Abstract:Hierarchical micro/nanostructured MnO material is synthesized from a precursor of MnCO3 with olive shape that is obtained through a facile one-pot hydrothermal procedure. The hierarchical micro/nanostructured MnO is served as anode of lithium ion battery together with a cathode of spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O(4-δ) material, which is synthesized also from the precursor of MnCO3 with olive shape through a different calcination process. The structures and compositions of the as-prepared materials are characterized by TGA, XRD, BET, SEM, and TEM. Electrochemical tests of the MnO materials demonstrate that it exhibit excellent lithium storage property. The MnO material in a MnO/Li half cell can deliver a reversible capacity of 782.8 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at a rate of 0.13 C, and a stable discharge capacity of 350 mAh g(-1) at a high rate of 2.08 C. Based on the outstanding electrochemical property of the MnO material and the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O(4-δ) as well, the MnO/LiNi0.5Mn1.5O(4-δ) full cell has demonstrated a high discharge specific energy ca. 350 Wh kg(-1) after 30 cycles at 0.1 C with an average high working voltage at 3.5 V and a long cycle stability. It can release a discharge specific energy of 227 Wh kg(-1) after 300 cycles at a higher rate of 0.5 C. Even at a much higher rate of 20 C, the MnO/LiNi0.5Mn1.5O(4-δ) full cell can still deliver a discharge specific energy of 145.5 Wh kg(-1). The excellent lithium storage property of the MnO material and its high performance as anode in the MnO/LiNi0.5Mn1.5O(4-δ) lithium ion battery is mainly attributed to its hierarchical micro/nanostructure, which could buffer the volume change and shorten the diffusion length of Li(+) during the charge/discharge processes.

Abstract:5-MnO2 (K0.44Mn2O4 center dot 1.5H2O) hierarchical nanoflowers self-assembled with nanosheets were synthesized via a template-free hydrothermal route by using a mixture suspension of KMnO4 and MnSO4 center dot H2O as precursors. The primary 5-MnO2 nanosheets spread along (001) plane with a thickness of ca. 2-5 nm. It is argued that the intercalations of K+ ions and water molecules among the interlayers of MnO6 octahedrons make the layered lattice structure of 5-MnO2 much stable, resulting in the 5-MnO2 hierarchical nanoflowers. The enlarged interlayer spacings effectively activate the storage of Zn2+ ions in the 5-MnO2 hierarchical nanoflowers. As cathodes for aqueous zinc ion batteries, thus, the 5-MnO2 hierarchical nanoflowers exhibit excellent electrochemical performances. The Zn//5-MnO2 battery can deliver a high specific capacity of 293.6 mAh/g at a current density of 0.3 A/g and still maintains 217.8 mAh/g after 100 cycles. Besides, a high rate capacity of 84.6 mAh/g can be achieved at 3 A/g. It is believed that but for the promotion of Zn2+ ions diffusion by expanding interlayer spacings, the high specific area and mesoporous structure of the hierarchical architecture of the 5-MnO2 nanoflowers strongly improve the electrochemical performances through fully contacting with the electrolytes.
Morphology-conserved Transformation: Synthesis of Hierarchical Mesoporous Nanostructures of Mn2O3 and the Nanostructural Effects on Li-ion Insertion/deinsertion Properties

Abstract:By means of morphology-conserved transformation, we have synthesized hierarchically structured Mn2O3 nanomaterials with different morphologies and pore structures. The key step of this method consists of the formation of a precursor containing the target materials interlaced with the judiciously chosen polyol-based organic molecules, which are subsequently knocked out to generate the final nanomaterials. In the present work, two kinds of precursor morphologies, oval-shaped and straw-sheaf-shaped, have been selectively prepared by hydrothermal treatment of different functional polyol molecules (oval-shape with fructose and straw-sheaf-shape with β-cyclodextrin) and potassium permanganate. Thermal decomposition of the precursors resulted in the formation of mesoporous Mn2O3 maintaining the original morphologies, as revealed by extensive characterization. These novel hierarchical nanostructures with different pore sizes/structures prompted us to examine their potential as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The electrochemical results with reference to LIBs show that both of our mesoporous Mn2O3 nanomaterials deliver high reversible capacities and excellent cycling stabilities at a current density of 200 mA g−1 compared to the commercial Mn2O3 nanoparticles. Moreover, the straw-sheaf-shaped Mn2O3 exhibits a higher specific capacity and a better cycling performance than the oval-shaped one, due to the relatively higher surface area and the peculiar nanostrip structure resulting in the reduced length for lithium ion diffusion. Morphology-conserved transformation yields two kinds of hierarchical mesoporous Mn2O3 nanomaterials with high capacities and cycling stabilities for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Transition metal oxide based anodes with high capacities and long cycle lifetimes are considered promising candidates to substitute the conventional graphite electrodes with a relatively low capacity. In this work, hierarchical Mn3O4 microplates with a lateral size of approximately 4.9 mu m, composed of stacking porous nanosheets with thicknesses as small as 10nm, were synthesized by using a precursor conversion method. Such a nanosheet stacking arrangement possesses an unusual concave structure with a tight center and loose edge. Owing to the highly open hierarchical structure and good electronic conductivity from the insitu carbon, the as-obtained hierarchical Mn3O4 microplate electrode exhibits remarkable cyclability up to 300 cycles at 500mAg(-1), accompanied with good rate capability (418mAhg(-1) at 2Ag(-1)).

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of a novel cobalt oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) hierarchical nanostructure, in which crystalline core-amorphous shell Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles with a bimodal size distribution are uniformly dispersed on ultrathin Co 3 O 4 nanosheets. When tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared Co 3 O 4 hierarchical electrodes delivered high lithium storage properties comparing to the other Co 3 O 4 nanostructures, including a high reversible capacity of 1053.1 mAhg −1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C (1 C = 890 mAg −1 ), good cycling stability and rate capability.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Hierarchical CoxMn3-xO4 array micro-/nanostructures with tunable morphology and composition have been grown on conductive stainless steel with robust adhesion by a facile solvothermal route and a subsequent annealing treatment. By simply controlling the volume ratio of components in the mixed solvent, the morphology of the products can be tailored from hierarchical nanowires to nanosheets. Benefitting from the unique structural features, the resultant CoMn2O4 nanowires and MnCo2O4 nanosheets exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with remarkable specific capacities (540-207 mA h g(-1)) at various current rates (1-10 C) and good cycling stability for highly reversible lithium storage. The enhanced electrochemical performance suggests their promising use as integrated binder-free electrodes for microscale lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Rational morphology design is of great significance for achieving superior cycling performance and rate capability for lithium-ion batteries. Here we designed and fabricated hierarchical MnO@C hollow nanospheres (HNSs) consisting of nitrogen-doped carbon outer shells and MnO hollow spheres composed of ultrathin MnO nanosheets. The hierarchical hollow structures provided abundant active sites for lithium storage while accommodating the volume change, leading to high reversible capacity and rate performance. The graphitic carbon shells improved the electrical conductivity and restricted the volume expansion of MnO, which helped to achieve enhanced cycling stability and improved rate capability. When used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the hierarchical MnO@C HNSs retained a capacity of 839 mAh g(-1) after 900 cycles at 1 A g(-1). The excellent electrochemical performance of these MnO@C HNSs may be attributed to the synergetic effects of the hierarchical hollow structure and the conductive carbon coating layer. This work provided a controllable approach toward hierarchical hollow structures of desired hybrid materials for high-performance electrodes.

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-structured two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet is favorable for electrochemical reactions. The unique structure not only exposes the maximized active sites and shortens ion/electron diffusion channels, but also inhibits the structural strain during cycling processes. Herein, we report the hierarchical flower-like pure spinel manganese-based oxide nanosheets synthesized via a template-orientated strategy. The oriented template is fabricated by decomposition of carbonate obtained from "bubble reaction" via an alcohol-assisted hydrothermal process. The resultant spinel manganese-based oxide nanosheets simultaneously possess excellent rate capability and cycling stability. The high-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO-HF) has a uniform phase distribution without the common impurity phase LixNi1-xO2 and NixO. Besides, the LNMO-HF delivers high discharge capacity of 142.6 mA h g-1 with specific energy density of 660.7 W h kg-1 at 1 C under 55°C. More importantly, the template-orientated strategy can be extended to the synthesis of LiMn2O4 (LMO), which can achieve 88.12% capacity retention after 1000 cycles.

Abstract:Spinel LiMn2O4 is a widely utilized cathode material for Li-ion batteries. However, its applications are limited by its poor energy density and power density. Herein, a novel hierarchical porous onion-like LiMn2O4(LMO) was prepared to shorten the Li+ diffusion pathway with the presence of uniform pores and nanosized primary particles. The growth mechanism of the porous onion-like LiMn2O4 was analyzed to control the morphology and the crystal structure so that it forms a polyhedral crystal structure with reduced Mn dissolution. In addition, graphene was added to the cathode (LiMn2O4/graphene) to enhance the electronic conductivity. The synthesized LiMn2O4/graphene exhibited an ultrahigh-rate performance of 110.4 mAh·g–1 at 50 C and an outstanding energy density at a high power density, maintaining 379.4 Wh·kg–1 at 25,293 W·kg–1. Besides, it shows durable stability, with only 0.02% decrease in the capacity per cycle at 10 C. Furthermore, the (LiMn2O4/graphene)/graphite full-cell exhibited a high discharge capacity. This work provides a promising method for the preparation of outstanding, integrated cathodes for potential applications in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Manganese oxides have always been considered as promising high-performance electrodes due to the high specific capacity, low cost, and environmental benignity. Here, we have synthesized a hierarchical manganese oxide hydrate for superior lithium-ion battery anode via a facile liquid precipitation reaction and low-temperature heat treatment. The 2D layered structure with hydration water provides a smooth ion transfer path, while the porous hierarchical architecture constructed of nanosheets with high surface area increases active contact areas, Li+ transportation channels, and structural stability. Upon cycling, the oxidation of manganese and enhanced reaction kinetics can further contribute to the obvious rising capacity, cycling stability, and high-rate capability. Therefore, the manganese oxide hydrate can directly be the desirable products as superior electrodes without high-temperature heat treatment. The comprehensive utilization of structural hydration and hierarchical design offers more insights into the electrochemical reaction mechanisms and more possibilities to develop new materials for lithium-ion batteries.
MOF-Derived Hierarchical MnO-Doped Fe3O4@C Composite Nanospheres with Enhanced Lithium Storage.

Abstract:Hierarchically nanostructured binary/multiple transition-metal oxides with electrically conductive coatings are very attractive for lithium-ion batteries owing to their excellent electrochemical properties induced by their unique compositions and microstructures. Herein, hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres are prepared by a simple one-step annealing in Ar atmosphere, using Mn-doped Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Mn-doped MIL-53(Fe)) as precursor. The MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite particles have a uniform nanosphere structure with a diameter of ∼100 nm, and each nanosphere is composed of clustered primary nanoparticles with an amorphous carbon shell, forming a unique hierarchical nanoarchitecture. The as-prepared hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres exhibit markedly enhanced lithium-storage performance, with a large capacity of 1297.5 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 200 mA g-1. The cycling performance is clarified through analyzing the galvanostatic discharge/charge voltage profiles and electrochemical impedance spectra at different cycles. The unique microstructures and Mn element doping of the hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres lead to their enhanced lithium-storage performance.

Green and Rational Design of 3D Layer-by-Layer MnO x Hierarchically Mesoporous Microcuboids from MOF Templates for High-Rate and Long-Life Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Rational design and delicate control on the textural properties of metal-oxide materials for diverse structure-dependent applications still remain formidable challenges. Here, we present an eco-friendly and facile approach to smartly fabricate three-dimensional (3D) layer-by-layer manganese oxide (MnO x) hierarchical mesoporous microcuboids from a Mn-MOF-74-based template, using a one-step solution-phase reaction scheme at room temperature. Through the controlled exchange of metal-organic framework (MOF) ligand with OH- in alkaline aqueous solution and in situ oxidation of manganese hydroxide intermediate, the Mn-MOF-74 template/precursor was readily converted to Mn3O4 or δ-MnO2 counterpart consisting of primary nanoparticle and nanosheet building blocks, respectively, with well-retained morphology. By X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption analysis and other techniques, their crystal structure, detailed morphology, and microstructure features were unambiguously revealed. Specifically, their electrochemical Li-ion insertion/extraction properties were well evaluated, and it turns out that these unique 3D microcuboids could achieve a sustained superior lithium-storage performance especially at high rates benefited from the well-orchestrated structural characteristics (Mn3O4 microcuboids: 890.7, 767.4, 560.1, and 437.1 mAh g-1 after 400 cycles at 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 A g-1, respectively; δ-MnO2 microcuboids: 991.5, 660.8, 504.4, and 362.1 mAh g-1 after 400 cycles at 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 A g-1, respectively). To our knowledge, this is the most durable high-rate capability as well as the highest reversible capacity ever reported for pure MnO x anodes, which even surpass most of their hybrids. This facile, green, and economical strategy renews the traditional MOF-derived synthesis for highly tailorable functional materials and opens up new opportunities for metal-oxide electrodes with high performance.

Abstract:In recent years, global warming and the energy crisis have accelerated the development of electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, which has put forward an ever-growing demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with even higher power density and longer cycle life. [ 1 ] The electrochemical performances of the electrode materials are strongly dependent on their sizes, morphologies, and structures; therefore, to meet the requirements, many efforts have been devoted to designing novel nanostructured electrode materials. Extensive research has proved that nanomaterials can achieve higher specifi c capacity and better cyclability compared with their bulky counterparts, due to the decreased diffusion lengths, enhanced kinetics and large ionic contact area. [ 1a , 2 ] Owing to their high surface energy, nanoparticles however tend to self-aggregate, which reduces the effective contact areas among the active materials, conductive reagent, and electrolyte. Abstract:Hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) vanadium oxide microstructures, including urchin-like microflowers, nanohorn-structured microspheres, nanosheet-assembled microflowers, and nanosheets bundles, are successfully synthesized by a versatile template-free solvothermal method. It is found that the concentration of the precursor (VOC(2)O(4)) solution has a significant effect on the morphologies of the products. As an example, the time-dependent phase and morphology evolution for the urchin-like vanadium oxide microflowers has been investigated in detail. Urchin-like VO(2) microflowers can be self-assembled within 2 h without using any surfactants. After calcination, the VO(2) microflowers can be easily transformed to urchin-like V(2)O(5) microstructures. The as-obtained V(2)O(5) microflowers are highly porous with a specific surface area of 33.64 m(2) g(-1). When evaluated as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, the V(2)O(5) sample delivers very high specific discharge capacity of 267 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 300 mA g(-1). Further, it also exhibits improved cycling stability. The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to multiple advantageous structural features, including the nanosized building blocks, high porosity, and the 3D hierarchical microstructures.
Facile Fabrication of Hierarchical LiMnPO4 Microspheres for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries Cathode

Abstract:Developing advanced cathode materials to achieve the high-power applications is an important technology for the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, hierarchical LiMnPO4 microspheres are designed and fabricated using MnCO3 microspheres as the self-sacrificial template. The novel hierarchical structure with high tap density and more exposed active sites is favorable for the electrolyte penetration and also provides sufficient contact areas for fast Li-ion intercalation and deintercalation reaction. In addition, the uniform thin carbon layer extending from the interior to the outside of the LiMnPO4 microsphere, could further construct a conductive and robust carbon network, which will inevitably accelerate the transport of electrons and improve the discharge capacity. Specifically, a high reversibility capacity of 158.4 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 C and 104.3 mAh g(-1) at 5 C is achieved. Furthermore, the superior capacity retention with 98% after 200 cycles at 5 C is maintained, revealing an excellent cycle stability. Abstract:Metal molybdates inherit the characteristics of polyoxometalates (POMs) and have been widely used in the fields of catalysis, photoluminescence and energy storage. However, well construction of hierarchical molybdate nanostructures towards superior performance has still retained a critical challenge. Herein, hierarchical manganese molybdate (MnMoO4) nanocauliflowers are tailored from aggregated microrods utilizing dopamine as a scissor at room temperature. Meanwhile, a uniform and robust carbon coating layer can be introduced after a simple calcination. The fabricated MnMoO4/C nanocauliflowers exhibit excellent electrochemical properties as anodes for both lithium/sodium ion half/full batteries. The boosted discharge specific capacities and rate capabilities of MnMoO4/C (994 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and 487 mAh g−1 at 2.0 A g−1 for lithium ion battery and 296 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and 148 mAh g−1 at 2.0 A g−1 for sodium ion battery) are better than those of bare MnMoO4. Notably, the stable and sustainable cyclic property with 1500 times for lithium ion battery and 5000 times for sodium ion battery without obvious capacity fading is much superior to the state-of-art results of many other reported molybdates. This simple yet effective strategy demonstrates the feasibility of simultaneous structure engineering and surface modification of molybdates.

Abstract:ZnMnO3 has attracted enormous attention as a novel anode material for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity. However, it suffers from capacity fading because of the large volumetric change during cycling. Here, porous ZnMnO3 yolk-shell microspheres are developed through a facile and scalable synthesis approach. This ZnMnO3 can effectively accommodate the large volume change upon cycling, leading to an excellent cycling stability. When applying this ZnMnO3 as the anode in lithium-ion batteries, it shows a remarkable reversible capacity (400 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 400 mA g(-1) and 200 mA h g(-1) at 6400 mA g(-1)) and excellent cycling performance (540 mA h g(-1) after 300 cycles at 400 mA g(-1)) due to its unique structure. Furthermore, a novel conversion reaction mechanism of the ZnMnO3 is revealed: ZnMnO3 is first converted into intermediate phases of ZnO and MnO, after which MnO is further reduced to metallic Mn while ZnO remains stable, avoiding the serious pulverization of the electrode brought about by lithiation of ZnO.
