importance of an image statistic to perceived beauty was not related to how closely art reproduces the value from the real world. The findings suggest that beauty judgements of art are not strongly calibrated to the scene statistics of the real world.

Statistical Image Properties in Large Subsets of Traditional Art, Bad Art, and Abstract Art

Abstract:Several statistical image properties have been associated with large subsets of traditional visual artworks. Here, we investigate some of these properties in three categories of art that differ in artistic claim and prestige: (1) Traditional art of different cultural origin from established museums and art collections (oil paintings and graphic art of Western provenance, Islamic book illustration and Chinese paintings), (2) Bad Art from two museums that collect contemporary artworks of lesser importance (© Museum Of Bad Art [MOBA], Somerville, and Official Bad Art Museum of Art [OBAMA], Seattle), and (3) twentieth century abstract art of Western provenance from two prestigious museums (Tate Gallery and Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen). We measured the following four statistical image properties: the fractal dimension (a measure relating to subjective complexity); self-similarity (a measure of how much the sections of an image resemble the image as a whole), 1st-order entropy of edge orientations (a measure of how uniformly different orientations are represented in an image); and 2nd-order entropy of edge orientations (a measure of how independent edge orientations are across an image). As shown previously, traditional artworks of different styles share similar values for these measures. The values for Bad Art and twentieth century abstract art show a considerable overlap with those of traditional art, but we also identified numerous examples of Bad Art and abstract art that deviate from traditional art. By measuring statistical image properties, we quantify such differences in image composition for the first time.
Computational Modeling Of Artistic Intention: Quantify Lighting Surprise For Painting Analysis

Abstract:The use of strong lighting contrast to accentuate objects and figures in a painting-called Chiaroscuro-is popular among Renaissance painters such as Caravaggio, La Tour and Rembrandt. In this paper, we propose a new metric called LuCo to quantify the extent to which Chiaroscuro is employed by an artist in a painting. This measurement could be used to assess the capability of any system to fulfill the original artistic intention and consequently ensure minimal disruptions of Quality of Experience. We first argue that Chiaroscuro is a device for artists to draw attention to specific spatial regions; thus it can be understood as a restricted notion of visual saliency computed using only luminance features. Operationally, using a set of local luminance patches we first compute a Bayesian surprise value, where the prior and posterior probabilities are computed assuming a Gaussian Markov Random Field (GMRF) model. Inverse covariance matrices of the GMRF model are estimated via sparse graph learning for robustness. We construct a histogram using the computed surprise values from different local patches in a painting. Finally, we compute a skewness parameter for the constructed histogram as our LuCo score: large skewness means luminance surprises are either very small or very large, meaning that the artist accentuated lighting contrast in the painting. Experimental results show that paintings by Chiaroscuro artists have higher LuCo scores than 19th century French Impressionists, and Rembrandt's self-portraits have increasingly higher LuCo scores as he aged except for his late period-both trends are in agreement with art historians' interpretations.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze a sample of clippings from paintings by the lateartist Bob Ross.Previous work focused on the qualitative themes of his paintings (Hickey,2014); here, we expand on that line of research by considering thecolorspace and luminosity values as our data. Our results demonstrate thesubtle aesthetics of the average Ross painting, the common variation sharedby his paintings, and the structure of the relationships between eachpainting in our sample. We reveal, for the first time, renderings of theaverage paintings and introduce “eigenross” components to identify andevaluate shared variance. Additionally, all data and code are embedded inthis document to encourage future research, and, in the spirit of Bob Ross,to teach others how to do so.

Abstract:Mathematical morphology is a part of image processing that uses a window that moves across the image to change certain pixels according to certain operations. The concepts of supremum and infimum play a crucial role here, but it proves challenging to define them generally for higher-dimensional data, such as colour representations. Numerous approaches have therefore been taken to solve this problem with certain compromises. In this paper we will analyse the construction of a new approach, which we have already presented experimentally in paper [Kahra, M., Breuß, M., Kleefeld, A., Welk, M., DGMM 2024, pp. 325-337]. This is based on a method by Burgeth and Kleefeld [Burgeth, B., Kleefeld, A., ISMM 2013, pp. 243-254], who regard the colours as symmetric $2\times2$ matrices and compare them by means of the Loewner order in a bi-cone through different suprema. However, we will replace the supremum with the LogExp approximation for the maximum instead. This allows us to transfer the associativity of the dilation from the one-dimensional case to the higher-dimensional case. In addition, we will investigate the minimality property and specify a relaxation to ensure that our approach is continuously dependent on the input data.

Statistical fluctuations of correlators in the Color Glass Condensate

Abstract:In the McLerran-Venugopalan model, correlators of Wilson lines are given by an average over a Gaussian ensemble of random color sources. In numerical implementations, these averages are approximated by a Monte-Carlo sampling. In this paper, we study the statistical error made with such a sampling, with emphasis on the momentum dependence of this error. Using the example of the dipole amplitude, we consider various approximants that are all equivalent in the limit of infinite statistics but differ with finite statistics and compare their statistical errors. For correlation functions that are translation invariant, we show that averaging over the barycenter coordinate drastically reduces the statistical error and more importantly modifies its momentum dependence.

Abstract:Art is the ultimate expression of human creativity that is deeply influenced by the philosophy and culture of the corresponding historical epoch. The quantitative analysis of art is therefore essential for better understanding human cultural evolution. Here we present a large-scale quantitative analysis of almost 140 thousand paintings, spanning nearly a millennium of art history. Based on the local spatial patterns in the images of these paintings, we estimate the permutation entropy and the statistical complexity of each painting. These measures map the degree of visual order of artworks into a scale of order-disorder and simplicity-complexity that locally reflects qualitative categories proposed by art historians. The dynamical behavior of these measures reveals a clear temporal evolution of art, marked by transitions that agree with the main historical periods of art. Our research shows that different artistic styles have a distinct average degree of entropy and complexity, thus allowing a hierarchical organization and clustering of styles according to these metrics. We have further verified that the identified groups correspond well with the textual content used to qualitatively describe the styles, and that the employed complexity-entropy measures can be used for an effective classification of artworks.

Abstract:Lighting design for art exhibitions has a significant impact on the enjoyment and understanding of the displayed artworks. In particular, the selection of the light sources and the design of the museum space affect the visitors’ visual perceptions of the artworks and their color appearance. This project investigated some of the potential factors—the correlated color temperature (CCT) of the illumination, the overall color content of the painting and the lightness of its background—affecting a painting’s color appearance and appreciation in a museum setting. The study involved a survey conducted in the laboratory with both naïve observers and lighting experts. The CCT of the lighting was found to be the main factor affecting the painting’s appearance and the observers’ overall preference for the lighting arrangements, whereas the overall hue content of the painting and the background lightness had a minor influence. Furthermore, it has been found that the perceived brightness increases along with the CCT.
