Abstract:In studies with focus on the phenomenon of dreaming a variety of methodologies have been used. Besides the classical techniques of collecting dreams in dream diaries also a variety of questionnaires and database systems are in use. As an example, we present here the multidimensional dream questionnaire “Dreamland”. With these techniques, and depending on the research question, different aspects of dreaming are assessed and analyzed. Nevertheless, the heterogeneity of these techniques hinders objectivity and reproducibility of the results of dream content analysis. In addition, also the diversity of interpretations and theoretical concepts about the origin or the meaning of dreams and dreaming contributes to these limitations. Future research on dream content analysis should be more focused on questions about the combination and integration of these diverse methodological approaches and techniques. Moreover, linguistic approaches offer new possibilities in dream content analysis.

Abstract:Multidimensional statistical procedures were used to analyze three corpuses of dream reports on the basis of their word content, automatically and without any a priori coding of their meaning. The analyses revealed that the same clusters of dream reports were found consistently in all three datasets. Each cluster of dream content was characterized by a specific predominant cognitive category such as recent memory, visuo-spatial processing, verbal activity, reasoning, or emotions. In addition, the analysis of a 15-months dream diary from the same individual showed that the proportion of different clusters of dreams remained stable over time. We also show that the identification of these well-defined and common cognitive characteristics in dream reports could provide important insights into the processing of information within specialized brain regions during sleep. In conclusion, dream reports contain valuable information about the cognitive processes and brain functions that participate to their generation.

Abstract:Dreams offer a unique window into the cognitive and affective dynamics of the sleeping and the waking mind. Recent quantitative linguistic approaches have shown promise in obtaining corpus-level measures of dream sentiment and topic occurrence. However, it is currently unclear how the affective content of individual dreams relates to their semantic content and structure. Here, we combine word embedding, topic modeling, and network analysis to investigate this relationship. By applying Discourse Atom Topic Modeling (DATM) to the DreamBank corpus of >18K dream reports, we represent the latent themes arising within dreams as a sparse dictionary of topics and identify the affective associations of those topics. We show that variation in dream affect (valence and arousal) is associated with changes in topical content. By representing each dream report as a network of topics, we demonstrate that the affective content of dreams is also coupled to semantic structure. Specifically, positively valenced dreams exhibit more coherent, structured, and linear narratives, whilst negatively valenced dreams have more narrative loops and dominant topics. Additionally, topic networks of high arousal dreams are structurally dominated by few high arousal topics and incoherent topical connections, whereas low arousal dreams contain more loops. These findings suggest that affective processes are associated with both the content and structure of dreams. Our approach showcases the potential of integrating natural language processing and network analysis with psychology to elucidate the interplay of affect, cognition and narrative in dreams. This methodology has broad applications for the study of narrated experience and psychiatric symptomatology.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Methods for quantifying emotional dream content have been developed. These approaches have yielded significant insights into dream content, their relation to waking cognition, and mental health. The current dream rating scale was developed to improve upon previous approaches by conceptualizing the scale based on the known fundamental affective neuronal circuits within the brain. Methods Seventy-seven items were developed representing fundamental emotions (SEEKING, RAGE, FEAR, LUST, CARE, GRIEF and PLAY). One-hundred dreams were randomly selected from a dream database (www.dream-bank.net). To determine interrater agreement, two raters scored all 77-items for each of the 100 dreams based on if the emotional content was present or not. Items with an interrater agreement (kappa) below .5 were excluded. Nightmares (i.e., extremely unpleasant or disturbing dreams) were independently identified by a sleep-trauma expert and compared to non-nightmares for the 7 scales. Results Thirty-three items (kappa > 0.5; range .5-.82) were retained for the final scale. Of the items retained, 29 (85%) were endorsed in 10% or more of dreams. The most frequently identified items in the final scale were danger (44%) and fear (45%). Seven emotional dream scales were apriori identified with 3-9 items each being retained in the final scales. Scales were significantly correlated between raters (r = .54 to .88, p< .001). Across the 100 dreams FEAR was the highest endorsed emotion scale while GRIEF was lowest. As expected, nightmares had significantly elevated scores compared to non-nightmares on the FEAR, RAGE, SEEKING and GRIEF scales (p< .001) but not CARE, LUST, or PLAY. Conclusion This dream rating scale based on mammalian emotional circuits previously identified through affective neuroscience shows promise for quantifying and understanding the emotional content of dreams. Future studies will need to further validate this preliminary affective dream content scale using different populations including individuals exposed to trauma and those with mental health and sleep disorders to determine its clinical utility. Abstract:Background: Sexual dreams reflect the waking-day life, social problems and ethical concerns. The related experience includes different people and settings, and brings various feelings, but there is no systematic measure available to date.Methods: We have developed a statement-matrix measuring the sexual dream experience and trialed it in a sample of 390 young Chinese university students who had a life-long sexual dream.Results: After both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, we have established a satisfactory model of four-factor (32 items).Together with an item measuring the sexual dream frequency, we developed a Sexual Dream Experience Questionnaire (SDEQ) based on the 32 items, and subsequently named four factors (scales) as joyfulness, aversion, familiarity and bizarreness. No gender differences were found on the four scale scores, and no correlations were found between the four scales and the sexual dream frequency or the sexual experience in real life.Conclusion: The SDEQ might help to characterize the sexual dreams in the healthy people and psychiatric patients. Abstract:Sleep scientists have shown that dreaming helps people improve their waking lives, and they have done so by developing sophisticated content analysis scales. Dream analysis entails time-consuming manual annotation of text. That is why dream reports have been recently mined with algorithms, and these algorithms focused on identifying emotions. In so doing, researchers have not tackled two main technical challenges though: (i) how to mine aspects of dream reports that research has found important, such as characters and interactions; and (ii) how to do so in a principled way grounded in the literature. To tackle these challenges, we designed a tool that automatically scores dream reports by operationalizing the widely used dream analysis scale by Hall and Van de Castle. We validated the tool’s effectiveness on hand-annotated dream reports (the average error is 0.24), scored 24 000 reports—far more than any previous study—and tested what sleep scientists call the ‘continuity hypothesis’ at this unprecedented scale: we found supporting evidence that dreams are a continuation of what happens in everyday life. Our results suggest that it is possible to quantify important aspects of dreams, making it possible to build technologies that bridge the current gap between real life and dreaming.

Abstract:Recently,theory-of-mind investigations have been extended to children's understandings of mental processes,such as children's understandings of the controllability of mental processes.The first purpose of the present study was to reveal the development of children's understandings of the controllability of dreams in preschools and elementary schools.The second purpose of the present study was to investigate whether the emotional valence of dreams affects children's understandings of the controllability of dreams.The participants were 36 five-years-olds,36 seven-years-olds and 36 nine-years-olds,with approximately equal numbers of boys and girls in each age group.They were from one preschool and two elementary schools in Hangzhou,China.All the children were interviewed individually.Each child was asked to hear four stories about characters who would like to dream something or not to,and to judge whether the characters were able to dream what he would like to,and to explain why.Two of the stories were about characters whose dreams are of either positive or negative emotional valence;the other two with neutral emotions.The data was analyzed by Chi-square test,Kruskal-Wallis test,Jonckheere-Terpstra test and Sign test.The results showed:(1)The nine-year-olds were better at realizing that dreaming was an uncontrollable process than the five-year-olds and the seven-year-olds.(2)The five-year-olds claimed dreams with negative emotions were more easily controlled than those with neutral emotions.The results indicated that children did not realize that dreaming was an uncontrollable process in preschool years,and their beliefs that dreams were uncontrollable had significant development during the elementary school years,and the emotional valence of dreams affected children's understandings of the controllability of dreams in preschool years.
Dream Content Discovery from Reddit with an Unsupervised Mixed-Method Approach

Abstract:Dreaming is a fundamental but not fully understood part of human experience that can shed light on our thought patterns. Traditional dream analysis practices, while popular and aided by over 130 unique scales and rating systems, have limitations. Mostly based on retrospective surveys or lab studies, they struggle to be applied on a large scale or to show the importance and connections between different dream themes. To overcome these issues, we developed a new, data-driven mixed-method approach for identifying topics in free-form dream reports through natural language processing. We tested this method on 44,213 dream reports from Reddit's r/Dreams subreddit, where we found 217 topics, grouped into 22 larger themes: the most extensive collection of dream topics to date. We validated our topics by comparing it to the widely-used Hall and van de Castle scale. Going beyond traditional scales, our method can find unique patterns in different dream types (like nightmares or recurring dreams), understand topic importance and connections, and observe changes in collective dream experiences over time and around major events, like the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent Russo-Ukrainian war. We envision that the applications of our method will provide valuable insights into the intricate nature of dreaming.

Phenomenological features of dreams: Results from dream log studies using the Subjective Experiences Rating Scale (SERS)

Abstract:Self-ratings of dream experiences were obtained from 144 college women for 788 dreams, using the Subjective Experiences Rating Scale (SERS). Consistent with past studies, dreams were characterized by a greater prevalence of vision, audition, and movement than smell, touch, or taste, by both positive and negative emotion, and by a range of cognitive processes. A Principal Components Analysis of SERS ratings revealed ten subscales: four sensory, three affective, one cognitive, and two structural (events/actions, locations). Correlations (Pearson r) among subscale means showed a stronger relationship among the process-oriented features (sensory, cognitive, affective) than between the process-oriented and content-centered (structural) features--a pattern predicted from past research (e.g., Bulkeley & Kahan, 2008). Notably, cognition and positive emotion were associated with a greater number of other phenomenal features than was negative emotion; these findings are consistent with studies of the qualitative features of waking autobiographical memory (e.g., Fredrickson, 2001).

Abstract:This investigation was designed to evaluate a new dream content measure, the Casto Spirituality Scoring System. Therefore, our research question was: "Can the spiritual content of dream reports be identified and measured?" We randomly selected 20 male and 20 female dream reports obtained in dream seminars in each of six countries. We added 20 dream reports from one U.S. female and one U.S. male undergoing "spiritual development" programs. Of the 280 dream reports in our collection, 59 contained spiritual content, according to our definition of "spiritual" as one's focus on, and/or reverence, openness, and connectedness to something of significance believed to be beyond one's full understanding and/or individual existence. The research question was answered affirmatively in so far as the Casto Spirituality Scoring System yielded high reliability when the scores of two judges, working independently, were compared. These initial results are promising but further research needs to be done before the usefulness of this system can be fully demonstrated. Key words: dreams, spirituality, consciousness, survey

Abstract:Introduction Dream activity has been associated with individuals’ characteristics, such as attachment and emotional processing (Levin & Nielsen, 2009; McNamara et al., 2014). Relational schemas are frequent in dreams and could express early maladaptive schemas (EMS; Young et al., 2003). Sparse empirical studies suggest that attachment insecurity may be associated to dreams’ content, but none links attachment to EMS nor explore defense mechanisms as an index of affect regulation. Objective The goal of this study was to contrast profiles of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) in different dream types (recent, recurring, and disturbing) and to explore their associations to attachment and primitive defenses. Method An online questionnaire was completed by 217 participants in which dream narratives were collected. Participants also completed questionnaires to assess attachment insecurity and defenses maturity. Two judges coded narratives by using the Schema-Related Dream Coding System. Results Profile analyses revealed more frequent EMS in recurring and disturbing dreams, independently of attachment insecurities. Multiple regression analyses indicated that insecure attachment and primitive defenses are both associated with vulnerable representations in disturbing dreams. Conclusion Relational representations differ according to dream types. Moreover, those EMS are associated with core dimensions of psychological functioning. This study suggests ways to understand vulnerability representations expressed in dreams of individuals presenting relational and emotional difficulties.

Abstract:A consistent body of evidence suggests that dream reports significantly vary from other types of textual transcripts with respect to semantic content. Furthermore, it appears to be a widespread belief in the dream/sleep research community that dream reports constitute rather ``unique'' strings of text. This might be a notable issue for the growing amount of approaches using natural language processing (NLP) tools to automatically analyse dream reports, as they largely rely on neural models trained on non-dream corpora scraped from the web. In this work, I will adopt state-of-the-art (SotA) large language models (LLMs), to study if and how dream reports deviate from other human-generated text strings, such as Wikipedia. Results show that, taken as a whole, DreamBank does not deviate from Wikipedia. Moreover, on average, single dream reports are significantly more predictable than Wikipedia articles. Preliminary evidence suggests that word count, gender, and visual impairment can significantly shape how predictable a dream report can appear to the model.
A New Way of Analysing Dreams on Its Profoundest Level: The Development of Motif Analysis and Phase Model (MAP) as an Extension of Structural Dream Analysis (SDA)

Abstract:Dream research today assumes that there is a connection between dreams and waking life. However, the structural alteration of dream motifs in connection with the psychotherapeutic process and waking life has not yet been researched extensively. This study depicts the development of the new Motif Analysis and Phase Model (MAP), a dynamic method which allows research on the previous aspects. The following question was investigated as an accompanying key issue: can a connection be established between the course of the dream patterns and the agency of the dream ego as well as the dream contents and the course of the psychotherapies of the dreaming person as a whole? Four hypotheses were formulated and tested. The data material consists of 217 dreams of a male test subject. The motifs were analysed using Structural Dream Analysis (SDA) at first. Thereafter, the content was linked to the test subject's waking life in a guided interview. The findings show a strong connection between the dream content and the psychotherapies as well as the test subject's waking life. Five motifs with structural changes were found, through which the Phase Model with four phases was developed. At turning points, the transformative child motif also appears in the dreams. The course of the dream patterns and agency of the dream ego, however, has not changed. The results, the method and the generalisability were critically discussed and recommendations for future research were formulated.

Abstract:THE DREAMER'S unquestioning belief in the reality of his fantasy creation while he is sleeping makes one skeptical about his description, when awake, of the original dream experience. Even the language he uses to define and describe his dream is restricted to words learned in response to objects and events of the waking world and is therefore inadequate for the description of characteristics which are unique to dreaming. To overcome this limitation, the verbal report of dreaming sleep must be tied to nonverbal operations performed on or by the dreaming sleeper. The discovery that reports of dreaming are obtained predominately from EEG stage 1-REM4,5 sleep has made it possible for the experimenter to say with a high degree of confidence that his subject is dreaming without having to interrupt the ongoing dream. Testing the Empathy Theory of Dreaming: The Relationships Between Dream Sharing and Trait and State Empathy

Abstract:In general, dreams are a novel but realistic simulation of waking social life, with a mixture of characters, motivations, scenarios, and positive and negative emotions. We propose that the sharing of dreams has an empathic effect on the dreamer and on significant others who hear and engage with the telling of the dream. Study 1 tests three correlations that are predicted by the theory of dream sharing and empathy: that trait empathy will be correlated with frequency of telling dreams to others, with frequency of listening to others' dreams, and with trait attitude toward dreams (ATD) (for which higher scores indicate positive attitude). 160 participants completed online the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire and the Mannheim Dream Questionnaire. Pearson partial correlations were conducted, with age and sex partialled out. Trait empathy was found to be significantly associated with the frequency of listening to the dreams of others, frequency of telling one's own dreams to others, and attitude toward dreams. Study 2 tests the effects of discussing dreams on state empathy, using an adapted version of the Shen (2010) state empathy scale, for 27 pairs of dream sharers and discussers. Dream discussion followed the stages of the Ullman (1996) dream appreciation technique. State empathy of the dream discusser toward the dream sharer was found to increase significantly as a result of the dream discussion, with a medium effect size, whereas the dream sharer had a small decrease in empathy toward the discusser. A proposed mechanism for these associations and effects is taken from the robust findings in the literature that engagement with literary fiction can induce empathy toward others. We suggest that the dream acts as a piece of fiction that can be explored by the dreamer together with other people, and can thus induce empathy about the life circumstances of the dreamer. We discuss the speculation that the story-like characteristics of adult human dreams may have been selected for in human evolution, including in sexual selection, as part of the selection for emotional intelligence, empathy, and social bonding.
How bizarre? A pluralist approach to dream content

Abstract:Are dreams bizarre, nonsensical experiences or real-world simulations? I introduce a pluralist approach to dream content that highlights the philosophical and empirical implications of treating dreaming as a highly varied experience that can be anywhere on a spectrum from truly bizarre and incoherent to wake-like and mundane. Here I discuss several explanations for why theorists disagree on whether dreams should be defined as primarily bizarre or convincing, real-world simulations. Rating scales can underestimate or overestimate bizarreness depending on the variables of the scale and interpretation of contextual factors. Although double blind analysis of dream reports is assumed to be the most accurate method of quantifying dream bizarreness, contextual factors can only be clarified by the dreamer themselves, since only they can judge whether an event would be bizarre in their own lives, however the dreamer might find elements bizarre after waking that they did not find unusual during the dream. Dreams can at times be so bizarre and incoherent that that they are difficult or impossible to report accurately, mundane and indistinguishable from waking life or anything in-between. Both bizarre and mundane dreams should be of great interest to philosophers of mind and cognitive scientists.
Dreaming and the default network: A review, synthesis, and counterintuitive research proposal

Abstract:This article argues that the default network, augmented by secondary visual and sensorimotor cortices, is the likely neural correlate of dreaming. This hypothesis is based on a synthesis of work on dream content, the findings on the contents and neural correlates of mind-wandering, and the results from EEG and neuroimaging studies of REM sleep. Relying on studies in the 1970s that serendipitously discovered episodes of dreaming during waking mind-wandering, this article presents the seemingly counterintuitive hypothesis that the neural correlates for dreaming could be further specified in the process of carrying out EEG/fMRI studies of mind-wandering and default network activity. This hypothesis could be tested by asking participants for experiential reports during moments of differentially high levels of default network activation, as indicated by mixed EEG/fMRI criteria. Evidence from earlier EEG/fMRI studies of mind-wandering and from laboratory studies of dreaming during the sleep-onset process is used to support the argument.

Abstract:Until recently, understanding the neurobiology of dreaming has relied upon on correlating a subjective dream report with a measure of brain activity or function sampled from a different occasion. As such, most assumptions about dreaming come from the neuroscience of rapid eye-movement (REM) sleep from which many, but not all, dream reports are recalled. Core features of REM sleep (intense emotional activation, a reduction in activity in most frontal regions, particularly the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, along with increased dopamine, acetylcholine, cholinergic activation) align with typical dream characteristics (characterised by fear, reduced reality monitoring, increased bizarreness and hyperassociativity, respectively). The default mode network offers a way of understanding the nature of dreaming more independently from a REM sleep context, and electroencephalography methods paired with serial awakenings to elicit dream reports demonstrate how high-frequency activity in posterior regions may be associated with dreaming. Nevertheless, all measures of dreaming rely fundamentally on recall processes, so our understanding of dreaming must embrace and address memory's crucial involvement in dream report production.
A novel method for objectively classifying sequential emotion within dreams: a proof-of-concept pilot study

Abstract:Traditionally, emotions in dreams have been assessed using subjective ratings by human raters (e.g., external raters or dreamers themselves). These methods have extensive support and utility in dream science, yet they have certain innate limitations due to the subjective nature of the rating methodologies. Attempting to circumvent several of these limitations, we aimed to develop a novel method for objectively classifying and quantifying sequential (word-for-word) emotion within a dream report. We investigated whether sentiment analysis, a branch of natural language processing, could be used to generate continuous positive and negative valence ratings across a dream. In this pilot, proof-of-concept study, we used 14 dream reports collected upon awakening following overnight polysomnography. We also collected pre- and post-sleep affective data and personality metrics. Our objectives included demonstrating that (1) valence ratings derived from sentiment analysis (Valence Aware Dictionary for sEntiment Reasoning [VADER]) could be used to visualize (plot) positive and negative emotion fluctuations within a dream, (2) how the visual properties of emotion fluctuations within a dream (peaks and troughs, area under the curve) can be used to generate novel "emotion indicators" as proxies for emotion regulation throughout a dream, and (3) these emotion indicators correlate with sleep, affective, and personality variables known to be associated with dreaming and emotion regulation. We describe 6 novel, objective dream emotion indicators: Total number of Peaks, total number of Troughs, Positive, Negative, and Overall Emotion Intensity (composites from an "area under the curve" method using the trapezoid rule applied to the peaks and troughs), and the Emotion Gradient (a polynomial trendline fitted to the emotion fluctuations in the dream chart). The latter signifies the overall direction of sequential emotion changes within a dream. Results also showed that ⅚ emotion indicators correlated significantly with at least one existing sleep, affective, or personality variable known to be associated with dreaming and emotion regulation. We propose that the novel emotion indicators potentially serve as proxies for emotion regulation processes unfolding within a dream. These preliminary findings provide a methodological foundation for future studies to test and refine the method in larger and more diverse samples.

Abstract:The study explored to what extent dreams have been perceived as being helpful in waking life. More specifically, for "important" waking life (conscious) decision-making, the solving of emotional or nonemotional (practical/technical/work-related) problems, forming/changing an attitude about something or somebody, or a conscious behavioral change of the dreamer (N = 667). On a general level, 62,1% of participants indicated that dreams at some point had been of help or good use (regression analysis found a strong association with dream attitude, measured on Dream Attitude Scale [DAS]). Most often mentioned areas of help were creative input (55,8%) and emotional problem-solving (52,9%). There was a positive association between dream attitude (DAS) and emotional problem-solving and creative input. In all, 8.9% of participants reported that a "dream had influenced an important decision" (e.g., leaving a job, moving, buying a house, or leaving the partner). A regression analysis again indicated that a more positive attitude toward dreams (DAS) was associated with dreams influencing important decisions.
