Abstract:
The potential of a calcium silicate hydrate waste product to remove phosphate from sewage treatment plants was tested by using the residue as the sorbent material in an experimental filter bed. Pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion models were used to explain the kinetics of phosphate adsorption on the solid material, and the Freundlich equation successfully predicted phosphate adsorption under equilibrium conditions. The results of the sorption experiments demonstrated that the retention of phosphate is mainly controlled by adsorption processes, although a small fraction is removed from solution via precipitation. The possible reutilization of the phosphate-saturated residue to amend phosphorus-deficient soils was also evaluated. The findings confirm that the phosphate saturated waste can be included in Technosols and used to amend phosphorus deficient soils.
