Abstract:Although many heterocyclic N-donor ligands have shown excellent competence for separating actinides from lanthanides, an explanation for why some ligands work whereas others fail is very fundamental but greatly needs to be addressed for designing novel and efficient extractants. In this work, we systematically investigated four phenanthroline-derived ligands, DHDIPhen, BQPhen, Ph2-BTPhen and CyMe4-BTPhen, and their coordination geometrical properties and formation reactions with Am(iii) and Eu(iii) ions by quasi-relativistic density functional theory. The calculated hardness of ligands, which may help to determine their selectivity toward actinides and lanthanides, yielded an order, from the softest to the hardest, as follows: Ph2-BTPhen < CyMe4-BTPhen < BQPhen < DHDIPhen. It shows that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds and size of a ligand cavity are two dominant factors for metal-ion complexation. Natural population analysis (NPA) reveals that the 5d/6d orbitals of Eu/Am accept significantly more electrons than other orbitals, but partial density of states and molecular orbital analysis prove that the d orbitals with more accepted electrons have little contribution to the metal-ligand bonds. The thermodynamic results suggest that ligand protonation does have a great influence on the complexation of ligands with metal ions but does not change the selectivity of ligands toward metal ions. This work can help in-depth understanding the differences of selectivity of various structurally similar ligands and provide more theoretical insights for designing more innovative ligands for Ln/An separation.

Abstract:Understanding lanthanide coordination chemistry can help develop new ligands for more efficient separation of lanthanides for critical materials needs. The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) contains tens of thousands of single crystal structures of lanthanide complexes that can serve as a training ground for both fundamental chemical insights and future machine learning and generative artificial intelligence models. This work aims to understand the currently available structures of lanthanide complexes in CSD by analyzing the coordination shell, donor types, and ligand types, from the perspective of rare-earth element (REE) separations. We obtain four sets of lanthanide complexes from CSD: Subset 1, all Ln-containing complexes (49472 structures); Subset 2, mononuclear Ln complexes (27858 structures); Subset 3, mononuclear Ln complexes without cyclopentadienyl ligands (Cp) (26156 structures); Subset 4, Ln complexes with at least one 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or its derivative as a coordinating ligand (2226 structures). The subsequent analysis of lanthanide complexes in these subsets examines the trends in coordination numbers and first shell distances as well as identifies and characterizes the ligands and donor groups. In addition, examples of Ln-complexes with commercially available complexants and phen-based ligands are interrogated in detail. This systematic investigation lays the groundwork for future data-driven ligand designs for REE separations based on the structural insights into the lanthanide coordination chemistry.

Abstract:Metal-selective self-assembly with rare-earth cations is possible with suitable rigid, symmetrical bis-tridentate ligands. Kinetically controlled formation is initially observed, with smaller cations preferentially incorporated. Over time, the more thermodynamically favorable complexes with larger metals are formed. This thermodynamic control is a cooperative supramolecular phenomenon and only occurs upon multiple-metal-based self-assembly: single-metal ML3 analogues do not show reversible selectivity. The selectivity is dependent on small variations in lanthanide ionic radius and occurs despite identical coordination-ligand coordination geometries and minor size differences in the rare-earth metals.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of multiple rare‐earth‐metal complexes (Ln = Y, La, Ce, Sm, Lu) using tripodal N‐donor ligands, which offer the key advantage of featuring only C, H, O and N elements, facilitating incineration to recover the metal. The structural properties of the Ln3+ complexes were investigated by X‐ray diffraction, revealing that the ligands form complexes with a 1:1 ligand‐to‐metal ratio, with two of the three triflate anions coordinated to the metal centers in all cases. The coordination of the third triflate anion was found to be variable, as supported by various NMR spectroscopic investigations. Additionally, transitioning from the previously reported tris(hydrazonyl)thiophosphanyl (SP)‐based ligand system to the herein reported tris(2‐aminoethyl) amine (tren)‐anchored ligand system enhanced flexibility, resulting in improved encapsulation of the lanthanide ions. Competition studies between the two systems revealed selective coordination of the lutetium ion with the more flexible system. Thus, enhancing the flexibility of the ligand systems used for extraction has the potential to increase their efficiency.

Exceptional uranium(VI)-nitride triple bond covalency from 15N nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and quantum chemical analysis

Abstract:Abstract Determining the nature and extent of covalency of early actinide chemical bonding is a fundamentally important challenge. Recently, X-ray absorption, electron paramagnetic, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies have probed actinide-ligand covalency, largely confirming the paradigm of early actinide bonding varying from ionic to polarised-covalent, with this range sitting on the continuum between ionic lanthanide and more covalent d transition metal analogues. Here, we report measurement of the covalency of a terminal uranium(VI)-nitride by 15 N nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and find an exceptional nitride chemical shift and chemical shift anisotropy. This redefines the 15 N nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy parameter space, and experimentally confirms a prior computational prediction that the uranium(VI)-nitride triple bond is not only highly covalent, but, more so than d transition metal analogues. These results enable construction of general, predictive metal-ligand 15 N chemical shift-bond order correlations, and reframe our understanding of actinide chemical bonding to guide future studies.

Ligand additivity relationships enable efficient exploration of transition metal chemical space

Abstract:To accelerate exploration of chemical space, it is necessary to identify the compounds that will provide the most additional information or value. A large-scale analysis of mononuclear octahedral transition metal complexes deposited in an experimental database confirms an under-representation of lower-symmetry complexes. From a set of around 1000 previously studied Fe(II) complexes, we show that the theoretical space of synthetically accessible complexes formed from the relatively small number of unique ligands is significantly (ca. 816k) larger. For the properties of these complexes, we validate the concept of ligand additivity by inferring heteroleptic properties from a stoichiometric combination of homoleptic complexes. An improved interpolation scheme that incorporates information about cis and trans isomer effects predicts the adiabatic spin-splitting energy to around 2 kcal/mol and the HOMO level to less than 0.2 eV. We demonstrate a multi-stage strategy to discover leads from the 816k Fe(II) complexes within a targeted property region. We carry out a coarse interpolation from homoleptic complexes that we refine over a subspace of ligands based on the likelihood of generating complexes with targeted properties. We validate our approach on 9 new binary and ternary complexes predicted to be in a targeted zone of discovery, suggesting opportunities for efficient transition metal complex discovery.

Abstract:Evaluating the nature of chemical bonding for actinide elements represents one of the most important and long-standing problems in actinide science. We directly address this challenge and contribute a Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and relativistic density functional theory study that quantitatively evaluates An-Cl covalency in AnCl(6)(2-)(An(IV) = Th, U, Np, Pu). The results showed significant mixing between Cl 3p- and An(IV) 5f- and 6d-orbitals (t(1u)*/t(2u)* and t(2g)*/e(g)*), with the 6d-orbitals showing more pronounced covalent bonding than the 5f-orbitals. Moving from Th to U, Np, and Pu markedly changed the amount of M-Cl orbital mixing, such that An(IV) 6d- and Cl 3p-mixing decreased and metal 5f- and Cl 3p-orbital mixing increased across this series.
Tetradentate Ligand's Chameleon-Like Behavior Offers Recognition of Specific Lanthanides

Abstract:The surging demand for high-purity individual lanthanides necessitates the development of novel and exceptionally selective separation strategies. At the heart of these separation systems is an organic compound that, based on its structural features, selectively recognizes the lighter or heavier lanthanides in the trivalent lanthanide (Ln) series. This work emphasizes the significant implications resulting from modifying the donor group configuration within an N,O-based tetradentate ligand and the changes in the solvation environment of Ln ions in the process of separating Lns, with the unique ability to achieve peak selectivity in the light, medium, and heavy Ln regions. The structural rigidity of the bis-lactam-1,10-phenanthroline ligand enforces size-based selectivity, displaying an exceptional affinity for Lns having larger ionic radii such as La. Modifying the ligand by eliminating one preorganization element (phenanthroline → bipyridine) results in the fast formation of complexes with light Lns, but, in the span of hours, the peak selectivity shifts toward middle Ln (Sm), resulting in time-resolved separation. As expected, at low nitric acid concentrations, the neutral tetradentate ligand complexes with Ln3+ ions. However, the change in extraction mechanism is observed at high nitric acid concentrations, leading to the formation and preferential extraction of anionic heavy Ln species, [Ln(NO3)x+3]x-, that self-assemble with two ligands that have undergone protonation, forming intricate supramolecular architectures. The tetradentate ligand that is structurally balanced with restrictive and unrestrictive motifs demonstrates unique, controllable selectivity for light, middle, and heavy Lns, underscoring the pivotal role of solvation and ion interactions within the first and second coordination spheres.
Improving the theoretical description of Ln(III)/An(III) separation with phosphinic acid ligands: a benchmarking study of structure and selectivity

Abstract:The efficient separation of trivalent lanthanides from minor actinides with soft-donor ligands, while showing experimental promise, has theorists continuing to search for suitable approaches for describing and interpreting selectivity. To remedy this, we employ several computational methods in describing the structure of model M(H2PX2)3 complexes, with M = Eu and Am, and X = O, S, Se, and Te, and predicting the selectivity of model phosphinic acid ligands in Eu(III)/Am(III) separation. After first establishing a set of MP2 and CCSD(T)-DKH3 results as benchmarks, we evaluate several density functionals and descriptions of valence shells for their accuracy with respect to metal-ligand bonding and selectivity. We find that commonly employed functionals with a 0-27% range of exact exchange used with small-core effective core potentials or with an explicit treatment of the relativistic effects (DKH2) incorrectly predict a decrease in the metal-ligand bond distance in going from Eu(III) to Am(III) and completely fail to track a selectivity trend, even giving a wrong sign for some or all ligands. Surprisingly, when these functionals are used in conjunction with an f-in-core description of metal ions, the correct trend in selectivity is recovered, though Am-X distances are overestimated in relation to Eu-X. Functionals with high components of exact exchange (50%) and double-hybrid functionals are reasonably aligned with benchmark results, pointing to the problems of DFT with small exact exchange fractions to handle f-electrons. Natural bond orbital analyses reveal that these poorly performing functionals disproportionately overpopulate outer f orbitals in the model complexes. We anticipate that recommendations resulting from this work will lead to more accurate theoretical descriptions of lanthanide/actinide selectivity with soft-donor chalcogen-based ligands in the future.

Abstract:Interest in developing new ligand platforms beyond utilizing conventional elements like carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and phosphorus is growing. In particular, the heavier analogs of the lighter counterpart elements, such as germanium, tin, antimony, and bismuth, manifest distinct chemical properties and are progressively employed in creating new ligands for transition metal catalysis. This review addresses recent developments in ligands containing heavy elements from group 14 (Ge and Sn) and group 15 (As, Sb, and Bi) as coordinating atoms. It highlights the interactions between transition metals and these new ligands, comparing them with their lighter counterparts, and emphasizes the resulting differences in reactivity.

Abstract:Phenanthroline-diamide ligands have been reported in the selective separation of actinides over Eu(III); on the contrary, relevant basic coordination chemistry studies are still limited, and extraction under actual application conditions is rarely involved. In this work, N,N′-diethyl-N,N′-ditolyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline [Et-Tol-DAPhen (L)] was applied to explore the coordination performance of lanthanides in simulative high-level liquid waste. For the first time, cascade countercurrent extraction was conducted with Et-Tol-DAPhen as the extractant, which reveals the periodic tendency of the extraction efficiency of lanthanides to decrease gradually as the atomic number increases. Comparison of elements with similar radii verifies the hypothesis that the increase in the atomic number leads to a decrease in the ionic radius, thus reducing the coordination and extraction capacity of ligands. Slope analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and ultraviolet–visible titration results show that the ligand forms 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with lanthanides and the coordination ability follows the tendency of extraction efficiency, and the first crystal structures of Lns(III) with a phenanthroline-diamide ligand, i.e., [LaL(NO3)3(H2O)] and [LaL2(NO3)2][(NO3)], were obtained, which confirms the conclusions described above. Abstract:This paper explores the ligand field picture applied to organometallic compounds. Given the dearth of experimental data, the high-level ab initio ligand field theory (aiLFT) method is deployed as a surrogate for experiment and the necessary d orbital sequences and relative energies are obtained computationally. These are fitted to local cellular ligand field (CLF) σ, π and δ bonding parameters. Results are reported for planar [Cu(CR 3 ) 4 ] − , (R = F, H), octahedral M(CO) 6 n (M = Fe, Mn, Cr, V, Ti; n = +2, +1, 0, −1, −2), and the sandwich compounds M(Cp) 2 (Cp = cyclopentadienyl, M = Fe, Ni, V), [Ni(Cp) 2 ] 2+ and Cr(C 6 H 6 ) 2 . With respect to the aiLFT framework, these organometallic systems behave just like coordination complexes and most maintain the integrity of their formal d n configurations. Both [Cu(CR 3 ) 4 ] − compounds are formulated as low-spin d 8 Cu III species and have normal ligand fields consistent with their planar geometries. The metal carbonyls reveal a new way of counting valence electrons which only requires the CLF d orbital energy level diagram to rationalise the 18-electron rule as well as its many exceptions. The bonding in sandwich compounds shows a remarkable variation. In ferrocene, Cp − behaves as a strong field ligand, comparable to [CN] − in [Fe(CN) 6 ] 4− . Fe(Cp) 2 is low spin as is Cr(C 6 H 6 ) 2 . Cp − in Fe(Cp) 2 is a weak σ donor, strong π donor and weak δ acceptor while benzene in Cr(C 6 H 6 ) 2 is also a weak σ and strong π donor but is a much better δ acceptor. In contrast, Cp − is weak field in high spin, 20-electron Ni(Cp) 2 but 'ultra-covalent' in [Ni(Cp) 2 ] 2+ . The formal IV oxidation state is too high for the ligand set and the integrity of the d 6 configuration is lost. Similarly, [V(CO) 6 ] − and [Ti(CO) 6 ] 2− are ultra-covalent except now the formal metal oxidation states are too negative. Both mechanisms relate to the breaching of the metal's 3s 2 3p 6 'Pauli shield' and these ultra-covalent systems lie outside the ab initio ligand field regime. However, within the ligand field regime, the bonding in 'coordination complexes' and 'organometallic compounds' has the same conceptual footing and the nature of the local σ, π and δ interactions can be extracted from analysing the ligand field d orbitals.

Crystal Structure and Magnetism of Actinide Oxides: A Review

Abstract:In actinide systems, the 5f electrons experience a uniquely delicate balance of effects and interactions having similar energy scales, which are often difficult to properly disentangle. This interplay of factors such as the dual nature of 5f-states, strong electronic correlations, and strong spin-orbit coupling results in electronically unusual and intriguing behavior such as multi-k antiferromagnetic ordering, multipolar ordering, mott-physics, mixed valence configurations, and more. Despite the inherent allure of their exotic properties, the exploratory science of even the more basic, binary systems like the actinide oxides has been limited due to their toxicity, radioactivity, and reactivity. In this article, we provide an overview of the available synthesis techniques for selected binary actinide oxides, including the actinide dioxides, sesquioxides, and a selection of higher oxides. For these oxides, we also review and evaluate the current state of knowledge of their crystal structures and magnetic properties. In many aspects, substantial knowledge gaps exist in the current body of research on actinide oxides related to understanding their electronic ground states. Bridging these gaps is vital for improving not only a fundamental understanding of these systems but also of future nuclear technologies. To this end, we note the experimental techniques and necessary future investigations which may aid in better elucidating the nature of these fascinating systems.

Abstract:The methylation of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene in the distal 1,3-phenolic sites provides H2L = {p-tert-butylcalix[4](OMe)2(OH)2arene}. This unit acts as a rigid coordinating ligand to early and late lanthanide metal ions, enabling the construction of two families of mononuclear compounds featuring (N(nBu)4)[LnIIIL(acac)2]·CH3CN (Ln = Pr (1), Nd (2), Ho (3), and Er (4)) and (N(nBu)4)2[LnIIIL{Mo5O13(OMe)4(NO)}]·CH2Cl2 (Ln = Nd (5) and Er (6)). The metal ions adopt distorted bicapped trigonal prismatic coordination environments, resulting in slow relaxation of the magnetization for 4. These compounds exhibit reversible redox waves at positive potentials, centered within the calix[4]arene ligand, representing a new type of calix[n]arene-based electrochemical activity induced by coordination to the metal centers.

Abstract:Coordination chemistry trends across the periodic table are often difficult to probe experimentally due to limitations in finding a versatile but consistent chelating platform able to accommodate various elements without changing its coordination mode. Herein, we present new metal-ligand systems covering a wide range of ionic radii, charges, and elements. Five different ligands derived from the Keggin structure (HBW11O398-, PW11O397-, SiW11O399-, GeW11O399-, and GaW11O399-) were successfully crystalized with six different cations (Na+, Sr2+, Ba2+, La3+, Ce4+, Th4+) and characterized by single crystal XRD. Twenty-five new compounds were obtained by using Cs+ as counterion, yielding a consistent base formula of Csx[M(XW11O39)2]·nH2O. Despite having a similar first-coordination sphere geometry (i.e., 8-coordinated), the nature of the central cation was found to impact the long-range geometry of the complexes. This unique crystallographic dataset shows that, despite the traditional consensus, the local geometry of the cation (i.e., metal-oxygen bond distance) is not enough to depict the full impact of the complexed metal ion. The bending and twisting of the complexes, as well as ligand-ligand distances were all impacted by nature of the central cation. We also observed that counterions play a critical role by stabilizing the geometry of the M(XW11)2 complex and directing complex-complex interactions in the lattice. We also define certain structural limits for this type of complex, with the large Ba2+ ion seemingly approaching those limits. This study thus lays the ground for capturing the coordination chemistry of other, rarer, elements across the periodic table such as Ra2+, Ac3+, Bk4+, Cf3+, etc.
