Abstract:Studying the generalized Hamming weights of linear codes is a significant research area within coding theory, as it provides valuable structural information about the codes and plays a crucial role in determining their performance in various applications. However, determining the generalized Hamming weights of linear codes, particularly their weight hierarchy, is generally a challenging task. In this paper, we focus on investigating the generalized Hamming weights of three classes of linear codes over finite fields. These codes are constructed by different defining sets. By analysing the intersections between the definition sets and the duals of all $r$-dimensional subspaces, we get the inequalities on the sizes of these intersections. Then constructing subspaces that reach the upper bounds of these inequalities, we successfully determine the complete weight hierarchies of these codes.

The weight distributions of the linear codes are determined by means of Gaussian period and Weil sums. In some case, there is an almost optimal code with respect to Griesmer bound, which is also an optimal one according to the online code table. The linear codes can also be employed to get secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the generalized Hamming weights of a class of linear codes associated with non-degenerate quadratic forms. In order to do so, we study the quadratic forms over subspaces of finite field and obtain some interesting results about subspaces and their dual spaces. On this basis, we solve all the generalized Hamming weights of these linear codes.

Abstract:In this work, we explore the relationship between the graded free resolution of some monomial ideals and the Generalized Hamming Weights (GHWs) of binary codes. More precisely, we look for a structure that is smaller than the set of codewords of minimal support that provides us with some information about the GHWs. We prove that the first and second generalized Hamming weights of a binary linear code can be computed (by means of a graded free resolution) from a set of monomials associated with a binomial ideal related with the code. Moreover, the remaining weights are bounded above by the degrees of the syzygies in the resolution.

The weight distributions of the linear codes are determined by means of Weil sums and a new type of exponential sums. Abstract:The relative generalized Hamming weight (RGHW) of a linear code C and a subcode C 1 is an extension of generalized Hamming weight. The concept was firstly used to protect messages from an adversary in the wiretap channel of type II with illegitimate parties. It was also applied to the wiretap network II for secrecy control of network coding and to trellis-based decoding algorithms for complexity estimation. For RGHW, bounds and code constructions are two related issues. Upper bounds on RGHW show the possible optimality for the applications, and code constructions meeting upper bounds are for designing optimal schemes. In this article, we show indirect and direct code constructions for known upper bounds on RGHW. When upper bounds are not tight or constructions are hard to find, we provide two asymptotically equivalent existence bounds about good code pairs for designing suboptimal schemes. Particularly, most code pairs ( C , C 1 ) are good when the length n of C is sufficiently large, the dimension k of C is proportional to n and other parameters are fixed. Moreover, the first existence bound yields an implicit lower bound on RGHW, and the asymptotic form of this existence bound generalizes the usual asymptotic Gilbert–Varshamov bound.

Abstract:The relative generalized Hamming weight (RGHW) of a linear code and a linear subcode, a two-code extension of generalized Hamming weight (GHW), has been applied to the wiretap channel of type II. The concept has also been extended in the wiretap network II for the secrecy control of linear network coding. In trellis-based decoding algorithms, a given subcode provides additional information to measure the decoding complexity. Bounds on RGHW facilitate the design of optimal schemes for the above applications. The only known explicit bound on RGHW was the generalized Singleton bound. In this paper, we show some important inequalities with respect to RGHW and then introduce three new bounds, the generalized Plotkin and Griesmer bounds as well as the relative constant-weight (RCW) bound. The relations among the new bounds and the Singleton one are simply discussed.

Abstract:The generalized Hamming weights dr(C) of a linear code C are a natural generalization of the minimum Hamming distance d(C)[=d1(C)] and have become an important research object in coding theory since Wei's originary work in 1991. In this paper, two general formulas on d(C) for irreducible cyclic codes are presented using Gauss sums and the weight hierarchy {d1(C), d2(C), ... , dk(C)} (k= dim C) is completely determined for several cases.

Abstract:The generalized Hamming weights, introduced a few years ago by V. K. Wei, provide substantial information of codes and thus play a central role in coding theory. For algebraic geometric codes, there have been many works on their generalized Hamming weights (or weight hierarchy). However, for lots of codes from Hermitian curves and the Klein quartic, some generalized Hamming weights still have not yet been found explicitly. In this paper, we first prove a general result (Theorem 1.4) on the computation of generalized Hamming weights of geometric Goppa codes on plane curves, using the configuration ofFq-rational points on the curves. Then we give the exact values (Theorem 2.2) of the first and second generalized Hamming weights of some codes arising from the Klein quartic. Our main result (Theorem 2.3) gives the exact values of the second and third generalized Hamming weights of certain codes from Hermitian curves. In the Appendix, a previous known result of Yang, Kumar, and Stichtenoth for Hermitian codes is shown to follow from Theorem 1.4. We also give the exact values of the first three generalized Hamming weights for Fermat codes.

Abstract:The determination of weight distribution of cyclic codes involves the evaluation of Gauss sums and exponential sums. Despite some cases where a neat expression is available, the computation is generally rather complicated. In this note, we determine the weight distribution of a class of reducible cyclic codes whose dual codes may have arbitrarily many zeros. This goal is achieved by building an unexpected connection between the corresponding exponential sums and the spectra of Hermitian forms graphs.

Abstract:Code equivalence is a basic concept in coding theory. The well-known theorem by MacWilliams gives a sufficient condition for code equivalence. Recently the MacWilliams theorem has been generalized, by Fan, Liu and Puig, making use of the generalized Hamming weights (GHWs). In this paper, we will present a further generalization of the MacWilliams theorem. Our result extends both the MacWilliams theorem and the result by Fan, Liu and Puig. We will first define ''relative subcodes'' of a linear code, based on the relative generalized Hamming weights (RGHWs) which is a generalization of the GHWs; and then establish a method based on finite projective geometry to characterize relative subcodes. Using this method, we will prove our main result.

Abstract:Linear codes with a few weights can be applied to communication, consumer electronics and data storage system. In addition, the weight hierarchy of linear codes has many applications such as on the type II wire-tap channel, dealing with $t$-resilient functions and trellis or branch complexity of linear codes and so on. In this paper, we first present a formula for computing the weight hierarchies of linear codes constructed by the generalized method of defining sets. Then, we construct two classes of binary linear codes with a few weights and determine their weight distributions and weight hierarchies completely. Some codes of them can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:Few-weight codes have been constructed and studied for many years, since their fascinating relations to finite geometries, strongly regular graphs and Boolean functions. Simplex codes are one-weight Griesmer $[\frac{q^k-1}{q-1},k ,q^{k-1}]_q$-linear codes and they meet all Griesmer bounds of the generalized Hamming weights of linear codes. All the subcodes with dimension $r$ of a $[\frac{q^k-1}{q-1},k ,q^{k-1}]_q$-simplex code have the same subcode support weight $\frac{q^{k-r}(q^r-1)}{q-1}$ for $1\leq r\leq k$. In this paper, we construct linear codes meeting the Griesmer bound of the $r$-generalized Hamming weight, such codes do not meet the Griesmer bound of the $j$-generalized Hamming weight for $1\leq j<r$. Moreover these codes have only few subcode support weights. The weight distribution and the subcode support weight distributions of these distance-optimal codes are determined. Linear codes constructed in this paper are natural generalizations of distance-optimal few-weight codes.

Abstract:Linear codes can be employed to construct authentication codes, which is an interesting area of cryptography. The parameters of the authentication codes depend on the complete weight enumerator of the underlying linear codes. In order to obtain an authentication code with good parameters, the underlying linear code must have proper parameters. The first objective of this paper is to determine the complete weight enumerators of a class of linear codes with two weights and three weights. The second is to employ these linear codes to construct authentication codes with new parameters.

Abstract:Linear codes have been an interesting subject of study for many years, as linear codes with few weights have applications in secrete sharing, authentication codes, association schemes, and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, a class of linear codes with a few weights over the finite field GF(p) are presented and their weight distributions are also determined, where p is an odd prime. Some of the linear codes obtained are optimal in the sense that they meet certain bounds on linear codes.

Abstract:Recently, linear codes with few weights have been constructed and extensively studied. In this paper, for an odd prime p, we determined the complete weight enumerator of two classes of p-ary linear codes constructed from defining set. Results show that the codes are at almost seven-weight linear codes and they may have applications in secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:It is known that the binary generalized Goppa codes are perfect codes for the weighted Hamming metrics. In this paper, we present the existence of a weighted Hamming metric that admits a binary Hamming code (resp. an extended binary Hamming code) to be perfect code. For a special weighted Hamming metric, we also give some structures of a 2-perfect code, show how to construct a 2-perfect linear code and obtain the weight distribution of a 2-perfect code from the partial information of the code.
