Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with low cost and high safety are considered as an electrochemical energy storage technology suitable for large-scale energy storage. Hard carbon, which is inexpensive and has both high capacity and low sodium storage potential, is regarded as the most promising anode for commercial SIBs. However, the commercialization of hard carbon still faces technical issues of low initial Coulombic efficiency, poor rate performance, and insufficient cycling stability, due to the intrinsically irregular microstructure of hard carbon. To address these challenges, the rational design of the hard carbon microstructure is crucial for achieving high-performance SIBs, via gaining an in-depth understanding of its structure–performance correlations. In this context, our review firstly describes the sodium storage mechanism from the perspective of the hard carbon microstructure's formation. We then summarize the state-of-art development of hard carbon, providing a critical overview of emergence of hard carbon in terms of precursor selection, microstructure design, and electrolyte regulation to optimize strategies for addressing practical problems. Finally, we highlight directions for the future development of hard carbon to achieve the commercialization of high-performance SIBs. We believe this review will serve as basic guidance for the rational design of hard carbon and stimulate more exciting research into other types of energy storage devices.

Abstract:Abstract: Sodium-ion battery is a promising alternative to lithium-ion battery because of its abundant raw material resources, low price, and high specific capacity. Amorphous carbon materials (hard carbon) have micropores and impurities, facilitating the intercalation of sodium ions to form "quasi-metallic sodium," resulting in a high sodium storage capacity and a low sodium storage potential. Consequently, hard carbon is one of the most widely studied negative electrode materials. It can be prepared from biomass by thermochemical conversion and has the advantages of large specific capacity, low cost, good cycling stability, and renewability. This review focuses on the recent advances in biomass-based hard carbon materials. Firstly, the preparation methods of hard carbon, including precursor selection, pretreatment, drying methods, and carbonization processes, are summarized. Secondly, the effects of precursor composition and heteroatom doping structure and properties of hard carbon are examined, and the changes in carbon material pores during the activation process, as well as the selection of optimal drying method, pyrolysis temperature, carbonization temperature, activator dosage, and additive, are discussed. Thirdly, the impact of preparation methods on hard carbon's cost, efficiency, and stability is briefly summarized, and the relevant improvement measures and prospects are proposed. Finally, some insights are provided into preparing highperformance biomass-based anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:With the development of high-performance electrode materials, sodium-ion batteries have been extensively studied and could potentially be applied in various fields to replace the lithium-ion cells, owing to the low cost and natural abundance. As the key anode materials of sodium-ion batteries, hard carbons still face problems, such as poor cycling performance and low initial Coulombic efficiency. Owning to the low synthesis cost and the natural presence of heteroatoms of biomasses, biomasses have positive implications for synthesizing the hard carbons for sodium-ion batteries. This minireview mainly explains the research progress of biomasses used as the precursors to prepare the hard-carbon materials. The storage mechanism of hard carbons, comparisons of the structural properties of hard carbons prepared from different biomasses, and the influence of the preparation conditions on the electrochemical properties of hard carbons are introduced. In addition, the effect of doping atoms is also summarized to provide an in-depth understanding and guidance for the design of high-performance hard carbons for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:As an effective complement to lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries are mainly used in some low-energy-density power cells and large energy storage devices. Of the numerous anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, hard carbon is undoubtedly the most mature and currently the only commercially available anode material, but there is still a long way to go before large-scale commercialization. In order to reduce the source cost of cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries, we chose biomass materials as the precursor of hard carbon cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. In this study, it is demonstrated that hard carbon can be classified into plant- and animal-derived hard carbon, and the corresponding preparation methods, structural properties, and electrochemical properties are analyzed and summarized. In this study, we also summarize several approaches reported in the literature to improve the electrochemical properties of materials. The objective is to provide a reference for improving the properties of hard carbon materials from biological sources and to facilitate large-scale commercialization of hard carbon anode materials with sodium ions.

Abstract:A series of hard-soft carbon composite materials is produced from biomass and oil waste and applied as low-cost anodes for sodium-ion batteries to study the fundamentals behind the dependence of Na storage on their structural features. A good reversible capacity of 282 mAh g(-1) is obtained at a current density of 30 mA g(-1) with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 80% at a carbonization temperature of only 1000 degrees C by adjusting the ratio of hard to soft carbon. The performance is superior to the pure hard or soft carbon anodes produced at the same temperatures. This synergy between hard and soft carbon resulting in an excellent performance is due to the blockage of some open pores in hard carbon by the soft carbon, which suppresses the solid electrolyte interface formation and increases the reversible sodium storage capacity.

Abstract:Compared with currently prevailing Li-ion technologies, sodium-ion energy storage devices play a supremely important role in grid-scale storage due to the advantages of rich abundance and low cost of sodium resources. As one of the crucial components of the sodium-ion battery and sodium-ion capacitor, electrode materials based on biomass-derived carbons have attracted enormous attention in the past few years owing to their excellent performance, inherent structural advantages, cost-effectiveness, renewability, etc. Here, a systematic summary of recent progress on various biomass-derived carbons used for sodium-ion energy storage (e.g., sodium-ion storage principle, the classification of bio-microstructure) is presented. Current research on the design principles of the structure and composition of biomass-derived carbons for improving sodium-ion storage will be highlighted. The prospects and challenges related to this will also be discussed. This review attempts to present a comprehensive account of the recent progress and design principle of biomass-derived carbons as sodium-ion storage materials and provide guidance in future rational tailoring of biomass-derived carbons.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries have recently emerged as a promising alternative energy storage technology to lithium-ion batteries due to similar mechanisms and potentially low cost. Hard carbon is widely recognized as a potential anode candidate for sodium-ion batteries due to its high specific surface area, high electrical conductivity, abundance of resources, and low cost. Despite recent progress in the study of hard carbon materials, the understanding of the intrinsic charge storage mechanism behind their charging/discharging behavior remains controversial. In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the sodium storage mechanism of hard carbon as well as to rationally design high-performance hard carbon anode materials, this review discusses four typical hard carbon storage models and its mechanism for storing sodium ions. It comprehensively elucidates the key bottleneck issues of the hard carbon anode structure and electrolyte in sodium-ion batteries and proposes several solutions to enhance the performance of hard carbon materials through structural design and electrolyte optimization. In addition, the design and manufacturing progress of coal-based hard carbon materials are discussed in detail. Finally, several possible strategies for the development of high-performance hard carbon negative electrode sodium-ion batteries in the future are proposed.

Abstract:In the past decade, the rapid development of portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and electrical devices has stimulated extensive interests in fundamental research and commercialization of electrochemical energy storage systems. Biomass‐derived carbon has garnered significant research attention as an efficient, inexpensive and eco‐friendly active material for energy storage systems. Therefore, high‐performance carbonaceous materials, derived from renewable sources, have been utilized as electrode materials in sodium‐ion batteries and sodium‐ion capacitors. In this review, we summarize the charge storage mechanism and utilization of biomass‐derived carbon for sodium storage in batteries and capacitors. In particular, the structure‐performance relationship of biomass‐derived carbon for sodium storage in the form of batteries and capacitors is discussed. Despite the fact that further research is required to optimize the process and application of biomass‐derived carbon in energy storage devices, the current review demonstrates the potential of carbonaceous materials for next‐generation sodium‐involved energy storage applications.

Abstract:With the rapid development of renewable energy and the growth of energy demand, sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted much attention from researchers as a promising energy storage technology. Hard carbon anodes are considered to be the most promising anodes of SIBs because of their low sodium storage potential, high capacity, wide range of raw materials, and environmental friendliness. However, the rate capability and initial coulombic efficiency of hard carbon hinder the further commercialization of hard carbon. This review provides a concise overview of the three microstructures and four sodium storage mechanisms of hard carbon and comprehensively introduces the latest research progress on strategies to effectively improve the electrochemical performance of hard carbon anodes, which are categorized into structural and morphology design, precursors selection, electrolyte optimization, surface engineering, and pre‐sodiation as modification strategies. In addition, the current research progress on sodium‐ion full batteries is also encapsulated and the developmental prospects of hard carbon anodes in SIBs is looked forward to.

Abstract:Waste management is one of the biggest environmental challenges worldwide. Biomass-derived hard carbons, which can be applied to rechargeable batteries, can contribute to mitigating environmental changes by enabling the use of renewable energy. This study has carried out a comparative environmental assessment of sustainable hard carbons, produced from System A (hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) followed by pyrolysis) and System B (direct pyrolysis) with different carbon yields, as anodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). We have also analysed different scenarios to save energy in our processes and compared the biomass-derived hard carbons with commercial graphite used in lithium-ion batteries. The life cycle assessment results show that the two systems display significant savings in terms of their global warming potential impact (A1: -30%; B1: -21%), followed by human toxicity potential, photochemical oxidants creation potential, acidification potential and eutrophication potential (both over -90%). Possessing the best electrochemical performance for SIBs among our prepared hard carbons, the HTC-based method is more stable in both environmental and electrochemical aspects than the direct pyrolysis method. Such results help a comprehensive understanding of sustainable hard carbons used in SIBs and show an environmental potential to the practical technologies. Comparison and Optimization of Biomass-Derived Hard Carbon As Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Hard carbon made from biomass-based precursors has many advantages as anode for sodium-ion batteries such as low cost and sustainability. In this work, three different hard carbon materials derived from bamboo, wood and coconut shell with the same particle size are screened, combining acid etching and carbonization at 1200 degrees C, to compare the sodium ion storage performances. The anode material originated from bamboo shows the highest specific capacity among them. Subsequently, the hard carbon from bamboo is optimized by the same process, but changing the carbonization temperature ranging from 1000 degrees C to 1400 degrees C. Among the hard carbon materials, the bamboo-derived one prepared at 1300 degree celsius exhibits excellent electrochemical performances at a current density of 30 mA g-1, with a high reversible specific capacity of 303.8 mAh/g and an initial coulombic efficiency of 83.7 %. After 150 cycles, a capacity retention of 94.7 % is achieved at a current density of 300 mA g-1. This work provides a potential hard carbon anode for sodium-ion batteries to realize large-scale energy storage due to the cheap sources of bamboo.
Preparation of green high‐performance biomass‐derived hard carbon materials from bamboo powder waste

Abstract:This study used pre‐treatment and template carbonization methods to extract a hard carbon material from a large amount of discarded biomass in bamboo powder waste. Template activation method produces rich and uniform pore structures that are beneficial for sodium storage. Efficient energy storage systems are crucial for the optimal utilization of renewable energy. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are considered potential substitutes for next‐generation low‐cost energy storage systems due to the low cost and abundance of sodium resources. However, the industrialization of SIBs faces a great challenge in terms of the anode. Hard carbon could be a promising anode material due to its high capacity and low cost which originates from biomass. This study used pre‐treatment and template carbonization methods to extract a hard carbon material from a large amount of discarded biomass in bamboo powder waste. This material has a good initial Coulombic efficiency of 78.6 % and good cycling stability when applied to sodium ion batteries.Typically, the optimal hard carbon material is used as the anode to prepare sodium ion battery prototypes to demonstrate their potential applications. The anode exhibited excellent sodium storage performance with a reversible capacity of 303 mAh ⋅ g−1 at 1 C rate and good cycling performance, retaining 92.0 % of its capacity after 100 cycles. These results demonstrate that BPPHC is a promising candidate for anode material in sodium‐ion batteries. This work suggests that bamboo powder could be a low‐cost anode material for SIBs.

Abstract:When compared to expensive lithium metal, the metal sodium resources on Earth are abundant and evenly distributed. Therefore, low-cost sodium-ion batteries are expected to replace lithium-ion batteries and become the most likely energy storage system for large-scale applications. Among the many anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, hard carbon has obvious advantages and great commercial potential. In this review, the adsorption behavior of sodium ions at the active sites on the surface of hard carbon, the process of entering the graphite lamellar, and their sequence in the discharge process are analyzed. The controversial storage mechanism of sodium ions is discussed, and four storage mechanisms for sodium ions are summarized. Not only is the storage mechanism of sodium ions (in hard carbon) analyzed in depth, but also the relationships between their morphology and structure regulation and between heteroatom doping and electrolyte optimization are further discussed, as well as the electrochemical performance of hard carbon anodes in sodium-ion batteries. It is expected that the sodium-ion batteries with hard carbon anodes will have excellent electrochemical performance, and lower costs will be required for large-scale energy storage systems.

Abstract:Hard carbon (HC) is the state-of-the-art anode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its excellent overall performance, wide availability, and relatively low cost. Recently, tremendous effort has been invested to elucidate the sodium storage mechanism in HC, and to explore synthetic approaches that can enhance the performance and lower the cost. However, disagreements remain in the field, particularly on the fundamental questions of ion transfer and storage and the ideal HC structure for high performance. This Minireview aims to provide an analysis and summary of the theoretical limitations of HC, discrepancies in the storage mechanism, and methods to improve the performance. Finally, future research on developing ideal structured HCs, advanced electrolytes, and optimized electrolyte-electrode interphases are proposed on the basis of recent progress.

Biomass‐Derived Phosphorus‐Doped Porous Hard Carbon Anode for Stable and High‐Rate Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Biomass‐derived hard carbon, despite being promising for anode material of sodium‐ion batteries, usually suﬀer from low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), poor rate capacity, and limited cycling stability caused by complex surface defects and low intrinsic conductivity. Herein, phosphorus‐doped porous hard carbon (HC@PC‐P) were synthesized by the thermal polymerization of soy lecithin on the surfaces of hard carbon derived from olive kernels. The incorporation of heteroatom phosphorus in the porous hard carbon framework expands the carbon lattice spacing, optimizes the graphitization degree, and increases electrical conductivity, guaranteeing ensuring rapid electron and ion transfer. These coupling effects enable HC@PC‐P anode to achieve a high reversible capacity of 350 mAh g‐1 at 0.1 A g‐1, an impressive initial coulombic efficiency of 89.6%, and remarkable long‐term cycling stability at 1 A g‐1 over 1000 cycles with negligible capacity fade. The mechanisms behind sodium storage and enhanced electrochemical performance were elucidated by ex‐situ Raman spectroscopy and kinetic analysis. Additionally, the assembled HC@PC‐P//Na3V2(PO4)3 full cell demonstrated a high energy density of 257.9 Wh kg‐1. This work provides a rational guide for designing advanced hard carbon anode materials for high‐energy sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are one of the most promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), due to the much more abundant resources of Na compared with Li in the world. Developing SIB technology to satisfy the increased demand for energy storage is therefore a significant task . However, one of the biggest bottlenecks is the design of high-performance and low-cost anode materials, since the graphite anode in commercial LIBs is not suitable for SIBs due to thermal dynamic issues. Hard carbon materials have been regarded as having the greatest potential as anodes in commercial SIBs owing to their excellent cost-effectiveness, but their relatively limited performance compared to the graphite in LIBs as well as the dimness of the sodium storage mechanisms still need further investigation. In this review, we summarize the progress of recent research into hard carbons for SIB applications, including the fundamentals of SIBs, sodium storage mechanisms, structures and the electrochemical performances of different types of hard carbons in SIBs and other types of sodium-based energy storage as well as the main challenges in this field. We aim to provide a general insight into hard carbons and their applications in SIBs, opening up future perspectives and possible research directions.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are regarded as an affordable alternative to commercial lithium-ion batteries in energy storage systems because of their abundant resources and comparable energy storage capabilities. Hard carbon is a prospective anode material to consider for the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries due to its promising electrochemical performance and the possibility of using renewable resources of bio-waste to obtain hard carbon. However, numerous disadvantages, including low initial coulombic efficiency and voltage hysteresis, continue to constrain the use of hard carbon in sodium-ion batteries. Various strategies have been attempted to address these challenges to transfer present promising research opportunities into practical applications. This review provides recent insights on bio-waste-derived hard carbons, which are classified into different types of hard carbon precursors, the effect of carbonization temperature and doping on the physical characteristics, and the variation in the property of hard carbon under different synthetic parameters is directly correlated with sodium storage process. We discuss the associated sodium storage mechanisms in-depth. Biomass hard carbon of high initial coulombic efficiency for sodium-ion batteries: Preparation and application

Abstract:Biomass hard carbon anodes have attracted wide attention due to the advantage of low cost and renewability, but the low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) limits their practical application in sodium-ion batteries. In this work, a carbonization method with low heating rate was conducted to prepare biomass hard carbon materials from camphor wood residues, and explore the key factors that influence the ICE. As the heating rate decreases, the as-prepared biomass hard carbon with a relatively low amount of defects displays a high ICE of 82.8% by decreasing the initial irreversible capacity loss. Specifically, when heating rate decreased to 0.25 ℃ min−1, the obtained hard carbon exhibits the optimal electrochemical performance with the initial charge capacity of 324.6 mAh g−1 and excellent cycle stability (90.0% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 50 mA g−1). Besides, matched with Na3V2(PO4)/C cathode, the full cell exhibits a high energy density of 245.3 Wh kg−1 and stable cycling performance. This comprehensive study provides a feasible method and open new opportunities for biomass hard carbon and extend the strategy to design the high-performance anode materials for SIBs.

Abstract:With abundant reserves, safe properties, and superior electrochemical rate, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are expected to be widely used in the large-scale energy storage applications. Searching for a cost-effective, long cycle life, and high-capacity sodium storage electrode material is the key to realize the large-scale application of SIBs. Among most of anode materials, hard carbon (HC) has attracted much attention because of its unique advantages. However, the insufficient initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and poor rate performance have always hindered the wide application of hard carbon in SIBs. This review introduced the Na-storage mechanism of hard carbon in detail, and provided an overview of the latest progress in electrochemical improvement of hard carbon from defects, pores, surface engineering, and other aspects. Starting from the relationship between the microstructure of hard carbon and electrochemical performance, the advantages and disadvantages of each optimization strategy were elaborated, and the direction of further performance improvement was provided. Finally, we look forward to the future of energy storage industry of hard carbon for SIBs. We believe that hard carbon as anode materials with satisfying electrochemical performance will be developed and manufactured for large-scale energy storage applications.
