Abstract:We show that dynamical systems with phi-mixing measures have local escape rates which are exponential with rate 1 at non-periodic points and equal to the extremal index at periodic points. We apply this result to equilibrium states on subshifts of finite type, Gibbs-Markov systems, expanding interval maps, Gibbs states on conformal repellers, and more generally to Young towers, and by extension to all systems that can be modeled by a Young tower.

Abstract:Let , where is a connected Lie group and is a lattice in . Let be an open subset of , and let be a one-parameter subsemigroup of . Consider the set of points in whose -orbit misses ; it has measure zero if the flow is ergodic. It has been conjectured that, assuming ergodicity, this set has Hausdorff dimension strictly smaller than the dimension of . This conjecture has been proved when is compact or when is a simple Lie group of real rank , or, most recently, for certain flows on the space of lattices. In this paper we prove this conjecture for arbitrary -diagonalizable flows on irreducible quotients of semisimple Lie groups. The proof uses exponential mixing of the flow together with the method of integral inequalities for height functions on . We also derive an application to jointly Dirichlet-Improvable systems of linear forms.

Abstract:We prove that for a sequence of nested sets $\{U_n\}$ with $\Lambda = \cap_n U_n$ a measure zero set, the localized escape rate converges to the extremal index of $\Lambda$, provided that the dynamical system is $\phi$-mixing at polynomial speed. We also establish the general equivalence between the local escape rate for entry times and the local escape rate for returns.

Abstract:We study the Escape Problem for discrete-time linear dynamical systems over compact semialgebraic sets. We establish a uniform upper bound on the number of iterations it takes for every orbit of a rational matrix to escape a compact semialgebraic set defined over rational data. Our bound is doubly exponential in the ambient dimension, singly exponential in the degrees of the polynomials used to define the semialgebraic set, and singly exponential in the bitsize of the coefficients of these polynomials and the bitsize of the matrix entries. We show that our bound is tight by providing a matching lower bound.

Abstract:Abstract Let G be a Lie group, let $\Gamma \subset G$ be a discrete subgroup, let $X=G/\Gamma $ and let f be an affine map from X to itself. We give conditions on a submanifold Z of X that guarantee that the set of points $x\in X$ with f -trajectories avoiding Z is hyperplane absolute winning (a property which implies full Hausdorff dimension and is stable under countable intersections). A similar result is proved for one-parameter actions on X . This has applications in constructing exceptional geodesics on locally symmetric spaces and in non-density of the set of values of certain functions at integer points.

Abstract:Bergweiler and Kotus gave sharp upper bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the escaping set of a meromorphic function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class, in terms of the order of the function and the maximal multiplicity of the poles. We show that these bounds are also sharp in the Speiser class. We apply this method also to construct meromorphic functions in the Speiser class with preassigned dimensions of the Julia set and the escaping set.

Abstract:Let $H < G$ both be noncompact connected semisimple real algebraic groups where the former is maximal proper and $\Gamma < G$ be a lattice. Building on the work of Gorodnik-Weiss, we refine their techniques and obtain effective results. More precisely, we prove effective convergence of the distribution of dense $\Gamma$-orbits in $G/H$ to some limiting density on $G/H$ assuming effective equidistribution of regions of maximal horospherical orbits under one-parameter diagonal flows inside a dense $H$-orbit in $\Gamma \backslash G$. The significance of the effectivized argument is due to the recent effective equidistribution results of Lindenstrauss-Mohammadi-Wang for $\Delta(\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)) < \operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R) \times \operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$ and $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R) < \operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb C)$ and arithmetic lattices $\Gamma$, and future generalizations in that direction.

Abstract:In this article we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of geodesic directions that are recurrent and diverge on average coincides with the entropy at infinity of the geodesic flow for any complete, pinched negatively curved Riemannian manifold. We derive an interesting consequence from this result, we prove that the entropy of a {\sigma}-finite, ergodic and conservative infinite invariant measure is bounded from above by the entropy at infinity of the geodesic flow.

Abstract:We prove the convergence of moments of the number of directions of affine lattice vectors that fall into a small disc, under natural Diophantine conditions on the shift. Furthermore, we show that the pair correlation function is Poissonian for any irrational shift in dimension 3 and higher, including well-approximable vectors. Convergence in distribution was already proved in the work of Strömbergsson and the second author [The distribution of free path lengths in the periodic Lorentz gas and related lattice point problems. Ann. of Math. (2)172 (2010), 1949–2033], and the principal step in the extension to convergence of moments is an escape of mass estimate for averages over embedded -horospheres in the space of affine lattices.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a real Lie group, $\Lambda<G$ a lattice and $H<G$ a connected semisimple subgroup without compact factors and with finite center. We define the notion of $H$-expanding measures $\mu$ on $H$ and, applying recent work of Eskin-Lindenstrauss, prove that $\mu$-stationary probability measures on $G/\Lambda$ are homogeneous. Transferring a construction by Benoist-Quint and drawing on ideas of Eskin-Mirzakhani-Mohammadi, we construct Lyapunov/Margulis functions to show that $H$-expanding random walks on $G/\Lambda$ satisfy a recurrence condition and that homogeneous subspaces are repelling. Combined with a countability result, this allows us to prove equidistribution of trajectories in $G/\Lambda$ for $H$-expanding random walks and to obtain orbit closure descriptions. Finally, elaborating on an idea of Simmons-Weiss, we deduce Birkhoff genericity of a class of measures with respect to some diagonal flows and extend their applications to Diophantine approximation on similarity fractals to a non-conformal and weighted setting.

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points with divergent trajectories on the product of certain homogeneous spaces. The flow is allowed to be weighted with respect to the factors in the product space. The result is derived from its counterpart in Diophantine approximation. In doing this, we introduce a notion of jointly singular matrix tuples, and extend the dimension formula for singular matrices to such matrix tuples.

Abstract:For $d\ge 3$ we first show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of $A$-divergent on average points in the $(d-1)$-dimensional closed horosphere in the space of $d$-dimensional Euclidean lattices, where $A$ is the group of positive diagonal matrices, is at most $\frac{d-1}{2}$. In particular, this upper bound is sharp for $d=3$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a subshift of finite type with Markov measure. By considering a union of cylinders as holes, we investigate the exponential growth rate of measure of points whose orbits do not escape into the hole over a fixed number of iterations. We present two formulations for this escape rate: one based on the spectral radius of the Hadamard product of a related adjacency matrix and the stochastic matrix with respect to which the Markov measure is defined, and the other utilizing a recurrence relation. These formulations enable a comparative analysis of escape rates into distinct holes.

Abstract:Abstract We study the relation between escape rates and pressure in general dynamical systems with holes, where pressure is defined to be the difference between entropy and the sum of positive Lyapunov exponents. Central to the discussion is the formulation of a class of invariant measures supported on the survivor set over which we take the supremum to measure the pressure. Upper bounds for escape rates are proved for general diffeomorphisms of manifolds, possibly with singularities, for arbitrary holes and natural initial distributions, including Lebesgue and Sinai–Reulle–Bowen (SRB) measures. Lower bounds do not hold in such a generality, but for systems admitting Markov tower extensions with spectral gaps, we prove the equality of the escape rate with the absolute value of the pressure and the existence of an invariant measure realizing the escape rate, i.e. we prove a full variational principle. As an application of our results, we prove a variational principle for the billiard map associated with a planar Lorentz gas of finite horizon with holes.

Abstract:This paper investigates the (semi)group action of $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ on $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, a primary example of non-conformal, non-linear, and non-strictly contracting action. We study the Hausdorff dimension of a dynamically defined limit set in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ and generalize the classical Patterson-Sullivan formula using the approach of stationary measures. The two main examples are Anosov representations in $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ and the Rauzy gasket. 1. For Anosov representations in $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$, we establish a sharp lower bound for the dimension of their limit sets in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. Coupled with the upper bound in Pozzetti-Sambarino-Wienhard, it shows that their Hausdorff dimensions equal the affinity exponents. The merit of our approach is that it works uniformly for all the components of irreducible Anosov representations in $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$. As an application, it reveals a surprising dimension jump phenomenon in the Barbot component, which is a local generalization of Bowen's dimension rigidity result. 2. For the Rauzy gasket, we confirm a folklore conjecture about the Hausdorff dimension of the gasket and improve the numerical lower bound to $3/2$. These results originate from a dimension formula of stationary measures on $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. Let $\nu$ be a probability measure on $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ whose support is finite and spans a Zariski dense subgroup. Let $\mu$ be the associated stationary measure for the action on $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. Under the exponential separation condition on $\nu$, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of $\mu$ equals its Lyapunov dimension, which extends Hochman-Solomyak and Bárány-Hochman-Rapaport to non-conformal and projective settings respectively.
