Abstract:The 2021 Annual Joint Meeting (AJM) and Young Investigators' Forum of the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation / Société Canadienne de Recherches Clinique (CSCI/SCRC) and Clinician Investigator Trainee Association of Canada/Association des Cliniciens-Chercheurs en Formation du Canada (CITAC/ACCFC) was hosted virtually on November 14-16th, 2021. The theme of the AJM was "Communication, Collaboration, and Tools for the Next Generation of Clinician Scientists", and emphasized lectures, panels and interactive workshops designed to provide knowledge and skills for professional development of clinician investigator trainees. The opening remarks were given by Nicola Jones (President of CSCI/SCRC) and Adam Pietrobon (Past President of CITAC/ACCFC). The keynote speaker was Dr. Timothy Caulfield, who delivered the presentation titled "Communication in the Era of Misinformation". Dr. Michael Hill (University of Calgary) received the CSCI Distinguished Scientist Award and Dr. Philippe Campeau (Université de Montréal) received the CSCI Joe Doupe Young Investigator Award. Each of the scientists delivered award winning talks during the symposium titled "All the King's Horses and All the King's Men" and "Understanding Growth Plate Disorders to Better Treat Them", respectively. The three interactive workshops included "Data Visualization", "Science Communication on Social Media" and "Mentorship in Action". The two panels were "CIHR Engagement: Challenges and Opportunities in the Clinician Investigator Career Path" and "Early Career Investigator Panel". The AJM also included presentations from clinician investigator trainees from across the country. Over 60 abstracts were showcased at this year's meeting, most of which are summarized in this review. Six outstanding abstracts were selected for oral presentations during the President's Forum.

Abstract:On behalf of Cell Therapy Transplant Canada (CTTC), we are pleased to present the s of the CTTC 2023 Annual Conference. The conference was held in-person, 31 May–2 June 2023, in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the Westin Nova Scotian hotel. Poster authors presented their work during a lively and engaging welcome reception on Thursday, 1 June, and oral abstract authors were featured during the oral abstract session in the afternoon of Friday, 2 June 2023. Twenty-three (23) abstracts were selected for presentation as posters and four (4) as oral presentations. s were submitted within four categories: (1) Basic/Translational Sciences, (2) Clinical Trials/Observations, (3) Laboratory/Quality, and (4) Pharmacy/Nursing/Other Transplant Support. The top four (4) oral abstracts and top four (4) poster abstracts were selected to receive an award. All of these were marked as "Award Recipient" within the relevant category. We congratulate all the presenters on their research and contributions to the field.

Abstract:On 15–16 June 2023, healthcare professionals and breast cancer patients and advocates from across Canada met in Toronto, Ontario, for the 2023 Canadian Breast Cancer Symposium (CBSC). The CBSC is a national, multidisciplinary event that occurs every 2 years with the goal of developing a personalized approach to the management of breast cancer in Canada. Experts provided state-of-the-art information to help optimally manage breast cancer patients, including etiology, prevention, diagnosis, experimental biology, and therapy of breast cancer and premalignant breast disease. The symposium also had the objectives of increasing communication and collaboration among breast cancer healthcare providers nationwide and providing a comprehensive and real-life review of the many facets of breast cancer. The sessions covered the patient voice, the top breast cancer papers from different disciplines in 2022, artificial intelligence in breast cancer, systemic therapy updates, the management of central nervous system metastases, multidisciplinary management of ductal carcinoma in situ, special populations, optimization-based individual prognostic factors, toxicity management of novel therapeutics, survivorship, and updates in surgical oncology. The key takeaways of these sessions have been summarized in this conference report.

Academic poster design at a national conference: a need for standardised guidance?

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Academic posters are a common means of disseminating information at conferences. Presentation at conferences is frequently given weight in postgraduate training programme recruitment. Some conferences provide guidance for visual presentation of posters. For the Association of the Study of Medical Education (ASME) Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) 2015, poster abstract guidance was provided; however, the guidance on poster design was limited to size and orientation. The aim of this study was to investigate academic poster quality at a national medical education conference to identify where standards could be promoted and improved. Presentation at conferences is frequently given weight in postgraduate training programme recruitment METHODS: Six auditors assessed all posters displayed at the ASME ASM (15-17 July 2015) using guidelines based upon a modified checklist for academic posters. Ten criteria were agreed as assessment standards for poster design quality.RESULTS: One-hundred-and-eighty posters were assessed: 29 per cent had appropriate copyright for the materials displayed (n = 52); 41 per cent included suitable contact details (n = 73); 48 per cent (n = 87) had a text to graphic ratio of 50 : 50; 72 per cent (n = 130) met ASME guidance for layout and orientation; 76 per cent (n = 137) had appropriate referencing; 78 per cent showed evidence of proofreading for grammar and spelling (n = 140); 79 per cent (n = 142) were readable at a distance of 2 metres; and 87 per cent used appropriate academic logos (n = 156).DISCUSSION: There was variability in design quality as assessed by these criteria. We recommend that detailed guidance should be produced and disseminated by the organising conference. This may improve poster quality and aid in the communication of presented material. We aim to re-audit following the production and dissemination of poster presentation guidance.

Abstract:This study intends to fill in a gap through attempting to make available to readers and educators in the field of teaching English communication skills at tertiary level information on poster design, defense and assessment. This information is based on practical applications of the use of poster presentations by engineering students in a professional communication course for junior year engineers where there is a substantial focus on poster design, poster rhetorical structure, use of visuals, managing the presentation; coordination between team members, transition from one member into another, and written and oral communication skills. The poster presentation can be viewed as a pedagogical tool and as having considerable agency in promoting and enhancing students’ professional communication skills and meta-cognitive capacity. It places emphasis on team-role behaviors, giving credence to personal, inter-personal and team learning.

Abstract:In this general session, we will be discussing educational innovations in geriatric mental health implemented at the University of Connecticut Health Center, including relevant case studies. Sub sessions will include: 1. Medical student cognitive disorders elective, which takes a multidisciplinary approach to training 4th year UConn medical students in the assessment and management of cognitive disorders. Students work with geriatric psychiatrists, neuropsychologists and geriatricians in multiple settings including outpatient and facility settings- systemic differences between approach to treatment between various settings are discussed. Presenting medical student will review their experience with the elective. 2. Geriatric Fellowship Psychotherapy Track, which is a longitudinal track with various components including the curriculum, supervision, and clinical requirements. We will discuss how the curriculum was adapted to the individual needs of the fellow and how supervision influenced these adaptations. We will review a related case example and reflect on how the fellow applied the curriculum and supervision to patient interactions. Future directions, including possible research opportunities and a proposed curriculum outline, will also be discussed. 3. Medical student telepsychiatry elective, which provides a 4-week education opportunity for 4th year medical students to learn the basics of telepsychiatry visits for older adults, including remote cognitive assessments, treatment planning, psychotherapy, and medication management. Issues specific to older adults and virtual visits will be discussed, focusing on common challenges and possible solutions. Presenting student will discuss their experience with the elective including specific case study.

Abstract:A multi-disciplinary symposium on early-age onset cancer (EAOC) was held in October 2023 to explore challenges experienced by this rapidly growing population. A major outcome of the symposium was recognition of the remarkable similarities of EAOC patients' journeys across cancer sites. Prevention and early detection of cancer are hindered by a lack of awareness among patients and family doctors that cancer can and does occur in younger persons. Distinct characteristics of the disease—such as a later stage at diagnosis and more aggressive tumor biology—require more potent treatments, which result in profound physical and psychosocial consequences that are unique to this age group. EAOC patient empowerment emerged as another key theme of the symposium. The development of a greater number of specialized clinics was called for, and patient support groups were recognized for the vital role they play in empowering patients and their families. Leading-edge medical advancements hold tremendous hope across the spectrum of EAOC care. New technologies based on genomic profiling, immunotherapy and microbiome alteration contribute to the development of highly effective, personalized approaches to treatment. All symposium participants expressed their commitment to speak with one resounding voice to advocate for equitable access to leading care practices for EAOC patients; thus, a fourth symposium is planned for November 2024.
