Abstract:BACKGROUND:TMexCD1-TOprJ1, which is associated with phenotypic resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics, is a transmissible resistance-nodulation-division (RND) family efflux pump. However, the prevalence and genomic and phenotypic characteristics of clinical isolates with this important resistance determinant are poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to survey tmexCD-toprJ among clinical Gram-negative isolates collected from hospitals in China between 1991 and 2020 and characterise tmexCD-toprJ-positive clinical isolates. METHODS:We conducted online data retrieval and active nationwide surveillance in China to screen tmexCD-toprJ-positive strains. We characterised tmexCD-toprJ-positive clinical strains for their antimicrobial susceptibility, genetic and functional characteristics, and the potential inter-species transmission route of tmexCD-toprJ with whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics analyses. The function of tmexCD-toprJ in Pseudomonas sp and Proteus sp was investigated by tmexD gene knockdown using an isopropylthio-β-galactoside-inducible CRISPR interference system. FINDINGS:Data retrieval obtained 53 strains carrying tmexCD-toprJ, comprising 32 Pseudomonas spp, 11 Klebsiella pneumoniae, one Aeromonas spp, one Citrobacter freundii, and one uncultured bacterium from diverse niches. 48 (0·64%) of 7517 clinical isolates from China, including seven Klebsiella spp, one Proteus mirabilis, and 40 Pseudomonas spp, carried tmexCD-toprJ. These isolates exhibited multidrug resistance phenotypes and co-harboured resistance genes, such as mcr and carbapenemases genes. tmexCD-toprJ was encoded on both plasmids and chromosomes in all Klebsiella spp that carried plasmid-borne tmexCD-toprJ (n=7), P mirabilis carried chromosome-borne tmexCD-toprJ, and Pseudomonas spp carried either plasmid-borne (n=19) or chromosome-borne (n=21) ones. tmexCD-toprJ had undergone clonal and horizontal transmission among clinical pathogens. Eight different types of genetic context of tmexCD-toprJ were identified, each of which was associated with different mobile elements, including IntI, IS6100, TnAs1-like, ISRor5, ISVsa3, ISCfr-like, Tn5393, and IS222-like, which might facilitate its transmission. Knockdown of tmexD led to a four times decrease in tigecycline minimum inhibitory concentrations in both Pseudomonas spp and Proteus spp. INTERPRETATION:Our study provides evidence to suggest that tmexCD-toprJ contributes to the antimicrobial resistance phenotypes in different bacterial species. tmexCD-toprJ has disseminated among diverse species of clinical pathogens, which warrants timely monitoring in clinical pathogens. Abstract:Antibiotic resistance has increased markedly in gram-negative bacteria over the last two decades, and in many cases has been associated with increased mortality and healthcare costs. The adoption of genotyping and next generation whole genome sequencing of large sets of clinical bacterial isolates has greatly expanded our understanding of how antibiotic resistance develops and transmits among bacteria and between patients. Diverse mechanisms of resistance, including antibiotic degradation, antibiotic target modification, and modulation of permeability through the bacterial membrane have been demonstrated. These fundamental insights into the mechanisms of gram-negative antibiotic resistance have influenced the development of novel antibiotics and treatment practices in highly resistant infections. Here, we review the mechanisms and global epidemiology of antibiotic resistance in some of the most clinically important resistance phenotypes, including carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae, extensively drug resistant (XDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and XDR Acinetobacter baumannii. Understanding the resistance mechanisms and epidemiology of these pathogens is critical for the development of novel antibacterials and for individual treatment decisions, which often involve alternatives to β-lactam antibiotics.

Abstract:Systematic review registration: Gram-negative bacteria have been one of the most studied classes in the field of microbiology, especially in the context of globally alarming antimicrobial resistance levels to these pathogens over the course of the past decades. With high numbers of these microorganisms being described as multidrug-resistant (MDR), or even extended-drug-resistant (XDR) bacteria, specialists in the field have been struggling to keep up with higher prevalence of difficult-to-treat infections caused by such superbugs. The FDA approval of novel antimicrobials, such as cefiderocol (FDC), ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T), ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA), imipenem/relebactam (IMR), sulbactam/durlobactam (SUL-DUR) and phase 3 clinical trials' results of aztreonam/avibactam (ATM-AVI) has proven that, while all these substances provide encouraging efficacy rates, antibiotic resistance keeps up with the pace of drug development. Microorganisms have developed more extensive mechanisms of resistance in order to target the threat posed by these novel antimicrobials, thus equiring researchers to be on a constant lookout for other potential drug candidates and molecule development. However, these strategies require a proper understanding of bacterial resistance mechanisms to gain a comprehensive outlook on the issue. Abstract:Antibiotic resistance is recognised as a global threat to human health by national healthcare agencies, governments and medical societies, as well as the World Health Organization. Increasing resistance to available antimicrobial agents is of concern for bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic pathogens. One of the greatest concerns is the continuing escalation of antimicrobial resistance among Gram-negative bacteria resulting in the endemic presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extremely drug-resistant (XDR) pathogens. This concern is heightened by the identification of such MDR/XDR Gram-negative bacteria in water and food sources, as colonisers of the intestine and other locations in both hospitalised patients and individuals in the community, and as agents of all types of infections. Pneumonia and other types of respiratory infections are among the most common infections caused by MDR/XDR Gram-negative bacteria and are associated with high rates of mortality. Future concerns are already heightened due to emergence of resistance to all existing antimicrobial agents developed in the past decade to treat MDR/XDR Gram-negative bacteria and a scarcity of novel agents in the developmental pipeline. This clinical scenario increases the likelihood of a future pandemic caused by MDR/XDR Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract:SUMMARY Many studies report the high prevalence of multiply drug-resistant (MDR) strains. Because MDR infections are often significantly harder and more expensive to treat, they represent a growing public health threat. However, for different pathogens, different underlying mechanisms are traditionally used to explain these observations, and it is unclear whether each bacterial taxon has its own mechanism(s) for multidrug resistance or whether there are common mechanisms between distantly related pathogens. In this review, we provide a systematic overview of the causes of the excess of MDR infections and define testable predictions made by each hypothetical mechanism, including experimental, epidemiological, population genomic, and other tests of these hypotheses. Better understanding the cause(s) of the excess of MDR is the first step to rational design of more effective interventions to prevent the origin and/or proliferation of MDR.

Abstract:In recent years, we have seen antimicrobial resistance rapidly emerge at a global scale and spread from one country to the other faster than previously thought. Superbugs and multidrug-resistant bacteria are endemic in many parts of the world. There is no question that the widespread use, overuse, and misuse of antimicrobials during the last 80 years have been associated with the explosion of antimicrobial resistance. On the other hand, the molecular pathways behind the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria were present since ancient times. Some of these mechanisms are the ancestors of current resistance determinants. Evidently, there are plenty of putative resistance genes in the environment, however, we cannot yet predict which ones would be able to be expressed as phenotypes in pathogenic bacteria and cause clinical disease. In addition, in the presence of inhibitory and sub-inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics in natural habitats, one could assume that novel resistance mechanisms will arise against antimicrobial compounds. This review presents an overview of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, and describes how these have evolved and how they continue to emerge. As antimicrobial strategies able to bypass the development of resistance are urgently needed, a better understanding of the critical factors that contribute to the persistence and spread of antimicrobial resistance may yield innovative perspectives on the design of such new therapeutic targets.

Abstract:A current major healthcare problem is represented by antibiotic resistance, mainly due to multidrug resistant (MDR) Gram negative bacilli (GNB), because of their extended spread both in hospital facilities and in the community's environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the virulence traits of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa MDR, XDR, and PDR strains isolated from various hospitalized patients. These GNB strains were investigated for the presence of soluble virulence factors (VF), such as hemolysins, lecithinase, amylase, lipase, caseinase, gelatinase, and esculin hydrolysis, as well as for the presence of virulence genes encoding for VF involved in adherence (TC, fimH, and fimA), biofilm formation (algD, ecpRAB, mrkA, mrkD, ompA, and epsA), tissue destruction (plcH and plcN), and in toxin production (cnfI, hlyA, hlyD, and exo complex). All P. aeruginosa strains produced hemolysins; 90% produced lecithinase; and 80% harbored algD, plcH, and plcN genes. The esculin hydrolysis was detected in 96.1% of the K. pneumoniae strains, whereas 86% of them were positive for the mrkA gene. All of the A. baumannii strains produced lecithinase and 80% presented the ompA gene. A significant association was found between the number of VF and the XDR strains, regardless of the isolation sources. This study opens new research perspectives related to bacterial fitness and pathogenicity, and it provides new insights regarding the connection between biofilm formation, other virulence factors, and antibiotic resistance.

Abstract:The discovery of antibiotics has created a turning point in medical interventions to pathogenic infections, but unfortunately, each discovery was consistently followed by the emergence of resistance. The rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria has generated a great challenge to treat infections caused by bacteria with the available antibiotics. Today, research is active in finding new treatments for multidrug-resistant pathogens. In a step to guide the efforts, the WHO has published a list of the most dangerous bacteria that are resistant to current treatments and requires the development of new antibiotics for combating the resistance. Among the list are various Gram-positive bacteria that are responsible for serious healthcare and community-associated infections. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, and drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae are of particular concern. The resistance of bacteria is an evolving phenomenon that arises from genetic mutations and/or acquired genomes. Thus, antimicrobial resistance demands continuous efforts to create strategies to combat this problem and optimize the use of antibiotics. This article aims to provide a review of the most critical resistant Gram-positive bacterial pathogens, their mechanisms of resistance, and the new treatments and approaches reported to circumvent this problem.

Abstract:Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen affecting humans and a major source for hospital infections associated with high morbidity and mortality due to limited treatment options. We summarize the wide resistome of this pathogen, which encompasses plentiful chromosomal and plasmid-encoded antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Under antibiotic selective pressure, K. pneumoniae continuously accumulates ARGs, by de novo mutations, and via acquisition of plasmids and transferable genetic elements, leading to extremely drug resistant (XDR) strains harboring a 'super resistome'. In the last two decades, numerous high-risk (HiR) MDR and XDR K. pneumoniae sequence types have emerged showing superior ability to cause multicontinent outbreaks, and continuous global dissemination. The data highlight the complex evolution of MDR and XDR K. pneumoniae, involving transfer and spread of ARGs, and epidemic plasmids in highly disseminating successful clones. With the worldwide catastrophe of antibiotic resistance and the urgent need to identify the main pathogens that pose a threat on the future of infectious diseases, further studies are warranted to determine the epidemic traits and plasmid acquisition in K. pneumoniae. There is a need for future genomic and translational studies to decipher specific targets in HiR clones to design targeted prevention and treatment.

Abstract:Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and nasopharynx with many being linked to nosocomial infections. Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL)-producing and carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a critical public health concern. In this study, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) – based analysis was performed to understand the molecular epidemiology of multi-drug resistant Klebsiella spp. clinical isolates. Genome comparison, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and whole-genome-SNP-based phylogenetic analysis (wg-SNP) were used for in-depth molecular characterization. in silico typing was used to determine the resistance genes, virulence factors, Inc. groups, and capsular types. All except one isolate were non-susceptible to meropenem and 89% were non-susceptible to ertapenem and imipenem. bla NDM , bla OXA-48 , and bla KPC were the detected carbapenemases with bla NDM-1 found in half of the sequenced genomes. Resistance to colistin was detected in one isolate and was linked to several genetic alterations in crrB , pmrB , and pmrC genes. The most common plasmid type was IncFIB followed by IncR, and the Type 3 fimbriae, encoded by the mrkABCDF operon, was conserved among all isolates. The most common sequence- (ST) and K-type detected were ST147 and K64. The prevelance and the genomic relatedness of ST147 isolates, as shown by the data from SNP-based phylogenetic analysis, PFGE, and genomic clustering, may be an outbreak marker. However, this can only be validated through a more comprehensive study encompassing a wider sampling scheme and over an extended timeframe.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains one of the most challenging phenomena of everyday medical science. The universal spread of high-risk clones of multidrug-resistant/extensively drug-resistant (MDR/XDR) clinical P. aeruginosa has become a public health threat. The P. aeruginosa bacteria exhibits remarkable genome plasticity that utilizes highly acquired and intrinsic resistance mechanisms to counter most antibiotic challenges. In addition, the adaptive antibiotic resistance of P. aeruginosa, including biofilm-mediated resistance and the formation of multidrug-tolerant persisted cells, are accountable for recalcitrance and relapse of infections. We highlighted the AMR mechanism considering the most common pathogen P. aeruginosa, its clinical impact, epidemiology, and save our souls (SOS)-mediated resistance. We further discussed the current therapeutic options against MDR/XDR P. aeruginosa infections, and described those treatment options in clinical practice. Finally, other therapeutic strategies, such as bacteriophage-based therapy and antimicrobial peptides, were described with clinical relevance.

Abstract:Infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), including carbapenem-resistant (CR) Enterobacterales (CRE; harboring mainly bla KPC , bla NDM , and bla OXA-48 -like genes), CR- or MDR/XDR- Pseudomonas aeruginosa (production of VIM, IMP, or NDM carbapenemases combined with porin alteration), and Acinetobacter baumannii complex (producing mainly OXA-23, OXA-58-like carbapenemases), have gradually worsened and become a major challenge to public health because of limited antibiotic choice and high case-fatality rates. Diverse MDR/XDR-GNB isolates have been predominantly cultured from inpatients and hospital equipment/settings, but CRE has also been identified in community settings and long-term care facilities. Several CRE outbreaks cost hospitals and healthcare institutions huge economic burdens for disinfection and containment of their disseminations. Parenteral polymyxin B/E has been observed to have a poor pharmacokinetic profile for the treatment of CR- and XDR-GNB. It has been determined that tigecycline is suitable for the treatment of bloodstream infections owing to GNB, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of ≤ 0.5 mg/L. Ceftazidime-avibactam is a last-resort antibiotic against GNB of Ambler class A/C/D enzyme-producers and a majority of CR- P. aeruginosa isolates. Furthermore, ceftolozane-tazobactam is shown to exhibit excellent in vitro activity against CR- and XDR- P. aeruginosa isolates. Several pharmaceuticals have devoted to exploring novel antibiotics to combat these troublesome XDR-GNBs. Nevertheless, only few antibiotics are shown to be effective in vitro against CR/XDR- A. baumannii complex isolates. In this era of antibiotic pipelines, strict implementation of antibiotic stewardship is as important as in-time isolation cohorts in limiting the spread of CR/XDR-GNB and alleviating the worsening trends of resistance.

Abstract:Background: The gut microbiome is made up of a diverse range of bacteria, especially gram-negative bacteria, and is crucial for human health and illness. There is a great deal of interest in the dynamic interactions between gram-negative bacteria and their host environment, especially considering antibiotic resistance. This work aims to isolate gram-negative bacteria that exist in the gut, identify their species, and use resistance-associated gene analysis to define their resistance mechanisms. Methods: Samples were collected from all patients who had a stool culture at a tertiary care center in Lebanon. Each type of bacteria that was identified from the stool samples was subjected to critical evaluations, and all discovered strains underwent antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Polymerase chain reaction was used to profile the genes for Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), and that of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. Results: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa turned out to be the predominant microbiota members. Escherichia coli strains had a high frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase genes, with the most discovered gene being bla CTX-M. Additionally, a considerable percentage of isolates had carbapenemase-resistant Enterobacteriaceae genes, suggesting the rise of multidrug-resistant strains. Multidrug resistance genes, such as bla mexR, bla mexB, and bla mexA, were found in strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, highlighting the possible difficulties in treating infections brought on by these bacteria. Conclusion: The findings highlight the critical importance of effective surveillance and response measures to maintain the effectiveness of antibiotics considering the introduction of multidrug resistance genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and ESBL and CRE genes in Escherichia coli.

Abstract:Multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections are exponentially increasing, posing one of the most urgent global healthcare and economic threats. Due to the lack of new therapies, the World Health Organization classified these bacterial species as priority pathogens in 2017, known as ESKAPE pathogens. This classification emphasizes the need for urgent research and development of novel targeted therapies. The majority of these priority pathogens are Gram-negative species, which possess a structurally dynamic cell envelope enabling them to resist multiple antibiotics, thereby leading to increased mortality rates. Despite 6 years having passed since the WHO classification, the progress in generating new treatment ideas has not been sufficient, and antimicrobial resistance continues to escalate, acting as a global ticking time bomb. Numerous efforts and strategies have been employed to combat the rising levels of antibiotic resistance by targeting specific resistance mechanisms. These mechanisms include antibiotic inactivating/modifying enzymes, outer membrane porin remodelling, enhanced efflux pump action, and alteration of antibiotic target sites. Some strategies have demonstrated clinical promise, such as the utilization of beta-lactamase inhibitors as antibiotic adjuvants, as well as recent advancements in machine-based learning employing artificial intelligence to facilitate the production of novel narrow-spectrum antibiotics. However, further research into an enhanced understanding of the precise mechanisms by which antibiotic resistance occurs, specifically tailored to each bacterial species, could pave the way for exploring narrow-spectrum targeted therapies. This review aims to introduce the key features of Gram-negative bacteria and their current treatment approaches, summarizing the major antibiotic resistance mechanisms with a focus on Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Additionally, potential directions for alternative therapies will be discussed, along with their relative modes of action, providing a future perspective and insight into the discipline of antimicrobial resistance.

Abstract:Despite being members of gut microbiota, Enterobacteriaceae are associated with many severe infections such as bloodstream infections. The β-lactam drugs have been the cornerstone of antibiotic therapy for such infections. However, the overuse of these antibiotics has contributed to select β-lactam-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates, so that β-lactam resistance is nowadays a major concern worldwide. The production of enzymes that inactivate β-lactams, mainly extended-spectrum β-lactamases and carbapenemases, can confer multidrug resistance patterns that seriously compromise therapeutic options. Further, β-lactam resistance may result in increases in the drug toxicity, mortality, and healthcare costs associated with Enterobacteriaceae infections. Here, we summarize the updated evidence about the molecular mechanisms and epidemiology of β-lactamase-mediated β-lactam resistance in Enterobacteriaceae, and their potential impact on clinical outcomes of β-lactam-resistant Enterobacteriaceae infections.

Abstract:Multidrug resistance (MDR) in bacteria poses a serious global health threat, compromising the effectiveness of antibiotics. MDR causes approximately 700,000 deaths annually, with MDR tuberculosis alone claiming 230,000 lives. While bacteria inherently possess intrinsic resistance, acquired resistance stands out as the primary culprit in MDR development. Acquired resistance mechanisms mediated by the bacterial cell wall, nucleic acids, and proteins play a pivotal role in the genesis of MDR. Bacteria can modify their cell wall structure, produce resistant enzymes, exhibit mutations in antibiotic-targeted genes, and acquire resistant genes through horizontal gene transfer. Bacteria can produce proteins that act as enzymes, chemically modifying or directly degrading the antibiotic molecules, leading to the loss of their functionality. Apart from these mechanisms, biofilms also play a pivotal role in MDR expansion. Despite the development of several antibiotics since the discovery of penicillin, continuous structural and molecular modifications in bacteria render these antibiotics ineffective against MDR. The most recent approaches such as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR-associated proteins (CRISPR-Cas), nanotechnology, a combination of CRISPR-Cas, and nanoparticles, show promise in treating MDR. Thus, this review delves deep into the molecular mechanisms of MDR, emphasizing the limitations of current antibiotics due to bacterial evolution and highlighting current strategies in the fight against MDR bacteria. This will drive comprehensive research to uncover additional resistance mechanisms and develop innovative strategies to combat resistant bacteria effectively.

Molecular characterization of the multi-drug resistant Myroides odoratimimus isolates: a whole genome sequence-based study to confirm carbapenem resistance

Abstract:The bacteria belonging to the Myroides genus are opportunistic pathogens causing community or hospital-acquired infections that result in treatment failure due to antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to investigate molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, clonal relatedness, and the biofilm forming capacity of the 51 multi-drug resistant Myroides odoratimimus. All isolates were screened for blaKPC, blaOXA, blaVIM, blaIMP, blaMUS, blaTUS, blaNDM, and blaB genes by using PCR amplification. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was applied on three randomly selected isolates for further investigation of antibiotic resistance mechanisms. Clonal relatedness was analyzed by Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and the microtiter plate method was used to demonstrate biofilm formation. All isolates were positive for biofilm formation. PCR analysis resulted in a positive for only the blaMUS-1 gene. WGS identified blaMUS-1, erm(F), ere(D), tet(X), and sul2 genes in all strains tested. Moreover, the genomic analyses of three strains revealed that genomes contained a large number of virulence factors (VFs). PFGE yielded a clustering rate of 96%. High clonal relatedness, biofilm formation, and multi-drug resistance properties may lead to the predominance of these opportunistic pathogens in hospital environments and make them cause nosocomial infections.
Characterization and genetic analysis of extensively drug-resistant hospital acquired Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates

Abstract:Background: The incidence of hospital-acquired infections in extensively drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (XDR-PA) has been increasing worldwide and is frequently associated with an increase in mortality and morbidity rates. The aim of this study was to characterize clinical XDR-PA isolates recovered during six months at three different hospitals in Egypt. Results: Seventy hospital-acquired clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa were classified into multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and pandrug-resistant (PDR), according to their antimicrobial resistance profile. In addition, the possession of genes associated with mobile genetic elements and genes encoding antimicrobial resistance determinants among isolates were detected using polymerase chain reaction. As a result, a significant percentage of the isolates (75.7%) were XDR, while 18.5% were MDR, however only 5.7% of the isolates were non-MDR. The phenotypic detection of carbapenemases, extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and metallo β-lactamase (MBL) enzymes showed that 73.6% of XDR-PA isolates were carbapenemases producers, whereas 75.5% and 88.7% of XDR-PA isolates produced ESBLs and MBL respectively. In addition, PCR screening showed that oxa gene was the most frequently detected gene of carbapenemases (91.4%), while aac(6')-lb gene was mostly detected (84.3%) among the screened aminoglycosides-resistance genes. Furthermore, the molecular detection of the colistin resistance gene showed that 12.9% of isolates harbored mcr-1 gene. Concerning mobile genetic element markers (intI, traA, tnp513, and merA), intI was the highest detected gene as it was amplified in 67 isolates (95.7%). Finally, phylogenetic and molecular typing of the isolates via ERIC-PCR analysis revealed 10 different ERIC fingerprints. Conclusion: The present study revealed a high prevalence of XDR-PA in hospital settings which were resistant to a variety of antibiotics due to several mechanisms. In addition, 98% of the XDR-PA clinical isolates contained at least one gene associated with movable genetic elements, which could have aided the evolution of these XDR-PA strains. To reduce spread of drug resistance, judicious use of antimicrobial agents and strict infection control measures are therefore essential.
