Abstract:Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) is an effective technique for non-intrusive and on-line measurement of PAHs in sooting flames but it is still need further investigation due to the complexity of PAH fluorescence characteristics. Therefore, in-depth investigations on the fluorescence spectroscopy of PAHs with different molecular structures are relevant. In this study, we investigated the fluorescence spectrum characteristics of 13 gas-phase PAHs using LIF measurement and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculation. The experimental results showed that the fluorescence emission wavelengths increased with more aromatic (benzenoid) rings, but this relationship no longer existed when the PAH molecules contain the five-membered ring structures. The TD-DFT calculation showed that the fluorescence emission wavelength ranges of PAHs with different molecular structures were dominantly determined by the electronic structures of highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and their energy gaps. It was found that the saturated aliphatic branched chains (methyl and ethyl) only slightly influenced the LIF spectra, while the unsaturated aliphatic branched chains (ethenyl and ethynyl) caused remarkable redshifts. The TD-DFT results indicated that the aliphatic branched chains changed the electric structures of HOMO and LUMO of the core aromatic rings, and then influence the fluorescence emission wavelength ranges.

Abstract:Pyrene molecules containing NBN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been synthesized by a simple and efficient intermolecular dehydration reaction between 1-pyrenylboronic acid and aromatic diamine. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) with a five-membered NBN ring and pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) with a six-membered NBN ring show differing luminescence. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) shows concentration-dependent luminescence and enhanced emission after grinding at solid state. Pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) exhibits a turn-on type luminescence upon fluoride ion addition at lower concentration, as well as concentration-dependent stability. Further potential applications of Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) on artificial light-harvesting film were demonstrated by using commercial NiR dye as acceptor.

Abstract:Incorporating heteroatoms can effectively modulate the molecular optoelectronic properties. However, the fundamental understanding of BN doping effects in BN‐embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is underexplored, lacking rational guidelines to modulate the electronic structures through BN units for advanced materials. Herein, a concise synthesis of novel B2N2‐perylenes with BN doped at the bay area is achieved to systematically explore the doping effect of BN position on the photophysical properties of PAHs. The shift of BN position in B2N2‐perylenes alters the π electron conjugation, aromaticity and molecular rigidness significantly, achieving substantially higher electron transition abilities than those with BN doped in the nodal plane. It is further clarified that BN position dominates the photophysical properties over BN orientation. The revealed guideline here may apply generally to novel BN‐PAHs, and aid the advancement of BN‐PAHs with highly‐emissive performance.

Abstract:BN-embedded oligomers with different pairs of BN units were synthesized by electrophilic borylation. Up to four pairs of BN units were incorporated in the large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Their geometric, photophysical, electrochemical, and Lewis acidic properties were investigated by X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The B-N bonds show delocalized double-bond characteristics and the conjugation can be extended through the trans-orientated aromatic azaborine units. Calculations reveal the relatively lower aromaticity for the inner azaborine rings in the BN-embedded PAH oligomers. The frontier orbitals of the longer oligomers are delocalized over the inner aromatic rings. Consequently, the inner moieties of the BN-embedded PAH oligomers are more active than the outer parts. This is confirmed by a simple oxidation reaction, which has significant effects on the aromaticity and the intramolecular charge-transfer interactions.

Abstract:The electronic and optical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present a strong dependence on their size and geometry. We tackle this issue by analyzing the spectral features of two prototypical classes of PAHs, belonging to D6h and D2h symmetry point groups and related to coronene as multifunctional seed. While the size variation induces an overall red shift of the spectra and a redistribution of the oscillator strength between the main peaks, a lower molecular symmetry is responsible for the appearance of new optical features. Along with broken molecular orbital degeneracies, optical peaks split and dark states are activated in the low-energy part of the spectrum. Supported by a systematic analysis of the composition and the character of the optical transitions, our results contribute in shedding light to the mechanisms responsible for spectral modifications in the visible and near UV absorption bands of medium-size PAHs.

Abstract:Despite the remarkable synthetic accomplishments in creating diverse polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with B-N bonds (BN-PAHs), their optoelectronic applications have been less exploited. Herein, we report the achievement of high-mobility organic semiconductors based on existing BN-PAHs through a "periphery engineering" strategy. Tetraphenyl- and diphenyl-substituted BN-anthracenes (TPBNA and DPBNA, respectively) are designed and synthesized. DPBNA exhibits the highest hole mobility of 1.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 in organic field-effect transistors, significantly outperforming TPBNA and all the reported BN-PAHs. Remarkably, this is the first BN-PAH with mobility over 1 cm2 V-1 s-1 , which is a benchmark value for practical applications as compared with amorphous silicon. Furthermore, high-performance phototransistors based on DPBNA are also demonstrated, implying the high potential of BN-PAHs for optoelectronic applications when the "periphery engineering" strategy is implemented.
Size Isn't Everything: Geometric Tuning in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Its Implications for Carbon Nanodots

Abstract:Recent developments in light-emitting carbon nanodots and molecular organic semiconductors have seen renewed interest in the properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as a family. The networks of delocalized π electrons in sp2-hybridized carbon grant PAHs light-emissive properties right across the visible spectrum. However, the mechanistic understanding of their emission energy has been limited due to the ground state-focused methods of determination. This computational chemistry work, therefore, seeks to validate existing rules and elucidate new features and characteristics of PAHs that influence their emissions. Predictions based on (time-dependent) density functional theory account for the full 3-dimensional electronic structure of ground and excited states and reveal that twisting and near-degeneracies strongly influence emission spectra and may therefore be used to tune the color of PAHs and, hence, carbon nanodots. We particularly note that the influence of twisting goes beyond torsional destabilization of the ground-state and geometric relaxation of the excited state, with a third contribution associated with the electric transition dipole. Symmetries and peri-condensation may also have an effect, but this could not be statistically confirmed. In pursuing this goal, we demonstrate that with minimal changes to molecular size, the entire visible spectrum may be spanned by geometric modification alone; we have also provided a first estimate of emission energy for 35 molecules currently lacking published emission spectra as well as clear guidelines for when more sophisticated computational techniques are required to predict the properties of PAHs accurately.

Abstract:Introducing BN units into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons expands the chemical space of conjugated materials with novel properties. However, it is challenging to achieve accurate synthesis of BN-PAHs with specific BN positions and orientations. Here, three new parent B2 N2 -perylenes with different BN orientations are synthesized with BN-naphthalene as the building block, providing systematic insight into the effects of BN incorporation with different orientations on the structure, (anti)aromaticity, crystal packing and photophysical properties. The intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction shortens the π-π stacking distance. The crystal structure, (anti)aromaticity, and photophysical properties vary with the change of BN orientation. The revealed BN doping effects may provide a guideline for the synthesis of BN-PAHs with specific stacking structures, and the synthetic strategy employed here can be extended toward the synthesis of larger BN-embedded PAHs with adjustable BN patterns.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have become important materials in the field of high-speed optical devices due to the changes in light absorption and refraction caused by the photoelectric field. Compounds tend to exist as aggregates rather than single molecules, so intermolecular interactions are crucial to the nature of aggregates. Therefore, to study the effects of intermolecular interactions on nonlinear optical properties, we use a dimer simplified model and adopt the methods of controlling variables, which are the different intermolecular interactions resulting from the different stacking patterns of dimers based on the same monomer structures (2PMDI-1NDI and 2NDI-1PDI). It is found that compared with dimers involving π-π interactions, dimers involving C-H···O interactions have shorter intermolecular distances, larger intermolecular interaction energies, and smaller highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gaps. Moreover, the C-H···O interactions are more conducive to the intermolecular charge transfers and more beneficial for increasing the nonlinear optical response values of aggregates with respect to π-π interactions. This work provides an important basis for the influence of intermolecular interactions on nonlinear optical properties.

Abstract:The concept of aggregate science was proposed to explain changes in materials performance that accompany the generation of aggregates, but aggregation-triggered multifunction improvements in a class of materials have rarely been reported. Herein, we present the first report of a new class of multifunctional aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens (AIEgens) based on 5,10-diarylphenazine (DPZ) derivates with full-wavelength emission. Intriguingly, multiple properties, such as fluorescence intensity and free radical and type I reactive oxygen species (ROS) efficiencies, could be simultaneously activated from the unim-olecular level to the aggregate state. The mechanisms of this multiple performance improvement are discussed in detail based on sufficient performance characterization, and some of the newly prepared AIEgens exhibited toxicity to cancer cells during photodynamic therapy. This work systematically demonstrates the positive effect of aggregation on improving multiple functions of materials, which is expected to promote the development of aggregate science theory for the design of multifunctional materials.

Abstract:In recent years, low-bandgap polymers have attracted much attention in a wide range of fields. The synthesis of these compounds has been focused on three factors according to the Roncali bandgap theory: 1)the degree of bond-length alternation (E-r), 2)the aromatic resonance energy of the cycle (E-Res), and 3)the substituted groups (E-Sub). Herein, we have designed and prepared low-bandgap polymers in a different way by using the factors E (the deviation from planarity of the polymer chain) and E-Int (the interaction of the molecular chains in the solid state). Thus, three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with different spatial constructions, based on hexaphenylbenzene derivatives, were prepared in this work: linear (P1-OX), V (P2-OX), and zigzag (P3-OX) types. These well-defined polymers exhibited interesting optical and electrochemistry behavior due to their different extents of planarity. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry gave the incremental orderly molecular weight distributions of P1, P2, and P3, the weight-average molecular weights (M?w ) of which were 9000, 5500, and 69000, respectively. Their lamellar layer structures and - intermolecular stacking were demonstrated by using two-dimensional grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction, which revealed the edge-on chain conformation. Finally, the materials were perfectly adapted to fabricate high-performance organic field-effect transistor devices, which revealed that these compounds could have great prospects as semiconductors.

Abstract:Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons A pentagon‐heptagon‐embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) consisting of B‐N heteroatoms (BN‐2) is synthesized in only two steps. Combining spectroscopic measurements and theoretical calculations, the excited‐state dynamics of the resultant BN‐doped PAHs are well‐investigated, demonstrating both prompt fluorescence and long‐lived delayed fluorescence components with their triplet excited‐state lifetimes in the microsecond time region. Tunable third‐order NLO properties of acene derivatives with molecular structural modification

Abstract:Abstract The substitution of heteroatoms and the expansion of π‐conjugated units have significant effects on the photoelectric properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this study, based on the experimental molecule PBC, 10 acene derivatives containing the pyrrole group were designed by three strategies: (1) changing the connection position of the pyrrole group, (2) exchanging the position of the N atom, and (3) increasing the length of the π‐linker. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to optimize the molecular geometric structure. Time‐dependent density functional theory (TD‐DFT) was used to calculate the relevant parameters of the excited states. The results show that both of the pyrrole group and the N atom in the para‐position, and the addition of the π‐linker can reduce the energy gap, cause redshift of the linear absorption peak, and increase the two photon absorption (TPA) cross‐section. The analyses of the charge density difference (CDD) and the charge‐transfer matrix (CTM) proved that the electron transfer is mainly concentrated in the π‐linker. Moreover, the participation of the multi‐ring skeleton on both sides decreases gradually with the increase of the length of the π‐linker. The length of the π‐linker changes the dominant transition channel and intramolecular charge‐transfer (ICT) characteristics of TPA, thus affecting the transition dipole moments and nonlinear absorption properties. The second hyperpolarizability of the designed molecule PBI5‐p5 is also significantly superior to that of similar materials reported. It is expected that the above molecular design strategies and comprehensive analysis of nonlinear optical (NLO) properties could provide theoretical support for the research on acene derivatives.

Electronic and optical properties of families of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: a systematic (time-dependent) density functional theory study

Abstract:Homologous classes of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in their crystalline state are among the most promising materials for organic opto-electronics. Following previous works on oligoacenes we present a systematic comparative study of the electronic, optical, and transport properties of oligoacenes, phenacenes, circumacenes, and oligorylenes. Using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT we computed: (i) electron affinities and first ionization energies; (ii) quasiparticle correction to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap; (iii) molecular reorganization energies; (iv) electronic absorption spectra of neutral and $\pm1$ charged systems. The excitonic effects are estimated by comparing the optical gap and the quasiparticle corrected HOMO-LUMO energy gap. For each molecular property computed, general trends as a function of molecular size and charge state are discussed. Overall, we find that circumacenes have the best transport properties, displaying a steeper decrease of the molecular reorganization energy at increasing sizes, while oligorylenes are much more efficient in absorbing low-energy photons in comparison to the other classes.

Concavity Effects on the Optical Properties of Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract:We study the modifications on the ground and excited state properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), induced by the variation of concavity and $\pi$-connectivity. Inspired by experimentally feasible systems, we study three series of PAHs, from H-saturated graphene flakes to geodesic buckybowls, related to the formation of fullerene C60 and C50-carbon nanotube caps. Working within the framework of quantum chemistry semi-empirical methods AM1 and ZINDO/S, we find that the interplay between concavity and \pi-connectivity shifts the bright optical lines to higher energies, and introduces symmetry-forbidden dark excitations at low energy. A generally good agreement with the available experimental data supports our results, which can be viewed as the basis for designing optical properties of novel curved aromatic molecules.

The Correlated Electronic States of a few Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: A Computational Study

Abstract:In recent years Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been studied for their electronic properties as they are viewed as nanodots of graphene. They have also been of interest as functional molecules for applications such as light emitting diodes and solar cells. Since last few years varying structural and chemical properties corresponding to the size and geometry of these molecules have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. In this paper, we carry out a systematic study of the electronic states of several PAHs using the Pariser-Parr-Pople model which incorporates long-range electron correlations. In all the molecules studied by us, we find that the 2A state is below the 1B state and hence none of them will be fluorescent in the gaseous phase. The singlet-triplet gap is more than one-half of the singlet-singlet gap in all cases and hence none of these PAHs can be candidates for improved solar cell efficiencies in a singlet fission. We discuss in detail the properties of the electronic states which include bond orders and spin densities (in triplets) of these systems.

Abstract:Molecular structure, external stimuli, and environmental factors all have a strong effect on the internal molecular rotation and vibration of aggregate-induced emission (AIE) luminogens. Here, we report the AIE effect for several newly synthesized amphiphilic tetra(benzimidazole)phenylethene (TBiPE) derivatives and their binuclear N-heterocyclic carbene silver (NHC-Ag) metallacycles in solutions, aggregates, and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. Monolayer behaviors and microscopic images indicate that introducing alkyl chains and binuclear NHC-Ag metallacycles can facilitate the formation of a well-defined insoluble monomolecular layer at the air-water interface. Absorption and luminescence spectral features suggest that both the TBiPEs' cyclization structure and binuclear NHC-Ag metallacycles can provide additional driving forces to restrict the internal molecular motion of the tetraphenylethene (TPE) unit, thus enhancing the AIE effects. Further, external stimuli and environmental factors such as poor solvent addition and LB film deposition also play important roles in the photoluminescent intensity, maximum wavelength, and lifetime. These internal and external factors can result in around 30-40 nm blue-shift for the maximum luminescence wavelength and 2-3 times shorter for the luminescent lifetime. These phenomena can be attributed to the reason that the nonradiative energy transfer efficiency is weakened because of the enhanced hydrophobic interaction and metal-carbene coordination as well as the closely packed arrangement of AIEgens in the LB films; consequently, the radiation energy transfer efficiency increased.
The effect of heteroatoms of end groups for anthracene derivatives on photoelectric properties and crystal/film morphology: A theoretical perspective

Abstract:Three anthracene derivatives with 2,6-diphenylanthracene core and C-, O-, and S-bridged alkyl chain substituents (BEPAnt, BOPAnt, and BSPAn) exhibit relatively balanced high luminescence and mobility properties, which can be candidates for organic light-emitting transistor device materials. The optoelectronic properties of three anthracene derivatives were investigated by quantum chemistry calculations. The results show that BEPAnt and BOPAnt exhibit high hole mobility (3.60 and 1.35 cm2 V-1 s-1) and blue emission fluorescence quantum yield (>80%). In addition, the growth morphology of crystal/film can affect their properties, especially charge transport behavior, but is often overlooked in theoretical computing. Hence, the morphological evolution of organic thin-film is characterized by the attachment energy (AE) model. The predicted morphologies for BEPAnt and BOPAnt are consistent with the shape of their single-crystal films by physical vapor transport (PVT) technique. The growth thickness and diameter ratios of each BEPAnt crystal facet prove the accuracy of the AE model. Notably, symmetrical hydrogen bond interactions within and between crystal layers facilitate the formation of a large flat film such as BOPAnt, which is conducive to better performance of charge transport properties in the experiment. We hope this study can clearly understand the driving forces that affect the crystal surface growth rate, and then provide valuable guidance for the design and regulation of organic semiconductor molecules with ideal crystal morphology.
