Abstract:Lattice QCD provides a promising method of addressing the elusive non-perturbative aspect of hadronic physics. It may be used in an investigation of underlying quark dynamics which is not based on model dependent calculations. The study of electromagnetic form factors allows a comparison of the predictions of the quark model and the Skyrme model with those of non-perturbative model independent approaches such as Lattice QCD and the QCD Sum Rule method. The first lattice calculations of electroma~etic form factors focussed on the electric form factor of the pion with SU(2) color [I]. These were later extended to SU(3) color [2]. Calculations of the electric form factor of the proton followed [3]. Most recently, both the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton and neutron were calculated [4]. Here the analysis of reference [4] is extended to calculate the electromagnetic form factors of the octet baryons. Electric and magnetic form factors have been calculated (from twoand three-point baryon correlation functions) on a quenched 24 x 12 x 12 x 24 lattice with p = 5.9. A small value of momentum transfer (I&X = 2x/24) was investigated for three values of quark mass (K = 0.152,0.154,0.156). nom these form factors, electric and magnetic charge radii, magnetic moments and magnetic transition moments have been extracted. More details of the method of calculation as outlined in reference j4] are provided in reference [5]. The results illustrate the manner in which quarks account for the electromagnetic structure of baryons. An outstanding problem of hadronic physics has been to explain the magnetic moments of baryons. In figure 1, we have collected recent results of alternative approaches to the strong interaction. The results of SU(6) symmetry, the sum rule approach [S], our lattice calculation, a recent quark model [7], and the Skyrme model [8] are compared to experimental ratios of magnetic moments. (The experimental and sum rule results for Co are obtained using the SU(2) relationship ~E:D = (PC+ + lc-)f2.) The quark model results differ significantly from those of the simple quark model only in the value of the Cmagnetic ratio which has been shifted from -0.391 to -0.505. The quark model (with four parameters) does not reproduce the magnetic moment ratios as well as the sum rule or lattice results. Only the N and A magnetic ratios are accurately reproduced. The Skyrme model (with two parameters) reverses the order of many of the SU(6) partners. The results of the sum rule approach (which has vacuum susceptibility parameters optimized to give the best agreement with experimental magnetic moments) are very similar to those of the lattice with the exception of the 2where non-perturbative and strange-quark mass effects are very large in the sum rule calculation.

Abstract:Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) has significantly contributed to our understanding of the CKM matrix through precise determinations of hadronic matrix elements. With advancements in theoretical methodologies and computational resources, investigations can now extend to processes involving QCD-unstable hadrons such as the $\rho$ and $K^\star(892)$. These resonances play vital roles in processes such as weak decays of $B$ mesons, opening new avenues for exploration. Finite-volume lattice QCD techniques involving complex computational methods are used to determine the transition amplitudes. Here, we present preliminary results for $B\to\rho\ell\bar{\nu}$.

Light Quark Masses from Lattice QCD

Abstract:We present estimates of the masses of light quarks using lattice data. Our main results are based on a global analysis of all the published data for Wilson, Sheikholeslami-Wohlert (clover), and staggered fermions, both in the quenched approximation and with $n_f=2$ dynamical flavors. We find that the values of masses with the various formulations agree after extrapolation to the continuum limit for the $n_f=0$ theory. Our best estimates, in the MSbar scheme at $\mu=2 GeV$, are $\mbar=3.4 +- 0.4 +- 0.3 MeV$ and $m_s = 100 +- 21 +- 10 MeV$ in the quenched approximation. The $n_f=2$ results, $\mbar = 2.7 +- 0.3 +- 0.3 MeV$ and $m_s = 68 +- 12 +- 7 MeV$, are preliminary. (A linear extrapolation in $n_f$ would further reduce these estimates for the physical case of three dynamical flavors.) These estimates are smaller than phenomenological estimates based on sum rules, but maintain the ratios predicted by chiral perturbation theory. The new results have a significant impact on the extraction of $\epsilon'/\epsilon$ from the Standard Model. Using the same lattice data we estimate the quark condensate using the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation. Again the three formulations give consistent results after extrapolation to $a=0$, and the value turns out to be correspondingly larger, roughly preserving $m_s \vev{\bar \psi \psi}$.

Abstract:I present preliminary results of next-generation lattice-QCD calculations of the $\Lambda_b \to p$, $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda$, and $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c$ form factors based on RBC/UKQCD gauge-field ensembles with 2+1 flavors of domain-wall fermions. Compared to the work published in 2015 and 2016, the new calculations include three additional ensembles (one with 139 MeV pion mass, one with 0.073 fm lattice spacing, and one with another volume) and were performed with a more accurate tuning of the charm and bottom anisotropic clover action parameters.

Abstract:In this write-up we review and update our recent lattice QCD calculation of $B \to K^*$, $B_s \to \phi$, and $B_s \to K^*$ form factors [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1310.3722" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.3722">arXiv:1310.3722</a>]. These unquenched calculations, performed in the low-recoil kinematic regime, provide a significant improvement over the use of extrapolated light cone sum rule results. The fits presented here include further kinematic constraints and estimates of additional correlations between the different form factor shape parameters. We use these form factors along with Standard Model determinations of Wilson coefficients to give Standard Model predictions for several observables [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1310.3887" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.3887">arXiv:1310.3887</a>]. The modest improvements to the form factor fits lead to improved determinations of $F_L$, the fraction of longitudinally polarized vector mesons, but have little effect on most other observables.

Long-distance contribution to $ε_K$ from lattice QCD

Abstract:A lattice QCD approach to the calculation of the long-distance contributions to $\epsilon_K$ is presented. This parameter describes indirect CP violation in $K\to\pi\pi$ decay. While the short-distance contribution to $\epsilon_K$ can be accurately calculated in terms of standard model parameters and a single hadronic matrix element, $B_K$, there is a long-distance part which is estimated to be approximately $5\%$ of the total and is more difficult to determine. A method for determining this small but phenomenologically important contribution to $\epsilon_K$ using lattice QCD is proposed and a complete exploratory calculation of the contribution is presented. This exploratory calculation uses an unphysical light quark mass corresponding to a 339 MeV pion mass and an unphysical charm quark mass of 968 MeV, expressed in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme at 2 GeV. This calculation demonstrates that future work should be able to determine this long-distance contribution from first principles with a controlled error of 10\% or less.

Abstract:We present the current status of $\varepsilon_K$ evaluated directly from the standard model using lattice QCD inputs. The lattice QCD inputs include $\hat{B}_K$, $\xi_0$, $\xi_2$, $|V_{us}|$, $m_c(m_c)$, and $|V_{cb}|$. Recently, FLAG has updated $\hat{B}_K$, exclusive $|V_{cb}|$ has been updated with new lattice data in the $\bar{B}\to D\ell\bar{\nu}$ decay mode, and RBC-UKQCD has updated $\xi_0$ and $\xi_2$. We find that the standard model evaluation of $\varepsilon_K$ with exclusive $|V_{cb}|$ (lattice QCD inputs) is $3.2\sigma$ lower than the experimental value, while that with inclusive $|V_{cb}|$ (heavy quark expansion) shows no tension.

Abstract:We present results for $\varepsilon_K$, the indirect CP violation parameter, calculated in the Standard Model using inputs from lattice QCD: the kaon bag parameter $\hat{B}_K$, and the CKM matrix element $V_{cb}$ from the axial current form factor for the exclusive decay $\bar{B}\to D^*\ell\bar{\nu}$ at zero-recoil. In addition, we take the coordinates of the unitarity triangle apex $(\bar{\rho},\bar{\eta})$ from the angle-only fit of the UTfit Collaboration and use $V_{us}$ to fix $\lambda$. In order to estimate the systematic error, we also use Wolfenstein parameters from the CKMfitter and UTfit. We find a $3.3(2)\sigma$ difference between $\varepsilon_K$ and experiment with exclusive $V_{cb}$. We report details of this preliminary result.

Abstract:We analyze the color-magnetic (or "$B$") field two-point function that encodes the finite-mass correction to the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient. The simulations are done on fine isotropic lattices in the quenched approximation at $1.5\,T_c$, using a range of gradient flow times for noise suppression and operator renormalization. The continuum extrapolation is performed at fixed flow time followed by a second extrapolation to zero flow time. Perturbative calculations to next-to-leading order of this correlation function, matching gradient-flowed correlators to MS-bar, are used to resolve nontrivial renormalization issues. We perform a spectral reconstruction based on perturbative model fits to estimate the coefficient $\kappa_B$ of the finite-mass correction to the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient. The approach we present here yields high-precision data for the correlator with all renormalization issues incorporated at next-to-leading order, and is also applicable for actions with dynamical fermions.

2023 Update of $\varepsilon_K$ with lattice QCD inputs

Abstract:We report recent progress on $\varepsilon_K$ evaluated directly from the standard model (SM) with lattice QCD inputs such as $\hat{B}_K$, $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{us}|$, $|V_{ud}|$, $\xi_0$, $\xi_2$, $\xi_\text{LD}$, $f_K$, and $m_c$. We find that the standard model with exclusive $|V_{cb}|$ and lattice QCD inputs describes only 66\% of the experimental value of $|\varepsilon_K|$ and does not explain its remaining 34\%, which corresponds to a strong tension in $|\varepsilon_K|$ at the $4.9\sigma \sim 3.9\sigma$ level between the SM theory and experiment. We also find that this tension disappears when we use the inclusive value of $|V_{cb}|$ obtained using the heavy quark expansion based on the QCD sum rule approach.

Abstract:We present our study of the $\rho(770)$ and $K^*(892)$ resonances from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) employing domain-wall fermions at physical quark masses. We determine the finite-volume energy spectrum in various momentum frames and obtain phase-shift parameterizations via the Lüscher formalism, and as a final step the complex resonance poles of the $\pi \pi$ and $K \pi$ elastic scattering amplitudes via an analytical continuation of the models. By sampling a large number of representative sets of underlying energy-level fits, we also assign a systematic uncertainty to our final results. This is a significant extension to data-driven analysis methods that have been used in lattice QCD to date, due to the two-step nature of the formalism. Our final pole positions, $M+i\Gamma/2$, with all statistical and systematic errors exposed, are $M_{K^{*}} = 893(2)(8)(54)(2)~\mathrm{MeV}$ and $\Gamma_{K^{*}} = 51(2)(11)(3)(0)~\mathrm{MeV}$ for the $K^*(892)$ resonance and $M_{\rho} = 796(5)(15)(48)(2)~\mathrm{MeV}$ and $\Gamma_{\rho} = 192(10)(28)(12)(0)~\mathrm{MeV}$ for the $\rho(770)$ resonance. The four differently grouped sources of uncertainties are, in the order of occurrence: statistical, data-driven systematic, an estimation of systematic effects beyond our computation (dominated by the fact that we employ a single lattice spacing), and the error from the scale-setting uncertainty on our ensemble.

$ Δ$ baryon spectroscopy in lattice QCD

Abstract:A variational analysis is performed within the framework of lattice QCD to extract the masses of the spin-3/2 positive parity $ \Delta^+ $ baryons, including radial excitations. $2+1$ flavour dynamical gauge-field configurations provided by the PACS-CS collaboration via the ILDG are considered. To improve our interpolator basis, we perform an iterative process of source and sink smearing and solve a generalised eigenvalue problem using the resulting fermion operators. We obtain a clear signal for the ground and first excited states at a light quark mass corresponding to $ m_\pi = 413 $ MeV. Furthermore, we show that one can use the eigenvectors obtained in this method to investigate the nature of these states, allowing us to classify our results as $ 1s $ and $ 2s $ states for the ground and first excited states respectively. Finally, we briefly highlight the method of Hamiltonian Effective Field Theory which can be used to make comparison with quark model expectations.

Abstract:We give the first accurate results for $B$ and $B_s$ meson masses from lattice QCD including the effect of $u$, $d$ and $s$ sea quarks, and we improve an earlier value for the $B_c$ meson mass. By using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action for $u/d$, $s$ and $c$ quarks and NRQCD for the $b$ quarks, we are able to achieve an accuracy in the masses of around 10 MeV. Our results are: $m_B$ = 5.291(18) GeV, $m_{B_s}$ = 5.363(11) GeV and $m_{B_c}$ = 6.280(10) GeV. Note that all QCD parameters here are tuned from other calculations, so these are parameter free tests of QCD against experiment. We also give scalar, $B_{s0}^*$, and axial vector, $B_{s1}$, meson masses. We find these to be slightly below threshold for decay to $BK$ and $B^*K$ respectively.

Abstract:We discuss the main issues in dealing with heavy quarks on the lattice and shortly present the different approaches used. We discuss a selection of computations covering first the b-quark mass and the B(s) meson decay constants as the consolidated results (neglecting isospin breaking corrections). In the second part we consider recent calculations of form factors for tree-level semileptonic decays with emphasis on the tensions between the results produced by different collaborations. We propose benchmark quantities and tests suited to investigate the origin of such tensions. Finally, we review computations of the bag parameters parameterising neutral meson mixing and provide an overview on a few recent developments in the field.

Highly excited $B$, $B_s$ and $B_c$ meson spectroscopy from lattice QCD

Abstract:Excited state spectra of $B$, $B_s$ and $B_c$ mesons are computed using lattice QCD. Working with a large basis of carefully constructed, approximately-local $q\bar{q}$-like operators we determine a rich spectrum of states up to $J=4$ in $B, B_s$ and $B_c$, that can be grouped into patterns matching those of the quark model. In addition, hybrid-like states are identified at approximately 1500 MeV above the ground states in each of $B, B_s$ and $B_c$, in a multiplet pattern already found in similar computations at a range of quark masses spanning light to bottom. This study is performed using an anisotropic, relativistic Wilson-clover action at a single spatial lattice spacing of $a_s\approx 0.12$ fm and with a light-quark mass corresponding to $m_\pi\approx 391$ MeV. We find good agreement with experimental results where known and discuss prospects for further work in interesting $J^P$ quantum numbers.

Abstract:The rare kaon decays K -> pi nu(nu) over bar are strongly suppressed in the standard model and widely regarded as processes in which new phenomena, not predicted by the standard model, may be observed. Recognizing such new phenomena requires a precise standard model prediction for the branching ratio of K -> pi nu(nu) over bar with controlled uncertainty for both short-distance and long-distance contributions. In this work we demonstrate the feasibility of lattice QCD calculation of the long-distance contribution to rare kaon decays with the emphasis on K+ -> pi(+)nu(nu) over bar Our methodology covers the calculation of both W-W and Z-exchange diagrams. We discuss the estimation of the power-law, finite-volume corrections and two methods to consistently combine the long-distance contribution determined by the lattice methods outlined here with the short-distance parts that can be reliably determined using perturbation theory. It is a subsequent work of our first methodology paper on K -> pi l(+)l(-), where the focus was made on the gamma-exchange diagrams.
Chebyshev and Backus-Gilbert reconstruction for inclusive semileptonic $B_{(s)}$-meson decays from Lattice QCD

Abstract:We present a study on the nonperturbative calculation of observables for inclusive semileptonic decays of $B_{(s)}$ mesons using lattice QCD. We focus on the comparison of two different methods to analyse the lattice data of Euclidean correlation functions, specifically Chebyshev and Backus-Gilbert approaches. This type of computation may eventually provide new insight into the long-standing tension between the inclusive and exclusive determinations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. We report the results from a pilot lattice computation for the decay $B_s \rightarrow X_c \, l\nu_l$, where the valence quark masses are approximately tuned to their physical values using the relativistic-heavy quark action for the $b$ quark and the domain-wall formalism for the other valence quarks. We address the computation of the total decay rate as well as leptonic and hadronic moments, discussing similarities and differences between the two analysis techniques.

Abstract:The rare kaon decays K -> pi l(+)l(-) and K -> pi nu(nu) over bar are flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes and hence promising channels with which to probe the limits of the standard model and to look for signs of new physics. In this paper we demonstrate the feasibility of lattice calculations of K -> pi l(+)l(-) decay amplitudes for which long-distance contributions are very significant. We show that the dominant finite-volume corrections (those decreasing as powers of the volume) are negligibly small and that, in the four-flavor theory, no new ultraviolet divergences appear as the electromagnetic current J and the effective weak Hamiltonian H-W approach each other. In addition, we demonstrate that one can remove the unphysical terms which grow exponentially with the range of the integration over the time separation between J and H-W. We will now proceed to exploratory numerical studies with the aim of motivating further experimental measurements of these decays. Our work extends the earlier study by Isidori et al. [1] which focused largely on the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences. In a companion paper [2] we discuss the evaluation of the long-distance contributions to K -> pi nu(nu) over bar decays; these contributions are expected to be at the level of a few percent for K+ decays.
