Abstract:Brain health is essential for physical and mental health, social well-being, productivity, and creativity. Current neurological research focuses mainly on treating a diseased brain and preventing further deterioration rather than on developing and maintaining brain health. The pandemic has forced a shift toward virtual working environments that accelerated opportunities for transdisciplinary collaboration for fostering brain health among neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, neuro and socio-behavioral scientists, scholars in arts and humanities, policymakers, and citizens. This could shed light on the interconnectedness of physical, mental, environmental, and socioeconomic determinants of brain disease and health. We advocate making brain health the top priority worldwide, developing common measures and definitions to enhance research and policy, and finding the cause of the decline of incidence of stroke and dementia in some countries and then applying comprehensive customized cost-effective prevention solutions in actionable implementation units. Life cycle brain health offers the best single individual, communal, and global investment.

The effectiveness of mindfulness-based intervention for college students with academic crisis: A mixed method study

Abstract:Objective The academic crisis of college students has drawn extensive attention from universities and society. Academic crisis is often related to self-control, emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships. However, college students with academic crisis often have difficulty solving these problems on their own, and thus need intervention. Methods In this study, a mindfulness-based intervention was designed and evaluated by a mixed method research of pre-post-test and content analysis. Results This study found that this intervention significantly improved participants'' level of mindfulness and self-control, and significantly reduced their level of social anxiety and general anxiety. Conclusion This study showed that it is feasible to intervene college students'' academic crisis using mindfulness-based intervention, which is worth further exploration.

Abstract:In this essay written with my students and collaborators in mind, I share simple recipes that are easy and often fun to put in practice and that make a big difference in one's life. The seven guiding principles are: (1) sleep, (2) love and sex, (3) deep breathing and daily exercises, (4) water and chewing, (5) fruits, unrefined products, food combination, vitamin D and no meat, (6) power foods, (7) play, intrinsic motivation, positive psychology and will. These simple laws are based on an integration of evolutionary thinking, personal experimentation, and evidence from experiments reported in the scientific literature. I develop their rationality, expected consequences and describe briefly how to put them in practice. I hope that professionals and the broader public may also find some use for it, as I have seen already the positive impacts on some of my students.

Abstract:Due to the shift of civilization from the Industrial Age to the Information Age, mathematical literacy has become a necessity in the twenty-first century. However, in order to learn and contribute to the mathematical community, one has to be in a state of good mental health. When I say 'good mental health,' I mean one has to develop a set of healthy coping strategies, be in a positive learning environment, and have a social support system. Traditionally, universities have been the venue of such higher learning. If these institutions want to remain as thriving grounds for higher education and engines of research, post-secondary institutions need to be aware of these factors and actively contribute to the well-being of its students and faulty. Unfortunately, students do not always receive the support necessary to be mentally healthy. The purpose of this paper is to examine how social awareness and sensitivity of mental health in a university setting is a key component for individuals to flourish academically and grow personally. Several voluntary surveys completed by my first and second year math students at the University of Waterloo will be presented. The surveys investigated the students' experiences at the university, particularly in the Mathematics Department. In addition, this paper explores an alternative way to structure math classes, specifically assignment scheduling, in order to help students develop healthy study habits. The scores for the alternative-scheduled assignments are statistically analyzed and compared to scores of the typical-scheduled assignments currently implemented at the University of Waterloo. Finally, this paper briefly discusses the importance of socialization, specifically for young mathematicians and scientists, and potential consequences of reduced social exposure in the Digital Age.
Supporting a mentally healthy place of study: Examining the relationship between mental well‐being, stress, and protective factors among university students

Abstract:Introduction Students can expect to experience stressors associated with their studies that can have detrimental effects on their mental well‐being if not properly managed. Drawing on a positive psychology paradigm, protective factors can help students to counter study‐related stressors and contribute to their mental well‐being and academic success. The relationship between protective factors, such as maintaining perspective and building networks, with stress severity and positive mental well‐being was examined in a sample of Australian university students undertaking postgraduate coursework. Methods Students completed a survey measuring stress from the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS), positive mental well‐being from the Short Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well‐being Scale (SWEMWBS), and seven protective factors from the Resilience at University (RAU) scale. Bivariate correlations were calculated for the RAU protective factors with stress and mental well‐being. ANOVA examined the RAU protective factors in relation to mental well‐being and stress severity groupings. Results All seven protective factors had a positive and significant relationship with positive mental well‐being, and six of the seven protective factors had a negative and significant relationship with stress. A statistically significant difference was found for six of the seven RAU protective factors according to mental well‐being group, and three of the seven RAU protective factors group according to stress severity group. A linear effect emerged between level of protective factor and mental well‐being group, with participants in the high well‐being group having the highest level of protective factors. Conclusion Universities should focus on the development of protective factors to support students' well‐being and help them to flourish in their studies.

Abstract:There is increasing pressure within universities to address student mental health. From a whole university or settings-based perspective, this could include curriculum-embedded approaches. There is little research about how this should work or what approaches might be most effective. Semi -structured interviews were conducted with fifty-seven undergraduate students from five disciplines (Psychology, English studies, Nursing, International Politics, and War Studies) to understand students' perspectives. Students reflected on wellbeing module content and, more broadly, on curriculum processes (teaching, pedagogy, assessment) within their degree. Reflexive thematic analysis was applied to transcripts, generating three themes: embedding wellbeing in the curriculum; assessment, challenge, and academic support; and social connection and interaction. The findings provide evidence for teaching, pedagogy, and assessment practices supporting higher education student wellbeing. These align with recommended good teaching practices, such as considering appropriate assessment methods followed by effective feedback. Students saw the benefits of being academically challenged if scaffolded appropriately. Strong peer connection, teacher-student interaction, and communication were crucial to learning and wellbeing. These findings provide implications for future curriculum design that can support learning and wellbeing.

Abstract:Over the years, I have worked in a variety of research groups and learnt from great scientists with different approaches. There is no 10-step plan for success in research, particularly when you are researching the unknown! But there are many paths to leading a rewarding career in scientific research and adopting practices from successful scientists has helped me navigate my own career. Here, I compile some of the advice on doing research that I explicitly or implicitly received during my undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty years and use to this day. This is the same advice I give my own students. Some of these points are fairly obvious; others I wish I had implemented earlier in my own career. Abstract:A wealth of evidence has indicated that both students and teachers experience high levels of stress, burnout, and ultimately compromised well-being in the university context. Although numerous studies have investigated well-being among university students, and other studies have addressed well-being among university teachers, these lines of research are often conducted in isolation from one another. This is surprising, as the importance of considering reciprocal links between students and teachers has been suggested in several empirical studies. Additionally, when researching well-being in academia, the conceptualizations tend to differ from study-to-study. The present research therefore investigated how students and teachers conceptualize well-being at the university based on their personal experiences, as well as how student and teacher well-being interact. To examine this, six university students (50% female), and ten teachers (50% female) from Germany and the Netherlands participated in semi-structured interviews. Qualitative analysis using a multistage coding process revealed detailed insights concerning students' and teachers' perceptions of well-being that coincided with positive psychology, resilience, multifaceted, and basic psychological need fulfillment approaches. Moreover, an interaction between students' and teachers' well-being became apparent, including several factors such as the student-teacher relationship that in turn, contributed to both population's well-being. The present findings lend evidence toward a more coherent conceptualization of well-being and are discussed in terms of suggestions for initiatives that simultaneously support both populations, for example, through the student-teacher relationship.

Abstract:Background: Worsening mental health of students in higher education is a public policy concern and the impact of measures to reduce transmission of COVID-19 has heightened awareness of this issue. Preventing poor mental health and supporting positive mental wellbeing needs to be based on an evidence informed understanding what factors influence the mental health of students. Objectives: To identify factors associated with mental health of students in higher education. Methods: We undertook a systematic review of observational studies that measured factors associated with student mental wellbeing and poor mental health. Extensive searches were undertaken across five databases. We included studies undertaken in the UK and published within the last decade (2010-2020). Due to heterogeneity of factors, and diversity of outcomes used to measure wellbeing and poor mental health the findings were analysed and described narratively. Findings: We included 31 studies, most of which were cross sectional in design. Those factors most strongly and consistently associated with increased risk of developing poor mental health included students with experiences of trauma in childhood, those that identify as LGBTQ and students with autism. Factors that promote wellbeing include developing strong and supportive social networks. Students who are prepared and able to adjust to the changes that moving into higher education presents also experience better mental health. Some behaviours that are associated with poor mental health include lack of engagement both with learning and leisure activities and poor mental health literacy. Conclusion: Improved knowledge of factors associated with poor mental health and also those that increase mental wellbeing can provide a foundation for designing strategies and specific interventions that can prevent poor mental health and ensuring targeted support is available for students at increased risk.
Psychological and lifestyle predictors of mental health in higher education: how healthy are our students?

Abstract:Purpose The continued increase in mental health problems in students in higher education is a global public health concern. This study aims to examine the predictors of mental health in the context of higher education, focusing on first-year female undergraduate students as a particularly vulnerable group. Design/methodology/approach Two hundred first-year female undergraduates from a UK Higher Education Institution took part in a quantitative survey. Participants completed a range of questionnaires assessing resilience, perceived stress, levels of depression, hope, general anxiety and levels of exercise. Findings Two significant individual predictors of depression were identified: perceived stress and resilience. A mediation analysis showed that resilience acted as mediator for the impact of stress on depression. Two significant individual predictors of anxiety were identified: stress and exercise. There were no significant mediators. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time a range of psychological and lifestyle predictors of mental health while exploring potential mediators have been investigated. From the findings, the authors suggest that psychoeducational interventions targeting resilience while also providing problem-solving strategies could augment internal resources and promote positive mental health in this particularly vulnerable group of young people.
How Perfectionism, Procrastination and Parenting Styles Impact Students Mental Health and How Mindfulness and Self-Compassion May be the Antidote

Abstract:The mental health of students in higher education is of major concern, given the high levels of psychological distress that is known to exist amongst this cohort. In this literature review, evidence is presented based on research across three decades: it reveals a link between insecure attachment bonding in early childhood to maladaptive perfectionism as a means to feel worthy, oftentimes leading to procrastination as an unhelpful strategy to avoid the anxiety of possibly not meeting expectations. As a result, the student may experience conflicting “parts”—the part that wants to achieve high standards and the part that appears to self-sabotage—and this internal conflict appears to lead to high levels of shame, anxiety and depression. The mediator showing to effectively manage the cycle of shame that ensues when these “parts” are engaged is mindfulness and self-compassion. Suggestions for how to create a non-shaming, safe and encouraging environment include workshops that teach students and teachers about the autonomic nervous system and how to self-regulate emotions through the use of mindfulness and self-compassion techniques. As the research reveals, creating safety is the key to good outcomes both academically and from a mental health perspective.

Abstract:A psychoeducational intervention (Keep your brain fit!) was designed for the middle-aged and older working population. The intervention focuses on increasing knowledge and awareness about cognitive ageing and teaching strategies to cope with cognitive changes. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the e-health intervention in terms of subjective cognitive functioning. As secondary aims, objective cognitive functioning and psychological well-being were also measured. A randomised controlled trial that included people aged 40 to 65 years was conducted. A maximum of 4 weeks was allowed to complete the intervention. The outcome measures were obtained from an online test battery that was administered at baseline, post-test and at 4-week follow-up. A total of 376 participants completed the whole study. After the intervention, the experimental group reported more feelings of stability concerning memory functioning and perceived greater locus of control over memory compared to the control group. These effects were maintained at the 4-week follow-up. Taking into account the relatively low costs and easy accessibility of this e-health intervention, we consider the programme to be a valuable contribution to public healthcare interventions for middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract:Universities must prepare students for a complex world, but current mental health levels impair student outcomes. Increased concern over student wellbeing has fostered the demand for positive education interventions – a relatively new topic requiring more research. We tested a positive psychology wellbeing intervention imbedded in undergraduate psychology classes with three studies and 469 participants. Intervention outcomes across three years indicate improvements in wellbeing, positive affect, negative affect and clinical wellbeing categories. Comparisons with an active control indicated the intervention buffered against semester stress. Practice frequency had little effect on wellbeing, however wellbeing gains were higher for students with low baseline wellbeing and those who valued happiness more – suggesting positive education interventions have greater value for some students. This research has important implications for student wellbeing, indicating that imbedded wellbeing programs can improve student wellbeing with minimal resources and low stigma.

Abstract:First-year international tertiary students face numerous challenges, with the COVID-19 pandemic shifting many to online learning. These challenges can lead to higher than ideal stress and anxiety, negatively impacting mental health. Applying a 'writing across curriculum' approach this study examines whether a 'writing in discipline' intervention influences stress/anxiety for such students studying Tourism, Hospitality and Events in Australia. A modified DASS was administered to four cohorts during 2020 and 2021, and pre-post-tests conducted. The intervention helped buffer significant increases in stress, promoted skill development, and enhanced academic confidence. This scaffolded-learning approach is applicable at course/subject, degree, and university levels.
MAP Train My Brain: Meditation Combined with Aerobic Exercise Reduces Stress and Rumination While Enhancing Quality of Life in Medical Students

Abstract:Medical students must commit a great deal of concentration and energy during their first 2 years of study, leaving minimal time for self-care. However, once they become physicians, they are in the position of instructing their patients to engage in self-care. Objectives: In this study, first- and second-year medical students participated in a combined mental and physical (MAP) training program with meditation and aerobic exercise that targeted brain health.* Design: Each weekly session began with 30 min of instructional training that emphasized the benefit of the program for brain and body health, followed by 30 min of silent meditation, and ending with 30 min of aerobic exercise. Participants monitored their heart rate to achieve 60%-80% of their personal maximum. Participants engaged in one additional session of MAP training each week on their own. Location and Subjects: First- and second-year medical students were recruited to be participants from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) in Piscataway, NJ. Outcome measures: Participants completed questionnaires of depressive symptoms, perceived stress, ruminative thoughts, and quality of life, before and after the training approximately 8-9 weeks apart. Results: After 8 weeks of training and in contrast to students who did not participate (n = 30), the medical students who completed at least 14 sessions out of 16 (n = 17) reported significantly fewer ruminations (-17%), including depressive (-16%) and brooding ruminations (-24%). Ruminations are repetitive thoughts that are typically negative in nature and associated with symptoms of depression. The medical students also reported greater quality of life at the end of training and less perceived stress. The majority (84%) would recommend these types of practices and this one in particular to their future patients. Conclusions: Previous studies have demonstrated that MAP training can reduce symptoms of depression as well as trauma-related cognitions, while increasing oxygen consumption and synchronized brain activity during cognitive control procedures. Overall, MAP training offers a time-efficient and evidence-based means of maintaining mental and physical wellness for students during medical school and into their future, as well as their patients alike.
Improving university students' mental health using multi-component and single-component sleep interventions: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:University is a time of significant transitions during a young adult's life, with delayed and shortened sleep and poor mental health a common occurrence. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effect of both multi-component and single-component sleep interventions on improving university students' sleep and mental health. Five databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL and Cochrane Library) were searched for relevant literature published until April 2022. Treatment studies including university students aged 18–24 years, participating in a sleep intervention (multi-component, e.g., CBT-I, or single-component, e.g., sleep hygiene) were eligible. Comparator groups were either active, i.e., alternative intervention, or passive, i.e., waitlist control or treatment-as-usual, with study outcomes to include measures of sleep and mental health. Of 3435 references screened, 11 studies involving 5267 participants, with and without insomnia symptoms, were included for a narrative synthesis on intervention designs and methodology. Six studies eligible for meta-analyses showed a moderate effect of sleep interventions in reducing sleep disturbance (SMD = −0.548 [CI: −0.837, −0.258]) at post-treatment, alongside a small effect in improving anxiety (SMD = −0.226 [CI: −0.421, −0.031]) and depression (SMD = −0.295 [CI: −0.513, −0.077]). Meta-regression examining study and intervention characteristics identified subpopulation (experiencing insomnia or not) as a significant moderator for effects on sleep ( p = 0.0003) and depression ( p = 0.0063), with larger effects in studies with participants experiencing insomnia. Comparison group type (active or passive) was also a significant moderator ( p = 0.0474), with larger effects on sleep in studies using passive comparison groups. Study type, delivery format, and intervention duration were not identified as significant moderators. At follow-ups, small but significant effects were sustained for anxiety and depression. Protecting and promoting sleep amongst university students may help safeguard and advance mental health.

Being able to think when caught in the maelstrom - how adolescents used mindfulness when facing exams

Abstract:Purpose: Research indicates that exam anxiety may decline with mindfulness-based interventions but there is a lack of research on adolescents' accounts of the processes involved. We explored high-school students' descriptions of how they perceived and applied mindfulness in managing anxiety-inducing thoughts related to academic performance following an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course. Method: Post-course individual semi-structured interviews with 22 high school students (2 males, mean age 17.8 years) were transcribed verbatim and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The analyses identified six themes: (1) Noticing and attending to the attention-binding "maelstrom" of anxious thoughts and feelings (2) Attending to the breath to cope with the maelstrom, (3) "removing" and "getting rid of" anxious thoughts (4) Being able to "think" (5) awareness of more helpful thoughts, and (6) Agency and control. The findings are discussed in light of the Buddhist notion of "unwholesome thoughts" and the distinction between thought suppression and the use of breathing as a benign distraction. We propose that mindfulness encompasses both a receptive, nonjudgmental awareness and an active, intentional redirection of attention. Conclusion: Mindfulness training aided participants by enhancing their capacity to disengage from fear-engaging thoughts, thereby maintaining them within their window of tolerance and facilitating cognitive processing.
Mental health and academic performance of college students: Knowledge in the field of mental health, self-control, and learning in college

Abstract:The aim of this research is to analyze the impact of mental health on the academic performance of junior and senior students studying in a university setting during the 2022-2023 academic year, in the post-COVID period. The study was conducted in Beijing, China, with the participation of 600 students, including 300 first-year students and 300 fifth-year students. DASS (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale) and PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) questionnaires were employed to measure mental health. The DASS assesses symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, while the PHQ-9 specifically evaluates depression severity. Academic performance was evaluated using a 12-point scale, which incorporated various criteria such as exam scores, coursework performance, and participation in extracurricular activities. The research was conducted across five faculties of the university from 2022 to 2023. In the study, fifth-year students demonstrated a higher level of mental health compared to first-year students, with an average DASS score of 27.1 and 24.2, respectively. Interestingly, despite this, first-year students achieved higher academic performance indicators, with an average score of 8.2 compared to 9.8 in fifth-year students. Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between stress, depression, and anxiety levels with academic performance (stress: r = -0.25, p < 0.001; depression: r = -0.20, p = 0.003; anxiety: r = -0.18, p = 0.008). These findings highlight the critical importance of addressing students' mental well-being, particularly in later academic years. Recommendations include implementing support programs and developing online resources for students.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: College students face a significant number of stressors, increasing risk for internalizing and externalizing psychopathology. The current study examines two promising avenues of intervention aimed to reduce stress and prevent psychopathology in this population: a coping skills group and a cognitive training program.PARTICIPANTS: 62 undergraduate students from two universities were recruited from 2013 to 2015.METHODS: Students were randomized to a 6-week coping skills group or cognitive training program and completed measures of stress, coping, executive function, and symptoms of anxiety, depression and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at pre- and post-intervention.RESULTS: Participants in both conditions reported significant decreases in social stress, executive function difficulties, and anxiety symptoms post-intervention. Students in the cognitive program improved significantly more on measures of behavior regulation and ADHD symptoms compared to the coping group at post-intervention.CONCLUSIONS: Brief stress management interventions targeting coping and executive function may benefit college students at risk for psychopathology.

The detrimental effects of sleep deprivation and lack of sleep on attention, memory, and neuroplasticity have been the subject of several research. The complicated interplay between sleep and neuroplasticity is examined in this research from both a macro and micro level, with a focus on attention and memory. The study also emphasizes how important environmental factors like exercise and food are in affecting sleep patterns and neuroplasticity. These discoveries not only give sleep and neurological research a fresh angle and biological foundation, but they also offer up new options for therapeutic care. Additionally, they offer a theoretical framework based on neurobiology as well as helpful advice for creating public policy.
