Abstract:Printing technology evolves at a quick pace, and what was once only capable of printing two-dimensional objects is now capable of producing true three-dimensional objects. Three-dimensional printing, often known as 3D printing, allows you to create a work of art quickly, easily, and in great detail. 3D printers can create a wide range of objects, including statues, automobile components, toys, shoes, furniture, clothing, weaponry, human body parts, and more, and their printing capabilities will only improve in the future. This type of technology must be presented to students in a formal and creative manner in their creation activities in order to develop them to be creative thinkers who can use technology as a medium to fulfil their creativity. The technology of 3D printing can influence creativity, resulting in the realisation of ideas inside the design creation process without having to go through the lengthy design process. The purpose of this research paper is to see how creative products can be designed while using technology. The systematic literature review has been explored through internet and secondary data from relevant published academic literature from journals articles and research papers. The case study method is used to identify extensive information through an in-depth analysis of existing cases in Interior and product design.

Abstract:Abstract 3D metal printing and aerospace industry is an ideal combination where 3D metal printing offers unmatched advantages over the conventional method in terms of its rapid prototyping, rapid tooling, easy maintenance and repairs. With the provision and implementation of 3D metal printing onto aerospace sector, leading manufacturers are now enjoying great benefits as this exciting technology reduces the lead-time, increases production flexibility as well as cost-effective. However, we are now left with a big question: whether or not this 3D metal printing technology has arrived to its maximum capacity where the system operates with no flaw. Previous studies have shown that 3D metal printing is battling with its consistency, repeatability and traceability due to many independent variables that need to be controlled in a single run. Adoption of Artificial Intelligence onto the 3D metal printing has been viewed to be a promising step and therefore, serves as a cornerstone towards a better development of 3D metal printing technology.
Buildability analysis on squared profile structure in 3D concrete printing (3DCP)

Abstract:Numerical modelling and simulation approaches can be used to optimize material combinations, structural design, and process parameters to achieve the desired structural performance of 3D-printed structures. In this study, a novel construction and demolition waste-based mortar mixture was prepared for the 3D concrete printing (3DCP) process. A square cross-sectional structure was designed and 3D-printed using a lab-scale gantry-type 3D printer for buildability analysis. The geopolymer material was also characterized to obtain time-dependent properties for use in a numerical model capable of predicting the buildability (final height) of structures. In the numerical modelling and simulation phase, predictive simulations were performed for experimentally 3D-printed structures to validate the predictability of the numerical model. The numerical model revealed a sound approximation of buildability with an error of 6.3% only. Furthermore, using numerical simulations, sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the impact of designed height and 3DCP process parameters (i.e., printing speed and layer width) on the buildability of structures. The numerical modelling and simulation results revealed a strong impact of both process parameters (i.e., printing speed and layer width) on the buildability of 3D-printed structures. A maximum buildability of 410.6 mm was achieved for structure 3D-printed at a printing speed of 20 mm/s and layer width of 45 mm. Overall, an improved buildability was observed for lower printing speeds and higher layer widths; however, the buildability performance was more sensitive to the layer width.

Abstract:Driven by the rapid evolution of 3D printing technology, the construction industry is on the verge of a momentous revolutionary shift. The implementation of construction 3D printing (C3DP) or additive construction (AC) is rewriting the established conventions of traditional building methods. The efficiency and versatility demonstrated by C3DP have the potential not only to revolutionize construction techniques but also to address persistent industry challenges. This paper provides an updated and comprehensive review of AC, drawing on insights from industry reports and post-2016 academic research. Its primary aim is to bridge the gap between academia and industry, thereby offering researchers, professionals, and policymakers a complete review of the state-of-the-art of C3DP as well as the latest technological advancements. It delves into various aspects of 3DCP, including printing systems, materials, thermal performance, current limitations, and sustainability considerations, providing valuable insights and shaping a roadmap for future research endeavors.

Abstract:In recent years, significant advancements in developing large-scale 3D printers and construction materials have been made to meet industrial-scale 3D printing construction demand. Constructing the buildings and structural components using 3D concrete printing is significant. The main benefits of additive manufacturing (AM) are freedom of design, construction waste reduction, mass customization, and the ability to manufacture complex structures. The major issues include optimizing the printing material with suitable properties for 3D concrete printing. However, this technology for green building construction seems to improve conventional methods by reducing human resource requirements, high investment costs, and formworks. The research community's interest in 3D printing for architecture and construction has grown significantly over the last few years. As a result, there is a need to combine existing and ongoing research in this area to understand better current problems and their potential solutions based on future research work. This paper reviews the latest trend of research and state-of-the-art technologies in 3D printing in building and construction by analyzing the publications from 2002 to 2022. Based on the above-mentioned analysis of publications, printing methods, concrete printing systems, and the influence of constituent materials and chemical admixtures on concrete material properties are briefly discussed. The challenges and recommendations of 3DCP, including reinforcement, development of new materials, multi-nozzle combinations, life cycle assessment of 3DCP, and development of hybrid systems, are then examined. This paper concluded with a discussion of the limitations of existing systems and potential future initiatives to enhance their capability and print quality.

Abstract:This study reviews the essential aspects of implementing Additive Manufacturing in the construction sector by highlighting the key benefits and challenges. A comparative review allows identifying the leading technologies and prospects that have been utilized in this particular area. In recent years, research into the application of 3D printing in the building industry has increased significantly worldwide. Moreover, various systems and robotic arms have been investigated to enhance buildings’ productivity. Even though there are various manufacturing methods, this article reviewed current material extrusion technologies widely used in this field. The article critically evaluates the materials used in printed structures, polymer, and cementing. The problems of reducing carbon dioxide emissions through the introduction of geopolymers are also considered. The paper focuses on four areas or directions or dimensions. First, the central concept and classifications of AM and the crucial advantages of utilizing its technologies in the construction sector are discussed. Second, material extrusion techniques and their types, including cementitious and polymer materials and large-scale 3D printing technologies are examined. Third, the ways of reducing negative impacts on the building industry by implementing geopolymers and their current development are described. Fourth, the crucial challenges of using 3D printing approaches and their future direction should be focused on are put forward. Moreover, this article provides lists of companies that produce modern 3D printers from all over the world.
Buildability Analysis of 3D Concrete Printing Process: A Parametric Study Using Design of Experiment Approach

Abstract:Plastic collapse and buckling are the key structural failure criteria in 3D concrete printing (3DCP). This study aims to analyze the effect of different geometrical designs and printing factors on the buildability performance of 3DCP structures. Due to the high number of variables involved, the Design of Experiment (DOE) has been used to reduce the number of simulations. In geometrical design parameters, the structure's design is more sensitive, followed by the width and length of the printed design. The buildability increases when we move from sharp corners to more stable structures like fillets and circular geometry. For geometrical design parameters, a maximum buildability of 74% of the designed height is achieved for circular design with the highest width and lowest diameter. For printing parameters, the highest buildability of 486 mm (81%) is achieved for the lower values of printing speed and layer height. The study analyzed failure phenomena of buckling and yield strength for the tested combination of parameters. The study analyzed the sensitivity analysis of individual parameters and their combination for maximum buildability and developed the low order polynomial regression equation for each printing parameter and geometrical factors. Based on the analysis of the results, the study also proposed different new printing strategies to increase the overall performance of the printing process.

Abstract:Recently, 3D concrete printing (3DCP) technology starts entering the market from factories and laboratories, contributing to the creation of new construction methods and architectural forms. However, since the technologies of most 3DCP institutions are independently developed, there is a lack of consensus in terms of construction methods and development approaches in the industry. In this paper, based on 42 3DCP architectural works completed in last five years, a quantitative analysis was made to evaluate the impacts of the fabrication system on 3DCP building forms. The paper introduced three criteria, including Workspace Index, Geometric Complexity Index, and Tectonic Prospect Index, analyzing and answering the discussions about “adopting in-situ printing or prefabrication”, “using gantry printers or robotic arms” from the perspective of architectural form. By analyzing specific construction methods and design strategies in these projects, the research summarized three development trends, “mobile equipment, algorithmic structure, and intelligent construction”, which will affect the future development of 3DCP building forms. Finally, the paper discussed the advantages, limitations, and potential of four different 3DCP fabrication systems, expecting to point out the directions to further optimize each system and realize more diverse 3DCP buildings.

Abstract:3D printing is a process that has become widely used in recent years, allowing the production of parts with relatively complicated shapes from metallic and non-metallic materials. In some cases, it is challenging to evaluate the ability of 3D printers to make fine details of parts. For such an assessment, the printing of samples showing intersections of surfaces with low angle values was considered. An experimental plan was designed and materialized to highlight the influence of different factors, such as the thickness of the deposited material layer, the printing speed, the cooling and filling conditions of the 3D-printed part, and the thickness of the sample. Samples using areas in the form of isosceles triangles with constant height or bases with the same length, respectively, were used. The mathematical processing of the experimental results allowed the determination of empirical mathematical models of the power-function type. It allowed the detection of both the direction of actions and the intensity of the influence exerted by the input factors. It is concluded that the strongest influence on the printer’s ability to produce fine detail, from the point of view addressed in the paper, is exerted by the vertex angle, whose reduction leads to a decrease in printing accuracy.

Abstract:In contrast to conventional subtractive manufacturing methods which involve removing material to reach the desired shape, additive manufacturing is the technology of making objects directly from a computer-aided design model by adding a layer of material at a time. In this study, a comprehensive effort was undertaken to represent the strength of a 3D printed object as a function of layer thickness by investigating the correlation between the mechanical properties of parts manufactured out of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) using fused deposition modeling and layer thickness and orientation. Furthermore, a case study on a typical support frame is done to generalize the findings of the extensive experimental work done on tensile samples. Finally, fractography was performed on tensile samples via a scanning digital microscope to determine the effects of layer thickness on failure modes. Statistical analyses proved that layer thickness and raster orientation have significant effect on the mechanical properties. Tensile test results showed that samples printed with 0.2 mm layer thickness exhibit higher elastic modulus and ultimate strength compared with 0.4 mm layer thickness. These results have direct influence on decision making and future use of 3D printing and functional load bearing parts.

Abstract:3D-Printing, or Additive Manufacturing, has received significant media attention during the last five years. A number of companies are now commercialising materials, design tools, and 3D-Printers and these are being used in a number of sectors for digital manufacturing including aerospace, medical, construction and consumer products. But what impact is 3D-Printing having on electronic packaging and manufacturing? Companies that produce and sell 3D-Printers as well as EDA and MCAD companies are now promoting 3D-Printing towards the electronics sector. This paper details the current status of 3D-printing for the manufacture and packaging of electronic systems, and provides some insights on how it may impact our community in the future. Challenges related to the performance and electrical behaviour of printed conductive materials are discussed as they must meet or better the performance of materials currently used. And of course the overall quality and reliability of any 3D-printed electronic system must meet industry requirements. The paper will detail developments taking place in design and modelling tools and how these can be used in addressing some of these challenges.

Abstract:Construction three-dimensional (3D) printing is an emerging technology within the area of Additive Construction and has the potential of revolutionizing the construction industry and the structural engineering discipline through construction automation. One of the major challenges in construction 3D printing is the lack of understanding of the response of 3D printed elements as well as the lack of design methodologies for such elements. This study proposes a 3D printed concrete (3DPC) wall design, termed RC-framed 3DPC wall, for applications in the seismic force resisting system of low-rise 3DPC buildings. The proposed 3DPC wall is reinforced by an internal reinforced concrete frame that strengthens the 3DPC wall similarly to boundary elements in masonry walls. The proposed 3DPC wall further includes bed-joint reinforcement that provides strength against shear demands and provides stability during printing. This study further discusses connection strategies of the proposed 3DPC wall to roof slabs and the foundation, and, following a limit states approach, formulates strength capacity equations for different in-plane failure mechanisms. In lack of experimental data, the strength equations are validated through finite element analyses as well as through experimental data on concrete block masonry (CBM) walls, with which 3DPC walls bear similarities in terms of the construction approach and are expected to share similar response mechanisms. Comparisons with experimental data were conducted for 16 partially grouted (PG) CBM walls and for 10 confined CBM walls. Comparisons with finite element analysis predictions were conducted for 96 3DPC walls, which varied in terms of bed-joint reinforcement, concrete compressive strength , height-to-length ratio, layer width, and cross-section infill pattern. These comparisons focused on predictions of strength and failure mechanisms. It was observed that the proposed strength design equations could predict the mechanical strength and failure mechanism of 3DPC walls with reasonable accuracy, thus, paving the way to 3DPC building design.

Abstract:The prognosis of manufacturing is confined, asset-light, and is brooded over adaptation to every client's preferences. Additive manufacturing (AM) is a cardinal facilitator of this transition and is anticipated to become a fountainhead in futurity. AM's advancement is transforming the way goods are designed and engineered; however, it still needs recognition from all aspects of the manufacturing industry to realize its maximum potential. AM is regarded as a breakthrough technology in the industry because of its ability to build lightweight, sturdier components and systems. 3D printing, an alias for AM that has swept the industry and popular culture, has enabled researchers to produce intricate forms that would have been difficult to fabricate using traditional techniques. Not long ago, 3D printing was the newest kid on the block; now, since the word "4D printing" is in the limelight, it is straining our ability to explore innovative ideas. Supported by time dimension, 4D printing allows the fabrication of dynamically adjustable geometries by utilizing Smart materials. Abstract:3D printing is an emerging technology to construct complex geometry by adapting layer-by-layer addition technique from a 3-dimensional CAD model. Mass customization, freedom of design, and wastage minimization are the main advantages of Additive Manufacturing (AM) based 3D printing. 3D printing is currently used in many sectors worldwide, such as automotive, aerospace, agriculture, medical, electronics, and other household products. However, the usage of the AM technique is limited in large production sectors due to the limitation of the materials and properties of the produced parts. In this review, the different methods of 3D printing, the materials used in different processes, various fields of applications, and the properties of the different approaches are discussed. Also, the effect of process parameters such as layer thickness, nozzle temperature, platform temperature, printing speed, extruding rate, and layer height in 3d printing was reviewed. This will be helpful for further development of 3D printed product quality and applications in various sectors.

Abstract:Astonishingly 3D printing has excited the world of aerospace. This paper takes stock of the popular 3D printing processes in aerospace. Reasons for their popularity over the traditional manufacturing processes are dwelled upon. Materials developed specially for aerospace applications along with their characteristics are discussed. Ongoing activities related to 3D printing at various companies and organisations around the world are looked into. Project works in the area of extra-terrestrial printing are also highlighted. Even though 3D printing processes are operationally simple, they do have limitations in terms of the type, quality, and quantity of the materials they can handle. This paper underlines these points while discussing drawbacks of the printed components. Challenges associated with 3D printing in microgravity are also touched upon. Finally, a glimpse is taken into the future appearance of aerospace industry with 3D printing.

Abstract:Investigations involving the experimental and numerical analysis of inkjet (powder-based) 3DP are relatively limited for cement mortar materials. This study, by using cement mortar specimens, aimed to determine the optimum strength of 3D printed structural members in all three planes by identifying the compressive strength of cubes, the modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio. In addition, this study aimed to analyse and verify the numerical model for 3D printed cementitious mortar (CP) prisms and beams using an inkjet 3D printer by considering the mechanical behaviour of the printed prisms under compression. Robust and optimal mechanical properties of the 3D printed cementitious mortar obtained from laboratory testing were utilised in the simulation of structural components using ABAQUS software. As inputs for simulation, the strength properties of the printed objects in all three cartesian planes were obtained from test results. The obtained results showed that the printed cementitious materials have orthotropic properties and that the results of experiments were consistent with the analytical solutions and hypothesised model for the different geometric shapes. This finding is extremely valuable in determining the optimum features of 3D printed structures.

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, an object can be viewed both physically and virtually. In both cases, the visualization process consists in a continuous variation of the observer’s perspective. When looking at objects, visual interactivity is achieved by the tandem formed by human vision and the position of the observer. 3D technology allows the viewer to delve into this aspect: starting from a virtual reconstruction. It is possible to go from the virtual 3D reconstruction of a model shown on a display to a real element materialized by means of a scale model or prototype. The innovation of this research lies in the development of an efficient method for printing 3D models, with a specific emphasis on material and time savings. This study aims to obtain the three-dimensional physical model of the walled enclosure of the city of Priego de Córdoba in the Middle Ages, at its time of greatest historical development, i.e., in the late 15th century. To this end, 3D printing technology was applied, which is an innovative method for the realization of architectural scale models. The performance of 3D printers, with different printing formats, was evaluated in terms of efficiency and quality of the architectural scale models. Our theoretical assumption showed that material saving is determined by the orography slopes of the model. Obtaining slopes with values in the range of 1–5%, a large format printer is the most suitable option; in the range of 5–15%, the medium format printer is recommended; and, for a slope greater than 15%, the small format printer should be used.

Abstract:A novel workflow is proposed for forward design, with accurate material property characterization and precise FEA simulation. This workflow supports robust and accurate fabrication of the designed object through an iterative optimization process and accurate control of the final configuration.The material properties of 3D printing polymers, including both PLA and CFPLA, are characterized in a precise way based on the DMA experiments. The characterization results are effectively incorporated into FEA with accurate mathematical models.A sequential FEA is developed to achieve accurate simulation results, considering both the residual stress releasing and the body force creeping. We simulate these two processes in a sequence to precisely derive the final deformation of the fabricated product.Four-dimensional (4D) printing, a new technology emerged from additive manufacturing (3D printing), is widely known for its capability of programming post-fabrication shape-changing into artifacts. Fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based 4D printing, in particular, uses thermoplastics to produce artifacts and requires computational analysis to assist the design processes of complex geometries. However, these artifacts are weak against structural loads, and the design quality can be limited by less accurate material models and numerical simulations. To address these issues, this paper propounds a composite structure design made of two materials - polylactic acid (PLA) and carbon fiber reinforced PLA (CFPLA) - to increase the structural strength of 4D printed artifacts and a workflow composed of several physical experiments and series of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) to characterize materials. We apply this workflow to 3D printed samples fabricated with different printed parameters to accurately characterize the materials and implement a sequential finite element analysis (FEA) to achieve accurate simulations. The accuracy of deformation induced by the triggering process is both computationally and experimentally verified with several creative design examples and is measured to be at least 95%, with a confidence interval of <math>(0.972,0.985)</math>.
