Abstract:Autotomy happens when an animal divests itself of an appendage in the interests of survival. A serendipitous observation shows that a sulfakinin/cholecystokinin-type neuropeptide promotes autotomy in starfish, opening a new route to understanding this fascinating phenomenon.
