Abstract:The interaction of a gravitational wave (GW) with an elastic body is usually described in terms of a GW "force" driving the oscillations of the body's normal modes. However, this description is only possible for GW frequencies for which the response of the elastic body is dominated by a few normal modes. At higher frequencies the normal modes blend into a quasi-continuum and a field-theoretical description, as pioneered by Dyson already in 1969, becomes necessary. However, since the metric perturbation $h_{\mu\nu}$ is an intrinsically relativistic object, a consistent coupling to GWs can only be obtained within a relativistic (and, in fact generally covariant) theory of elasticity. We develop such a formalism using the methods of modern effective field theories, and we use it to provide a derivation of the interaction of elastic bodies with GWs valid also in the high-frequency regime, providing a first-principle derivation of Dyson's result (and partially correcting it). We also stress that the field-theoretical results are obtained working in the TT frame, while the description in terms of a force driving the normal modes is only valid in the proper detector frame. We show how to transform the results between the two frames. Beside an intrinsic conceptual interest, these results are relevant to the computation of the sensitivity of the recently proposed Lunar Gravitational Wave Antenna.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics D, Ahead of Print. It is well known that gravitational waves (GWs) undergo no absorption or dissipation when traversing through a perfect fluid. However, in the presence of a viscous fluid, GWs transfer energy to the fluid medium. In this paper, we present a review of our recent series of results regarding the interaction between GWs and surrounding matter. Additionally, we examine the impact of a viscous fluid shell on GW propagation, focusing particularly on GW damping and GW heating. Furthermore, we explore the significance of these effects in various astrophysical scenarios such as core-collapse supernovae and primordial GWs.

Abstract:Laser-interferometric gravitational wave detectors are commonly modeled as being at rest in transverse-traceless coordinates (and thus geodesic). In this paper, we analyze what happens if the interferometer is mounted on a material that can undergo elastic oscillations caused by the gravitational wave. We thus compute the response of a two-dimensional elastic material to linearized gravitational radiation and compute the resulting response of a laser interferometer, mounted on such a plate.

Abstract:The existence of large--scale magnetic fields in the universe has led to the observation that if gravitational waves propagating in a cosmological environment encounter even a small magnetic field then electromagnetic radiation is produced. To study this phenomenon in more detail we take it out of the cosmological context and at the same time simplify the gravitational radiation to impulsive waves. Specifically, to illustrate our findings, we describe the following three physical situations: (1) a cylindrical impulsive gravitational wave propagating into a universe with a magnetic field, (2) an axially symmetric impulsive gravitational wave propagating into a universe with an electric field and (3) a `spherical' impulsive gravitational wave propagating into a universe with a small magnetic field. In cases (1) and (3) electromagnetic radiation is produced behind the gravitational wave. In case (2) no electromagnetic radiation appears after the wave unless a current is established behind the wave breaking the Maxwell vacuum. In all three cases the presence of the magnetic or electric fields results in a modification of the amplitude of the incoming gravitational wave which is explicitly calculated using the Einstein--Maxwell vacuum field equations.
The interaction between gravitational waves and a viscous fluid shell on a Schwarzschild background

Abstract:Previous work has shown that the interaction between gravitational waves (GWs) and a shell of viscous matter leads to damping of the GWs and heating of the matter, and that these effects may be astrophysically significant. This result was derived using the theory of linear perturbations about a Minkowki background, and in this work the model is extended to be more physically realistic by allowing the background geometry to be Schwarzschild. It is found that the difference between using a Schwarzschild or Minkowski background is minimal when either $r\gg M$ or $\lambda< M$, where $r$ is the radius of the shell, $\lambda$ is the GW wavelength and $M$ is the mass of the system in geometric units (so that $1M_\odot=1.48$km). However, when $r\sim 6M$ and $\lambda\sim 25M$, then the damping and heating effects are about 9 times larger on a Schwarzschild background than on Minkowski, and such situations occur astrophysically.

Abstract:This paper explores the interaction of weak gravitational fields with slender elastic materials in space and estimates their sensitivities for the detection of gravitational waves with frequencies between $10^{-4}$ and 1 Hz. The dynamic behaviour of such slender structures is ideally suited to analysis by the simple theory of Cosserat rods. Such a description offers a clean conceptual separation of the vibrations induced by bending, shear, twist and extension and the response to gravitational tidal accelerations can be reliably estimated in terms of the constitutive properties of the structure. The sensitivity estimates are based on a truncation of the theory in the presence of thermally induced homogeneous Gaussian stochastic forces.

Acoustic wake in an isothermal profile: dynamical friction and gravitational wave emission

Abstract:We consider the motion of a circularly-moving perturber in a self-gravitating, collisional system with spherically symmetric density profile. We concentrate on the singular isothermal sphere which, despite its pathological features, admits a simple polarization function in linear response theory. This allows us to solve for the acoustic wake trailing the perturber and the resulting dynamical friction, in the limit where the self-gravity of the response can be ignored. In steady-state and for subsonic velocities $v_p<c_s$, the dynamical friction torque $F_\varphi\propto v_p^3$ is suppressed for perturbers orbiting in an isothermal sphere relative to the infinite, homogeneous medium expectation $F_\varphi\propto v_p$. For highly supersonic motions, both expectations agree and are consistent with a local approximation to the gravitational torque. At fixed resolution (a given Coulomb logarithm), the response of the system is maximal for Mach numbers near the constant circular velocity of the singular isothermal profile. This resonance maximizes the gravitational wave (GW) emission produced by the trailing acoustic wake. For an inspiral around a massive black hole of mass $10^6 M_\odot$ located at the center of a (truncated) isothermal sphere, this GW signal could be comparable to the vacuum GW emission of the black hole binary at sub-nanohertz frequencies when the small black hole enters the Bondi sphere of the massive one. The exact magnitude of this effect depends on departures from hydrostatic equilibrium and on the viscosity present in any realistic astrophysical fluid, which are not included in our simplified description.

The electromagnetic and gravitational are cousin theories in which the corresponding waves play a relevant role to understand several related physical aspects. It has been established that small electromagnetic waves can generate gravitational waves and vice versa when scattered by a charged black hole. In the realm of cylindrical spacetimes, we present here a simple nonlinear effect of the conversion of electromagnetic to gravitational waves reflected by the amount of mass extracted from them.

Abstract:We focus on the interaction of a plane gravitational wave with electromagnetic fields and we describe this interaction in the proper detector frame where, thanks to the introduction of Fermi coordinates, it is possible to refer to directly measurable quantities. The presence of a gravitational field can be addressed in terms of an effective electromagnetic medium and, within this framework, we show that the coupling of pre-existing electromagnetic fields with the gravitational field of the wave gives rise to new effective currents. To assess the impact of these effects, we solve Maxwell's equations for some standard configurations of the electric and magnetic fields.

Elementary considerations on gravitational waves from hyperbolic encounters

Abstract:We examine the main properties of gravitational waves (GWs) emitted by transient hyperbolic encounters of black holes. We begin by building the set of basic variables most relevant to setting our problem. After exposing the ranges of masses and eccentricities accessible at a given GW frequency, we analyze the dependence of the gravitational strain on those parameters and determine the trajectories resulting in the most sizeable strains. Some non-trivial behaviors are unveiled, showing that highly eccentric events can be more easily detectable than parabolic ones. In particular, we underline the correct way to extend formulas from hyperbolic to parabolic orbits. Our reasonings are as general as possible, and we make a point of explaining our considerations pedagogically. The majority of the work is based on Newtonian dynamics and aims at being a benchmark to which more accurate calculations can be compared.

Elastic rods and elastic spinning rings as gravitational wave detectors

Abstract:Linearised relativistic elasticity equations of motion are considered for a rod and a spinning ring encountering a gravitational wave. In the case of the rod, the equations reduce to a wave equation with appropriate boundary conditions. Using Fourier transforms, the resonant frequencies are found and an explicit distributional solution is given, both for a plus- and a cross-polarised gravitational wave. In the case of the spinning ring, the equations are coupled wave equations with periodic boundary conditions. Using a Fourier series expansion, the system of wave equations is recast as a family of ordinary differential equations for the Fourier coefficients, which are then solved via Fourier transforms. The resonant frequencies are found, including simple approximate expressions for slowly rotating rings, and an explicit distributional solution is obtained in the case of the non-spinning ring. Interestingly, it is possible to tune the resonant frequencies by adjusting the angular velocity of the spinning ring.

Abstract:We consider some specific models of non-minimal matter-geometry coupling theories and investigate the propagation of the gravitational waves in them. Extracting the temporal evolution of the gravitational wave equation within the framework of a flat FRW universe with a perfect fluid distribution, we analyze the waveforms traveling during the time. We find that while both the amplitude and frequency of the GWs decay with time in all considered models, the rate of reduction is highly sensitive to the values of the equation of state parameter and input parameters of the considered models.

Abstract:It is easy to reason that gravity might be the effect of a fluid in disguise, as it will naturally arise in emergent gravity models where gravity is due to the effect of some fundamental particles, with the latter expected to behave collectively like a fluid at the macroscopic scale. We call this the fluid/gravity equivalence. The key difficulty with the fluid/gravity equivalence is to find the correct metric-fluid relation (the relation between the emergent metric and the fluid properties) so that the fluid not only has physically acceptable properties but also obeys the usual hydrodynamic equations, while at the same time the emergent metric also obeys the Einstein equations. Faced with the problem, we have previously made a tentative proposal of the metric-fluid relation, focusing only on obtaining physically acceptable predictions on the fluid properties. In this paper, however, we find that for the general gravitational wave spacetime near the null infinity, the underlying fluid not only has physically acceptable properties, but also satisfies the expected relativistic hydrodynamic equations in the Minkowski background, thus providing a concrete example satisfying both of the major requirements expected for the fluid/gravity equivalence.

Abstract:We study the interaction among gravitational and electromagnetic plane waves by means of an analogue electromagnetic model of gravity, where the gravitational properties are encoded in the electromagnetic properties of a material in flat space-time. In this setup, the variations in the metric tensor produced by the gravitational waves are codified as space-time-varying electromagnetic properties. We used an in-housed code based in the finite-difference time domain method to conduct numerical experiments, where we found that, when a monochromatic gravitational plane wave interacts with a narrow-band electromagnetic plane wave, an infinite number of sidebands, equally separated between themselves, are induced by the gravitational wave. Finally, we discuss possible future applications of this effect as an alternative method to directly detect gravitational waves.

Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">We discuss an approach to gravitational waves based on Geometric Algebra and Gauge Theory Gravity. After a brief introduction to Geometric Algebra (GA), we consider Gauge Theory Gravity, which uses symmetries expressed within the GA of flat spacetime to derive gravitational forces as the gauge forces corresponding to making these symmetries local. We then consider solutions for black holes and plane gravitational waves in this approach, noting the simplicity that GA affords in both writing the solutions, and checking some of their properties. We then go on to show that a preferred gauge emerges for gravitational plane waves, in which a 'memory effect' corresponding to non-zero velocities left after the passage of the waves becomes clear, and the physical nature of this effect is demonstrated. In a final section we present the mathematical details of the gravitational wave treatment in GA, and link it with other approaches to exact waves in the literature. Even for those not reaching it via Geometric Algebra, we recommend that the general relativity metric-based version of the preferred gauge, the <em class="a-plus-plus">Brinkmann metric</em>, be considered for use more widely by astrophysicists and others for the study of gravitational plane waves. These advantages are shown to extend to a treatment of joint gravitational and electromagnetic plane waves, and in a final subsection, we use the exact solutions found for particle motion in exact impulsive gravitational waves to discuss whether backward in time motion can be induced by strongly non-linear waves.</p>

Abstract:The paper studies the interaction of a longitudinal wave with transverse waves in general isotropic and unconstrained hyperelastic materials, including the possibility of dissipation. The dissipative term chosen is similar to the classical stress tensor describing a Stokesian fluid and is commonly used in nonlinear acoustics. The aim of this research is to derive the corresponding general equations of motion, valid for any possible form of the strain energy function and to investigate the possibility of obtaining some general and exact solutions to these equations by reducing them to a set of ordinary differential equations. Then the reductions can lead to some exact closed-form solutions for special classes of materials (here the examples of the Hadamard, Blatz-Ko, and power-law strain energy densities are considered, as well as fourth-order elasticity). The solutions derived are in a time/space separable form and may be interpreted as generalized oscillatory shearing motions and generalized sinusoidal standing waves. By means of standard methods of dynamical systems theory, some peculiar properties of waves propagating in compressible materials are uncovered, such as for example, the emergence of destabilizing effects. These latter features exist for highly nonlinear strain energy functions such as the relatively simple power-law strain energy, but they cannot exist in the framework of fourth-order elasticity.
