Abstract:In the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), a list of cities and the distances between them are given. The goal is to find the shortest possible route that visits each city exactly once and returns to the original city. The TSP has a wide range of applications in many different industries including, but not limited to, optimizing mail and shipping routes, guiding industrial machines, mapping genomes, and improving autonomous vehicles. For centuries, traveling salesmen, politicians, and circuit preachers have tackled their own versions of the problem. Within the last century, the TSP has become one of the most important problems in the fields of mathematics and computer science. The time to find an exact solution is often impractically long, which has led to the development of numerous approximation techniques, ranging from linear programming methods to nature-inspired models. Here, we present a novel N-body approach to the TSP.

Abstract:The $k-$traveling salesman problem ($k$-TSP) seeks a tour of minimal length that visits a subset of $k\leq n$ points. The traveling repairman problem (TRP) seeks a complete tour with minimal latency. This paper provides constant-factor probabilistic approximations of both problems. We first show that the optimal length of the $k$-TSP path grows at a rate of $\Theta\left(k/n^{\frac{1}{2}\left(1+\frac{1}{k-1}\right)}\right)$. The proof provides a constant-factor approximation scheme, which solves a TSP in a high-concentration zone -- leveraging large deviations of local concentrations. Then, we show that the optimal TRP latency grows at a rate of $\Theta(n\sqrt n)$. This result extends the classical Beardwood-Halton-Hammersley theorem to the TRP. Again, the proof provides a constant-factor approximation scheme, which visits zones by decreasing order of probability density. We discuss practical implications of this result in the design of transportation and logistics systems. Finally, we propose dedicated notions of fairness -- randomized population-based fairness for the $k$-TSP and geographical fairness for the TRP -- and give algorithms to balance efficiency and fairness.

Abstract:Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is a typical NP-complete problem, of which the search space increases with the number of cities. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is an efficient optimization algorithm characterized with explicit parallelism and robustness, applicable to TSP. In this paper, we compare the performance of the existing GAs in searching the solution for TSP and find a superior combination of crossover and mutation method. Then, the improvements in the Cycle Crossover and Greedy Cross-Cycle Crossover are proposed. Finallyl experimental results show that the new Cycle Crossover and Greedy Crossover algorithms perform much better than the original ones.

Abstract:With applications to many disciplines, the traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a classical computer science optimization problem with applications to industrial engineering, theoretical computer science, bioinformatics, and several other disciplines. In recent years, there have been a plethora of novel approaches for approximate solutions ranging from simplistic greedy to cooperative distributed algorithms derived from artificial intelligence. In this paper, we perform an evaluation and analysis of cornerstone algorithms for the Euclidean TSP. We evaluate greedy, 2-opt, and genetic algorithms. We use several datasets as input for the algorithms including a small dataset, a mediumsized dataset representing cities in the United States, and a synthetic dataset consisting of 200 cities to test algorithm scalability. We discover that the greedy and 2-opt algorithms efficiently calculate solutions for smaller datasets. Genetic algorithm has the best performance for optimality for medium to large datasets, but generally have longer runtime. Our implementations is public available.

Abstract:The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is a classic combinatorial optimization problem that seeks to find the shortest possible route that visits a set of given cities exactly once and returns to the starting city. Despite its simple formulation, the TSP is known to be NP-hard, making it computationally challenging to find an optimal solution, particularly for large problem instances. geometric approaches to solving the TSP, leveraging insights from computational geometry and convex optimization. We begin by formulating the TSP as a graph optimization problem, where cities are represented as nodes and edges represent possible routes between cities. We then investigate geometric algorithms and techniques for efficiently computing approximate solutions to the TSP, aiming to find routes that are close to optimal in terms of length.

Abstract:The travelling salesman problem (TSP) is one of the well-studied NP-hard problems in the literature. The state-of-the art inexact TSP solvers are the Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun (LKH) heuristic and Edge Assembly crossover (EAX). A recent study suggests that EAX with restart mechanisms perform well on a wide range of TSP instances. However, this study is limited to 2,000 city problems. We study for problems ranging from 2,000 to 85,900. We see that the performance of the solver varies with the type of the problem. However, combining these solvers in an ensemble setup, we are able to outperform the individual solver's performance. We see the ensemble setup as an efficient way to make use of the abundance of compute resources. In addition to EAX and LKH, we use several versions of the hybrid of EAX and Mixing Genetic Algorithm (MGA). A hybrid of MGA and EAX is known to solve some hard problems. We see that the ensemble of the hybrid version outperforms the state-of-the-art solvers on problems larger than 10,000 cities.

Abstract:The traveling salesman (or salesperson) problem, short TSP, is a problem of strong interest to many researchers from mathematics, economics, and computer science. Manifold TSP variants occur in nearly every scientific field and application domain: engineering, physics, biology, life sciences, and manufacturing just to name a few. Several thousand papers are published on theoretical research or application-oriented results each year. This paper provides the first systematic survey on the best currently known approximability and inapproximability results for well-known TSP variants such as the "standard" TSP, Path TSP, Bottleneck TSP, Maximum Scatter TSP, Generalized TSP, Clustered TSP, Traveling Purchaser Problem, Profitable Tour Problem, Quota TSP, Prize-Collecting TSP, Orienteering Problem, Time-dependent TSP, TSP with Time Windows, and the Orienteering Problem with Time Windows. The foundation of our survey is the definition scheme T3CO, which we propose as a uniform, easy-to-use and extensible means for the formal and precise definition of TSP variants. Applying T3CO to formally define the variant studied by a paper reveals subtle differences within the same named variant and also brings out the differences between the variants more clearly. We achieve the first comprehensive, concise, and compact representation of approximability results by using T3CO definitions. This makes it easier to understand the approximability landscape and the assumptions under which certain results hold. Open gaps become more evident and results can be compared more easily.

Travelling Santa Problem: Optimization of a Million-Households Tour Within One Hour

Abstract:Finding the shortest tour visiting all given points at least ones belongs to the most famous optimization problems until today [travelling salesman problem (TSP)]. Optimal solutions exist for many problems up to several ten thousand points. The major difficulty in solving larger problems is the required computational complexity. This shifts the research from finding the optimum with no time limitation to approaches that find good but sub-optimal solutions in pre-defined limited time. This paper proposes a new approach for two-dimensional symmetric problems with more than a million coordinates that is able to create good initial tours within few minutes. It is based on a hierarchical clustering strategy and supports parallel processing. In addition, a method is proposed that can correct unfavorable paths with moderate computational complexity. The new approach is superior to state-of-the-art methods when applied to TSP instances with non-uniformly distributed coordinates.

Abstract:The Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) is one of the best-known combinatorial optimisation problems. However, many real-world problems are composed of several interacting components. The Traveling Thief Problem (TTP) addresses such interactions by combining two combinatorial optimisation problems, namely the TSP and the Knapsack Problem (KP). Recently, a new problem called the node weight dependent Traveling Salesperson Problem (W-TSP) has been introduced where nodes have weights that influence the cost of the tour. In this paper, we compare W-TSP and TTP. We investigate the structure of the optimised tours for W-TSP and TTP and the impact of using each others fitness function. Our experimental results suggest (1) that the W-TSP often can be solved better using the TTP fitness function and (2) final W-TSP and TTP solutions show different distributions when compared with optimal TSP or weighted greedy solutions.

Stability of Solutions to Classes of Traveling Salesman Problems

Abstract:By performing stability analysis on an optimal tour for problems belonging to classes of the traveling salesman problem (TSP), this paper derives margins of optimality for a solution with respect to disturbances in the problem data. Specifically, we consider the asymmetric sequence-dependent TSP, where the sequence dependence is driven by the dynamics of a stack. This is a generalization of the symmetric non sequence-dependent version of the TSP. Furthermore, we also consider the symmetric sequence-dependent variant and the asymmetric non sequence-dependent variant. Amongst others these problems have applications in logistics and unmanned aircraft mission planning. Changing external conditions such as traffic or weather may alter task costs, which can render an initially optimal itinerary suboptimal. Instead of optimizing the itinerary every time task costs change, stability criteria allow for fast evaluation of whether itineraries remain optimal. This paper develops a method to compute stability regions for the best tour in a set of tours for the symmetric TSP and extends the results to the asymmetric problem as well as their sequence-dependent counterparts. As the TSP is NP-hard, heuristic methods are frequently used to solve it. The presented approach is also applicable to analyze stability regions for a tour obtained through application of the k -opt heuristic with respect to the k -neighborhood. A dimensionless criticality metric for edges is proposed, such that a high criticality of an edge indicates that the optimal tour is more susceptible to cost changes in that edge. Multiple examples demonstrate the application of the developed stability computation method as well as the edge criticality measure that facilitates an intuitive assessment of instances of the TSP.
A Speed-up for Helsgaun's TSP Heuristic by Relaxing the Positive Gain Criterion

Abstract:The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the most extensively researched and widely applied combinatorial optimization problems. It is NP-hard even in the symmetric and metric case. Building upon elaborate research, state-of-the-art exact solvers such as CONCORDE can solve TSP instances with several ten thousand vertices. A key ingredient for these integer programming approaches are fast heuristics to find a good initial solution, in particular the Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun (LKH) heuristic. For instances with few hundred vertices heuristics like LKH often find an optimal solution. In this work we develop variations of LKH that perform significantly better on large instances. LKH repeatedly improves an initially random tour by exchanging edges along alternating circles. Thereby, it respects several criteria designed to quickly find alternating circles that give a feasible improvement of the tour. Among those criteria, the positive gain criterion stayed mostly untouched in previous research. It requires that, while constructing an alternating circle, the total gain has to be positive after each pair of edges. We relax this criterion carefully leading to improvement steps hitherto undiscovered by LKH. We confirm this improvement experimentally via extensive simulations on various benchmark libraries for TSP. Our computational study shows that for large instances our method is on average 13% faster than the latest version of LKH.

Abstract:The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is one of the most studied problems in combinatorial optimization. Given a set of nodes and the distances between them, it consists in finding the shortest route that visits each node exactly once and returns to the first. Nevertheless, more flexible and applicable formulations of this problem exist and can be considered. The Steiner TSP (STSP) is a variant of the TSP that assumes that only a given subset of nodes must be visited by the shortest route, eventually visiting some nodes and edges more than once. In this paper, we adapt some classical TSP constructive heuristics and neighborhood structures to the STSP variant. In particular, we propose a reduced 2‐opt neighborhood and we show that it leads to better results in smaller computation times. Computational results with an implementation of a GRASP heuristic using path‐relinking and restarts are reported. In addition, ten large test instances are generated. All instances and their best‐known solutions are made available for download and benchmarking purposes.

Abstract:The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is the canonical combinatorial optimization problem famous throughout literature. There exists an objective function associated with every feasible solution. However, the increase in the number of possible solutions makes this an NP-Hard problem. We show that the central limit theorem (CLT) applies to the problem. We then conduct extensive computational testing to show that the cycle lengths tend to a normal distribution as the problem grows large. When the size of the TSP problem exceeds computational power, better understanding solution distributions allows us to save resources. This is a non-trivial result as understanding solution distributions in huge TSP problems helps us to minimize computational effort that may not lead to significantly better results.

Abstract:Meta-heuristics are frequently used to tackle NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. With this paper we contribute to the understanding of the success of 2-opt based local search algorithms for solving the traveling salesman problem (TSP). Although 2-opt is widely used in practice, it is hard to understand its success from a theoretical perspective. We take a statistical approach and examine the features of TSP instances that make the problem either hard or easy to solve. As a measure of problem difficulty for 2-opt we use the approximation ratio that it achieves on a given instance. Our investigations point out important features that make TSP instances hard or easy to be approximated by 2-opt.

Abstract:Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) is an Np-Hard problem, for which various solutions have been offered so far. Using the Harris Hawk Optimization (HHO) algorithm, this paper presented a new method that uses random-key encoding to generate a tour. This method helps maintain the main capabilities of the HHO algorithm, on the one hand, and to take advantage of the capabilities of active mechanisms in the continuous-valued problem space on the other hand. For the exploration phase, the DE/best/2 mutation mechanism employed in the exploitation phase, besides the main strategies in the HHO algorithm, was used. Ten neighborhood search operators are used, four of which are introduced. These operators were intelligently selected using the MCF. The Lin-Kernighan local search mechanism was utilized to improve the proposed algorithm's performance, and the Metropolis acceptance strategy was employed to escape the local optima trap. Besides, 80 datasets were evaluated in TSPLIB to demonstrate the performance and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The results showed the excellent performance of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), a salesman wants to visit a set of cities and return home. There is a cost of traveling from city i to city j , which is the same in either direction for the Symmetric TSP. The objective is to visit each city exactly once, minimizing total travel costs. In the Graphical TSP, a city may be visited more than once, which may be necessary on a sparse graph. We present a new integer programming formulation for the Graphical TSP requiring only two classes of polynomial-sized constraints while addressing an open question proposed by Denis Naddef. We generalize one of these classes, and present promising preliminary computational results.

Abstract:The Traveling Salesman Problem (often called TSP) is a classic algorithmic problem in the field of computer science and operations research. It is an NP-Hard problem focused on optimization. TSP has several applications even in its purest formulation, such as planning, logistics, and the manufacture of microchips; and can be slightly modified to appear as a sub-problem in many areas, such as DNA sequencing. In this paper, a study on parallelization of the Brute Force approach (under several paradigms) of the Travelling Salesman Problem is presented. Detailed timing studies for the serial and various parallel implementations of the Travelling Salesman Problem have also been illustrated.
Dancing to the State of the Art? How Candidate Lists Influence LKH for Solving the Traveling Salesperson Problem

Abstract:Solving the Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) remains a persistent challenge, despite its fundamental role in numerous generalized applications in modern contexts. Heuristic solvers address the demand for finding high-quality solutions efficiently. Among these solvers, the Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun (LKH) heuristic stands out, as it complements the performance of genetic algorithms across a diverse range of problem instances. However, frequent timeouts on challenging instances hinder the practical applicability of the solver. Within this work, we investigate a previously overlooked factor contributing to many timeouts: The use of a fixed candidate set based on a tree structure. Our investigations reveal that candidate sets based on Hamiltonian circuits contain more optimal edges. We thus propose to integrate this promising initialization strategy, in the form of POPMUSIC, within an efficient restart version of LKH. As confirmed by our experimental studies, this refined TSP heuristic is much more efficient - causing fewer timeouts and improving the performance (in terms of penalized average runtime) by an order of magnitude - and thereby challenges the state of the art in TSP solving.

Improved Bounds for the Traveling Salesman Problem with Neighborhoods on Uniform Disks

Abstract:Given a set of $n$ disks of radius $R$ in the Euclidean plane, the Traveling Salesman Problem With Neighborhoods (TSPN) on uniform disks asks for the shortest tour that visits all of the disks. The problem is a generalization of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem(TSP) on points and has been widely studied in the literature. For the case of disjoint uniform disks of radius $R$, Dumitrescu and Mitchell[2001] show that the optimal TSP tour on the centers of the disks is a $3.547$-approximation to the TSPN version. The core of their analysis is based on bounding the detour that the optimal TSPN tour has to make in order to visit the centers of each disk and shows that it is at most $2Rn$ in the worst case. Häme, Hyytiä and Hakula[2011] asked whether this bound is tight when $R$ is small and conjectured that it is at most $\sqrt{3}Rn$. We further investigate this question and derive structural properties of the optimal TSPN tour to describe the cases in which the bound is smaller than $2Rn$. Specifically, we show that if the optimal TSPN tour is not a straight line, at least one of the following is guaranteed to be true: the bound is smaller than $1.999Rn$ or the $TSP$ on the centers is a $2$-approximation. The latter bound of $2$ is the best that we can get in general. Our framework is based on using the optimality of the TSPN tour to identify local structures for which the detour is large and then using their geometry to derive better lower bounds on the length of the TSPN tour. This leads to an improved approximation factor of $3.53$ for disjoint uniform disks and $6.728$ for the general case. We further show that the Häme, Hyytiä and Hakula conjecture is true for the case of three disks and discuss the method used to obtain it. Along the way, we will uncover one way in which the TSPN problem is structurally different from the classical TSP.
