Abstract:Europium-doped phosphate-based glasses possess unique properties that set them apart from other glass types, such as silicates, tellurides, and borates. These glasses have promising applications in photonics, LEDs, optoelectronics, lasers, and more. This study investigates the influence of europium doping on the optical and structural characteristics of synthesized glasses. Pure and europium-doped strontium phosphate glasses were prepared using the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the amorphous nature of all glass samples. Increasing europium content led to a decrease in the optical band gap energy, with a minimum of 5.62 eV observed for PSrEu1.5. The Urbach energy increased with higher europium concentrations. The refractive index values increase with europium concentration, indicating more non-bridging oxygen atoms (NBOs) in the glass network. Photoluminescence analysis revealed a prominent red emission peak at 611 nm, indicating the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition. Intensity parameters (Ω 2 ) and non-symmetric intensity ratio values indicated greater asymmetry of Eu 3+ ions and suggested covalent bonding between Eu and O. The excited-state lifetime of the 5 D 0 level in Eu 3+ ions exhibited exponential behavior. The synthesized glasses exhibited CIE 1931 color coordinates (x, y) close to the standard red color (0.67, 0.33), indicating pure and intense red emission. Overall, PSrEux glasses hold significant potential for applications in red laser technology.
