Abstract:Vitrimers are generally constructed by introducing dynamic covalent bonds into various synthetic or bio-based structures. The wide range of constructing resources and different mechanical properties of resulting networks highlight the fusion of vitrimers with distinct mechanical properties in the recycling process. Herein, we report the difference between conventional polyurethane and pseudo-vitrimer polyurethane with distinct mechanical properties. In details, polyurethane based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with a molecular weight of 200 g/mol as soft segment and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as hard segment is synthesized by prepolymerization method. Also, polyurethane vitrimer is prepared using cysteamine dichloride chain extender in the presence of triethylamine and dithiothritol catalysts. It was found that vitrimer can be successfully fused and after five rounds of recycling, the mechanical and thermal properties are better than conventional polyurethane. Thermal and mechanical tests are performed to study the effect of disulfide bonds on vitrimer behavior and its ability to re-bond broken chains. After tensile tests, it was found that due to the presence of disulfide bonds, vitrimer is able to recycle and maintains properties up to 65% of the initial value, while polyurethane is only able to maintain 15% of the initial properties after 5 cycles of recycling. It is also observed in the AFM images that vitrimer has microphase separation in its structure even after recycling, while there is no microphase separation in polyurethane after one cycle of recycling due to the destruction of the structure.
