Abstract:AbstractElectro-optic (E-O) polymers have drawn great interest in recent years because of their potential applications in photonics devices such as high speed modulators and switches, optical data storage and information processing1–2. In order to have suitable materials for device fabrication, it is essential to design and develop polymeric material systems (active and passive polymers) with matched refractive indices, large E-O coefficients, good temporal and photochemical stability3–8 The E-O response of an active polymer commonly arises from the electric field induced alignment of its second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore, either doped as a guest/host system or covalently bonded as a side-chain. Because of the strong interaction among the electric dipoles, the poled structure is in a meta-stable state; the poled NLO chromophores which possess large dipole moment will tend to relax back to the randomly oriented state. As a result, the stability of the poled structure strongly depends on the rigidity of the overall material system. As it might be expected, the continuous increases of the rigidity and Tg of poled polymers imposes constraints on the selection of suitable chromophores that can survive the hightemperature poling and processing conditions. To circumvent this problem, we have developed a series of chromophores that possess conformation-locked geometry and perfluoro-dicyanovinylsubstituted electron-accepting group which demonstrate both good thermal stabilty and nonlinearity. This paper provides a brief review of these highly efficient and thermally stable chromophores and polymers for device applications.

Abstract:As an organic optical fiber with a diameter comparable to or less than the wavelength of light, polymer nanofibers have been attracting increasing attention as a platform for manipulating light at the nanoscale. A variety of applications for polymer optical nanofibers, including waveguides, light sources and sensors, have been reported in recent years. In this article, the recent progress in the field of polymer optical nanofibers is reviewed in terms of their fabrication, characterization and applications. In particular, we focus on functionalized polymer nanofibers doped with functional materials, such as dye molecules, noble metal nanoparticles, quantum dots and rare earth ions, which greatly expand their capabilities of generating, propagating, converting and modulating light at the nanoscale.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Polymers have become one of the major types of materials that are essential in our daily life. The controlled synthesis of value-added polymers with unique mechanical and chemical properties have attracted broad research interest. Metal–organic framework (MOF) is a class of porous material with immense structural diversity which offers unique advantages for catalyzing polymerization and oligomerization reactions including the uniformity of the catalytic active site, and the templating effect of the nano-sized channels. We summarized in this review the important recent progress in the field of MOF-catalyzed and MOF-templated polymerizations, to reveal the chemical principle and structural aspects of these systems and hope to inspire the future design of novel polymerization systems with improved activity and specificity.

Abstract:This review comprehensively addresses the developments and applications of polymer materials in optoelectronics. Especially, this review introduces how the materials absorb, emit, and transfer charges, including the exciton-vibrational coupling, nonradiative and radiative processes, Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), and energy dynamics. Furthermore, it outlines charge trapping and recombination in the materials and draws the corresponding practical implications. The following section focuses on the practical application of organic materials in optoelectronics devices and highlights the detailed structure, operational principle, and performance metrics of organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic photodetectors, and organic transistors in detail. Finally, this study underscores the transformative impact of organic materials on the evolution of optoelectronics, providing a comprehensive understanding of their properties, mechanisms, and diverse applications that contribute to advancing innovative technologies in the field.

Abstract:The construction of complex polymer architectures with well-defined topology, composition and functionality has been extensively explored as the molecular basis for the development of modern polymer materials. The unique reaction kinetics of free-radical polymerization leads to the concurrent formation of crosslinks between polymer chains and rings within an individual chain and, thus, free-radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers provides a facile method to manipulate chain topology and functionality. Regulating the relative contribution of these intermolecular and intramolecular chain-propagation reactions is the key to the construction of architecturally complex polymers. This can be achieved through the design of new monomers or by spatially or kinetically controlling crosslinking reactions. These mechanisms enable the synthesis of various polymer architectures, including linear, cyclized, branched and star polymer chains, as well as crosslinked networks. In this Review, we highlight some of the contemporary experimental strategies to prepare complex polymer architectures using radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers. We also examine the recent development of characterization techniques for sub-chain connections in such complex macromolecules. Finally, we discuss how these crosslinking reactions have been engineered to generate advanced polymer materials for use in a variety of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Optoelectronic polymers possess delocalized π electron skeletons that enable various optoelectronic properties and applications. As a frontier research directions of polymer science, optoelectronic polymers have attracted wide attention because of their fascinating properties such as low-cost synthesis, light-weight and easy manufacture of thin film devices by solution cast or printing technologies. These features have endowed optoelectronic polymers with great potential applications in the field of organic optoelectronic devices, and also have motivated chemists to construct a variety of optoelectronic polymers. This review article aims to summarize the important research progresses of optoelectronic polymers in China, including the molecular engineering, novel and controllable polymerization, regulation on properties, various aplications and theoretic studies of optoelectronic conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Stepwise photopolymerization is a miraculous strategy modulating the polymer skeleton and electro-optical properties of light modulators based on liquid crystal/polymer composites. However, owing to the indistinct polymerization mechanism and curing condition discrepancy, the required polymer structures and electro-optical properties are hard to be controlled precisely. Herein, a novel polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film based on acrylate/epoxy resin is proposed, fabricated and the relationships between preparation process, polymer content, polymer morphology and electro-optical properties are studied. The in-situ photopolymerization of acrylate/epoxy resin liquid crystalline polymer is fulfilled using cation photo-initiator UV 6976. The distinct photopolymerization speed between acrylate and epoxy resin benefits the polymer morphology control, and with accurate containment of the polymerization process and polymer composition, the superior electro-optical properties at a higher polymer content are acquired. The polymer morphology and electro-optical properties are influenced by the polymer content and mass ratio between acrylate and epoxy resin. The best electro-optical properties among samples are attained by controlling the mass ratio between acrylate and epoxy resin to 1:1, integrating higher densities of scattering centers and lower anchoring effect. With higher polymer content, the strategy of increasing the mass ratio of E6M benefits the improvement of E-O properties for alleviating polymer density. This work provides insights to stepwise polymerization of liquid crystalline monomers and offers a fancy strategy for the preparation of novel liquid crystal dimming films.

Recent Advance of Diazo Compounds in Polymer Synthesis

Abstract:Based on the well development of diazo compound transformations in organic synthesis, it is expected to extend its applications to the field of polymer synthesis. It is of vital importance to transform efficient organic reactions of diazo compounds into new polymerization methodology in order to afford polymers with new structures and functions. Currently, there is still great development potential in the application of diazo compounds in polymer synthesis. This review highlights the recent advancements of polymer synthesis chemistry with diazo compounds, including chain-growth polymerization, step-growth polymerization, end-group functionalization and post-polymerization modification. Transition-metal-catalyzed chain-growth polymerization of diazoacetates constructs C-C main chain from one carbon unit. Through the development of catalytic diazoacetate polymerization, the synthesis of high molecular weight polymers, stereocontrol polymerization and living/controlled polymerization can be realized successively. The stepwise polymerization of diazo compounds originated from their efficient organic conversions. The insertion reaction of diazo compounds into O-H and N-H bonds can be extended to stepwise polymerization to afford polyethers, polyesters and polyamines that are not easily accessible through other synthetic methods, while cross-coupling polymerization of diazo compounds via metal carbene insertion-migration mechanism can realize the synthesis of polymers with novel structures. Diazoacetates and diazomalonates can be employed to regulate the terminal structures of polymers synthesized through metal-catalyzed vinyl addition polymerization or ring-opening metathesis polymerization of olefins, and successively end-capped by metal carbene. The post-polymerization modifications based on diazo compounds can be applied to the introduction of polar functional groups into polyolefin. Compared to the copolymerization of polar olefins, the post-polymerization functionalization strategy avoids the depressed reactivity of varied monomers, and can be applicable to a broad scope of functional groups. The thermal and mechanical properties of polymers can be improved by this method. Finally, the future challenges in expanding the approaches on polymer chemistry of diazo compounds are prospected in this review.

Abstract:Polymorphism of organic semiconducting materials exerts critical effects on their physical properties such as optical absorption, emission and electrical conductivity, and provides an excellent platform for investigating structure-property relations. It is, however, challenging to efficiently tune the polymorphism of conjugated polymers in aggregated, semi-crystalline phases due to their conformational freedom and anisotropic nature. Here, two distinctly different semi-crystalline polymorphs (β1 and β2) of a low-bandgap diketopyrrolopyrrole polymer are formed through controlling the solvent quality, as evidenced by spectroscopic, structural, thermal and charge transport studies. Compared to β1, the β2 polymorph exhibits a lower optical band gap, an enhanced photoluminescence, a reduced π-stacking distance, a higher hole mobility in field-effect transistors and improved photocurrent generation in polymer solar cells. The β1 and β2 polymorphs provide insights into the control of polymer self-organization for plastic electronics and hold potential for developing programmable ink formulations for next-generation electronic devices.

Abstract:Polymersemiconductors composed of a carbon-based pi conjugatedbackbone have been studied for several decades as active layers ofmultifarious organic electronic devices. They combine the advantagesof the electrical conductivity of metals and semiconductors and themechanical behavior of plastics, which are going to become one ofthe futures of modulable electronic materials. The performance ofconjugated materials depends both on their chemical structures andthe multilevel microstructures in solid states. Despite the greatefforts that have been made, they are still far from producing a clearpicture among intrinsic molecular structures, microstructures, anddevice performances. This review summarizes the development of polymersemiconductors in recent decades from the aspects of material designand the related synthetic strategies, multilevel microstructures,processing technologies, and functional applications. The multilevelmicrostructures of polymer semiconductors are especially emphasized,which plays a decisive role in determining the device performance.The discussion shows the panorama of polymer semiconductors researchand sets up a bridge across chemical structures, microstructures,and finally devices performances. Finally, this review discusses thegrand challenges and future opportunities for the research and developmentof polymer semiconductors.

Abstract:Owing to the limitation of optical fiber materials and conventional fabrication methods, the development of optical fiber devices has encountered a bottleneck. Recently, two-photon polymerization technology is attracting increasing research interest due to its superiorities of high precision, flexibility and diversity of polymer materials. The optical fiber integrated micro-/nanostructures induced by two-photon polymerization have become a research hotspot due to the great application expansion of optical fiber device. In this paper, we review the research progress in the field of optical fiber integrated micro-/nanostructures induced by two-photon polymerization in the last 10 years, which are classified by micro-optics, optical waveguide device and optical micro-cavity. Furthermore, we briefly discussed the future prospects of this exciting research field.

Abstract:Lanthanide (Ln 3+ ) complexes with organic ligands have recently gained extensive attention due to their unique optical features such as high color purity, narrow and intense emission bands and long excited state lifetimes, showing diverse applications in tunable lasers, optical amplifiers, biomedical diagnosis, high density information storage and so on. However, some inherent shortcomings, such as poor stability (photo-, thermal- and mechanical), low processability and the tendency to aggregate significantly, limit their full exploitation in practical applications. Incorporating of Ln 3+ complexes into polymers matrices are effective means to improve their properties and broaden their applications. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in Ln 3+ complexes-containing polymers, varying from structural evolution of ligand molecules and polymers to application expansion of luminescent functional polymers. This review will systematically summarize the key points in the synthesis methods (including both physical doping and chemical cross-linking) of Ln 3+ complexes-containing polymers. The critical strategies to prepare self-healing luminescent polymers will be discussed in detail. We then review the emerging applications of Ln 3+ complexes-containing polymers ranging from light-conversion films, organic light-emitting diodes, bio-imaging to temperature sensing applications. At the end of this review, we will provide an outlook on the opportunities and challenges of Ln 3+ complexes-containing polymers.

Abstract:The organic-inorganic hybrid fluorescent hyperbranched polymer, including hyperbranched polysiloxane and hyperbranched polyborate, have attracted much attention due to their excellent optical properties and wide range of applications. Hyperbranched polysiloxane and polyborates, prepared by introducing Si or B elements into organic polymer chains at the molecular level through rational molecular design and novel synthesis methods, exhibit outstanding photophysical properties as an indispensable branch of organic-inorganic hybrid fluorescent materials. Herein, this review article highlights the recent research progress on hyperbranched polysiloxanes and hyperbranched polyborates, including strategies for regulating their emission wavelengths, quantum yields, and fluorescence lifetimes, potential emission mechanisms, and various applications. Finally, some challenges and promising future directions in the field of organic-inorganic hybrid fluorescent polymers are summarized.

Abstract:The past four decades have witnessed the dynamism of polymer semiconductors in organic electronics, from incipient polyacetylene to current donor−acceptor polymers. In order to further promote the development of organic semiconductors, novel semiconducting polymers were continuously synthesized and new synthetic strategies were constantly explored. Recently, owing to the excellent planarity and structural tunability of diarylethylenes, semiconducting polymers based on diarylethylene units have been considered as a class of promising semiconductor materials and extensively studied. Many efforts have been made to develop various diarylethylene units, which were used to synthesize many high-performance polymeric materials. This review summarizes the synthetic strategies of diarylethylenes and their polymers. Furthermore, molecular engineering of diarylethylene units on semiconducting polymers are introduced in detail, focusing on the effect of various structural modifications on the physicochemical and optoelectronic properties. The applications of these polymers in electronic devices are discussed, including organic field-effect transistors, organic photovoltaics, organic electrochemical transistors, organic thermoelectrics, organic spin valves, and so forth. In the end, the challenges encountered and the future outlook in this field are highlighted.

Abstract:Morphologies of polymer networks are playing a key role in affecting the electro-optical (E-O) properties of a polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) material. In this paper, the relationships between the polymer morphologies and the E-O properties of PDLCs are investigated in an unexplored thermally curing system based on epoxy/low-molar-mass-mercaptan. The polymer morphologies in this curing system can be regulated from polymer beads to porous polymer matrix by varying the liquid crystals (LCs) contents, chemical structures of epoxy monomers, and functionality of thiol hardeners. Interestingly, great improvements of E-O properties occur as the polymer structures change from polymer beads to porous frameworks, even though with an abnormal low LCs contents. Eventually, the mechanism for the formation of different polymer structures are illustrated and the relationships between the E-O properties and polymer structures are established. This work provides new insights in morphology control and optimizing the E-O properties in thermally cured PDLCs films.
