Abstract:• A general FEM for nonlinear heat conduction with temperature-dependent properties and boundary conditions is developed. • The internal nonlinearity of FEM induced by derivatives of temperature-dependent terms is revealed in general FEM. • The induced nonlinearity terminates the equivalence of Galerkin residual and variational analyses. • The general FEM is adopted as local refinement of governing equation in pursuit for efficiency. In simulation of heat conduction with temperature-independent physical properties and boundary conditions (BCs), Galerkin residual analysis and variational analysis yield equivalent finite element method (FEM), the conventional FEM. However, if the properties and BCs are temperature-dependent, it is discovered that their derivatives further induce nonlinearity of FEM which consequently generates divergence between the two analyses. A general FEM, extension of variational analysis, is derived as general form of conventional FEM modeling nonlinear heat conduction. Numerical examples demonstrate that the general FEM produces results with considerably higher accuracy and stability and also possesses higher performances on conforming with both two analyses. Since general FEM degenerates to conventional FEM if derivatives are of small-amplitude or zero and its direct implementation to the entire domain is costive, general FEM is alternatively utilized as local refinement of governing equation only to points with significant derivatives. The strategy of local refinement is optimized to enhance efficiency.

The Tempered Finite Element Method

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new approach -- the Tempered Finite Element Method (TFEM) -- that extends the Finite Element Method (FEM) to classes of meshes that include zero-measure or nearly degenerate elements for which standard FEM approaches do not allow convergence. First, we review why the maximum angle condition [2] is not necessary for FEM convergence and what are the real limitations in terms of meshes. Next, we propose a simple modification of the classical FEM for elliptic problems that provably allows convergence for a wider class of meshes including bands of caps that cause locking of the solution in standard FEM formulations. The proposed method is trivial to implement in an existing FEM code and can be theoretically analyzed. We prove that in the case of exactly zero-measure elements it corresponds to mortaring. We show numerically and theoretically that what we propose is functional and sound. The remainder of the paper is devoted to extensions of the TFEM method to linear elasticity, mortaring of non-conforming meshes, high-order elements, and advection.

Abstract:The finite element (FE) method is a numerical technique for computing approximate solutions to complex mathematical problems described by differential equations. The method was developed in the 1950s to solve complicated problems in engineering, notably in elasticity and structural mechanics modeling involving elliptic partial differential equations and complicated geometries. But nowadays the range of applications is quite extensive. In particular, the FE method has been successfully applied to many problems such as fluid–structure interaction, thermomechanical, thermochemical, thermo-chemo-mechanical problems, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, piezoelectric, ferroelectric, electromagnetics, and many others. This chapter contains a summary of the FE method. Since the remaining chapters of this textbook are based on the FE method, we present it in this chapter as a method for approximating solutions of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs).

Abstract:This book presents the mathematical theory of finite elements, starting from basic results on approximation theory and finite element interpolation and building up to more recent research topics, such as and Discontinuous Galerkin, subgrid viscosity stabilization, and a posteriori error estimation. The body of the text is organized into three parts plus two appendices collecting the functional analysis results used in the book. The first part develops the theoretical basis for the finite element method and emphasizes the fundamental role of inf-sup conditions. The second party addresses various applications encompassing elliptic PDE's, mixed formulations, first-order PDEs, and the time-dependent versions of these problems. The third part covers implementation issues and should provide readers with most of the practical details needed to write or understand a finite element code. Written at the graduate level, the text contains numerous examples and exercises and is intended to serve as a graduate textbook. Abstract:Here we review the basic steps of the modern and accurate finite element method in its application to solve ordinary differential equations in physics. To exemplify this well-in-vogue numerical technique, we have chosen the second-order Poisson-Boltzmann equation, which is a classic equation of colloid science. Aiming to formulate a viable, but didactic, implementation of the finite element technique, we have combined a linear basis of functions, the Galerkin weighted residuals method, the Swartz-Wendroff approximation and the Picard iteration algorithm. In summary, the finite element method transforms a differential equation into a simpler system of algebraic equations for the coefficients of the approximate solution in terms of a set of basis functions. We describe the full computational realisation of the finite element procedure and, also, we examine the corresponding Poisson-Boltzmann numerical predictions for various representative conditions.

Abstract:In this paper we derive error estimates for infinite element method used in the approximation of solutions of interface problems. Furthermore, approximations of stress intensity factors are given. The infinite element method may be considered as a certain scheme of mesh refinement, but it has the advantages that the refinement is easy to be constructed that the stiffness matrix can be calculated efficiently, and that an approximate solution which has a singularity at the singular point can be also obtained.

Abstract:Advanced Finite Element Method in Structural Engineering systematically introduces the research work on the Finite Element Method (FEM), which was completed by Prof. Yu-qiu Long and his research group in the past 25 years. Seven original theoretical achievements - for instance, the Generalized Conforming Element method, to name one - and their applications in the fields of structural engineering and computational mechanics are discussed in detail. Abstract:For h-type adaptive finite element method, the local mesh refinement introduces irregular nodes and destroys the standard continuity between elements. The reference nodes of the irregular are used to interpolate element coordinates and displacements. The improved shape functions, of which the conventional shape functions are a particular case, are presented to guarantee the continuity. No changes but the shape functions are needed when the method is applied in finite element programs. The computational results show the features of the method: higher accuracy, simplicity, fewer degrees of freedom and less computation effort.

Abstract:The finite element method can be viewed as a machine that automates the discretization of differential equations, taking as input a variational problem, a finite element and a mesh, and producing as output a system of discrete equations. However, the generality of the framework provided by the finite element method is seldom reflected in implementations (realizations), which are often specialized and can handle only a small set of variational problems and finite elements (but are typically parametrized over the choice of mesh). This paper reviews ongoing research in the direction of a complete automation of the finite element method. In particular, this work discusses algorithms for the efficient and automatic computation of a system of discrete equations from a given variational problem, finite element and mesh. It is demonstrated that by automatically generating and compiling efficient low-level code, it is possible to parametrize a finite element code over variational problem and finite element in addition to the mesh.
