Abstract:Geopolymer, as a novel inorganic non-metallic cementitious material, exhibits excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and radiation resistance due to its stable disordered structure of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron and aluminum-oxygen tetrahedron. This work combined molecular dynamics simulation and experiments to study the adsorption mechanism of U(VI) in geopolymers with different channel sizes. Firstly, the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of UO 2 2+ , NO 3 − and H 2 O in geopolymers with different pore widths are studied by molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results are characterized by density distribution, radial distribution function (RDF), and mean square displacement (MSD). Subsequently, based on the simulation results, metakaolin with different particle sizes are used to prepare geopolymers with different pore sizes. Then, static adsorption experiments are conducted to study the effects of pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time and initial concentration on the removal performance of U(VI) by geopolymers with different pore sizes. By combining multiple characterization methods with molecular dynamics simulation, the adsorption mechanism of U(VI) by geopolymer is revealed. There exist inner sphere and outer sphere coordination between U(VI) and geopolymer, NO 3 − is adsorbed by electrostatic interaction, while H 2 O is adsorbed by hydrogen bond. Moreover, changes in pore size have a great impact on adsorption. UO 2 2+ has the greatest impact, followed by NO 3 − and finally H 2 O.
