Abstract:Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from rice fields have huge effects on climate change. To achieve a better climate, GHG emission datasets pointing toward environmentally friendly management techniques are required. The typically used processes for estimating GHG emissions from fields require expensive laboratory instruments and are tedious in nature which presents the need for low-cost solutions. This study proposes a human machine interface assisted portable device for measuring and recording GHG emissions in real time along with weather and soil parameters from agricultural fields. The automated system is based on low-cost sensors and ESP32 microcontroller programmed through open-source software. To study its performance, it was deployed in rice fields under different sowing conditions: transplanting and direct seeding during Kharif 2022 and 2023. The cumulative change (%) in CO 2 and CH 4 emissions in DSR field w.r.t. TPR field was measured. The preliminary results indicate that rice fields under transplanting conditions emit more methane (approx. 32.59% higher) than in direct seeding with maximum emissions after the application of fertilizer in the field. GHG emissions are dependent on the application of fertilizer, irrigation scheduling, weather conditions, soil parameters, etc., which need to be quantified through extensive trials. On the whole, the low-cost sensor-based system had the potential to point toward climate-smart techniques for agricultural users.
