Abstract:Depression is a very common mental disorder. The WHO estimated that 5% of adults globally suffer from depression , with more females than males affected by the disorder. [ 1 ] A person who has depression feels sad, empty, and irritable. The person also lacks pleasure in activities that they had previously found enjoyable. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition outlines diagnostic criteria of depressive mood or loss of interest in usual activities for at least 2 weeks. These feelings must be accompanied by at least five symptoms: (a) change in appetite, leading to weight loss or gain, (b) change in sleep patterns, either sleeping too much or not sleeping well, (c) change in movements, either slow or agitated, (d) low energy and fatigue most days, (e) worthless, guilty, and feeling of hopelessness, (f) an inability to focus and the lack of concentration that affect daily activities, and (g) suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts. The symptoms must affect the individual level of functioning significantly.
