Abstract:The debate about the orientation of 7-character regulated poems in the theory of poetry during the late Ming Dynasty reflected the different views held by the poets in the heyday of the Tang Dynasty about the orthodox and variation in the development of 7-character regulated poems.The 7-characted regulated poetry in the heyday of the Tang Dynasty was considered as orthodox,for it was gentle,graceful and magnificent.The formation of this artistic style was related to the cognateness of 7-character regulated poetry with 5-character yuefu(乐府) and 7-character gexing(歌行).Its formation also had something to do with the historical influence of its use in the poems written by high-rank officials to answer the call of the emperor.But the 7-character regulated poems written by Du Fu were universally acknowledged as "a change of artistic style" by the poets in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Its deeper reason was due to Du Fu's self-consciousness in exploring the rule of the form of 7-character regulated poetry and releasing its potential of expression.He made constant innovations on the basis of inheriting the traditional mode of expression of the 7-character regulated poetry in the early period and the heyday of the Tang Dynasty,breaking through the singleness of its theme,structure and way of expressing meaning and feeling.What is more,in his later period of creation Du Fu made use of the feature of 7-character regulated poems in which a single sentence could form a line,making the interconnection between sentences more independent and discontinuous,and also making the turning of the sentence veins more free.At the same time,he went into depth to express his psychological perception in the extraction and integration of images and in their match with the tones.The significance of these explorations consisted in his upholding the adaptability of the form of 7-character regulated poems to various themes from many perspectives.He greatly expanded the functions of 7-character regulated poems to express feelings and argue about things,and further differentiated 7-character regulated poetry from 7-character ancient-style poetry in their forms,tones and expressions.As a result,7-character regulated poetry became the mostly used poem genre after the Middle-Tang Dynasty,with its huge capacity to "incorporate the rules of all forms and the meanings of all themes".
