Abstract:The objective of this research is to explore the role of social media on employee recruitment. As technology continues to grow, human activities cannot be separated from the use and benefits of technology. Technology also helps companies run their business more efficiently. Social media also plays a crucial role in the recruitment process to find potential candidates. This systematic review paper is written based on the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) method. The findings show that social media can be used as an effective platform for a faster and more flexible recruitment process. Social media recruitment can also provide advantages for both in terms of cost and time. Furthermore, social media can be a tool for employers to obtain information about candidates' backgrounds
Social media recruitment for mental health research: A systematic review

Abstract:Background: Social media holds exciting promise for advancing mental health research recruitment, however, the extent and efficacy to which these platforms are currently in use are underexplored. Objective: A systematic review was conducted to characterize the current use and efficacy of social media in recruiting participants for mental health research. Method: A literature review was performed using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsychINFO. Only non-duplicative manuscripts written in the English language and published between 1/1/2004-3/31/2019 were selected for further screening. Data extracted included study type and design, participant inclusion criteria, social media platform, advertising strategy, final recruited sample size, recruitment location, year, monetary incentives, comparison to other recruitment methods if performed, and final cost per participant. Results: A total of 176 unique studies that used social media for mental health research recruitment were reviewed. The majority of studies were cross-sectional (62.5%) in design and recruited adults. Facebook was overwhelmingly the recruitment platform of choice (92.6%), with the use of paid advertisements being the predominant strategy (60.8%). Of the reviewed studies, substance abuse (43.8%) and mood disorders (15.3%) were the primary subjects of investigation. In 68.3% of studies, social media recruitment performed as well as or better than traditional recruitment methods in the number and cost of final enrolled participants. The majority of studies used Facebook for recruitment at a median cost per final recruited study participant of $19.47. In 55.6% of the studies, social media recruitment was the more cost-effective recruitment method when compared to traditional methods (e.g., referrals, mailing). Conclusion: Social media appears to be an effective and economical recruitment tool for mental health research. The platform raises methodological and privacy concerns not covered in current research regulations that warrant additional consideration.

OBJECTIVE We performed a pilot study to explore the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of Facebook advertisements for the recruitment of an online agricultural health and safety survey. METHODS We undertook a 1-week advertising campaign utilizing the integrated, targeted advertising platform of Facebook Ads Manager with a target-spending limit of US $294. We created and posted three advertisements depicting varying levels of agricultural safety adoption leading to a brief survey on farm demographics and safety attitudes. We targeted our advertisements toward farm mothers aged 21-50 years in the United States and determined cost-effectiveness and potential biases. No participant incentive was offered. RESULTS We reached 40,024 users and gathered 318 advertisement clicks. Twenty-nine participants consented to the survey with 24 completions. Including personnel costs, the cost per completed survey was US $17.42. Compared to the distribution of female producers in the United States, our advertisements were unexpectedly overrepresented in the eastern United States and were underrepresented in the western United States. CONCLUSIONS Facebook Ads Manager represents a potentially cost-effective and timely method to recruit participants for online health and safety research when targeting a specific population. However, social media recruitment mirrors traditional recruitment methods in its limitations, exhibiting geographic, response, and self-selection biases that need to be addressed.

Abstract:This study examines how social media pages can be used to influence potential applicants' attraction. Based on the uses and gratifications theory, this study examines whether organizations can manipulate the communication characteristics informativeness and social presence on their social media page to positively affect organizational attractiveness. Moreover, we examine whether job applicants' sought gratifications on social media influence these effects. A 2 × 2 between-subjects experimental design is used. The findings show that organizations can manipulate informativeness and social presence on their social media. The effect of manipulated informativeness on organizational attractiveness depends on the level of manipulated social presence. When social presence was high, informativeness positively affected organizational attractiveness. This positive effect was found regardless of participants' sought utilitarian gratification. Social presence had no significant main effect on organizational attractiveness. There was some evidence that the effect of social presence differed for different levels of social gratification.

Abstract:Background Recruiting participants into clinical trials continues to be a challenge, which can result in study delay or termination. Recent studies have used social media to enhance recruitment outcomes. An assessment of the literature on the use of social media for this purpose is required. Objective This study aims to answer the following questions: (1) How is the use of social media, in combination with traditional approaches to enhance clinical trial recruitment and enrollment, represented in the literature? and (2) Do the data on recruitment and enrollment outcomes presented in the literature allow for comparison across studies? Methods We conducted a comprehensive literature search across 7 platforms to identify clinical trials that combined social media and traditional methods to recruit patients. Study and participant characteristics, recruitment methods, and recruitment outcomes were evaluated and compared. Results We identified 2371 titles and abstracts through our systematic search. Of these, we assessed 95 full papers and determined that 33 studies met the inclusion criteria. A total of 17 studies reported enrollment outcomes, of which 9 achieved or exceeded their enrollment target. The proportion of participants enrolled from social media in these studies ranged from 0% to 49%. Across all 33 studies, the proportion of participants recruited and enrolled from social media varied greatly. A total of 9 studies reported higher enrollment rates from social media than any other methods, and 4 studies reported the lowest cost per enrolled participant from social media. Conclusions While the assessment of the use of social media to improve clinical trial participation is hindered by reporting inconsistencies, preliminary data suggest that social media can increase participation and reduce per-participant cost. The adoption of consistent standards for reporting recruitment and enrollment outcomes is required to advance our understanding and use of social media to support clinical trial success.

Abstract:We assess the effectiveness of paid ads on social media platforms as a research recruitment tool with Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM). We deployed four paid ad campaigns July–September 2022 in English and Spanish on Meta and Grindr featuring happy or risqué images of LMSM, documenting engagement and cost metrics. The four campaigns generated a total of 1,893,738 impressions and 1078 clicks (0.057 click-through rate) with a total cost of $7,989.39. Of the 58 people who accessed the study screener, 31 completed it (53.4%), 13 were eligible (22.4%), but none enrolled. Comparing platforms, Meta had higher engagement metrics than Grindr, while Grindr had higher proportions of those who completed the screener (57.9%) and were eligible (26.3%) than Meta (52.6% and 21.0%, respectively). Challenges to using paid ads as an LMSM recruitment tool included intersecting pandemics (Mpox, COVID-19), and limited connection between platforms and staff for study enrollment.

Abstract:This research aims at addressing the apparent lack of consensus in the literature on the efficiency-effectiveness promise of e-recruitment by adding the dimension of the used e-channel. In other words, this paper explores to what extent the e-channel used by a company could alter the efficiency and effectiveness of the recruitment process and, hence, generate a sub-optimal result. This research highlights the critical importance of the used e-channels for an efficient and effective e-recruitment process. Moreover, it enriches the literature by showing how companies may use a combination of several e-channels in the aim of taking advantage of the complementary that exists between them, hence optimizing the use of e-channels.

Abstract:Background With improved accessibility to social media globally, health researchers are capitalizing on social media platforms to recruit participants for research studies. This has particularly been the case during the COVID-19 pandemic, when researchers were not able to use traditional methods of recruitment. Nevertheless, there is limited evidence on the feasibility of social media for recruiting a national sample. Objective This paper describes the use of social media as a tool for recruiting a national sample of adults to a web-based survey during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Between August and October 2020, participants were recruited through Facebook via two advertisement campaigns (paid option and no-cost option) into a web-based survey exploring the relationship between social determinants of health and well-being of adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were analyzed using SPSS software and Facebook metrics that were autogenerated by Facebook Ads Manager. Poststratification weights were calculated to match the Australian population on the basis of gender, age, and state or territory based on the 2016 Australian census data. Results In total, 9594 people were reached nationally with the paid option and potentially 902,000 people were reached through the no-cost option, resulting in a total of 1211 survey responses. The total cost of the advertisement campaign was Aus $649.66 (US $489.23), resulting in an overall cost per click of Aus $0.25 (US $0.19). Conclusions Facebook is a feasible and cost-effective method of recruiting participants for a web-based survey, enabling recruitment of population groups that are considered hard to reach or marginalized. Recruitment through Facebook facilitated diversity, with participants varying in socioeconomic status, geographical location, educational attainment, and age.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relative effectiveness of different forms of Facebook advertising in promoting the collections and services of academic libraries. The results of several Facebook advertising campaigns conducted by an academic library in Hong Kong are presented and analyzed. Statistics were gathered from the advertising application integrated into the social networking platform. Conclusions are drawn based on a comparison of the performance metrics of the different advertising approaches that were employed. In line with an earlier study, the results provide further support for the view that social network advertising has the potential to be a cost‐effective means of marketing academic libraries. It was also found that advertising strategies that draw upon the social features of Facebook were more effective than traditional approaches. Since only the experience of a single institution is considered, it cannot be definitively stated that social network advertising will be effective in every institutional context. However, the results provide a basis for academic libraries to consider experimenting with this form of marketing. In contrast with the business and commercial sector, the potential of paid social network advertising has received scant attention from professionals working in non‐profit making organizations. This paper provides evidence that such initiatives can have a significant and measurable impact in their outreach efforts with minimal financial outlay.

Abstract:The use of paid advertisements on social media, in particular Meta platforms, to create samples for online survey research is becoming increasingly common. In addition to researchers working on hard-to-reach populations, Meta’s promise of unmediated, quick, and cheap access to a large pool of survey takers across the world is appealing also for researchers who want to create diverse samples of national populations for cheaper prices. Yet the design of Meta’s advertisement optimization algorithm complicates the use of Meta advertisements for this purpose, as it generates a trade-off between cost-effectiveness and sample representativeness. In this paper, we rely on original online surveys conducted in the United Kingdom, Turkey, Spain, and the Czech Republic to explore how two primary tools determining the audience of Meta advertisements, i.e., campaign objectives and demographic targeting, affect the recruitment process, response quality, and sample characteristics. In addition to documenting the trade-offs between the cost and representativeness in Meta samples, our paper also shows that researchers can create high-quality, cost-efficient, and diverse samples if they use the right combination of Meta advertisement tools.

Abstract:Social networking sites (SNS) are used to promote brands, products or services through targeted marketing campaigns, but the precise effectiveness of these campaigns has yet to be established (Van Noort et al. 2012). The research question we address in this study is whether commercial communication via SNS is cognitively effective. A review of the literature clearly shows that if a commercial message receives no prior attention, the likelihood that it will be processed by and influence the consumer is negligible (Chan et al. 2004).For the purposes of this study we consider that an individual has given attention to a message when the advertising information transmitted has an impact on his or her memory, in the form of brand recall and recognition. A classical post-test survey design was used to examine the responses of a panel of Facebook users to advertising formats displayed within the site. The type of advertising format was used as a control factor to determine the impact on the cognitive effectiveness of the message transmitted. The study has a twofold objective: (1) to examine which of the formats most commonly used in social media advertising condition attention types; and (2) to analyse the effect of advertising pressure on consumer attention and brand recall.Social media advertising is an effective communication tool for attracting user attention, leading to higher attention levels than those recorded for advertising in other online contexts. Differences are observed in user attention to distinct advertising stimuli, with video found to be the most effective format for attracting user attention in SNS. However, higher advertising pressure leads to lower attention levels and poorer recall rates. Active exposure to social media advertising leads to higher recall rates of the messages transmitted. The constraints of this study include the use of single product/brand, and the experimental conditions of the data collection stage. Among our future areas of research we propose to evaluate attention in behavioural terms, using a range of tools including eye-tracking to provide empirical evidence of attention rates for social media advertising.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of the research is to highlight the use of social media and information technology in employee recruitment by providing a conceptual recruitment model in the aspects of theoretical foundations and empirical evidence on the factors and outcomes leading to the use of social media recruiting technology (SMART). Design/methodology/approach: A total of 4,481 organizations are listed as the population of the study, and a total of 589 responses are used in the study for data analysis. Selection of the sample is done based on the simple random sampling technique. Appropriateness of sample size is confirmed with the help of G*Power (3.1.9.2) software, which calculated a sample size of 326 with 99% power, a multiple correlation (R) of 0.30, and at a significance level of 0.05. Findings: The paper provides empirical insights into the elements of the extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology; i.e., performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, habit, and price value have positive relations with the intention to adopt social media recruiting technology, and the intention impacts use of social media recruiting technology. Furthermore, the use of social media recruiting technology impacts outcome variables, i.e., social media recruiting time, cost, and recruitment quality, which establish the extension of the recruitment model with all factors and outcomes. Originality: This study provides a model of employee recruitment to win the battle of acquiring human capital using social media recruiting technology as a step toward sustainable development, which has been conceptually defined and empirically tested. The comprehensiveness of the model has never been discussed in earlier studies. Practical implications: Through this research, organizations will get an opportunity to experience enhancement in the scope of recruitment as a whole instead of considering recruitment as a traditional procedure, and the use of information technology can be expanded for progressive measures for future purposes and pandemic situations.
Successful and Cost-Effective Facebook Recruitment: Is It Possible? Results From a Longitudinal Randomized Clinical Trial in Grandmother Caregivers

Abstract:Facebook is often cited in health-related research as a practical option to recruit participants into research studies, but issues with recruiting verifiable and qualified participants and unpredictable costs exist. The purpose of this paper is to describe a social network theory-guided, no-cost, Facebook recruitment strategy in comparison to a traditional recruitment campaign for a national online intervention study for grandmother caregivers (n = 348); 211 participants were recruited via Facebook, and 137 through traditional techniques. Participation rates did not vary by recruitment method. Facebook participants were slightly older, higher income, and more likely to be white and married, but did not differ in education levels. Our strategy quickly obtained an engaged and committed participant base. The application of social network theory to traditional recruitment strategies represents a novel way for researchers to recruit through Facebook and yield viable and engaged participants without investing in Facebook ads.
Technology adoption in employee recruitment: The case of social media in Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract:Social technologies are increasingly used in several organizational functions, including human resource management. The focus of this study is on social media adoption in employee recruitment and selection in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The theoretical lens used in this study is the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), extended to include the impact of the recruiters' managerial position and educational level on technology adoption. Results obtained from partial least squares path modeling, using cross-sectional data collected from 224 recruiters, showed that the core hypotheses of the UTAUT were supported, namely the positive impact of performance expectancy, effort expectancy and social influence on behavioral intention, as well as the positive impact of facilitating conditions and behavioral intention on usage behavior. As expected, the recruiters' characteristics triggered many interaction effects, but none of them impacted facilitating conditions. Managerial implications are discussed and future research suggestions are provided.

Abstract:The use of social media as a recruitment tool for research with humans is increasing, and likely to continue to grow. Despite this, to date there has been no specific regulatory guidance and there has been little in the bioethics literature to guide investigators and institutional review boards (IRBs) faced with navigating the ethical issues such use raises. We begin to fill this gap by first defending a nonexceptionalist methodology for assessing social media recruitment; second, examining respect for privacy and investigator transparency as key norms governing social media recruitment; and, finally, analyzing three relatively novel aspects of social media recruitment: (i) the ethical significance of compliance with website "terms of use"; (ii) the ethics of recruiting from the online networks of research participants; and (iii) the ethical implications of online communication from and between participants. Two checklists aimed at guiding investigators and IRBs through the ethical issues are included as appendices.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of the study is to conduct a Bibliometric analysis of Recruitment Marketing. Theoretical framework: Recruitment Marketing is a technique that has evolved recently to nurture candidates before they apply for a job. Understanding and applying recruitment marketing techniques is essential to retain a talent pool. Since Recruitment Marketing is a new strategy, there is still much to research and discover. Design/methodology/approach: The current scenario of publications from 2000-2020 on Recruitment Marketing listed in the Clarivate Web of Science database was explored in this bibliometric study. To build a bibliometric map, descriptive and inferential statistical methods were utilized. Bibliometric analysis was performed using R-based software Biblioshiny. Findings: The findings revealed that the topic is not well established in the literature but has scope for growth in the coming future. The results reported that only very few studies were undertaken in the area of recruitment marketing globally. USA and Australia are the countries which contributed articles in this area when compared to other countries. The most commonly used words are 'loyalty,' 'attraction,' and 'conceptual-model'. New developments in recruitment marketing have not been sufficiently studied and understood logically and concisely. This study utilized a conceptual framework to organize and analyze the field's various research streams and themes. These themes and subthemes have suggested research recommendations and crucial research areas. Research, Practical & Social implications: Authors recommend in-depth study for the future and identify the areas that need more exploration. The current study can help researchers and recruiters to analyze the upcoming recruiting trends and strategies. Originality/value: The study is found to be primary and original research that contributes to the bibliometric representation of recruitment marketing.

Abstract:With the popularity of social media, social media marketing has become an integral part of corporate marketing strategies. However, due to the continuous changes in social media platforms and marketing strategies, effectively evaluating the effectiveness of social media marketing activities has become a focal point of concern for businesses. Therefore, researching statistical methods and applications for evaluating the effectiveness of social media marketing is of both theoretical and practical significance. This article adopts a literature review approach to analyze relevant studies on the evaluation of social media marketing effectiveness in recent years, summarizing the current research progress and existing problems. The main research content of this article includes an analysis of social media user behavior, an evaluation of social media advertising effectiveness, an assessment of social media communication effectiveness, surveys on social media user satisfaction, and long-term tracking and analysis of social media marketing effectiveness. These research contents contribute to a better understanding of the actual effects of social media marketing activities for businesses, thereby optimizing marketing strategies and increasing marketing efficiency and return on investment. This study concludes that statistical methods and applications for evaluating the effectiveness of social media marketing are significant both theoretically and practically. Through in-depth mining and analysis of social media data, researchers can reveal the patterns behind social media marketing activities, providing decision support for businesses.
Social Media Use for Research Participant Recruitment: Integrative Literature Review

Abstract:Background Social media tools have provided health researchers with the opportunity to engage with communities and groups in a nonconventional manner to recruit participants for health research. Using social media to advertise research opportunities and recruit participants facilitates accessibility to participants from broad geographical areas and diverse populations. However, little guidance is provided by ethics review boards for researchers to effectively use this recruitment method in their research. Objective This study sought to explore the literature on the use of social media for participant recruitment for research studies and identify the best practices for recruiting participants using this method. Methods An integrative review approach was used to synthesize the literature. A total of 5 health sciences databases, namely, EMBASE (Ovid), MEDLINE (Ovid and EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (Ovid), Scopus (Elsevier), and CINAHL Plus with Full Text (EBSCOhost), were searched using predefined keywords and inclusion and exclusion criteria. The initial search was conducted in October 2020 and was updated in February 2022. Descriptive and content analyses were applied to synthesize the results, and the findings are presented in a narrative and tabular format. Results A total of 96 records were included in this review, 83 (86%) from the initial search and 13 (14%) from the updated search. The publication year ranged between 2011 and 2022, with most publications (63/96, 66%) being from the United States. Regarding recruitment strategy, 45% (43/96) of the studies exclusively used social media, whereas 51% (49/96) used social media in conjunction with other strategies. The remaining 4% (4/96) provided guidelines and recommendations for social media recruitment. Notably, 38% (36/96) of these studies involved hard-to-reach populations. The findings also revealed that the use of social media is a cost-effective and efficient strategy for recruiting research participants. Despite the expanded use across different populations, there is limited participation of older adults in social media recruitment. Conclusions This review provides important insights into the current use of social media for health research participant recruitment. Ethics boards and research support services in academic institutions are encouraged to explicitly provide researchers with guidelines on the use of social media for health research participant recruitment. A preliminary guideline prepared based on the findings of this review is proposed to spark further development in this area.
