Abstract:A novel solid acid catalyst was prepared by the copolymerization of p-toluenesulfonic acid and paraformaldehyde and then characterized by FT-IR, TG/DTG, HRTEM and N2-BET. Furfural was successfully produced by the dehydration of xylose and xylan using the novel catalyst in γ-valerolactone. This investigation focused on effects of various reaction conditions including solvent, acid catalyst, reaction temperature, residence time, water concentration, xylose loading and catalyst dosage on the dehydration of xylose to furfural. It was found that the solid catalyst displayed extremely high activity for furfural production. 80.4% furfural yield with 98.8% xylose conversion was achieved at 170°C for 10 min. The catalyst could be recycled at least five times without significant loss of activity. Furthermore, 83.5% furfural yield and 19.5% HMF yield were obtained from raw corn stalk under more severe conditions (190°C for 100 min).

Abstract:5-(Chloromethyl) Furfural (CMF) is a potential chemical building block for replacing petroleum-derived chemicals derived from lignocellulosic feedstocks. In this study, hand harvested corn stover and mechanically forage chopped corn stover was processed in a 1 L hydrolysis reactor to produce CMF in a biphasic, two solvent system. Both 1,2 dichloroethane (DCE) and dichloromethane (DCM) were tested as organic solvents. The results showed that DCE performed better than DCM due to temperature and pressure limitations of the reactor system. Using DCE as the extracting solvent, the effects of solids loading, particle size, and moisture content of the corn stover on the hydrolysis efficiency were determined. One liter acid hydrolysis reactor provides consistent and reproducible yields of 63% CMF from hand harvested corn stover as feedstock at solid loading of 10% wt/v, 100C for 1 h. For the forage chopped corn stover, increasing particle size brings an increase in the feedstock sugar content. Foraged chopped corn stover (FCCS) particle sizes larger than 19 mm (0.75 in.) results in significant reduction in CMF yield from 43 to 35%.

Abstract:One-step fractionation with concentrated formic acid at elevated temperatures with short retention time was investigated for corn stover valorization. Crude pulp (CP) with high purity of cellulose and FA-lignin (FAL) with high guaiacyl content were fractionated through one-step mild pretreatment. Formylation reaction on both CP and FAL fractions occurred during the pretreatment and improved the hydrophobicity and thermal stability of CPs and FALs. The presence of formyl group on CPs significantly inhibited the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency for sugar production, however, the formylated cellulose showed super high reactivity and selectivity for HMF production through catalysis by maleic acid and aluminum chloride in acetonitrile-water co-solvent system. In addition, the fractionated FAL fraction exhibited a loose structure which is prominent for its further catalytic conversion into chemicals and energy.

Abstract:The valorization of cellulose in lignocellulose into high-value products is a crucial step in biorefinery processes. In this study, FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O was impregnated and supported on a carbon-based substrate, followed by carbonization and sulfonation to prepare the composite carbon-based solid acid. The resulting composite carbon-based solid acid was used as the catalyst, while γ-valerolactone, a lactone solvent, served as the reaction medium for producing furfural as the product from cellulose. When using this catalytic system to treat cellulose, under appropriate reaction temperature and residence time, the yield of furfural reached 75.26%, while the conversion rate of cellulose was 99.8%. Characterization techniques including SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, and Py-FTIR were employed to confirm that the composite carbon-based solid acid possessed Brønsted acid sites, Lewis acid sites, and -Cl active groups, all of which exhibited excellent catalytic activity and selectivity towards furfural production. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between the catalytic activity of the three active groups in the carbon-based solid acid and the inhibitory effect of the nonpolar solvent on side reactions contributed to the outstanding performance of the catalytic system. And this study proposes a possible reaction pathway for the conversion of cellulose to furfural. This research provides an efficient pathway for the valorization of cellulose and holds significance in furfural production and biomass conversion.

Abstract:γ-Valerolactone is an excellent green solvent for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into platform chemicals. A green and efficient production process of furfural from corn cob was investigated under mild reaction temperature (170–210 °C): γ-valerolactone as solvent, H-ZSM-5 as catalyst. A maximum furfural yield of 71.68% was obtained under 190 °C for 60 min with 35 g/L H-ZSM-5 (1.4 g H-ZSM-5/g corn cob).The high yield of furfural could be primarily explained by the highly catalytic activity of H-ZSM-5 and suppression of condensation reactions between intermediates and furfural molecular due to the solvent effect of γ-valerolactone. Infrared spectroscopy of pyridine adsorption was applied to measure the density of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites in the H-ZSM-5. The Brønsted acid sites density of H-ZSM-5 was 656 μmol/g. The results showed that Brønsted acid sites of H-ZSM-5 zeolite were critical components which was benefit for the furfural production. More significantly, the Saeman model was exploited to estimate the concentration of furfural which well agreed with the experimental data. Additionally, the activation energy for furfural production from corn cob was 67.67 kJ/mol, which was calculated by a modified Arrhenius equation. The model gave a profound knowledge in the furfural production process from corn cob with H-ZSM-5 zeolite in γ-valerolactone.

Abstract:Conversion of corn cob to furfural was investigated using γ-valerolactone as the solvent with a dilute sulfuric acid catalyst. A maximum furfural yield of 99.50% was obtained at 190 °C for 20 min with 0.10% sulfuric acid. A well-evaluated kinetic model was used for this reaction, and its activation energy was calculated. The model agreed closely with the experimental data and kinetics parameters, indicating that γ-valerolactone accelerated furfural formation and decreased the degradation rate as compared to water. Moreover, using γ-valerolactone as a solvent changed the energetics of the conversion reaction of hemicellulose to improve the formation of furfural. The response surface plots of the furfural concentration with respect to the temperature and dilute sulfuric acid density improved our understanding of the furfural production reaction from corn cob in γ-valerolactone solvents.

Abstract:A novel solid acid catalyst (SO3H-NG-C) was synthesized from biomass-derived glucosamine hydrochloride by carbonization, activation and sulfonation processes. The SO3H-NG-C was characterized by SEM, TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, elemental analysis, XRD, FTIR, Py-IR and XPS to reveal its physical and chemical properties. The SO3H-NG-C was used as a catalyst for converting corn stover into furfural and 5-hydromethylfurfural (5-HMF) via a one-step process. The effects of reaction temperature and time, solvent types, water concentrations, corn stover concentration, catalyst loading and catalyst stability were investigated systematically. 53 % furfural yield and17 % 5-HMF yield were obtained from 200 mg corn stover at 190 °C in 80 min using 100 mg SO3H-NG-C in Ƴ-valerolactone (GVL). Moreover, the used catalyst was separated from corn stover residue via sieve, and the catalyst showed reasonable stability for corn stover conversion.

Abstract:Furfural is considered to be one of the top 30 potential chemicals derived from lignocellulosic biomass. Compared to conventional diluted acid catalysis, furfural production from lignocellulose was significantly improved by the addition of an immiscible organic solvent into the diluted acid solution. However, high conversion is usually achieved under a high water/solid ratio (>1, v/m), and the furfural product is distributed in both the organic solvent phase and the aqueous phase, leading to difficulty of furfural recovery and increasing the cost of furfural production. The present work investigated corncob conversion in a diluted sulfuric acid-toluene biphasic system with extremely low water/solid ratios (≤1). It was found that a high furfural yield (65.67 mol%) was achieved in a very short time (10 min) under a high solid loading of 200% (in the aqueous phase) under the conditions of 1.5 MPa N2, 0.5:1 water/solid ratio (v/w), 10:1 toluene/solid ratio (v/m), and 3.85 wt% H2SO4 (in the aqueous phase). After the reaction, no aqueous phase existed, and furfural was completely accumulated in the toluene phase. Further research showed that the majority of the furfural content (84.73%, GC-MS detection) was in the toluene phase, which is beneficial for its recovery. This work provides an effective and inexpensive method for the production of furfural from lignocellulose.

Abstract:A carbonaceous solid acid catalyst with high strong-acid density was synthesized by facile functionalization of a biomass-derived mesoporous carbon with benzenesulfonic acid. The catalyst was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and N2 adsorption–desorption. The carbonaceous solid catalyst containing Brønsted acid sites was used for the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from hexoses such as fructose, glucose, and cellulose in γ-valerolactone (GVL)-H2O mixture. By reaction at 130 °C for 20 min using fructose as a feedstock, an HMF yield 78.1% was achieved. The catalytic performance of the catalyst in conversion of fructose into HMF hardly changed over seven cycles, demonstrating that the catalyst had excellent recyclability. The yields of HMF derived from glucose and cellulose reached 33.2 and 22.5%, respectively, whereas those of total furans were 42.1 and 33.7%, respectively. The proposed reaction system was promising in transforming biomass-based carbohydrates into fine chemicals, given the use of green functionalization methods, the utilization of sustainable biomass-derived carbon precursor and solvents, catalyst with high acid density, and the availability of high HMF yield.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based solid acid catalyst (SC-GCa-800) was prepared by the carbonization of calcium gluconate at high-temperature followed by sulfonation with 4-diazoniobenzenesulfonate at room temperature. The catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, XPS, TEM, SEM, TGA, N-2 adsorption-desorption and elemental analysis to reveal its physical and chemical properties. Furthermore, the effects of reaction temperature, retention time, substrate concentration, catalyst loading and solvent types were investigated. It was demonstrated that SC-GCa-800 is an efficient solid acid catalyst for furfural production obtained from xylose in 1,4-dioxane. A 76.9% furfural yield can be achieved from 100 mg xylose at 140 degrees C in 40 min by using a 50 mg catalyst. The catalyst showed high stability and could be recycled five times without a significant loss of catalytic activity. The results indicated that the high catalytic activity of SC-GCa-800 was dependent on its high acidity, BET surface and pore structure. More importantly, the furfural can be obtained at low temperature (100-140 degrees C) and separated easily from the solvent due to the low boiling point of 1,4-dioxane.

Abstract:To obtain an efficient and green reaction system for the production of furfural (FF), this study investigated the use of a SO3H-finactiopgized ionic liquid as a catalyst for the conversion of xylose in a solvent of renewable gamma-valerolactone (GVL). A high FF yield of 7842% was obtained in this reaction system catalyzed by 1-propylsulfonic-3-methylimidazolium chloride at 140 degrees C. The GVL remarkably enhanced the reaction rate and increased the xylose conversion and FF yield because the solvent effect of GVL, could improve the catalytic activity of the acidic protons and suppress the side reactions. In addition, the ionic liquids showed satisfactory catalytic performance in the conversion of xylose to FF due to functionalization by introducing a SO3H group. The conversion of, other CS carbohydrates (arabinose and xylan) was also tested in this system, and moderate FF yields were achieved.

Abstract:The production of γ-valerolactone (GVL) receives increasing attention due to its extensive applications as a promising fuel and fuel additive. In this study, the direct conversion of biomass-derived furfural to GVL with a unprecedent yield of 90.5% was achieved via consecutive hydrogenation and acid-catalyzed reactions over CuAl for hydrogenation and a co-catalyst (i.e. H-ZSM-5) for acid-catalysis in ethanol. The relative abundance of the hydrogenation sites and acidic sites determines the reaction network and the transfer of the main products from furfuryl alcohol (FA) to ethyl levulinate (EL) or GVL, as the acidic sites, especially the Brønsted acidic sites, not only catalyze the formation of EL from FA, but also affect the hydrogenation activity of CuAl. However, the Lewis acidic sites facilitate the opening ring of FA to 1,4-pentanediol, preventing the GVL formation. The acid catalyst and hydrogenation catalyst deactivate via varied mechanisms in the conversion of furfural to GVL, which is required to be considered in the further development of the robust catalysts.

Abstract:A multifunctional Zr-containing catalyst (FM-Zr-ARS) was successfully synthesized by a modulated hydrothermal synthesis route. Systematic characterization results supported the presence of robust porous inorganic-organic frameworks stabilized by the strong coordination interaction of Zr4+ with oxygen-rich functional groups in Alizarin red S (ARS). Moreover, the -O-Zr-O- network in the FM-Zr-ARS structure formed a rich content of acid-base sites. In addition, the inherent sulfonic groups in ARS made the FM-Zr-ARS hybrids possess Brønsted acid sites. Therefore, under the synergistic catalysis of the multiple functional sites, FM-Zr-ARS showed remarkably high catalytic activity for γ-valerolactone (GVL) production from levulinate esters and furfural. Finally, 72.4 % and 97.7 % yields of GVL were obtained in the conversion of furfural and ethyl levulinate, respectively, after 8 h of reaction at 433 K. On the basis of the role of different functional sites, a plausible catalytic mechanism was presented for the conversion of biomass-derived furfural to GVL.

Abstract:Furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) have been identified as promising bio-platform furans that have a wide range of potential applications as biofuels, bioplastics, and biochemicals. Furfural and HMF are typically synthesized from the substrates of C5 sugars and C6 sugars, respectively. Furfural can also be produced from C6 sugars, which is technically more challenging owing to the higher energy requirement for carbon–carbon bond cleavage. In this study, the simultaneous production of furfural and HMF from glucose was conducted over different binary catalyst systems of Brønsted acids and Lewis acids using γ-valerolactone (GVL) as the solvent. A promising performance was achieved by a SnSO4-H2SO4 coupling catalyst, with an optimized furfural yield of 42% and an HMF yield of 34% at 443 K in GVL. In addition, a kinetics study was performed in order to understand the mechanism of the simultaneous formation of furfural and HMF from glucose at different temperatures and GVL/water ratios. The results showed that the ratio of furfural to HMF production rate at different temperatures (433 to 463 K) or GVL/water ratios (90 to 80%) was constant close to 1, suggesting that the production of furfural and HMF might follow similar reaction pathways. Finally, the reaction pathway of glucose conversion to furfural and HMF was proposed based on the experimental and kinetics studies.

Abstract:A two-step hydrolysis method was evaluated as a potential means of obtaining high yields of furfural and levulinic acid from corn stover using sulfuric acid as catalyst in a water/gamma-valerolactone (GVL) system. The corn stover underwent a high-temperature hydrolysis process to produce levulinic acid, followed by a low-temperature hydrolysis process to produce furfural. A series of experiments were conducted to explore the relationship between the different reaction parameters and the final yields of furfural and levulinic acid. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures together with X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were used to further elaborate on the hydrolysis results. Molar yields of about 70.65% furfural and 57.7% levulinic acid were obtained by applying this method with a low temperature of 140 °C and a high temperature of 190 °C, together with 0.2 M of sulfuric acid used as the catalyst. These results indicated that this was an effective way to obtain satisfactory yields of furfural and levulinic acid from corn stover.
Γ-Valerolactone Production from Furfural Residue with Formic Acid As the Sole Hydrogen Resource Via an Integrated Strategy on Au-Ni/ZrO2

Abstract:The integrated conversion of raw lignocellulosic biomass selectively to gamma-valerolactone (GVL), using formic acid as the sole hydrogen resource, is of great importance from economic and engineering viewpoints. In this work, we developed an integrated strategy for GVL production from furfural residue. Wherein, levulinic acid and formic acid were produced from furfural residue using SnCl4 as a catalyst in the first step, which were subsequently employed as feedstock for GVL production by the catalysis of a developed bimetallic Au-Ni/ZrO2 catalyst in the second step. It was revealed that an appropriate amount of Ni loading could promote the reduction of Au delta+ to Au-0, and facilitated Au-0 dispersion with less aggregation, when compared to the Au/ZrO2 catalyst. Ni loading also slightly enhanced the amount of Lewis acid on the catalyst. These contributions enabled the high activity of 1Au-2Ni//ZrO2 catalyst with a very small amount of Au loading for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid with formic acid as hydrogen resource, and the subsequent dehydration reaction. 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran extraction before the second step effectively removed the byproducts, possibly polymer/humins, formed simultaneously with levulinic acid, thereby significantly alleviating catalyst poison. With the addition of extra formic acid, overall yields of GVL as high as 51.5 mol % were achieved, based on the total C6 sugar in furfural residue. This work gives a potential strategy for the production of GVL directly from raw lignocellulosic biomass, using formic acid as the sole hydrogen resource.

The morphology and structure, elemental information, and total acid and base properties of the ZrCN/H-β and related catalysts (H-β, CN/H-β, and Zr/H-β) were determined by SEM, TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD-NH3, CO2) characterizations. The effects of reaction temperature and time, and the furfural dosage on GVL production as well as the recyclability of ZrCN/H-β were investigated. With a catalyst/furfural dosage of 0.1/0.22 g, the ZrCN/H-β produced a remarkable 76.5% of GVL yield at 160 °C in 18 h using isopropanol as the solvent. The results of NH3, CO2-TPD experiments indicated that the simultaneous introduction of Zr species and carbon nitride onto H-β formed new types of acid and base, which should be responsible for the high efficient conversion of furfural to GVL. Additionally, the recyclability of ZrCN/H-β was reasonable.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefication of biomass to produce high-quality chemicals and liquid fuels is considered as a renewable and sustainable technology. Herein, a one-step hydrothermal method was used to prepare microcrystalline cellulose supported carbon-based catalyst PTA-BC with the activation factor of phosphotungstic acid. It was demonstrated by Py-FTIR, NH3-TPD and XPS that PTA-BC is not only rich in functional groups but also contains Brønsted acid sites (hydroxyl groups) and Lewis acid sites (CC, carboxyl groups). After experimental optimization, the optimum yield of furfural obtained from xylose catalyzed by PTA-BC was 81.02% at the reaction temperature of 180 °C and the reaction time of 20 min. The results show that PTA-BC contains –COOH, –OH and CC as catalytic sites and that the synergistic effect of these functional groups. The nature of the reaction solvent, appropriate reaction temperature and residence time are the main reasons for the good catalytic performance. This work provides a promising way for the synthesis of solid acid catalyst, which has a wide application prospect for the production of furfural.

Abstract:The direct production of value‐added chemicals from biomass via multiple conversion processes with a sole renewable solid catalyst is promising for carbon‐neutral development while challenging. Herein, a series of novel bioresourced organic‐inorganic hybrid materials were synthesized from bio‐based ascorbic acid (Vc), zirconium chloride (ZrCl4) and p‐toluenesulfonic acid (p‐TSA) through a facile solvothermal process. The as‐prepared Zr‐Vc‐3 catalyst with Vc, ZrCl4, and p‐TSA in the 1:1:0.5 molar ratio displayed outstanding performance in direct furfural‐to‐γ‐valerolactone (GVL) transformation, giving an ultrahigh GVL yield of 76.2%, with an ideal activation energy (55.46 kJ mol–1), outperforming state‐of‐the‐art catalysts. The superior performance of Zr‐Vc‐3 could be ascribed to its good reusability, relatively large pore size, suitable amount of acid‐base sites, and good hydrophobicity. Mechanistic studies unveiled that Lewis acid‐base sites facilitate the conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and isopropyl levulinate (IPL) to 4‐hydroxypentanoate via transfer hydrogenation process, while Brønsted acid sites are instrumental in the ring‐opening of furfuryl alcohol to IPL and the lactonization of 4‐hydroxypentanoate to GVL, overall contributing to the multi‐step conversion of furfural to GVL in a single pot. This work provides a valuable reference for precisely constructing bio‐based OIHMs with tailored functionalities for one‐pot valorization of biomass feedstocks via tandem reactions.
