Abstract:Since 2020, with the global spread of major respiratory infectious diseases, such as COVID–19, the demand and consumption of personal protective equipment, such as masks, have increased dramatically worldwide. The environmental pollution caused by numerous waste disposable face masks has gradually attracted people’s attention. In this study, the mechanical properties of mask–chip–reinforced soil are evaluated from a new perspective, through the uniaxial, biaxial, conventional triaxial, and true triaxial compression tests on reshaped sandy soil samples mixed with different contents of mask chips. The experimental results show that the mechanical properties of the sandy soil can be improved by the mask chips. With the proper content of mask chips, the failure strength is substantially improved, and the failure of soil is delayed. Meanwhile, the strength and stiffness are significantly affected by the stress path and the content of mask chips, even if the soil samples with the same mask–chip content can also show different mechanical properties under different stress paths. Additionally, the mechanical properties of soil are not necessarily improved constantly with the increasing content of mask chips. The failure strength of sandy soil samples under conventional and true triaxial stress paths decreases when the mass content of mask chips exceeds 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively. This study confirms the potential of mask chips applied to subgrade, slope, and other engineering construction fields in a sustainable way.

Abstract:In response to the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), a staggering amount of personal protective equipment, such as disposable face masks, has been used, leading to the urgent environmental issue. This study evaluates the feasibility of mask chips for the soil reinforcement, through triaxial tests on samples mixed with complete decomposed granite (CDG) and mask chips (0%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 1%, 5% by volume). The experimental results show that adding a moderate volumetric amount of mask chips (0.3%–1%) improves the soil strength, especially under high confining pressure. The optimum volumetric content of mask chips obtained by this study is 0.5%, raising the peak shear strength up to 22.3% under the confining stress of 120 kPa. When the volumetric content of mask chips exceeds the optimum value, the peak shear strength decreases accordingly. A limited amount of mask chips also increases the elastic modulus and makes the volumetric response more dilative. By contrast, excessive mask chips create additional voids and shift the strong soil-mask contacts to weak mask-mask contacts. The laser scanning microscope (LSM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images on the typical samples demonstrate the microstructure of mask fibers interlocking with soil particles, highly supporting the macro-scale mechanical behavior.

Study on Mechanical Properties of Deep Expansive Soil and Coupling Damage Model of Freeze–Thaw Action and Loading

Abstract:This study is primarily intended to present a damage constitutive equation under the combined action of confining pressures and freeze–thaw cycles by subjecting deep expansive clay to the consolidated undrained triaxial tests. We study the influence of the numbers of freeze–thaw cycles on various mechanical indexes of soil by using the TSZ-2 instrument (fully automatic triaxial instrument). As the number of freeze–thaw cycles increases, the ultimate peak stress of the soil decreases, and then, the effect of the freeze–thaw effect on the shear strength gradually weakened. By combining the expression method of the damage variable under the action of loading alone with the expression method under the action of freeze–thaw cycles alone, we brought in the damage evolution equation to obtain the damage constitutive equation under the combined action of confining pressures and freeze–thaw cycles. The stress values under three confining pressures (100 kPa, 200 kPa, and 300 kPa) can be determined by using the final damage constitutive model. The measured data with a water content of 17% and six freeze–thaw cycles were compared with the theoretical data. The actual strength values were 118.4 kPa, 152.3 kPa, and 184.1 kPa, and the theoretical strength values were 120 kPa, 150 kPa, and 186 kPa. The fitting degree of the strength value was as high as 99%, which verifies the feasibility of this model. This study can serve as an available reference for well wall construction and disaster prediction in deep coal mining.

Abstract:The use of disposable masks, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to an increased focus on sustainable disposal and recycling methods. This study investigates the feasibility of integrating shredded mask materials into granular soils to enhance their mechanical properties for engineering applications. After validating the selection of Discrete Element Method (DEM) contact parameters through the conducted physical experiments, a comprehensive series of DEM simulations was performed to explore the effects of various mask contents on the mechanical behavior of sand-mask chip mixtures (e.g., soil's strength and dilatancy) under different confining pressures. Additionally, the study analyzed the potential of mask chips in improving soil fabric, reducing contact force concentrations under shearing, and contributing to the soil's stability. The results suggest that waste face masks could serve as a valuable resource for soil stabilization. This not only provides a viable solution for mask waste management but also introduces a novel, eco-friendly material that could improve the engineering properties of granular soils. The findings underscore the importance of understanding the interaction between waste masks and soil and open new pathways for the recycling of non-biodegradable waste in geotechnical applications.

Abstract:The outbreak and spread of the new coronavirus epidemic has caused a large number of using masks, which leads to a huge amount of discarded masks that may have serious effects on the ecological environment. To further verify the feasibility of the discarded masks for soil reinforcement and quantify its reinforcing effects, the tensile property tests of masks, the triaxial tests of mask fiber reinforced soil and the scanning electron microscope tests were carried out. The test results showed that the tensile strength of the discarded mask was about 15% lower than that of the new mask. Mask fiber reinforcement could improve the shear strength of clay and effectively restrain the bulging deformation of the soil specimen. At the optimum fiber content of 0.1%, the peak deviatoric stress was increased by around 20%. The reinforcing effect of discarded mask fibers for the same type of soil reached approximately 85% of that reinforced by polypropylene fibers. At a certain fiber content, the shear strength of the soil specimen was relatively high when the water content was low. The soil specimen showed a characteristic of brittle failure. With increasing water content, the shear strength of the soil specimen decreased and the plasticity gradually increased. It could be seen from the SEM images that the bonding and friction between the fibers and soil particles as well as the constraint behavior caused by the fiber webs were the main reasons for the strength improvement of the soil specimens. However, the reinforcing effect of polypropylene fiber was better because of its uniform distribution in the soil. The investigation results of this study can provide guidance for the application of discarded masks in geotechnical engineering.

Abstract:Incorporating masks into building materials offers a potential solution to the environmental threat of disposable masks with promising material performance. However, research on their dynamic properties is lacking to further determine the application range of the new composite. This study addresses this gap by shredding face masks into strips and incorporating them into mortars at varying volume ratios. The integrity and compactness of the mortar was measured and characterized by P-wave velocity, while dynamic compression properties were explored using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system. Subsequently, sieve analysis was conducted on the fractured specimens. The results indicate that incorporating masks generally improves the mortar integrity and the fragmentation after impacting. The dynamic uniaxial compression strength (DUCS) decreased for all mixing designs compared to plain ones under a constant loading rate. Meanwhile, the dissipated energy density showed a similar trend to the P-wave velocity, exhibiting less pronounced enhancement at higher loading rates. According to the dynamic characteristics, a dynamic constitutive model based on the Lemaitre principle and Weibull distribution of damage is developed and validated. The test results are further understood through the perspective of the mechanism of mask inclusion.

Abstract:Expansive soil has a significant impact on the stability of many key construction projects in cold regions. To study the physical and mechanical properties of expanded soil under the condition of freeze-thaw cycle, cryogenic cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on the dynamic and the displacement characteristics of geosynthetic-reinforced expansive soil subjected to the freeze-thaw cycles. Compared with the unreinforced expansive soil samples, the effects of freeze-thaw cycles on the soil dynamics were discussed. The dynamic shear modulus (Gd) and damping ratio (λ) of the expansive soil samples are improved by reinforcement. Reinforced soil can inhibit the axial compression of the sample and restrain the frost heave deformation of the sample during the freezing process. Meanwhile, it can delay the structural damage effect caused by frost heave and reduce the rate of change of the Gd and the λ with the freeze-thaw cycle. At the same time, reinforced soil can inhibit the axial expansion, reduce the rate of reduction of the Gd, stabilize it with a higher rate, and reduce the influence of the freeze-thaw cycles on the λ of the expansive soil sample. Finally, the change of mechanical properties of expansive soil under the condition of reinforcement is obtained. The main conclusions of this paper can be used to reinforce the roadbed and foundation engineering of frozen soil in a cold region and provide support for the fiber reinforcement method of expansive soil.

Comparative study on mechanical performance of silty soil and expansive soil below canal structures in cold regions

Abstract:Silty soil was widely used as filling soil materials for the replacement of expansive soil in cold regions. This paper presents a straightforward approach for the effects of wetting-drying-freezing-thawing cycles on mechanical behaviors of silty soil and expansive soil by laboratory tests. The results showed that the silty soil and expansive soil after 7th wetting-drying-freezing-thawing cycles presented the decreases of elastic modulus, failure strength, cohesion and angel of internal friction by 8.9 %∼12.0 %, 7.7 %∼9.0 %, 7.9 %, 4.5 % and 17.6 %∼37.0 %, 20.5 %∼29.4 %, 43.2 %, 13.0 %, respectively, indicating that wetting-drying-freezing-thawing cycles had little impact on mechanical property of silty soil and a great influence on that of expansive soil. Among them, the mechanical property attenuation ratio in the first three wetting-drying-freezing-thawing cycles accounted for over 90 % of the total. In the meantime, the micro-structure damage, surface crack characteristics and grain size distribution variations of expansive soil were all more significantly than these of silty soil exposed to wetting-drying-freezing-thawing cycles, which brought insight into the causes of the differences in mechanical properties for silty soil and expansive soil. It is found that the silty soil properties were more stable than expansive soil properties, and the silty soil is very effective for replacing the expansive soil below canal structures in cold regions.

Abstract:In cold regions, the extensive distribution of silt exhibits limited applicability in engineering under freeze–thaw cycles. To address this issue, this study employed rice husk carbon and calcium lignosulfonate to stabilize silt from cold areas. The mechanical properties of the stabilized silt under freeze–thaw conditions were evaluated through unconfined compressive strength tests and triaxial shear tests. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy was utilized to analyze the mechanisms behind the stabilization. Ultimately, a damage model for rice husk carbon–calcium lignosulfonate stabilized silt was constructed based on the Weibull distribution function and Lemaitre's principle of equivalent strain. The findings indicate that as the content of rice husk carbon and calcium lignosulfonate increases, the rate of improvement in the compressive strength of the stabilized silt progressively accelerates. With an increase in the number of freeze–thaw cycles, the deviatoric stress of the stabilized soil gradually diminishes; the decline in peak deviatoric stress becomes more gradual, while the reduction in cohesion intensifies. The decrease in the angle of internal friction is relatively minor. Microscopic examinations reveal that as the number of freeze–thaw cycles increases, the soil pores tend to enlarge and multiply. The established damage model for stabilized silt under freeze–thaw cycles and applied loads demonstrates a similar pattern between the experimental and theoretical curves under four different confining pressures, reflecting an initial rapid increase followed by a steady trend. Thus, it is evident that the damage model for stabilized silt under freeze–thaw conditions outperforms traditional constitutive models, offering a more accurate depiction of the experimental variations observed.

Abstract:The application of disposable face mask fibers in the enhancement of the mechanical properties of cement-stabilized soils is rigorously examined in this study through performing several triaxial tests on fiber-reinforced sand-cement mixtures with varying contents of additives under different confining pressures. To this end, sand samples stabilized with different percentages of cement (4% and 8%) are reinforced with various contents of face mask fibers (0%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75%). After seven days of curing, the fiber-reinforced stabilized specimens are subjected to a comprehensive series of consolidated drained ( CD ) triaxial tests with all-round pressures of 50, 100 and 200 kPa. The results generally show that the addition of mask fibers to sand-cement mixtures up to 0.25% increases their ultimate strengths; whereas further increase of fiber content is observed to have an adverse impact on the strength parameters of the composite. Therefore, 0.25% mask fiber inclusion is reported to be the optimum content, which constitutes maximum strength characteristics of the samples. The contribution of mask fiber addition to the variation of ultimate strength of stabilized mixtures is noticed to be more pronounced in the samples with higher cement contents under greater isotropic confining pressures. Moreover, with increasing the percentage of mask fibers, the failure strain of all stabilized samples increases, thus exhibiting more ductile behavior. Unlike for the samples containing relatively low cement contents (4% herein) where brittleness index is barely affected by the mask fiber content, this parameter significantly decreases with the fiber inclusion for the specimens stabilized with relatively high cement contents (8% herein). Secant modulus is also observed to experience a decreasing trend with the addition of mask fibers to the mixture; the trend which is more pronounced for samples containing higher cement contents. Finally, the internal friction angle and cohesion of cement-stabilized samples generally show increasing trends with the addition of mask fibers up to 0.25% and then reveal decrement. Overall, the combination of cementation and fiber reinforcement demonstrates a significant synergistic effect, resulting in notable improvements in the mechanical properties of fine sands.

Abstract:When frozen soil serves as the foundation of engineering facilities in cold regions, it often suffers from the combined action of freeze–thaw cycles (FTC) and impact loading, which changes its stability and reliability. This study analyzed frozen soil by conducting FTC experiments with varying FTC numbers and impact loading experiments under varying strain rates. The experimental results revealed that frozen soil exhibited FTC and strain rate effects. The peak stress of frozen soil gradually weakened with a decrease in the strain rate and an increase in the FTC number. The expansion stress caused by the water–ice phase transition during an FTC was investigated, assuming that the expansion stress was comparable to the cyclic load, and the deterioration mechanism of frozen soil under the FTC action was discussed. An expression of FTC damage was derived using thermodynamic and continuous damage mechanical principles. A finite element model of frozen soil, derived from the cohesive zone model, was established by inserting cohesive elements into the common surfaces between solid soil elements. A traditional traction–separation (T–S) model for cohesive elements was improved by considering the influence of the strain rate using the overstress model. An elastic–plastic model was used to model the solid elements. The improved T–S model and elastic–plastic constitutive law were used to implement a numerical simulation via a user subroutine VUMAT integrated in ABAQUS/Explicit. When the FTC damage was considered, the microcrack evolution and impact mechanical behavior of frozen soil under impact loading after experiencing FTC action were observed. Having compared the numerical results with the experimental data, it is concluded that a good experimental–numerical correlation was obtained.

A Study of Mechanical Test Methods of Frozen Soil

Abstract:Mechanical tests of frozen soil are essentially a process to obtain the physical and mechanical parameters of frozen soil for engineering design in cold regions and the model parameters in constitutive model of frozen soil.Along with the deepening of research,mechanical behaviors of frozen soil under different loading paths,which are effective approach to verify the existing models,should be investigated more.Thus,precise mechanical tests are fundamental mean to cognize the mechanical properties of frozen soil.For further examining the mechanical properties of frozen soil and increasing the accuracy of mechanical tests,two isotropic consolidation tests and two triaxial shear loading-unloading tests are conducted by using MTS-810 Triaxial Material Test Machine at low temperature.According to the test results,scope of application of the test method is analyzed.A testing program is proposed using the test machine for shear test with constant net mean stress,which is able to examine the effect of equivalent shearing stress on volumetric deformation of frozen soil.

Reuse of COVID-19 face mask for the amelioration of mechanical properties of fat clay: A novel solution to an emerging waste problem

Abstract:Not only has the COVID-19 pandemic caused a global health crisis, but it has also changed the dynamics of waste generation around the world. This situation demands a productive solution for face mask (FM) waste management to solve several associated environmental issues. In the current study, a novel soil treatment method is proposed for the improvement of mechanical characteristics of fat clay by using FM as fiber reinforcement and silica fume (SF) as the cementitious agent in the form of a composite binary admixture (CBA). The performance of the proposed CBA is compared with SF and FM as the lone stabilizers by conducting extensive geotechnical testing. The SF treatment exponentially improves the strength characteristics of soil but it marginalizes the ductility of soil, inviting sudden failure and instability under dynamic loadings. It is observed that the proposed CBA not only improves the strength characteristics more than SF but also regulates the ductility and deformability of treated soil due to the presence of FM fibers. In addition, the policies and protocols on the logistics of collecting FM waste and making it ready for the proposed geotechnical application are reviewed; associated health risks, socioeconomic conditions and available technologies are the major governing factors to formulate and implement these policies. Moreover, the prolonged storage of COVID-19 FM waste for disinfection is found to be suitable for the proposed soil stabilization method as per the literature. The current study helps in achieving cost-effective filler/foundation material, solving COVID-19 FM waste problems and promoting resource conservation.

Abstract:The shear characteristics of the soil-geosynthetic interface are the primary factors affecting the load transmission rules. The interfacial shear parameters are affected by cycles of freeze-thaw and alter as a result of the periodic temperature fluctuations. Using an enhanced temperature-controlled direct shear apparatus, this paper investigates the interfacial shear characteristics between silty clay and composite geotextile according to freeze-thaw cycles. Analysis is done on how the interfacial stress-strain relationship, strength, and strength characteristics are affected by the soil moisture content, normal pressure, and test temperature. The results demonstrate that at low freezing temperatures and high moisture contents, the interfacial stress-strain curve is strongly influenced by cycles of freeze-thaw, and that the interfacial shear strength tends to grow initially before decreasing as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increases. The variations in interfacial shear strength correlate to the changes in interfacial friction angle and interfacial cohesion, and the primary element influencing the variation of shear strength is the alteration in interfacial cohesion. With a high soil moisture content initially, the migrating water has greater effect on shear strength during the freeze-thaw cycle. The findings of the significant level research indicate that the moisture content has a significant influence on the shear strength.

You can register here The investigation into the complex mechanical properties of frozen calcareous clay under multifactor interaction holds significant importance for the reliability and durability of engineering in cold regions. This study investigates the strength properties of frozen calcareous clay under different interaction levels by designing a four-factor, four-level orthogonal test that incorporates temperature, confining pressure, dry density, and water content. The study aimed to assess the sensitivity of each factor to failure stress, and establish an intrinsic model based on the Duncan-Chang model considering temperature, confining pressure, and water content. The results indicated that the stressstrain curves exhibit strain-hardening characteristics across various interaction levels. These curves can be divided into elastic and elastic-plastic phases, with the slope of the elastic phase and the stress value at the inflection point increasing with decreasing temperature and increasing confining pressure. When the confining pressure is maintained constant, the failure stress is negatively correlated with temperature. When the temperature is maintained constant, the failure stress is positively correlated with confining pressure. Sensitivity analysis shows that the influence of each factor on failure stress is as follows: temperature > confining pressure > dry density > water content. Additionally, the influence of temperature and confining pressure on failure stress is markedly greater than that of water content and dry density. The evolution of unfrozen water content follows three stages: sharp reduction, rapid reduction, and slow reduction. Verification against experimental data confirmed that the modified constitutive model effectively reflects the stress-strain relationship of frozen calcareous clay under the interaction of multiple factors.

Abstract:This paper is grounded on the following information: (1) Disposable masks primarily consist of polypropylene fiber, which exhibits excellent flexibility. (2) China has extensive coal gangue deposits that pose a significant environmental hazard. (3) Coal gangue concrete exhibits greater fragility compared to regular concrete and demonstrates reduced resistance to deformation. With the consideration of environmental conservation and resource reutilization, a preliminary concept suggests the conversion of discarded masks into fibers, which can be blended with coal gangue concrete to enhance its mechanical characteristics. In this paper, the stress–strain law of different mask fiber–doped coal gangue concrete (DMGC) under uniaxial compression is studied when the matrix strength is C20 and C30, and the effect of mask fiber content on the mechanical behavior and energy conversion relationship of coal gangue concrete is analyzed. The experimental results show that when the content of mask fiber is less than 1.5%, the strength, elastic modulus, deformation resistance, and energy dissipation of the concrete increase with mask fiber content. When the amount of mask fiber is more than 1.5%, because the tensile capacity and energy dissipation level of concrete produced by the mask fiber cannot compensate for the compression and deformation resistance of concrete of the same quantity and because excess fiber is difficult to evenly mix in the concrete, there are pore defects in concrete, which decreases the concrete strength due to the increase in mask fiber. Therefore, adding less than 1.5% mask fiber helps to improve the ductility, toughness, impermeability, and oxidation and control the cracking of coal gangue concrete. Based on Weibull theory, a constitutive model of DMGC is established, which fits well with the results of a uniaxial test, providing support for understanding the mechanical law of mask fiber–doped concrete.

Abstract:With the development of cold region engineering, it is crucial to study the mechanical properties of frozen soil. In practice, frozen soil is inevitably subject to impact loading, making the study of frozen soil under impact loading necessary for engineering in cold regions. The split–Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) is an important experimental means for obtaining the dynamic performance of materials. In this study, an SHPB experiment was conducted on frozen soil under confining pressure. The frozen soil exhibited an evident strain rate effect and temperature effect under confining pressure. The SHPB experiment on frozen soil under confining pressure was simulated numerically using LS-DYNA software and the Holmquist–Johnson–Cook (HJC) material model. A loading simulation with passive confining pressure and active confining pressure was completed by adding an aluminum sleeve and applying a constant load. The simulation results obtained using the above methods were in good agreement with the experimental results. The strength of the frozen soil under confining pressure was greater than that of the uniaxial impact, and there was an evident confining pressure effect. Furthermore, the confining pressure provided by passive confinement was larger than that provided by active confinement. The passive confining pressure energy absorption efficiency was higher than for the active confining pressure due to the need to absorb more energy under the same damage conditions. The frozen soil exhibited viscoplastic failure characteristics under confining pressure.

Abstract:Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a sudden surge in the production and utilization of disposable, single-use facial masks has been observed. Delinquency in proper disposal of used facial masks endangers the environment with a new form of non-biodegradable plastic waste that will take hundreds of years to break down. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the resourceful recycling of such waste in an environmentally friendly way. This study presents an efficient solution by using waste masks in fibered or crushed form to produce environmentally friendly and affordable green concrete. This investigation assessed the mechanical and durability properties of waste masks-incorporated concrete. A total of six mixes were prepared for standardized tests to determine compressive strength, split cylinder tensile strength and rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT), and freeze-thaw resistance. The percentage of mask fibers used were 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2% of concrete by volume, while crushed masks were used at 0.5% only. The mask waste in both forms was found suitable to be used in concrete. One percent of waste mask fibers was found as an optimum value to increase compressive and tensile strength, reduce chloride permeability, and increase freeze-thaw resistance. Besides this, 0.5% crushed mask fiber also performed well, especially for producing less permeable and highly durable concrete. It is thus corroborated that waste masks that increase pollution worldwide can be utilized sustainably to help build green buildings. By reutilizing waste masks to produce improved concrete with better strengths and higher durability, circular economy and sustainability are achieved, along with efficient waste management.

Abstract:<p>To study the shear mechanical properties and deformation mechanism of the interface between cemented soil and warm frozen soil, the key parameters are provided for the design and evaluation of cemented soil structure in warm frozen soil ground. In this study, a series of negative temperature direct shear tests of the cast-in-place cemented soil-frozen soil interface were conducted under the influence of different factors. The binary medium model was used to investigate the mechanical stress and deformational mechanisms of the interface, and the damage rate and stress sharing rate functions were introduced. Assuming that the strength of each element of the interface obeyed the Weibull probability distribution, the constitutive equation of the warm frozen soil-cemented soil interface was established. The results showed that the stress-displacement curve of the interface was a strain-softening type, and the entire deformation process of the interface was divided into four stages: the linear elastic, elastic-plastic, softening, and residual stability stages. The constitutive model based on the binary medium theory revealed the micro stress–strain mechanism of the interface and better described the entire stress–displacement process of the interface and the strain softening phenomenon, which can provide a basis for the numerical simulation and theoretical calculation of the structure in the frozen soil ground.</p>

Abstract:Grouting and artificial ground freezing (AGF) methods are usually adopted to reinforce stratum, and they are occasionally implemented concurrently to stabilize the stratum under the influence of tunnel construction for crucial projects. When the structural construction is completed, the stratum is followed by a natural thawing process. The freeze-thaw cycle can lead to significant variation in the engineering properties of cemented soils. In this paper, strength, dynamic elastic modulus, and dynamic damping ratio of cemented soils after a freeze-thaw cycle were investigated through static and dynamic triaxial tests. To better understand the behavior of cemented soils, the Duncan-Chang model was adopted and the model parameters were calibrated based on results from the triaxial test under static loads. In addition, empirical models were established to characterize the dynamic elastic modulus and dynamic damping ratio of cemented soils. Test results from the static load triaxial tests indicated a strong correlation between cement content and confining pressure and soil strength. The cumulative plastic strain under dynamic loading depended on several factors, including the cement content and loading frequency. The number of loading cycles, cement content, and loading frequency all had a significant impact on the dynamic elastic modulus and damping ratio. The results and findings presented in this study are beneficial for the design of underground structures subjected to cyclic loading.
