Abstract:A representative sample of undergraduate and postgraduate international students at a large Australian university (n=979, 64% females) completed a mail-back survey of their health and wellbeing. Most students evaluated their current and previous physical and mental health positively. Health-related risk practices such as unprotected sexual activity, drug use, smoking and gambling, were reported by few students. There was little change in health or risk behaviours since coming to Australia and few changes that were health compromising. Few demographic or situational variables, including age and gender, had a significant impact on students' wellbeing. This study has revealed that few international students find the experience of studying in an overseas country detrimental to their wellbeing. Nevertheless, for those students who encounter difficulties or are at increased risk of health-compromising outcomes, we must ensure better delivery of health promotion education, and access to, and use of, available counselling and health services.

Abstract:Background: There are growing concerns about the mental health of university students in Australia and internationally, with universities, governments and other stakeholders actively developing new policies and practices. Previous research suggests that many students experience poor mental health while at university, and that the risk may be heightened for international students. Mental health-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours are modifiable determinants of mental health and thus suitable targets for intervention. This study assessed the mental health-related knowledge, stigmatising attitudes, helping behaviours, and self-reported experiences of mental health problems in the student population of a large multi-campus Australian university, and conducted a comparative assessment of international and domestic students. Methods: Participants were 883 international and 2,852 domestic students (overall response rate 7.1%) who completed an anonymous voluntary online survey that was sent to all enrolled students in July 2019 (n = ~ 52,341). Various measures of mental health-related knowledge, attitudes and helping behaviours were assessed. A comparative analysis of international and domestic students was conducted, including adjustment for age and sex. Results: Overall, there was evidence of improvements in mental health-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours relative to previous studies, including higher depression recognition, intentions to seek help, and reported help-seeking behaviour. Comparative analysis indicated that international students scored predominantly lower on a range of indicators (e.g., depression recognition, awareness of evidence-based forms of help); however, differences were narrower difference between the two groups compared to what has been reported previously. Finally, some indicators were more favourable among international students, such as higher help-seeking intentions, and lower prevalence of self-reported mental health problems compared to domestic students. Conclusion: Though there were some important differences between domestic and international students in this study, differences were narrower than observed in previous studies. Study findings are informing the on-going implementation and refinement of this university's student mental health strategy, and may be used to inform evolving policy and practice in the university sector.
A systematic review and narrative synthesis of prevalence rates, risk and protective factors for suicidal behavior in international students

Abstract:International students are a crucial group for suicide prevention efforts. However, no comprehensive review of the prevalence, risk or protective factors for international student suicide has been conducted, complicating prevention efforts. The current systematic review addresses this issue by identifying the prevalence, risk, and protective factors for suicidal thoughts and behavior in international students enrolled in tertiary institutions. We searched CINAHL, EMBASE, ERIC, Medline, and PsycInfo from inception to November 2023, and 24 papers met the study inclusion criteria. Nineteen studies reported on the prevalence or intensity of suicidal ideation, six reported on the prevalence of suicide attempts, and seven on the prevalence of self-harm. No studies provided data on completed suicides. Studies indicated that international students experienced similar or lower levels of suicidal ideation and self-harm, but more frequent suicide attempts than domestic students. A narrative synthesis of risk and protective factors yielded mixed results, although social isolation, comorbid mental health conditions, and experiences of racism or discrimination were commonly linked to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The mixed evidence quality, numerous measurement issues, and low number of studies in the literature point to a need for further research on suicide among international students. Abstract:Background: Worsening mental health of students in higher education is a public policy concern and the impact of measures to reduce transmission of COVID-19 has heightened awareness of this issue. Preventing poor mental health and supporting positive mental wellbeing needs to be based on an evidence informed understanding what factors influence the mental health of students. Objectives: To identify factors associated with mental health of students in higher education. Methods: We undertook a systematic review of observational studies that measured factors associated with student mental wellbeing and poor mental health. Extensive searches were undertaken across five databases. We included studies undertaken in the UK and published within the last decade (2010-2020). Due to heterogeneity of factors, and diversity of outcomes used to measure wellbeing and poor mental health the findings were analysed and described narratively. Findings: We included 31 studies, most of which were cross sectional in design. Those factors most strongly and consistently associated with increased risk of developing poor mental health included students with experiences of trauma in childhood, those that identify as LGBTQ and students with autism. Factors that promote wellbeing include developing strong and supportive social networks. Students who are prepared and able to adjust to the changes that moving into higher education presents also experience better mental health. Some behaviours that are associated with poor mental health include lack of engagement both with learning and leisure activities and poor mental health literacy. Conclusion: Improved knowledge of factors associated with poor mental health and also those that increase mental wellbeing can provide a foundation for designing strategies and specific interventions that can prevent poor mental health and ensuring targeted support is available for students at increased risk.

Abstract:Collectively, universities and other tertiary education providers globally, attract significant numbers of international students each year. However, the extent and significance of the benefits derived by the host society from this international mobility is often misunderstood, or at best, underestimated. International students commonly provide multiple benefits to the financial and cultural health of the host institution and country but the economic benefit (for the host) is typically the primary consideration. A potential challenge or circuit-breaker for host institutions is the failure to acknowledge the particular differences between the needs of international students and their domestic counterparts. For some international students, the adjustment to studying offshore and experiencing an array of academic and personal development possibilities not otherwise available to them in their home country, may be overwhelming and contribute to unforeseen and unfortunate consequences for their mental health. All students in new settings, irrespective of background, require strong guidance, advice and support. However, the challenges of acculturation and adjustment to the stressors of academic study and everyday life in another country is accentuated for many international students rendering them a vulnerable student population. Irrespective of the number of international students in an educational setting, and given the steady growth in the number of students seeking educational opportunities overseas, there is an urgent need to ensure that adequate resources are provided for the support of all international students across all aspects of academic life. The importance of maximising the benefits and minimising the risks associated with international study for overseas students cannot be overstated. A quality experience for all, underpinned by an evidence-based and resourced safety net of support with specific training for mental health professionals, should be considered a global industry standard.

Supporting mental health and wellbeing of university and college students: A systematic review of review-level evidence of interventions

Abstract:Aims The review of reviews had three aims: (i) to synthesize the available evidence on interventions to improve college and university students’ mental health and wellbeing; (ii) to identify the effectiveness of interventions, and (iii) to highlight gaps in the evidence base for future study. Methods Electronic database searches were conducted to identify reviews in English from high-income OECD countries published between 1999 and 2020. All review-level empirical studies involving post-secondary students attending colleges of further education or universities that examined interventions to improve general mental health and wellbeing were included. Articles were critically appraised using an amended version of the AMSTAR 2 tool. Evidence from the included reviews were narratively synthesized and organised by intervention types. Results Twenty-seven reviews met the review of reviews inclusion criteria. The quality of the included reviews varied considerably. Intervention types identified included: mindfulness-based interventions, psychological interventions, psychoeducation interventions, recreation programmes, relaxation interventions, setting-based interventions, and stress management/reduction interventions. There was evidence that mindfulness-based interventions, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and interventions delivered via technology were effective when compared to a passive control. Some evidence suggested that the effects of CBT-related interventions are sustained over time. Psychoeducation interventions do not appear to be as effective as other forms of intervention, with its effects not enduring over time. Conclusions The review of reviews located a sizeable body of evidence on specific interventions such as mindfulness and cognitive-behavioural interventions. The evidence suggests that these interventions can effectively reduce common mental health difficulties in the higher education student body. Gaps and limitations in the reviews and the underlying body of evidence have been identified. These include a notable gap in the existing body of review-level evidence on setting-based interventions, acceptance and commitment training, and interventions for students attending colleges in UK settings.

Abstract:International students contribute significantly to both the economy and the intellectual and cultural landscape of host countries. Their interactions with domestic students foster personal, socioeconomic, and political development, promopting a broader understanding of diverse cultures and values. This highlights how crucial international education is for staying competitive globally. However, international students often face challenges such as poor mental health, linguistic and cultural barriers, acculturative stress, and limited health literacy. Therefore, supporting their academic success and well-being on college campuses is essential. This protocol aims to describe strategies used to evaluate the effect of interventions on international students' mental health and wellbeing and propose directions for future research based on the evidence. We will conduct an extensive search in several databases including CINAHL, PubMed, Web of Science, PsyInFO, ERIC, and Google Scholar with no date limits. Two reviewers will independently screen the literature and extract data. We will then conduct meta-analyses of the extracted data. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first systematic review with meta-analysis focusing on interventions to enhance mental health and wellbeing among international college students. This study will provide most updated empirical evidence on the effects of interventions aimed to improve international students' mental health and wellbeing. The findings from this study will summarize the importance of a range of interventions being available to international students who experience psychological distress and the effectiveness of each intervention. This study will also highlight the gap for researchers to focus on for future studies. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42024528767.

Abstract:Background: The international education sector is important not only to Australian society, but also to the national economy. There are growing concerns about the potential wellbeing challenges facing international students in their host country, owing to acculturative stress; including loneliness, isolation and experiences of racism. Risks include poor mental health and decreased likelihood to access support due to stigma, language and cultural barriers, not knowing where to seek help, and poor mental health knowledge. Methods: This study explored students' perceptions of their accommodation, subjective wellbeing (through the Personal Wellbeing Index, ['PWI']), mental health help-seeking and individual engagement with evidence-based everyday health promotion actions (informed by the '5 Ways to Wellbeing' model) through an online survey (N = 375) and three online focus groups (N = 19). A mixed-methods approach using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, regression analysis and thematic analysis, were used. Results: The PWI of international students in the survey was observed to be substantially lower (M = 60.7) than that reported for the Australian population (M = 77.5). Accommodation impacted on wellbeing (loneliness, belonging, connectedness) in a number of different ways including through location, safety, and shared accommodation. In terms of help-seeking, international students noted a number of barriers to accessing support for mental health: cost of accessing support, language and cultural barriers, lack of information on where to find support and stigma. Conclusions: In the discussion, implications of the findings are considered, including that more could be done to shape policy and practice in service and facility provision around wellbeing, connectedness, and help-seeking for mental health support of international students.

Abstract:Abstract Australia is a much sought-after destination of study for many thousands of international university students. However, tertiary study brings with it many challenges that may potentially precipitate psychological distress in international students. Psychological distress may be experienced in various ways. The aim of this study was to investigate the manner in which psychological distress is manifested in international students and the factors that contribute to their psychological distress. The participants consisted of 86 international students enrolled at a Queensland university who completed a battery of 9 self-report questionnaires. Results showed that obsessive–compulsiveness reflected by worry, ruminations and perfectionist tendencies was the most common symptom of psychological distress in international students. Dysfunctional coping was the only factor contributing to psychological distress. These findings have important implications for the international students with reference to the assessment of their mental health issues and the designing of suitable intervention programs.

Abstract:Background: Chinese international students are the largest group of international students in the UK. Although there is considerable research into acculturation and acculturation stress of these students, little is known about their mental health experiences. Methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted looking at literature published between 2009 –2019 in order to learn more about the mental health experience of Chinese international students in the UK. Results : It is difficult to confirm whether Chinese international students in the UK experience heightened risk of psychological distress, as argued by studies on other countries. However, these students do seem less likely to seek formal mental health support compared to home students, but rather rely more on informal support from friends. While Western mental health models are likely to be favoured by these students, certain cultural beliefs around prevention and cause of mental ill health might be present. Conclusion : Chinese international students in the UK are diverse and we still do not understand enough about their mental health experiences, which is a concern given the continued growth of their numbers. Caution is necessary when interpreting how some cultural factors are reported. China has undergone vast changes in recent years so drawing on studies that date back too far might not accurately capture Chinese youth today. The literature acknowledges that there will be new aspects to the experiences of mental health of these students, including new societal pressures relating to studying abroad. This paper also discusses gaps in our knowledge and practical steps that can be taken to support Chinese international students’ psychological wellbeing while studying in the UK.
International students' perspectives on factors impacting psychological well-being and early help-seeking behaviours in undergraduate nursing programs

Abstract:Background: Studying in a foreign country can be accompanied by challenges, including difficulty understanding the curriculum, culture shock, and a new language. These additional challenges place international students at risk and predispose them to developing mental health problems compared to domestic student. Aims: This study explores psychological well-being and help-seeking behaviours of international nursing students who commenced their program onshore or in a remote learning capacity. Materials & methods: This paper reports the findings of the mixed-methods study. Research was conducted among international students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing programs across multiple campuses at two Victorian universities in 2022. Data was collected using a survey questionnaire with open-response questions and incorporated a validated Student Stress Survey. Results: Findings indicated that international students require support financially and to settle in Australia upon arrival. Participants highlighted that they require additional support to keep up with academic workloads and require further academic support tailored for international students. There was no patient or public contribution in the design, conduct, analysis or preparation of this manuscript. Mental Health Status and Help-Seeking Strategies of Canadian International Students

Abstract:International students are at heightened risk of developing psychological distress, yet little research has been conducted on their mental health or support needs. This quantitative study focused on undergraduate students at two mid-sized universities in Manitoba, Canada. Online and paper surveys were completed by 932 participants, of whom 21% identified as international students. This paper, descriptive in nature, outlines the sociodemographic profiles, current mental health status, psychological characteristics, and coping strategies of international students compared to domestic students in each institution. Data show that international students are more likely to report excellent mental health, score higher on the mental health scale, and report higher life satisfaction, higher self-esteem, and more positive body image than domestic respondents. However, they are less likely to talk about their hardships. Providing culturally-adapted supports that take into consideration ethnolinguistic differences, religious practice, and mental health literacy will better meet the needs of international students on campus.

Abstract:International students comprise an increasingly larger proportion of higher education students globally. Empirical evidence about the health and well-being of these students is, however, limited. We sought to examine the health and well-being of international students, primarily from Asian countries, attending the University of Tasmania, Australia, using domestic students as a comparison group. Ethics approval was given to invite (via email) all currently enrolled students to participate in the study by completing a pilot-tested, online survey. The survey was completed by 382 international students (response rate = 8.9%) and 1013 domestic students (9.2%). Independent samples t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi-square tests were used for bivariate comparisons between international and domestic students, and between subgroups of international students. Regression models were used to examine the associations between student status (international vs. domestic) and health outcomes, controlling for demographic and enrolment variables. International students, particularly male students, were found to be at increased risk of several adverse health outcomes while also being less likely to seek help for mental health and related problems. The findings indicate the need for accessible, targeted, culturally-sensitive health promotion and early intervention programs.

Abstract:Australian &New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, Ahead of Print. Introduction:COVID-19 and related travel and social restrictions caused significant stress for university students in Australia and globally. Learning quickly moved online and many students (particularly international students) were separated from social and economic support. This study examined the impact of the pandemic from pre-pandemic (2019) to the COVID-19 Omicron wave (2022) on domestic and international students' mental health.Methods:Participants were 1540 students (72% females, 28% international) in four first-year cohorts (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022). We screened for mental health concerns (% positive) and symptom scores for depression, anxiety and somatic distress using the PsyCheck, and general wellbeing using the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-being scale.Results:From pre-COVID (2019) to the first wave of COVID-19 (2020), the proportion of students screening positive for mental health problems rose in both domestic students (66–76%) and international students (46–67%). Depression symptoms and wellbeing were worse in 2020 than in 2019, 2021 and 2022. Anxiety symptoms increased from 2019 to 2020 and continued to rise in 2021 and 2022. Somatic symptoms did not show an effect of cohort. Contrary to expectations, domestic students reported higher distress and lower wellbeing than international students across cohorts.Conclusion:The pandemic was associated with a marked increase in psychological distress in first-year university students, not all of which settled with the easing of restrictions. Post-pandemic recovery in the Australian university sector must include university-wide access to mental health information and support for incoming students.

Abstract:International students in China are facing difficulties while adapting their Chinese culture, and their life is influenced by the widespread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), and caring for their mental health is currently challenging. As a result, our aim is to explore the current mental health care of this minority in China and to provide useful suggestions for future research and institutes. We used the systematic review method, and it was conducted on 11 existing pieces of literature. Our results confirm the unsatisfying psychological situation of international students and the lack of research in this area. We focus on the causes and symptoms of mental problems and explore the effectiveness of methods.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic Chinese international students were reported to experience racism, food security issues and social isolation. However, no study has investigated the prevalence of these issues and the potential for worsening mental health in this population group during the pandemic. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of this pandemic on the mental health of Chinese international students living in Australia and China, and the protective effect of social support.METHODS: Data were extracted from a survey of Australian university students (April-June 2019) and follow-up during the pandemic (Sept-Oct 2020). The prevalence of anxiety, major depression and pandemic-related stressors was reported. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between country of residence, social support (baseline/follow-up), and follow-up self-reported mental health.RESULTS: With the pandemic, there was a substantial increase in the prevalence of anxiety (24.7 % vs 45.7 %) and major depression (22.1 % vs 43.8 %). Major depression was less likely to be reported by international students in China (34.8 %) than in Australia (46.3 %). Students with high social support during the pandemic were less likely to report major depression (Adjusted OR:0.15 [95 % CI 0.06,0.34]), although this effect was not observed longitudinally (Adjusted OR:1.03 [95 % CI 0.58,1.83]).LIMITATION: Post pandemic improvement in mental health cannot be assessed.CONCLUSION: The pandemic appeared to have had a strong negative effect on Chinese international university students' mental health. Those living in Australia were more likely to experience poorer mental health, highlighting the need for increased support to this group.

Abstract:Issue Addressed International students are at a heightened risk of experiencing negative health and wellbeing outcomes, which was further exacerbated during the COVID‐19 lockdowns. This research sought to explore the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on the health and wellbeing of international students in Australia. Methods Thirty‐one international students participated in qualitative in‐depth interviews between March and April 2022 to explore their experiences of health and wellbeing during 2020–2021 while they lived and studied in Australia. Interviews were coded and analysed thematically using NVivo software. Results Findings highlight the impact of the pandemic on international students' mental, social and financial wellbeing, including worry about loved ones, social isolation, financial and employment insecurity and challenges related to online learning. The pandemic exacerbated and brought more attention to existing issues and placed students in unequal positions in relation to domestic students and each other. Conclusions The COVID‐19 pandemic has increased students' vulnerability to poor mental health and to a range of social and financial issues. So What? The findings of this study highlight the need for support strategies to improve international students' mental health and social wellbeing outcomes in Australia.

Abstract:Introduction In Africa, the prevalence of mental health problems is higher among university students than in the general population. A number of systematic reviews and recent prevalence studies have focused on prevalence of mental health issues among college. This mixed-methods systematic review, including meta-analysis and meta-synthesis, will explore: what mental health services are available to university students; the extent to which students access available services and factors associated with service access; and the degree to which students activate (use) accessible services and factors associated with service activation. Methods and analysis We will conduct electronic literature search of the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Semantic Scholar, ERIC, Trip Database, Medline and PsycINFO. Disagreement, if any, will be resolved by a third reviewer. Two reviewers will independently assess the methodological quality of included studies using relevant tools. For cross-sectional studies, we will use the Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist for Analytical Cross Sectional Studies whereas qualitative or mixed-methods studies will be assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. OR, risk ratio or mean difference with 95% CI will be considered as the effect size. We will assess heterogeneity between studies by appropriate subgroup analyses. Publication bias will be detected using funnel plots. Ethics and dissemination Ethical clearance is not required as we are not collecting primary data. Findings will be disseminated via relevant scientific conferences and peer-reviewed publications. PROSPERO registration number CRD42022296870.
