Abstract:Underwater Optical Wireless Communication is not a newly coined idea but it has recently created renewed interest to the scientific community. In comparison to acoustic and RF counter parts it has many advantages like higher bandwidth, higher data rates at low latency levels and lower power consumption. The conventional methods such as intensity modulation (IM) schemes with direct detection, On/Off Keying, Pulse Position Modulation, Pulse Width Modulation in UWOC systems has certain disadvantages such as high latency, high BER etc. and also it is not suitable for some kind of practical applications like in video signal processing and transmission applications. Most of the modulation schemes in underwater has lower range of communication efficiency. Communication in the ranges of km is required for underwater vehicle sensors and observatories. Therefore, for better communication range we can use PSK modulations in underwater. So, in this paper we propose an UWOC system by using Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) and Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation and Avalanche Photo Diode detection. The underwater medium is simulated with the proper adjustment of parameters in the optical wireless channel. The bit rate of optical link considered is at 10 Gbps for all the types of sea water. The efficiency is analysed in terms Q-Factor, Bit Error Rate (BER) and from the result it can be seen that both the QPSK and DPSK are suitable for underwater optical communications with a minimum BER of zero. However, in comparison DPSK has much better Q-Factor in underwater wireless optical links.
