Abstract:This paper considers an online hierarchical scheduling problem on parallel identical machines. We are given a set of m machines and a sequence of jobs. Each machine has a different hierarchy, and each job also has a hierarchy associated with it. A job can be assigned to a machine only if its hierarchy is no less than that of the machine. The objective is to minimize the makespan, i.e., the maximum load of all machines. Two models are studied in the paper. For the fractional model, we present an improved algorithm and lower bounds. Both the algorithm and the lower bound are based on solutions of mathematical programming. For any given m, our algorithm is optimal by numerical calculation. For the integral model, we present both a general algorithm for any m, and an improved algorithm with better competitive ratios of 2.333 and 2.610 for m=4 and 5, respectively.

Abstract:We investigate the scheduling problem with release dates and deadlines on a minimum number of machines. In the case of equal release dates, we present a 2-approximation algorithm. We also show that Greedy Best-Fit (GBF) is a 6-approximation algorithm for the case of equal processing times.

Abstract:Speranza and Tuza [Ann. Oper. Res. 86 (1999) 494-506] studied the on-line problem of scheduling jobs on m identical machines with extendable working time. In this problem, each machine is assumed to have an identical regular working time, which can be extended if necessary. The working time of a machine is the larger one between its regular working time and the total processing time of jobs assigned to it. The objective is to minimize the total working time of machines. They presented an on-line algorithm H, with a competitive ratio at most 1.228 for any number of machines by choosing an appropriate parameter x. In this paper we consider a small number of machines. The best choices of x are given for m = 2, 3, 4 and the tight bounds, 7/6, 11/9 and 19/16, respectively, are proved. Among them, the algorithm for m = 2 is best possible. We then derive a new algorithm for m = 3 with a competitive ratio 7/6. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper presents an integrated staff-sizing system for analyzing and determining workforce management policies with consideration of staff flexibility in service organizations, which addresses and captures the integrated requirements between long-term manpower planning and short-term staff scheduling in the service sector. Multiple Objective Linear Programming (MOLP) is applied to optimize several diversified goals. Solution methods to the MOLP models for the staff planning and staff scheduling are developed respectively, then a solution approach is proposed to iteratively revise the unacceptable staff-sizing plan or scheduling plan. Finally, an example of nurse sizing is analyzed and computational studies are carried out to investigate managerial insights.
A Novel Model and Algorithm for Integrated Nurse Scheduling Considering Balanced Workload

Abstract:To utilize the limited number of nurses effectively and improve the job satisfaction of nurses, the integrated nurse scheduling problem is studied considering workload balance. A mixed integer fractional programming model is first developed to design an integrated nursing staffing, scheduling, and assignment plan for minimizing the number of employed nurses under the balanced workload of nurses and the limited working time. An Accelerated Logic Benders exact decomposition algorithm is designed to solve this model. Specifically, based on the hierarchical characteristics of the developed model, the Benders algorithm framework is utilized to decompose the original problem into one master problem and multiple sub-problems, which effectively eliminates the nonlinearity. Two acceleration strategies called ESMP enhancement strategy and Accelerated Logic Benders cut strategy, are proposed to improve the solution efficiency. The experimental results show that considering the workload balance does not incur extra labor costs and makes the workload of nurses more balanced. The ESMP enhancement strategy and the Accelerated Logic Benders decomposition algorithm are feasible and effective. Finally, some important management implications of the workload balance strategy are provided for nursing institutions. To sum up, the proposed model and algorithm provide powerful decision-supporting tools for nursing institutions to make integrated nurse scheduling decisions, which can effectively reduce their employment cost and improve the job satisfaction of nurses.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider single-machine scheduling problem in which processing time of a job is described by a convex decreasing resource consumption function. The objective is to minimize the total amount of resource consumed subject to a constraint on total weighted flow time. The optimal resource allocation is obtained for any arbitrary job sequence. The computational complexity of the general problem remains an open question, but we present and analyze some special cases that are solvable by using polynomial time algorithms. For the general problem, several dominance properties and some lower bounds are derived, which are used to speed up the elimination process of a branch-and-bound algorithm proposed to solve the problem. A heuristic algorithm is also proposed, which is shown by computational experiments to perform effectively and efficiently in obtaining near-optimal solutions. The results show that the average percentage error of the proposed heuristic algorithm from optimal solutions is less than 3%.

Abstract:This paper investigates the air traffic controller scheduling problem in which each employee must be assigned up to 10 shifts over a two-week planning horizon. Additional assignments include a 30-minute lunch break and several 15-minute rest breaks within each shift. The goal is to select the minimum number of employees that balances a weighted combination of demand undercoverage, overcoverage and labor costs. Additional constraints include the minimum/maximum number of employees, minimum shift and demand coverage, minimum number of consecutive working hours, bounds on working hours, minimum days off, maximum consecutive days on, and minimum rest time between shifts. A 2-phase algorithm is developed to efficiently construct weekly schedules for the controllers. In Phase 1, employee-shift assignments are made with a randomization algorithm and a greedy post-processor. In Phase 2, 15-minute breaks are added to the selected shifts by solving a second optimization model. The proposed methodology is tested on both small instances defined by the Federal Aviation Administration in their 2022 challenge, and large instances with up to 52 employees. Compared to the actual schedule, the results verify that the 2-phase algorithm offers significantly better schedules with respect to all metrics. We conclude with a parametric analysis of the number of employees to determine how staffing levels effect solution quality.

Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms approach to solution of the jobshop scheduling problems (JSP) is studied. Different from the existing genetic algorithm approach to JSP, the approach proposed in this paper is based upon the mixed integer model of the JSP, and casts the JSP as a mixed integer linear or nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. With genetic algorithm and evolution strategy, the procedures for solution of MINLP problems are presented respectively. Constraints of the MINLP problems are dealt with easily by using the penalty function method and the Deb approach. At the end of the paper, computer simulations for a numerical example are made, and the results show that the proposed approach is effective.

Abstract:This paper studies a two-crane scheduling problem in a port terminal. These two cranes are deployed in a block of a port terminal. They can move along a bi-directional traveling lane and must maintain a safe distance between them to avoid collision. A group of export containers in a block is required to be transported by cranes from their storage location to an access point of the block. Each container is associated with a due date. The problem is to find a schedule such that all containers are carried to the access point before their due dates. If such schedule does not exist, then the problem becomes to find schedules to minimize the maximum tardiness, the number of tardy jobs, respectively. In this paper, we first identify the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a feasible schedule, i.e., a schedule transports all containers to the access point before their due dates and does not violate the requirement to maintain a safe distance between two cranes. We prove that if there exists at least one feasible schedule, then there must be a permutation schedule with containers sequenced in earliest due date (EDD) order to be feasible. An efficient algorithm is developed to find a feasible schedule given its existence. Furthermore, we provide efficient algorithms for minimizing the maximum tardiness, the number of tardy jobs, the makespan and the total completion time, respectively.
Novel approach to intelligent scheduling based on fuzzy feature selection and fuzzy classifier

Abstract:Intelligent scheduling policy is needed for dynamic manufacturing systems, which tailors the dispatching rule adaptively depending on the prevailing state of the system. In this kind of system features-oriented intelligent scheduling method, appropriately choosing the group of system features is very critical to scheduling performance. However, research efforts on this topic are limited. In this article, based on general fuzzy model and heuristic searching tree, a new quantitative method is proposed to evaluate and reduce the system features. Then, an intelligent scheduler using fuzzy classifier is created, which can present fuzzy or uncertainty cases. The fuzzy classifier is constructed by fuzzy neural network. Tests of simulation and contrast show that, through applying fuzzy logic in intelligent scheduling framework, the learning performance of classifier and scheduling performance of scheduler are both improved. In conclusion, the fuzzy feature selection and fuzzy pattern classifier methods have great potential in improving the performance of intelligent scheduler.

Abstract:Whereas the importance of MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul/Operation) service has been emphasised in manufacturing industries, few studies have focused on service staff assignment of MRO activities in spite of its great relevance. This paper aims to propose a novel method for assigning proper staff to specific task in such activities. Business object and process models are established, while two key problems, namely skill requirement analysis for MRO service tasks and assigning service staff, are pointed out. To present MRO service skills and properties of level, skill vector is stated and used to analyse skill requirements of tasks. A three-phase approach to assign service staff is put forward, applying an improved Genetic Algorithm (GA) and specific evaluation pattern to intelligently search and rank the feasible groups of service staff. Finally, a decision support system that is implemented to validate the approach proposed ahead is introduced.
An Intelligent Model for Solving Manpower Scheduling Problems

Abstract:The manpower scheduling problem is a critical research field in the resource management area. Based on the existing studies on scheduling problem solutions, this paper transforms the manpower scheduling problem into a combinational optimization problem under multi-constraint conditions from a new perspective. It also uses logical paradigms to build a mathematical model for problem solution and an improved multi-dimensional evolution algorithm for solving the model. Moreover, the constraints discussed in this paper basically cover all the requirements of human resource coordination in modern society and are supported by our experiment results. In the discussion part, we compare our model with other heuristic algorithms or linear programming methods and prove that the model proposed in this paper makes a 25.7% increase in efficiency and a 17% increase in accuracy at most. In addition, to the numerical solution of the manpower scheduling problem, this paper also studies the algorithm for scheduling task list generation and the method of displaying scheduling results. As a result, we not only provide various modifications for the basic algorithm to solve different condition problems but also propose a new algorithm that increases at least 28.91% in time efficiency by comparing with different baseline models.

Abstract:In this paper we consider two problems regarding the scheduling of available personnel in order to perform a given quantity of work, which can be arbitrarily decomposed into a sequence of activities. We are interested in schedules which minimize the overall dissatisfaction, where each employee's dissatisfaction is modeled as a time-dependent linear function. For the two situations considered we provide a detailed mathematical analysis, as well as efficient algorithms for determining optimal schedules.

Abstract:Staff scheduling is a well-known problem in operations research and finds its application at hospitals, airports, supermarkets, and many others. Its goal is to assign shifts to staff members such that a certain objective function, e.g. revenue, is maximized. Meanwhile, various constraints of the staff members and the organization need to be satisfied. Typically in staff scheduling problems, there are hard constraints on the minimum number of employees that should be available at specific points of time. Often multiple hard constraints guaranteeing the availability of specific number of employees with different roles need to be considered. Staff scheduling for demand-responsive services, such as, e.g., ride-pooling and ride-hailing services, differs in a key way from this: There are often no hard constraints on the minimum number of employees needed at fixed points in time. Rather, the number of employees working at different points in time should vary according to the demand at those points in time. Having too few employees at a point in time results in lost revenue, while having too many employees at a point in time results in not having enough employees at other points in time, since the total personnel-hours are limited. The objective is to maximize the total reward generated over a planning horizon, given a monotonic relationship between the number of shifts active at a point in time and the instantaneous reward generated at that point in time. This key difference makes it difficult to use existing staff scheduling algorithms for planning shifts in demand-responsive services. In this article, we present a novel approach for modelling and solving staff scheduling problems for demand-responsive services that optimizes for the relevant reward function.

Abstract:Introduction The main issue related to the duty schedule is to allocate medical staff to each medical department by considering personnel skills and personal vocation preferences. However, how to effectively use staff’s multiskill characteristics and how to execute vocation control have not been well investigated. Objectives This article aims to develop duty scheduling and vacation permission decisions to minimize the sum of customers’ waiting costs, the overtime cost of medical staff, the cost of failing to meet medical staff’ vacation requirements, and the cost of mutual support between departments. Methods This study formulated the problem as a multiperiod mixed integer nonlinear programming model and developed a hybrid heuristic based on evolutionary mechanism of genetic algorithm and linear programming to efficiently solve the proposed model. Results Five types of problems were solved through Lingo optimization and the proposed approach. For small-scale problems, both methods can find the optimal solutions. For a slightly larger problem, the solutions found by the proposed approach are superior those of Lingo. Conclusion This research discusses the complex decision-making problem of on-duty arrangement and vacation control of medical staff in a multidepartmental medical center. This research formulates the medical staff’s scheduling and vacation control problems as constrained mixed integer quadratic programming problems. Computational results indicate that the proposed approach can efficiently produce compromise solutions that outperform the solutions of the Lingo optimization software.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a manpower planning problem with single employee type over a long planning horizon. The dynamic demand for manpower must be fulfilled by allocating enough number of employees and each employee has a minimal employment period. A cost objective is concerned where the costs for every employee include salary, recruitment and dismissal costs, in particular, setup cost when recruitment activity occurs in one period. In this paper we first formulate the problem as a dynamic programming model. Then we derive properties of the problem and propose an algorithm to minimize the total manpower-related cost over the entire planning horizon. Next we discuss the influence on the optimal states of changing some parameters and provide the sensitivity analysis of the optimal states concerning the future demands. Finally, we report computational results to illustrate the correctness of the approach and to analyze the influence on the optimal states of changing parameters or changing future demands.

Abstract:Employee scheduling aims to assign employees to shifts to satisfy daily workload and constraints. Some employee scheduling problems and their variants have been proven NP-hard, and a series of works have been done. However, the existing algorithms consider the fixed work time, which may cause plenty of overstaffing and understaffing phenomenons. Hence, this paper proposes a fast-flexible strategy based approach (FFS) to solve it. FFS introduces the idea of soft work time, which allows the work time of employees can be adjusted in a range. Based on this, we set the flextime strategy to decide the specific work time of each employee every day. Besides, FFS adopts a pairwise-allocated strategy and proficiency average matrix to boost its efficiency and effectiveness. Finally, the extensive experimental evaluation shows that FFS is more effective and efficient than the baselines for solving the employee scheduling problem considering soft work time.

Abstract:This paper addresses the optimization of scheduling for workers at a logistics depot using a combination of genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm. The efficient scheduling of permanent and temporary workers is crucial for optimizing the efficiency of the logistics depot while minimizing labor usage. The study begins by establishing a 0-1 integer linear programming model, with decision variables determining the scheduling of permanent and temporary workers for each time slot on a given day. The objective function aims to minimize person-days, while constraints ensure fulfillment of hourly labor requirements, limit workers to one time slot per day, cap consecutive working days for permanent workers, and maintain non-negativity and integer constraints. The model is then solved using genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. Results indicate that, for this problem, genetic algorithms outperform simulated annealing in terms of solution quality. The optimal solution reveals a minimum of 29857 person-days.

Abstract:Arrival sequencing and scheduling is an important decision problem for air traffic controller (ATC) in daily operations. ATCs must select an arrival route for each flight, trying to minimize the airborne delay and to satisfy the preference of airlines, while maintaining minimum separation between aircrafts to ensure safety. Without the aid of automation system, the optimal schedule that reduces delay cost is often not achieved because of the excessive workload on ATCs. This paper presents a real-time decision support system which provides air traffic controllers with optimized advisories on arrival sequence and schedule. Radar data, flight plan and airspace resource information are integrated to provide situation awareness. A mixed integer programming model is used to generate optimized schedule with minimal delay cost. Interactive user interface enables ATC to modify the entry fix assignment manually and compare different schedules efficiently. This system provides a foundation for computer-aided decision-making on air traffic control operations to or from the Beijing Capital International Airport. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:A given number of jobs in an open shop scheduling environment must each be processed for given amounts of time on each of a given set of machines in an arbitrary sequence. This study aims to achieve a schedule that minimizes total weighted completion time. Owing to the strong NP-hardness of the problem, the weighted shortest processing time block (WSPTB) heuristic is presented to obtain approximate solutions for large-scale problems. Performance analysis proves the asymptotic optimality of the WSPTB heuristic in the sense of probability limits. The largest weight block rule is provided to seek optimal schedules in polynomial time for a special case. A hybrid discrete differential evolution algorithm is designed to obtain high-quality solutions for moderate-scale problems. Simulation experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.
