Abstract:On account of complex, dangerous and limited area are urgently explored, an underwater machine which can substitute for people to complete the underwater detection is needed imminently. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have been developed to accomplish the tasks of resource exploration in the sea. However, much higher requirements of mobility and maneuverability are of great concern with the accelerated development of AUV. Recently, vectorial thrusters have been applied to ships and offshore platforms, which can increase propulsion efficiency and flexibility. In this paper, a novel small scale AUV with vectorial thrusters is designed, the hydrodynamic performance, pressure distribution, resistance under different angles of attack (AOAs) in vertical plane motion are calculated by Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The numerical simulation suggests the best underwater gesture of the new-type AUV, beyond that the content of this article will provide a basic reference for the further research of motion control.

Abstract:A trans-media vehicle is a new type of equipment that can adapt to two environments, water and air, to maintain optimal hydrodynamic and aerodynamic performance. However, no matter what kind of trans-media vehicle, its dynamics are much more complicated when traversing the interface of the medium, as the parameters are time-varying due to the change in ambient medium and vehicle attitudes. In order to improve the stability and performance of the trans-media vehicle in complex environments, an accurate mathematical model is established to characterize the dynamics of the trans-media vehicle in this process in this study. The time-varying hydrodynamic coefficients with different attitudes or depths are obtained using computational fluid dynamics software. The mathematical model is solved iteratively using a Runge–Kutta solver to calculate the dynamic response. A prototype of trans-media vehicle is fabricated, and motion experiments are performed in the pool. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the established model and lay the foundation for further controller design, providing a reference for the dynamic modeling of other similar equipment operating in complex environments. The primary novelty of this study lies in the fact that the established dynamic model considers the complex interaction between the attitude of the trans-media vehicle and the inherent different properties of water and air and utilizes computational fluid dynamics software to accurately obtain time-varying coefficients under different attitudes and depths. This approach not only recognizes the criticality of orientation-dependent hydrodynamic coefficients but also incorporates their temporal variations, which were often overlooked in previous studies.

Abstract:The hydrodynamic performance during multidirectional motions of a disk-shaped autonomous underwater helicopter, which are being developed recently, are investigated by means of computational fluid dynamics. High mesh quantity is essential to capture the realistic behavior during the horizontal motion. With the saucer-shaped basic geometry, pulsation of the drag force components against and normal to the moving direction is observed during the horizontal motion, which becomes more obvious with increasing velocity, while the motion is hydrodynamically more stable during the vertical movement with a relatively stable zero lateral force. At both moving directions, when the effect of thrusters are considered, the water flux induced by propellers disturbs the flow field, which enhances drag force fluctuation and moving instability. It is concluded that a high-performance controlling system is required to realize a stable and straight motion, or the dishing shape of the vessel needs to be optimized in order to improve the hydrodynamic stability.

Abstract:Current research on the hydrodynamics of manta ray robots is limited to the qualitative study of pectoral fin performance; other aspects such as the hydrodynamics and motion simulation of the overall robot are rarely addressed. A hydrodynamic analysis is therefore used in this study in conjunction with a six degrees of freedom (6DOF) motion equation to conduct motion simulations predicting the hydrodynamic characteristics and motion performance of a proposed manta ray robot. Though the rising and diving motions of manta ray robots are typically realized through a buoyancy adjustment device or a rudder used for attitude adjustment, these methods are slow. This study accordingly proposes a hybrid manta ray robot driven by two pectoral fins and two vertical propellers used as auxiliary power for attitude adjustment. A structural model of the proposed manta ray robot is provided and used to conduct a complete hydrodynamics analysis and establish the 6DOF motion equation. An empirical equation is then established to describe the hydrodynamics of the pectoral fins, and its applicability is proven using a computational fluid dynamics simulation. The motion of the robot is predicted in different situations using motion simulations, demonstrating that the robot provides relatively good motion performance. The relationship between the forward speed of the robot and the flapping speed of the pectoral fins is then discussed based on the simulation results. The motion simulation results also show that the propellers can effectively adjust the posture of the robot and help to improve robot motion stability by countering the effects of the pectoral fin flapping movement. Finally, the applicability of the 6DOF motion equation simplify verified by a computational fluid dynamics motion simulation. The findings of this study are expected to provide theoretical guidance for the optimization of the proposed manta ray robot structure and its control system design.

Abstract:Quadrotor unmanned underwater is a new type of autonomous underwater vehicle with the features of good stability and maneuverability.Facing the problem of designing the shape of the quadrotor unmanned underwater vehicle,traditional design method cannot be suitable for the special underwater vehicle.In view of quadrotor unmanned underwater special structure,the impact of positions of propels on the water resistance and the reason for resistance coefficients were analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation.Then,optimization design for the purpose of the minimum water resistance was carried out.The results show that the water resistance of the optimized shape has been sharply reduced.
Comprehensive Performance Optimization of Autonomous Underwater Helicopter Based on PSO

Abstract:In this paper, a multi-objective optimization design is carried out mainly for the comprehensive performance of the autonomous underwater helicopter(AUH). The AUH is a new type of autonomous underwater vehicle, and its disc shape gives it good maneuverability. Comprehensive performance optimization of the AUH shape is beneficial to improve its endurance and load capacity. This paper firstly establishes an optimization mathematical model aiming at the minimum drag coefficient and maximum volume. The drag coefficient is then solved by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Then the factors affecting drag coefficient and volume were studied by design of experiment(DOE). Finally, the two objectives are optimized by particle swarm optimization(PSO). The results show that there is a negative correlation between the drag coefficient and the volume size. After optimization, a series of Pareto optimal solutions were obtained. According to the principle of priority of resistance coefficient, the final resistance coefficient was reduced by 10.6% compared with the initial value, and the volume was increased by 23.3%. The results show that the method adopted in this paper is effective and has a guiding role for the actual shape design.

Abstract:This paper studies on a new disk-shaped AUV namely "Autonomous Underwater Helicopter" proposed at the Ocean College of Zhejiang University. The reliability of the numerical method is verified by comparison with the experimental data, in which the additional mass of the ellipsoid similar to that of the autonomous underwater helicopter is calculated. Based on the overlapping grid technology of fluid simulation software STAR-CCM+, the hydrodynamic performances of autonomous underwater helicopter in heaving motion and swaying motion are calculated under different inlet velocities and different frequencies, which provides an important references for the subsequent research and design of submarines.

Abstract:A conceptual design of bio-mimetic autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) based on parallel twin flapping wings is proposed, and its hydrodynamic performance at Re=200 are investigated by numerically solving the incompressible viscous Navier Stokes equations coupled with the immersed boundary method. Compared to a single flapping wing, the existence of the AUV body helps to reduce the drag forces or enhance the thrust force that acting on the twin flapping wings. The AUV body inhibits the tip vortices on the near-body side of the flapping wings, resulting the asymmetric vortex streets in the wakes and the circular vortex ring is no longer observed in the wakes. The correlations of the flow structures, the hydrodynamic interactions and the hydrodynamic performance of the AUV are discussed.

Abstract:In this study, the motion stability of a new type of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) named an “autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH)” with a disk-shaped hull was analyzed to better accomplish the complex tasks under the sea, namely, pipeline maintenance, mobile observation network, resources exploration, and isodepth navigation. A Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) grid for the AUH was created with an ICEM mesh generation tool. The RANS-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique, ANSYS-CFX, was adopted to analyze the AUH's behavior, including its motion stability and maneuverability in the horizontal and vertical planes. Pivotal hydrodynamic technical issues including configurations selection and a trade-off study of the AUH were analyzed with the RANS solver, including computed pressure distribution and comparison of different lengths of aquatic transducers mounted on the AUH for enhanced hydrodynamic performance. The Routh motion stability criterion based on the 6-DOF equations of motion consisting of linear hydrodynamic derivatives was implemented by the RANS solver for the optimized AUH with a service speed in the range of 1–3 knots. The simulation results and experimental tests show that the AUH has ample motion stability for enhanced maneuverability in translational and rotatory motion during under-sea navigation. The results suggest that design configurations of the appended hull can be used on AUVs.

Abstract:To achieve good control of an autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH), it is of great significance to study its hydrodynamic quantities. In the present study, hydrodynamic analysis of a disk-shaped AUH is carried out by using three-dimensional (3D) improved delayed detached eddy simulations for the complex flow around an AUH model with main installed structures. The Reynolds numbers based on the incoming flow velocity and diameter of the AUH are in the range of (4–8)×105. The predicted drag and lift coefficients of the AUH at three different incoming flow velocities (0.35, 0.5, and 0.75 m/s) with five different pitch angles of (−15°, − 7.5°, 0°, 7.5°, and 15°) are analyzed. When the pitch angle increases from 0° to ±15°, the value of CD increases from 0.50 to 0.67. The value of CL decreases from 0.73 to −0.89 with the increasing pitch angle from −15° to 15°. The drag and lift coefficients of the AUH at three different incoming flow velocities with five different pitch angles are analyzed. The vortical flow structures of the three typical pitch angle cases subjected to an incoming flow velocity of 0.5 m/s are presented and discussed. A drag force element decomposition analysis is employed to further reveal the relationship between the wake flow and the hydrodynamic forces. It is found that the inverse ultrashort base line sensor and global positioning system antenna have significant contributions to the drag force. Furthermore, dynamic mode decomposition is applied to study the large-scale wake flow structures behind the AUH. The dominant modes are selected by using a sparsity-promoted algorithm. The modal analysis results reveal the spatial distributions of the large-scale 3D flow structures. It is indicated that vortical structures at different frequencies can be generated due to the installations on the AUH and different pitch angles.

Motion and Control Simulation of A Dished Autonomous Underwater Helicopter

Abstract:This paper presents the motion simulation of an autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH), a new type of underwater vehicle proposed by Zhejiang University. In order to determine whether its controllability meets the design requirements, a singularity-free unit quaternion stable control method is used for simulating the AUH performance in MATLAB, including its force and trajectory under different types of motion. In addition, reliable hydrodynamic coefficients and properties of the AUH were determined by using Fluent, a well-known viscous computational fluid dynamics software. Finally, according to the results of the motion and control simulation, we preliminarily confirm the propeller model and layout of the AUH, and demonstrate that the applied control method meets the stated requirements.
Computational Fluid Dynamics Study on Magnus Force of an Autonomous Underwater Helicopter

Abstract:The underwater vehicles are always being disturbed by ocean current when they work under the sea. In this paper, the Magnus force of a new type autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) named “autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH)”, a disk-shaped deep-sea underwater vehicle, was analyzed to help it move away from a deep-sea region with temporary ocean current. The simulation technique of the ANSYS-CFX solver based on viscous computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to analyze the hydrodynamic performance of the spinning AUH in the uniform inflow conditions. The simulation results show that the AUH's spinning behavior can obviously alter the pressure distribution on the both sides of the AUH, hence resulting in a lateral force, i.e. Magnus force and this induced force enables the spinning AUH successfully move away from a sudden, transient and/or steady, uniform ocean current region with inflow velocities of 1–2 knots under the deep-sea conditions. Finally, this study provides an important reference about interdependent relationship between effective spinning speed of the AUH subjected to controlled propeller revolution, speed and range of the ocean current.

Abstract:In this study, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the Autonomous Underwater Helicopter surging near the seabed are studied by numerical simulation and experiment. The influence from the cruising velocity, altitudes as well as the inclination angle of the seabed are considered. For the condition of flat seabed, the simulation shows that the seafloor mainly affects the flow field at the bottom and rear part of the AUH, which changes the pressure resistance, and consequently affects the total resistance. In addition, bulges at the top and bottom of the AUH are the cause of the abnormal lift force. For the condition of sloping seabed, at the same surging velocity and cruising height, the resistance of AUH is more than twice of the one over flat seabed, and the irregular eddy current intensity at the tail of AUH increases with the increasing slope angle. The hydrodynamic performance from simulation agrees with the findings from the water-channel experiment with the adoption of a scaled model of the vessel. It is further discovered that hydrodynamic characteristics of AUH change more obviously with the angle of attack when it is more close to the seabed. Therefore, the hydrodynamic performance of AUH near the sloping seabed can be improved by adjusting the angle of attack.

Abstract:The hydrodynamic performance of a novel hovering autonomous underwater vehicle, the autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH), with an original disk-shaped hull (HG1) and an improved fore–aft asymmetric hull (HG3), is investigated by means of computational fluid dynamics with the adoption of overlapping mesh method. The hydrodynamic performance of the two hull shapes in surge motion with variation of the angle of attack is compared. The results show that HG3 has less resistance and higher motion stability compared to HG1. With the angle of attack reaching 10 degrees, both HG1 and HG3 achieve the maximum lift-to-drag ratio, which is higher for HG3 compared to HG1. Furthermore, based on the numerical simulation of the plane motion mechanism test (PMM) and according to Routh’s stability criterion, the horizontal movement and vertical movement stability indexes of HG1 and HG3 (GHHG1=1.0, GVHG1=49.7, GHHG2=1.0, GVHG3=2.1) are obtained, which further show that the AUH has better vertical movement stability than the torpedo-shaped AUV. Furthermore, the scale model tail velocity experiment indirectly shows that HG3 has better hydrodynamic performance than HG1.

Abstract:Autonomous underwater helicopter, referred to as AUH, has high maneuverability in the horizontal plane and stable movement in the vertical direction due to its disc shape. Thus, the AUH demonstrates great advantages when working in scenarios that require high accuracy of horizontal movement, fixed height and depth, operation near the seafloor, and so on. In this paper, we propose a new design for an autonomous underwater helicopter with three thrusters in the vertical direction (three-vertical-thrusters), so it is equipped with fewer thrusters while maintaining maneuverability and motion stability. The three-vertical-thruster AUH not only achieves stable attitude control, but also reduces the number of thrusters, enabling the AUH to save space, reduce drag, and decrease power consumption. The three-vertical-thruster structure is designed first and compared with the existing four-vertical-thrusters type to verify its advantages through dynamic analysis and hydrodynamic simulation. The three-vertical-thruster AUH is then modelled, and a compensation method is proposed for its more complex control. The three-vertical-thruster AUH's controllability and stability are also verified by experiments on the basis of the experimental prototypes.
Improvement of hydrodynamic performance of the disk-shaped autonomous underwater helicopter by local shape modification

Abstract:The hydrodynamic performance and the way to reduce the drag and increase the motion stability for a newly developed hovering autonomous underwater vehicle, a disk-shaped AUH (autonomous underwater helicopter), are investigated by computational fluid dynamics as well as pool and water-channel validation experiments. The hydrodynamic property is improved through local modification at the rear part of the original hull geometry (HG1), which results in a fore-aft asymmetric geometry (HG3). From the numerical simulation, it is found that with proper extension and sharpening at the rear part, separation of the boundary layer is delayed and the secondary flow area is effectively suppressed, which results in a remarkable reduction of the hydrodynamic drag as well as the drag and side force fluctuation. For the basic AUH hull, the temporal average drag of HG3 (65.3 N) is 26.5% lower than that of HG1 (88.9 N) at u=2m/s. The HG3 geometry also shows good stability against disturbance by the aquatic cabin attached at the central bottom, as well as propellers imbedded in the hull in a realistic working condition compared to the original geometry.

Abstract:This study employs numerical simulation to investigate the microbubble drag reduction on an axisymmetric body underwater vehicle. The Eulerian multiphase model and the k-ω turbulence model are utilized to simulate gas-liquid two-phase flow. The results show that air injection reduces the frictional drag of the vehicle but increases the pressure drag. The reduction in frictional drag is directly related to the surface air volume fraction. Due to the buoyancy effect, the distribution of bubbles around the vehicle is non-uniform, especially at lower water velocities. After air injection, lower velocity or even flow separation is observed near the tail of the vehicle. The flow separation results in localized energy losses and reduces pressure there, ultimately increasing the pressure drag. The flow separation and pressure drop near the top of the tail section are more severe than near the bottom. Flow separation near the tail is more likely to occur with higher air flow rates and lower water velocities. Considering solely the impact of bubble diameter, smaller bubbles tend to adhere closer to the surface of the vehicle, resulting in a greater reduction in frictional drag but also leading to higher pressure drag.

Abstract:A wing-body-wing blended underwater glider has a high lift-to-drag ratio because of its excellent hydrodynamic shape. To further increase its maneuverability, a thruster mechanism can be added, resulting in a hybrid propulsion wing-body-wing blended underwater glider. However, the hydrodynamic performance characteristics of the hybrid propulsion glider need to be further studied. In this paper, a hybrid propulsion wing-body-wing blended underwater glider is taken as the research object, and the computational fluid dynamics method is adopted to determine the hydrodynamic performance characteristics. The results show that when only the propeller is installed but not working, the hydrodynamic parameters of the glider change less, within 5%. When the thruster is operating, the drag coefficient of the glider increases significantly, requiring the thruster to provide a corresponding rotational speed that results in the required thrust. In addition, the installation position of the thruster has a significant effect on the propulsive performance, and better propulsive performance can be obtained by installing it at the aft. This research further broadens the use of underwater gliders and provides a theoretical basis for the design, development and use of hybrid propulsion wing-body-wing blended underwater gliders.

Abstract:In this paper, the hydrodynamic characteristics of a rim-driven thruster (RDT) behind the hull of an underwater vehicle are investigated. The studied underwater vehicle is the benchmark DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) suboff model, with and without full appendages. In order to verify and validate the numerical model, a grid sensitivity analysis is made for the AFF-1, AFF-8 and the ducted propeller cases, respectively. Then, the resistance and pressure distribution over the surface of the suboff with and without appendages are compared with available experimental measurements and good correlations were observed. As for the propeller, a well-studied ducted propeller, the 19A duct in combination with Ka-47 blades, is employed, and the numerical results exhibit a close relationship with the available experimental data under a wide range of advance coefficients. Afterwards, the self-propulsion characteristics of the suboff models propelled by RDTs using different duct configurations are studied, more specifically, the unsteady effects of the flow field induced by the interactions between propeller and hull under various working conditions. The results indicate that due to the influence of the hull, the RDTs operate in different working conditions compared to open water and exhibit distinct hydrodynamic characteristics. Moreover, the duct profile can have a significant effect on the unsteady pressure fluctuations in the flow field, especially in the vicinity of the propeller.

Simulation research on water-entry impact force of an autonomous underwater helicopter

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Autonomous Underwater Helicopter (AUH) is a novel dish-shaped multi-functional submersible vehicle in the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) family. Numerical study of launch and recovery system for AUVs from a research vessel is significant in the overall design. Single-arm crane and air-launch way are the important ways of launching AUVs with the high expertise and security. However, AUVs are still easily subject to a huge impact load which can cause the body damage, malfunction of electronic components, and other serious accidents when AUVs are launching into water. In this paper, unsteady, incompressible, two-phase flow with identified boundary conditions was modeled in the computational domain using Volume of Fluid (VOF) technology, and different overset-grid sizes were set and analyzed to ascertain the accuracy of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation first due to the setting of the grid which will directly affect the accuracy of the calculation results, especially the overset-grid convergence validation. Then, the change of water-entry impact force and velocity of AUH with different water-entry velocities and angles were calculated by CFD analysis software STAR-CCM + solver. The proper immersion angle of the AUH should be 75° under comprehensive analysis and comparison. Besides, the variations of pressure distribution of the AUH in the whole water-entry process were also obtained, which provides reference for the shape optimization in the future work.</p>
