Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin–Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.
Index theorem for homogenous spaces of Lie groups

Abstract:We study index theory on homogeneous spaces associated to an almost connected Lie group in terms of the topological aspect and the analytic aspect. On the topological aspect, we obtain a topological formula as a result of the Riemann-Roch formula for proper cocompact actions of the Lie group, inspired by the work of Paradan and Vergne. On the analytic aspect, we apply heat kernel methods to obtain a local index formula representing the higher indices of equivariant elliptic operators with respect to a proper cocompact actions of the Lie group.

Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:We study K-theory classes of Hamiltonian loop group spaces represented by admissible Fredholm complexes. We prove various equivariant index formulae in this context. In a sequel to this article we show that, when specialized to a family of non-local elliptic boundary value problems over the moduli space of framed flat connections on a surface, one obtains a gauge theory analogue of the Teleman–Woodward index formula.

Renormalized Index Formulas for Elliptic Differential Operators on Boundary Groupoids

Abstract:We consider the index problem of certain boundary groupoids of the form $\mathcal{G} = M _0 \times M _0 \cup \mathbb{R}^q \times M _1 \times M _1$. Since it has been shown that for the case that $q \geq 3$ is odd, $K _0 (C^* (\mathcal{G})) \cong \bbZ $, and moreover the $K$-theoretic index coincides with the Fredholm index, we attempt in this paper to derive a numerical formula for elliptic differential operators on $\mathcal{G}$. Our approach is similar to that of renormalized trace of Moroianu and Nistor \cite{Nistor;Hom2}. However, we find that when $q \geq 3$, the eta term vanishes, and hence the $K$-theoretic and Fredholm indices of elliptic (respectively fully elliptic) pseudo-differential operators on these groupoids are given only by the Atiyah-Singer term. As for the $q=1$ case we find that the result depends on how the singularity set $M_1$ lies in $M$.

Abstract:In this paper, we define a relative equivariant coarse index for proper actions and a relative L-2-index. We derive a relative equivariant coarse index theorem connecting the relative equivariant coarse index with the localized equivariant coarse index. Furthermore, we present a calculation formula on the relative L-2-index and provide a relative L-2-index theorem. Our work is an expansion of the relative index theory which reflects the difference between two manifolds.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete finitely generated group. Let $\hat{M}\to T$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant fibration, with fibers diffeomorphic to a fixed even dimensional manifold with boundary $Z$. We assume that $\Gamma\to \hat{M}\to \hat{M}/\Gamma$ is a Galois covering of a compact manifold with boundary. Let $(D^+ (\theta))_{\theta\in T}$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant family of Dirac-type operators. Under the assumption that the boundary family is $L^2$-invertible, we define an index class in the K-theory of the cross-product algebra, $K_0 (C^0 (T)\rtimes_r \Gamma)$. If, in addition, $\Gamma$ is of polynomial growth, we define higher indeces by pairing the index class with suitable cyclic cocycles. Our main result is then a formula for these higher indeces: the structure of the formula is as in the seminal work of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer, with an interior geometric contribution and a boundary contribution in the form of a higher eta invariant associated to the boundary family. Under similar assumptions we extend our theorem to any $G$-proper manifold, with $G$ an étale groupoid. We employ this generalization in order to establish a higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index formula on certain foliations with boundary. Fundamental to our work is a suitable generalization of Melrose $b$-pseudodifferential calculus as well as the superconnection proof of the index theorem on $G$-proper manifolds recently given by Gorokhovsky and Lott.

Abstract:Given an action of a discrete group on a closed smooth manifold, we consider the class of nonlocal elliptic operators generated by pseudodifferential operators on the manifold and shift operators. The operators in this class are Fredholm under suitable ellipticity conditions. In the present paper, we give an index formula for these operators for the case of the group , where is an arbitrary finite group. To solve this index problem, we explicitly write the contribution to the index by the fixed points of finite-order elements of the group. The index formula is stated in terms of characteristic classes in periodic cyclic cohomology.

Abstract:We compute explicitly the K-groups of some boundary groupoid C*-algebras with exponential isotropy subgroups. Then we derive index formulas that computes the K-theoretic and Fredholm indexes of elliptic (respectively totally elliptic) pseudo-differential operators on these groupoids.

Abstract:Boundary groupoids were introduced by the second author, which can be used to model many analysis problems on singular spaces. In order to investigate index theory on boundary groupoids, we introduce the notion of {\em a deformation from the pair groupoid}.Under the assumption that a deformation from the pair groupoid $M \times M$ exists for Lie groupoid $\mathcal{G}\rightrightarrows M$, we construct explicitly a deformation index map relating the analytic index on $\mathcal{G}$ and the index on the pair groupoid. We apply this map to boundary groupoids of the form $\mathcal{G} = M_0 \times M_0 \sqcup G \times M_1 \times M_1 \rightrightarrows M=M_0\sqcup M_1$, where $G$ is an exponential Lie group, to obtain index formulae for (fully) elliptic (pseudo)-differential operators on $\mathcal{G}$, with the aid of the index formula by M. J. Pflaum, H. Posthuma, and X. Tang. These results recover and generalize our previous results for renormalizable boundary groupoids via the method of renormalized trace.

Abstract:In the first part of this series, we defined an equivariant index without assuming the group acting or the orbit space of the action to be compact. This allowed us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In this paper, we investigate properties and applications of this index. We prove that it has an induction property that can be used to deduce various other properties of the index. In the case of compact orbit spaces, we show how it is related to the analytic assembly map from the Baum-Connes conjecture, and an index used by Mathai and Zhang. We use the index to define a notion of K-homological Dirac induction, and show that, under conditions, it satisfies the quantisation commutes with reduction principle.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, linear real reductive group. We give sufficient conditions ensuring the well-definedness of the delocalized eta invariant $\eta_g (D_X)$ associated to a Dirac operator $D_X$ on a cocompact $G$-proper manifold $X$ and to the orbital integral $\tau_g$ defined by a semisimple element $g\in G$. Along the way, we give a detailed account of the large time behaviour of the heat kernel and of its short time bahaviour near the fixed point set of $g$. We prove that such a delocalized eta invariant enters as the boundary correction term in an index theorem computing the pairing between the index class and the 0-degree cyclic cocycle defined by $\tau_g$ on a $G$-proper manifold with boundary. More importantly, we also prove a higher version of such a theorem, for the pairing of the index class and the higher cyclic cocycles defined by the higher orbital integral $\Phi^P_g$ associated to a cuspidal parabolic subgroup $P<G$ with Langlands decomposition $P=MAN$ and a semisimple element $g\in M$. We employ these results in order to define (higher) rho numbers associated to $G$-invariant positive scalar curvature metrics.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the index theory of orbital and transverse elliptic operators on manifolds with a proper Lie group action. It corrects errors of my previous paper (published in JNCG in 2016) on transverse operators and contains new results. The two index theories, orbital and transverse, are very much intertwined and interdependent, and are treated together. The theory of orbital operators is developed from the basic definitions to the final index theorem. The KK-theoretic proofs of index theorems for elliptic, t-elliptic and orbital elliptic operators are given in sections 9, 10, 11. Throughout the paper, we use a simpler method in constructing pseudo-differential operators.

Index theory of hypoelliptic operators on Carnot manifolds

Abstract:We study the index theory of hypoelliptic operators on Carnot manifolds -- manifolds whose Lie algebra of vector fields is equipped with a filtration induced from sub-bundles of the tangent bundle. A Heisenberg pseudodifferential operator, elliptic in the calculus of van Erp-Yuncken, is hypoelliptic and Fredholm. Under some geometric conditions, we compute its Fredholm index by means of operator $K$-theory. These results extend the work of Baum-van Erp (Acta Mathematica '2014) for co-oriented contact manifolds to a methodology for solving this index problem geometrically on Carnot manifolds. Under the assumption that the Carnot manifold is regular, i.e. has isomorphic osculating Lie algebras in all fibres, and admits a flat coadjoint orbit, the methodology derived from Baum-van Erp's work is developed in full detail. In this case, we develope $K$-theoretical dualities computing the Fredholm index by means of geometric $K$-homology a la Baum-Douglas. The duality involves a Hilbert space bundle of flat orbit representations. Explicit solutions to the index problem for Toeplitz operators and operators of the form "$\Delta_H+\gamma T$" are computed in geometric $K$-homology, extending results of Boutet de Monvel and Baum-van Erp, respectively, from co-oriented contact manifolds to regular polycontact manifolds.

Abstract:We investigate elliptic operators with a symmetry that forces their index to vanish. We study the secondary index, defined modulo 2. We examine Callias-type operators with this symmetry on non-compact manifolds and establish mod 2 versions of the Gromov-Lawson relative index theorem, the Callias index theorem, and the Boutet de Monvel's index theorem for Toeplitz operators.

Abstract:Let G be a connected, linear real reductive group and let X be a G-proper manifold without boundary. We give a detailed account of both the large and small time behaviour of the heat-kernel of perturbed Dirac operators, as a map from the positive real line to the Lafforgue algebra. As a first application, we prove that certain delocalized eta invariants associated to perturbed Dirac operators are well defined. We then prove index formulas relating these delocalized eta invariants to Atiyah-Patodi-Singer delocalized indices on G-proper manifolds with boundary. We apply these results to the definition of rho-numbers associated to G-homotopy equivalences between closed G-proper manifolds and to the study of their bordism properties.
