Abstract:Cytogenetical data on Aponogeton (Aponogetonaceae) are very limited. We carried out cytogenetical studies on ten Indian species of Aponogeton and one Madagascan species, A. decaryi . Chromosome counts for three species ( A. lakhonensis, A. nateshii and A. wolfgangianus ) and a new triploid cytotype ( A. satarensis female individual) were reported for the first time. The lowest chromosome number, i.e. 2 n = 26 was observed in A. satarensis and the highest, i.e. 2 n = 86 in A. undulatus. Polysomaty and structural alterations in secondary constrictions was observed in the root-tip cells in A. microphyllus and A. wolfgangianus . Comparative karyotypes of nine taxa revealed chromosomes with median (m) and submedian (sm) region centromeres and two base numbers, x = 8 and x = 13. Male meiosis in the pollen mother cells (PMCs) was normal except for A. natans and A. undulatus that had a pollen viability of 40.01% and 30%, respectively. In A. natans , the chromosomes exhibited fuzzier appearance at diakinesis and the bivalents were seen falling apart indicating irregular synapsis. A total of 1115 PMCs were analysed, of which only 288 (25.83%) showed normal meiosis whereas the remaining 827 (74.17%) exhibited anomalies. The comparative data provided here is the first contribution to the understanding of basics of the cytogenetics of the genus.
