Abstract:In the present paper we study stability of recurrence equations (which in particular case contain dynamics of rational functions) generated by contractive functions defined on an arbitrary non-Archimedean algebra. Moreover, multirecurrence equations are considered. We also investigate reverse recurrence equations which have application in the study of p-adic Gibbs measures. Note that our results also provide the existence of unique solutions of nonlinear functional equations. We should stress that the non-Archimedeanity of the algebra is essentially used, therefore, the methods applied in the present paper are not valid in the Archimedean setting.

On the Recursive Behaviour of the Number of Irreducible Polynomials with Certain Properties over Finite Fields

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the field with $q$ elements and of characteristic $p$. For $a\in\mathbb{F}_p$ consider the set \begin{equation*} S_a(n)=\{f\in\mathbb{F}_q[x]\mid\operatorname{deg}(f)=n,~f\text{ irreducible, monic and} \operatorname{Tr}(f)=a\}. \end{equation*} In a recent paper, Robert Granger proved for $q=2$ and $n\ge 2$ that $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|= 0$ if $2\nmid n$ and $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|=|S_1(n/2)|$ if $2\mid n$. We will prove a generalization of this result for all finite fields. This is possible due to an observation about the size of certain subsets of monic irreducible polynomials arising in the context of a group action of subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ on monic polynomials. Additionally, it enables us to apply these methods to prove two further results that are very similar in nature.

Abstract:We give a dynamical construction of an infinite sequence of distinct totally $p$-adic algebraic numbers whose Weil heights tend to the limit $\frac{\log p}{p-1}$, thus giving a new proof of a result of Bombieri-Zannier. The proof is essentially equivalent to the explicit calculation of the Arakelov-Zhang pairing of the maps $\sigma(x)=x^2$ and $\phi_p(x)=\frac{1}{p}(x^p-x)$.

Abstract:In this article, we study the asymptotic solutions of the generalized Fermat-type equation of signature $(p,p,3)$ over totally real number fields $K$, i.e., $Ax^p+By^p=Cz^3$ with prime exponent $p$ and $A,B,C \in \mathcal{O}_K \setminus \{0\}$. For certain class of fields $K$, we prove that $Ax^p+By^p=Cz^3$ has no asymptotic solutions over $K$ (resp., solutions of certain type over $K$) with restrictions on $A,B,C$ (resp., for all $A,B,C \in \mathcal{O}_K \setminus \{0\}$). Finally, we present several local criteria over $K$.

On the $p$-adic valuation of third order linear recurrence sequences

Abstract:In a recent paper, Bilu et al. studied a conjecture of Marques and Lengyel on the $p$-adic valuation of the Tribonacci sequence. In this article, we study the $p$-adic valuation of third order linear recurrence sequences by considering a generalisation of the conjecture of Marques and Lengyel for third order linear recurrence sequences. Suppose that $(x_n)$ is a third order linear recurrence sequence whose characteristic polynomial has a root $\gamma$ such that $|\gamma|>1$. We show that if there exists a prime $p$ for which the conjecture holds for $(x_n)$, then the solution set of the Diophantine equation given by $x_n=m!$ in positive integers $n,m$ is finite. We also show that the solutions can be effectively computed when the form of the conjecture is explicitly known.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a totally real number field, and $ \mathcal{O}_K$ be the ring of integers of $K$. Abstract:We establish a recursive relation for the bipartition number $p_2(n)$ which might be regarded as an analogue of Euler's recursive relation for the partition number $p(n)$. Two proofs of the main result are proved in this article. The first one is using the generating function, and the second one is using combinatoric objects (called ``symbols'') created by Lusztig for studying representation theory of finite classical groups.

Abstract:Let E be an elliptic curve over Q with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field K. In 1991, by studying a certain special value of the Katz two-variable p-adic L-function lying outside the range of $p$-adic interpolation, K. Rubin formulated a p-adic variant of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture when $E(K)$ is infinite, and he proved that his conjecture is true for E(K) of rank one. When E(K) is finite, however, the statement of Rubin's original conjecture no longer applies, and the relevant special value of the appropriate $p$-adic L-function is equal to zero. In this paper we extend our earlier work and give an unconditional proof of an analogue of Rubin's conjecture when E(K) is finite.

Abstract:For any prime $p$ and real number and $\alpha$, the $p$-adic Littlewood Conjecture due to de Mathan and Teulié asserts that \[\inf_{|m|\ge1}|m|_p\cdot |m|\cdot |\left\langle\alpha m\right\rangle|=0.\] Above, $|m|$ is the usual absolute value, $|m|_p$ is the $p$-adic norm and $\left|\left\langle x\right\rangle\right|$ is the distance from $x\in\mathbb{R}$ to the nearest integer. Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $p(t)\in\mathbb{K}[t]$ be an irreducible polynomial. This paper deals with the analogue of this conjecture over the field of formal Laurent series over $\mathbb{K}$, known as the $p(t)$-adic Littlewood Conjecture ($p(t)$-LC). The following results are established: (1) Any counterexample to $p(t)$-LC for the case $p(t)=t$ generates a counterexample when $p(t)$ is any irreducible polynomial. Since Adiceam, Nesharim and Lunnon proved the $p(t)$-LC is false when $p(t)=t$ and $\mathbb{K}$ has characteristic three, one obtains a disproof of the $p(t)$-LC over any such field for any choice of irreducible polynomial $p(t)$. (2) A Khintchine-type theorem for $p(t)$-adic multiplicative approximation is established, enabling one to determine the measure of the set of counterexamples to $p(t)$-LC with an additional monotonic growth function. (3) The Hausdorff dimension of the same set is shown to be maximal when $p(t)=t$ in the critical case where the growth function is $\log^2$. These goals are achieved by developing an extensive theory in combinatorics relating $p(t)$-LC to the properties of the so-called number wall of a sequence. This is an infinite array containing the determinant of every finite Toeplitz matrix generated by that sequence. The main novelty of this paper is creating a dictionary allowing one to transfer statements in Diophantine approximation in positive characteristic to combinatorics through the concept of a number wall, and conversely.

On Classifying Extensions of $p$-adic Fields

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and let $\mathbb{Q}_p$ be the field of $p$-adic numbers. It is known that the finite extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of a given degree are finite up to isomorphism. Given a cubic field extension $L$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ generated by the root of an irreducible polynomial $h$, we present a practical (closed-form) method to determine the isomorphism class in which $L$ lives, based on the coefficients of $h$. We discuss the subtleties of the wildly ramified case, when the degree of the extension coincides with $p$, the characteristic of the residue field. We also present a method for tamely ramified extensions of arbitrary prime degree.

Abstract:Fix a prime number $p$ and let $E/F$ be a CM extension of number fields in which $p$ splits relatively. Let $\pi$ be an automorphic representation of a quasi-split unitary group of even rank with respect to $E/F$ such that $\pi$ is ordinary above $p$ with respect to the Siegel parabolic subgroup. We construct the cyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of $\pi$, and show, under certain conditions, that if its order of vanishing at the trivial character is $1$, then the rank of the Selmer group of the Galois representation of $E$ associated with $\pi$ is at least $1$. Furthermore, under a certain modularity hypothesis, we use special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties to construct some explicit elements in the Selmer group called Selmer theta lifts; and we prove a precise formula relating their $p$-adic heights to the derivative of the $p$-adic $L$-function. In parallel to Perrin-Riou's $p$-adic analogue of the Gross--Zagier formula, our formula is the $p$-adic analogue of the arithmetic inner product formula recently established by Chao~Li and the second author.

Abstract:Let $N$ and $p$ be primes $\geq 5$ such that $p \mid \mid N-1$. In this situation, Mazur defined and studied the $p$-Eisenstein quotient $\tilde{J}^{(p)}$ of $J_0(N)$. We prove a kind of modulo $p$ version of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the ``$p$-Eisenstein part'' of even quadratic twists of $\tilde{J}^{(p)}$. Our result is the analogue for even quadratic twists of a result of Mazur concerning odd quadratic twists.

Abstract:We give conditions under which the number of solutions of a system of polynomial equations over a finite field F_q of characteristic p is divisible by p. Our setup involves the substitution t_i |-> f_i(t_i) for auxiliary polynomials f_1,...,f_n in F_q[t]. We recover as special cases results of Chevalley-Warning and Morlaye-Joly. Then we investigate higher p-adic divisibilities, proving a result that recovers the Ax-Katz Theorem. We also consider p-weight degrees, recovering work of Moreno-Moreno, Moreno-Castro and Castro-Castro-Velez.

Abstract:We introduce an analog of part of the Langlands-Shahidi method to the p-adic setting, constructing reciprocals of certain p-adic L-functions using the nonconstant terms of the Fourier expansions of Eisenstein series. We carry out the method for the group SL(2), and give explicit p-adic measures whose Mellin transforms are reciprocals of Dirichlet L-functions.

Abstract:In this article, we show that the quartic Diophantine equations $x^4 \pm pqy^4=\pm z^2$ and $ x^4 \pm pq y^4= \pm iz^2$ have only trivial solutions for some primes $p$ and $q$ satisfying conditions $ p \equiv 3 \pmod 8, ~ q \equiv 1 \pmod 8 ~\text{and}~ \displaystyle\legendre{p}{q} = -1$. Here we have found the torsion of the two families of elliptic curves to find the solutions of given Diophantine equations. Moreover, we also calculate the rank of these two families of elliptic curves over the Gaussian field $\mathbb{Q}(i)$.
