Abstract:A dam breaking is a major flood catastrophe. The shape, depth, and wave Doppler effect of initial water flow are all modified as a result of the interaction of the water body with downstream structures after a dam breach, forming a diffraction and reflection flow field. This study investigates the dam breaking problem of a single liquid, by creating a two-dimensional simplified numerical model using the VOF approach, analysing the interaction and effect between barriers of various forms and the dam failure flow, and explains the problem of a complex flow mechanism involving significant deformation of the free surface of a medium. According to the findings, obstacles of varying forms could obstruct the dam break’s water flow to various degrees, and the viscous dissipation characteristic of the water body at the edge of the obstacle is closely related to the slope of the site. The numerical simulation presented in this study is validated, demonstrating its accuracy for both the gate-pulling and downstream wet-bed scenarios.

Abstract:The prediction and evaluation of the change characteristics of non-homogeneous debris flow are an important content of debris flow control project planning and early warning and forecasting system construction. They are also a key issue that needs to be improved in the field of debris flow. By sorting out and analyzing the measured data of the mud level and velocity of the debris flow, a prediction model of the characteristic value of the non-homogeneous debris flow movement is constructed. Based on the previous results, the model can distinguish the change characteristics of the debris flow movement in the study area with fewer factors. Taking the mud-rock flow in Xiahuyang Gully, Lixian County, Longnan area as an example, the FLO-2D fluid model is used to simulate the movement characteristics of debris flow under precipitation conditions of once in 50 years(2% frequency) and once in 20 years(5% frequency). The results show that when the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.83t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully in 20 years is the smallest and the difference is not significant. When the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.97t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully is once in 50 years the biggest and the difference is huge. When the flow of debris flows of different scales reaches the peak, they all produce larger mud level depth. The simulation results of the debris flow movement characteristic value are further combined with the actual measured cross-sections for inspection and analysis. The peak flow rate of the debris flow event is inferred and is in good agreement with the actual situation, indicating that the results calculated by the prediction model of this paper are reliable. The results in this paper can provide a reference for the construction of debris flow disaster prevention and mitigation and debris flow monitoring and early warning demonstration areas.
Development of structural type-based physical vulnerability curves to debris flow using numerical analysis and regression model

Abstract:Urbanization has significantly increased the risk of debris flows to houses located at mountain boundaries, particularly in South Korea, where urban centers are surrounded by mountains. The degree of damage to a house strongly depends on the structural rigidity of the building, even when exposed to the same hazard intensities. However, the structural characteristics of buildings are usually disregarded in vulnerability assessments. In this study, vulnerability curves were proposed for three different structural types of buildings: brick masonry, light-weight steel frame, and wood structures, using numerical and regression analyses. A total of 22 debris flow events from 2011 to 2020 and 63 cases of damage to unreinforced structures were collected and analyzed. Back analysis of the debris flows was performed using Flow-R, and the impact pressure acting on each structure was calculated. Three different vulnerability curves were proposed using various linear and nonlinear regression analyses; the Avrami equation provided the highest statistical significance. The vulnerability curves of three different structures were similar for the slight damage range. However, over the slight damage range, the wood structure was the most vulnerable at a given hazard intensity, whereas the brick masonry structure was the least vulnerable. Validation was performed using data from recent debris flow events, revealing precise damage level predictions for 9 out of 11 buildings. Compared with previous research, the degree of damage at the same hazard intensity was found to be significantly dependent on the structural type. The developed vulnerability curve for each unreinforced structure can be used as key data for vulnerability and risk assessments.

The Study for Sediment Disaster at the Vulnerable Area Using Debris Flow Estimating Model

Abstract:Torrential rains occurring during the unpredictable climate change cause many mountain disasters in vulnerable areas. This study is to analyze the debris flow mechanism by applying the multiplier of the vulnerable area debris flow prediction model presented by USACE to the erosion or sedimentation model. The higher the typhoon category, the higher the debris flow peak value, and the frequency of peaks of flow discharge with long durations increased. Analysis of changes in vegetation density showed that the initial peak value of the debris flow reaching the bottom was highest due to dense vegetation, and high-amplitude fluctuations appeared due to energy dissipation. In the case of heavy rainfall, the peak value of debris flow increased by more than 22%, and fluctuations of flow discharge occurred earlier at the elapsed time. In addition, debris flow fluctuations with high wave heights appeared, and the high-amplitude band width also appeared to be quite long. The analysis of present study will provide information for developing and prevention disaster reduction measures in vulnerable areas.
Physical Vulnerability Models for Assessing Building Damage by Debris Flows

Abstract:A catastrophic debris flow occurred in Zhouqu County, Gansu Province, Northwestern China, at midnight on 7 August 2010, resulting in damage to > 390 buildings. Assessment of the vulnerability of buildings to debris flow hazards is essential to quantify the risk of debris flows. This paper presents a new family of physical vulnerability curves to assess the damage to buildings by debris flows based on extensive observed data of building damage and simulated debris flow intensity. A database of damaged buildings in the affected area of the Zhouqu debris flow was reconstructed. Numerical simulations using FLO-2D were conducted to determine the intensity of debris flows. A series of physical vulnerability empirical models for assessing the building damage has been proposed using various hazard intensity measures. Since buildings of different structural types have different resistances to debris flows, the vulnerability functions were developed for two typical types of structures, i.e. brick-concrete structures and reinforced concrete-frame structures. The proposed vulnerability functions are comparable with those for debris flows in Switzerland, Italy and Austria. The buildings may be completely destroyed when the debris flow depth is more than one half of the building height for both types of building structures
Predicting the Occurrence of Channelized Debris Flow by an Integrated Cascading Model: A Case Study of a Small Debris Flow-Prone Catchment in Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:Excessive water in a channel is an important factor that triggers channelized debris flows. Floods and debris flows often occur in a cascading manner, and thus, calculating the amount of runoff accurately is important for predicting the occurrence of debris flows. In order to explore the runoff-rainfall relationship, we placed two measuring facilities at the outlet of a small, debris flow-prone headwater catchment to explore the hydrological response of the catchment. The runoff responses generally consisted of a rapid increase in runoff followed by a slower decrease. The peak runoff often occurred after the rainfall ended. The runoff discharge data were simulated by two different modeling approaches, i.e., the NAM model and the Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) model. The results showed that the NAM model performed better than the HEC-HMS model. The NAM model provided acceptable simulations, while the HEC-HMS model did not. Then, we coupled the calculated results of the NAM model with an empirically based debris flow initiation model to obtain a new integrated cascading disaster modeling system to provide improved disaster preparedness and hazard management. In this case study, we found that the coupled model could correctly predict the occurrence of debris flows. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of the range of input parameter values on the hydrographical shape of the runoff. We also used the grey relational analysis to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the parameters of the model. This study highlighted the important connections between rainfall, hydrological processes, and debris flow, and it provides a useful prototype model system for operational forecasting of debris flows.

Abstract:Typhoons are recurring meteorological phenomena in the southeastern coastal area of China, frequently triggering debris flows and other forms of slope failures that result in significant economic damage and loss of life in densely populated and economically active regions. Accurate prediction of typhoon-triggered debris flows and identification of high-risk zones are imperative for effective risk management. Surprisingly, little attention has been devoted to the construction of physical vulnerability curves in typhoon-affected areas, as a basis for risk assessment. To address this deficiency, this paper presents a quantitative method for developing physical vulnerability curves for buildings by modeling debris flow intensity and building damage characteristics. In this study, we selected the Wangzhuangwu watershed, in Zhejiang Province of China, which was impacted by a debris flow induced by Typhoon Lekima on August 10, 2019. We conducted detailed field surveys after interpreting remote sensing imagery to analyze the geological features and the mechanism of the debris flow and constructed a comprehensive database of building damage characteristics. To model the 2019 debris flow initiation, entrainment, and deposition processes, we applied the Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number (SCS-CN) approach and a two-dimensional debris flow model (FLO-2D). The reconstructed debris flow depth and extent were validated using observed debris flow data. We generated physical vulnerability curves for different types of building structures, taking into account both the degree of building damage and the modeled debris flow intensity, including flow depth and impact pressure. Based on calibrated rheological parameters, we modeled the potential intensity of future debris flows while considering various recurrence frequencies of triggering rainfall events. Subsequently, we calculated the vulnerability index and economic risk associated with buildings for different frequencies of debris flow events, employing diverse vulnerability functions that factored in uncertainty in both intensity indicators and building structures. We observed that the vulnerability function utilizing impact pressure as the intensity indicator tends to be more conservative than the one employing flow depth as a parameter. This comprehensive approach efficiently generated physical vulnerability curves and a debris flow risk map, providing valuable insights for effective disaster prevention in areas prone to debris flows.

Hybrid Simulation of the Initiation and Runout Characteristics of A Catastrophic Debris Flow

Abstract:On 13 August 2010, a catastrophic debris flow with a volume of 1.17 million m3 occurred in Xiaojiagou Ravine near Yingxiu town of Wenchuan county in Sichuan Province, China. The main source material was the landslide deposits retained in the ravine during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. This paper describes a two-dimensional hybrid numerical method that simulates the entire process of the debris flow from initiation to transportation and finally to deposition. The study area is discretized into a grid of square zones. A two dimensional finite difference method is then applied to simulate the rainfall-runoff and debris flow runout processes. The analysis is divided into three steps; namely, rainfall-runoff simulation, mixing water and solid materials, and debris flow runout simulation. The rainfall-runoff simulation is firstly conducted to obtain the cumulative runoff near the location of main source material and at the outlet of the first branch. The water and solid materials are then mixed to create an inflow hydrograph for the debris flow runout simulation. The occurrence time and volume of the debris flow can be estimated in this step. Finally the runout process of the debris flow is simulated. When the yield stress is high, it controls the deposition zone. When the yield stress is medium or low, both yield stress and viscosity influence the deposition zone. The flow velocity is largely influenced by the viscosity. The estimated yield stress by the equation, τ y = ρghsin θ, and the estimated viscosity by the equation established by Bisantino et al. (2010) provide good estimates of the area of the debris flow fan and the distribution of deposition depth.
Numerical Study for Water Waves Generated by Debris Flow

Abstract:Earthquake or rainfall can arouse landslide, which will cause debris flow. Free surface water waves generated by plunging of debris flow cause devastating damage on human life. In this study, a numerical scheme for debris flow and free surface water wave was developed based on shallow water approximation, in which the interaction between these two flows was included newly. Generation of waves by plunging of debris flow is highly non-linear phenomena. Original CIP method and first order up-wind scheme mixed with second order central derivative scheme were adopted to simulate collision of two initially separated fluids (debris flow and still water). Six cases have been adopted to simulate the generation, propagation and run-up of water waves generated by debris flow. The time series of these two flows for these six calculating cases show the interaction of these two flows. Numerical results for interaction of debris flow and generated water wave are quite satisfactory and reasonable.
Study on the downcutting rate of a debris flow dam based on grain-size distribution

Abstract:Though widespread in disaster-prone areas, debris flow dams have unique characteristics in their formation and failure. An accurate description of their failure is the prerequisite to predict the dam-break floods, although little has been done in this research area. This paper describes the longitudinal evolution processes of a debris flow dam with 15 different grain-size distributions through flume tests, and put forward the formula of the downcutting rate for the whole process of overtopping failure. Results have shown that, according to the longitudinal evolution characteristics of the debris flow dam failure, the breach process can be divided into three stages: the formation of a retrogressive scarp, the erosion of the retrogressive scarp, and its decline stage. When the dam overtops and breaches, the downcutting rate for the whole evolution process can be expressed as E = k v sin(0.85 + θ)3, where E is the erosion rate, v and θ are the flow velocity and the longitudinal slope of the breach respectively, and k is the erosion rate coefficient. The larger the value of the erosion rate coefficient k is, the faster the erosion rate E is. The minimum correlation coefficient R 2 between the calculated and the measured erosion rates is 0.73. In addition, the relationship among erosion rate coefficient k, grain-size distribution parameters μ, and D c is also proposed, and the correlation coefficient R 2 reaches 0.965. The results provide an important theoretical basis for the prediction of debris flow dam-break floods, which can facilitate evidence-based decision-making in disaster prevention and mitigation.

Numerical Investigation of Deposition Mechanism of Submarine Debris Flow

Abstract:Debris-flow susceptibility is controlled not only by static effective factors such as topography and lithology, but also by dynamic effective factors such as earthquake, rainfall and human activity. In this paper, a simple model of calculating the dynamic susceptibility is developed based on the assumption of linear relationship between the static and dynamic susceptibilities. The influence of earthquake and rainfall events is represent by two coefficients. The earthquake coefficient is considered as an exponential function of intensity, and a negative power function of elapsed time. The rainfall coefficient is proportional to the occurrence days of heavy rainfall. This model is applied to assess the debris-flow susceptibility of Hengduan mountainous area from 2000 to 2015. Four static effective factors including relative relief, slope, lithology and fault density are used to calculate the static susceptibility by ARCGIS grid toolbox. There are six earthquake events since 1995 whose intensity zones of >= VI are intersected with the Hengduan area. The earthquake coefficient is calculated with the intensity zoning data of each of the six events and then is accumulated to get the final earthquake coefficient in each year. TRMM satellite rainfall data from 2000 to 2015 are collected to extract the occurrence days of heavy rainfall which is used to calculate the rainfall coefficient. The dynamic susceptibilities from 2000 to 2015 are obtained by multiplying the static susceptibility with the earthquake and rainfall coefficients in respective year. Abstract:Climate change has increased the amount and intensity of rainfall, increasing debris flow risk. Debris flow damage has become a social issue in Korea, and the need for research related to rainfall thresholds for debris flow has increased. In this study, an automatic calculation algorithm was developed to derive criteria suitable for the Korean region for the rainfall thresholds of debris flow. The study area selected was Gangwon-do, where a significant amount of debris flow occurred recently, and information on rainfall and the occurrence of debris flow were collected. As a result of applying an algorithm based on the R programming language, an equation for the relationship between the rainfall intensity and duration in Gangwon-do was automatically derived using debris flow occurrence point information and meteorological rainfall information.
Modelling of debris-flow susceptibility and propagation: a case study from Northwest Himalaya

Abstract:The geological and geographical position of the Northwest Himalayas makes it a vulnerable area for mass movements particularly landslides and debris flows. Mass movements have had a substantial impact on the study area which is extending along Karakorum Highway (KKH) from Besham to Chilas. Intense seismicity, deep gorges, steep terrain and extreme climatic events trigger multiple mountain hazards along the KKH, among which debris flow is recognized as the most destructive geohazard. This study aims to prepare a field-based debris flow inventory map at a regional scale along a 200 km stretch from Besham to Chilas. A total of 117 debris flows were identified in the field, and subsequently, a point-based debris-flow inventory and catchment delineation were performed through ArcGIS analysis. Regional scale debris flow susceptibility and propagation maps were prepared using Weighted Overlay Method (WOM) and Flow-R technique sequentially. Predisposing factors include slope, slope aspect, elevation, Topographic Roughness Index (TRI), Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), stream buffer, distance to faults, lithology rainfall, curvature, and collapsed material layer. The dataset was randomly divided into training data (75%) and validation data (25%). Results were validated through the Receiver Operator Characteristics (ROC) curve. Results show that Area Under the Curve (AUC) using WOM model is 79.2%. Flow-R propagation of debris flow shows that the 13.15%, 22.94%, and 63.91% areas are very high, high, and low susceptible to debris flow respectively. The propagation predicated by Flow-R validates the naturally occurring debris flow propagation as observed in the field surveys. The output of this research will provide valuable input to the decision makers for the site selection, designing of the prevention system, and for the protection of current infrastructure.

Abstract:In this paper, a finite element model of a highway bridge pier subjected to debris flow is established, which comprises a double-column pier, a gully channel, moving fluid and solid particles. By using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) algorithm to calculate the fluid-solid coupling effect, the process of debris flow impacting on the pier is simulated. Based on the 'two-phase flow' theory, a simplified equation to calculate the impact force of debris flow containing both fluid and solid phases is proposed, and the variable parameters in the equation are determined through numerical simulation using the established FE model and the field-measured data. By comparing with the historical records of actual debris flows, the effectiveness of the numerical model and the proposed equation is verified. A reliability model of the pier subjected to debris flow is established, and the structural vulnerability is estimated by the MCS method. Using the site-observed data, the failure mode of a highway double-column pier subjected to impact of two-phase debris flow is studied. The critical velocities of debris flow causing the structure to have different modes of damage, and the critical impact height of debris flow on the pier suffering bending and shear failures are determined.

Abstract:Debris flow can cause damage only when its discharge exceeds the drainage capacity of the prevention engineering. At present, most rainfall thresholds for debris flows mainly focus on the initiation of debris flow and do not adequately consider the magnitude and drainage measures of debris flows. These thresholds are likely to initiate numerous warnings that may not be related to hazardous processes. This study proposes a method for calculating the rainfall threshold that is related to a defined level of debris flow magnitude, over which certain damage may be caused. This method is constructed by using the transient rainfall infiltration analysis slope stability model (TRIGRS) and the fluid dynamics process simulation model (MassFlow). We first use the TRIGRS model to analyze slope stability in the study area and obtain the distribution of unstable slopes under different rainfall conditions. Afterward, the MassFlow model is employed to simulate the movement process of unstable slope units and to predict the depositional processes at the mouth of the catchment. Lastly a rainfall threshold is constructed by statistically analyzing the rainfall conditions that cause debris flows flushing out of the given drainage ditch. This method is useful to predict debris flow events of a hazardous magnitude, especially for areas with limited historical observational data.

Abstract:A debris flow, with terraced fields as the source area, broke out on June 25th, 2018 in the Xiaotuga area of Yunnan Province, China, and this kind of debris flow is rarely recorded. Two purposes in this study: (1) the influence of flow drag force on slope stability; (2) back-analyze the movement process of debris flow. First, the geological background and movement of this debris flow were described based on a field investigation. Then, drag force, calculated by the laminar flow theory, is added to the slope stability calculation model, which elaborates the initiation process of this disaster. Moreover, dynamic simulation software (DAN3D) was used to simulate the kinematic process of the debris flow with a variety of combination models. The study shows that the terrace area can quickly produce surface runoff and create a drag force under rainfall conditions, which is the essential reason for the initiation of debris flow. In addition, the use of the FVV (Frictional-Voellmy-Voellmy) model is found to provide the best performance in simulating this type of debris flow, which reveals that it lasts approximately 200 s and that the maximum velocity is 12 m/s.

Abstract:The upper Yangtze River region is one of the most frequent debris flow areas in China. The study area contains a cascade of six large hydropower stations located along the river with total capacity of more than 70 million kilowatts. The purpose of the study was to determine potential and dynamic differences in debris flow susceptibility and intensity with regard to seasonal monsoon events. We analyzed this region’s debris flow history by examining the effective peak acceleration of antecedent earthquakes, the impacts of antecedent droughts, the combined effects of earthquakes and droughts, with regard to topography, precipitation, and loose solid material conditions. Based on these factors, we developed a debris flow susceptibility map. Results indicate that the entire debris flow susceptibility area is 167,500 km2, of which 26,800 km2 falls within the high susceptibility area, with 60,900 km2 in medium and 79,800 km2 are in low susceptibility areas. Three of the six large hydropower stations are located within the areas with high risk of debris flows. The synthetic zonation map of debris flow susceptibility for the study area corresponds with both the investigation data and actual distribution of debris flows. The results of debris flow susceptibility provide base-line data for mitigating, assessing, controlling and monitoring of debris flows hazards.

Abstract:On August 20, 2019, a catastrophic debris flow occurred in the Cutou catchment, leading to the formation of a dam in the Min River. This debris barrier triggered a chain of multiple hazards, resulting in widespread flooding of houses upstream and downstream. To understand and assess the impact of this hazard chain, we conducted a comprehensive study using numerical modeling, field survey, the solid material reserve, and the probabilistic method. We began by conducting a detailed investigation of the 2019 event and calibrated the model parameters using survey data. Subsequently, we simulated and analyzed the entire process of hazard chain event, which was divided into four stages by the characteristics of water level. Finally, we developed a comprehensive and efficient approach for hazard assessment using the solid material reserve method and the probabilistic method. This approach enabled us to generate a hazard distribution map for the debris flow chain, providing valuable insights for effective hazard prevention in the Wenchuan area.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the zoning and risk of debris flow gully based on numerical simulation, a set of theoretical system and technical process of debris flow quantitative risk analysis suitable for mountainous towns in southwest China was constructed, taking buildings and roads as the research objects, in view of the particularity of disaster-bearing body types and debris flow disaster modes. It is mainly divided into three steps: (1) Using FLO-2D numerical model, the risk of debris flow is expressed by intensity index IDF; The simulation results of debris flow in Gully A 7·11 show that the area of correctly judged area is 50.02×10 4 m 2 , the comprehensive accuracy index ω is 1.22, and the maximum IDF can reach 1013.25m 3 /s 2 , showing a general trend that the upstream is higher than the downstream, and the center of the drainage channel is higher than both sides. Using the data of debris flow damage in A ditch 7·11 in A city, a material vulnerability curve based on the probability of exceeding loss is constructed. Based on the establishment of disaster-bearing body database, the expected loss of disaster-bearing body can be expressed quantitatively by setting different future debris flow scenarios. The model verification and case application of A ditch in A city show that the quantitative risk analysis system of debris flow can well reflect the response mechanism of disaster-bearing body and debris flow, and can provide scientific basis for disaster prevention and mitigation in debris flow threat areas.

Abstract:At 14:00 on 18 June 2017, floods occurred in Shiyang gully at the junction of Beijing and Hebei Province, China. The floods put 12 people at risk, 6 of whom died. After the occurrence of the floods, the environment in Shiyang gully has undergone tremendous changes. There are many loose residual materials in the watershed. Therefore, it was necessary to evaluate the debris flow susceptibility of Shiyang gully after the disaster. The factor analysis method, entropy weighting method and geomorphic information entropy method were used to evaluate the debris flow susceptibility of each sub-watershed in Shiyang gully. By comparison with the technical standard published by the China Ministry of Lands and Resources, it was found that the susceptibility assessment results are not ideal. To improve the accuracy of the assessment results, we used a comprehensive method. The accuracy of the susceptibility assessment obtained by the comprehensive method is 87.5%. This accuracy shows that the comprehensive method is applicable to the susceptibility assessment of debris flows in this region. To predict the runout path of potential debris flows in four sub-watersheds with very high susceptibility, the authors used the SFLOW software developed by Jilin University to simulate the debris flow hazards. Combined with the on-site investigation data, debris flows in the four sub-watersheds were simulated at 10-, 20-, 50-, and 100-year recurrence intervals. The obtained runout path could provide some guidance and reference for the avoidance of disasters and treatment of debris flows.
