Abstract:Vertical earthquake components have a high devastating potential, especially for near-fault earthquakes. IS 1893 (Part-I):2016 suggests that the effect of vertical earthquakes shall be considered for the stability and safety of the dam or its components, but no specific guidelines are provided for modeling the dam under vertical earthquakes. In this paper, the response of a concrete gravity dam to Vertical Ground Motion (VGM) is quantified using eight near-fault seismic excitations. A modal analysis has been conducted to calculate the damping, horizontal and vertical time-period of the dam. The horizontal earthquake component and horizontal plus vertical component were used for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of the concrete gravity dam using Abaqus software. Consistent with the requirements of ASCE 7-05 and ATC-63, eight recordings of near-fault earthquake excitations are chosen from the PEER NGA database, four with pulse and four without pulse. Various parameters are used to evaluate the dam’s response such as the relative horizontal displacement, relative vertical displacement, relative horizontal acceleration, relative vertical acceleration, response spectra for relative horizontal acceleration, response spectra for relative vertical acceleration, maximum principal stress in the vertical direction and tensile failure crack pattern in the dam. This study quantifies the impact of vertical earthquake components on the safety and stability of concrete gravity dams. In addition, this demonstrates that a non-linear dynamic analysis of concrete gravity dams under vertical earthquake components is essential.
