Abstract:This study presents the design and synthesis of a biomass-derived catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) using sea cucumber as a precursor, guided by density functional theory (DFT). Six N, S dual-doped carbon models were designed and evaluated using DFT calculations, revealing lower reaction energy barriers compared to N and S mono-doped carbon models. The N (4.56 at%), S (1.13 at%) dual-doped carbon catalyst, named S-850-2, was synthesized by mixing high-protein sea cucumber and sulfur powder as precursors. Experimental results demonstrated the superior performance of S-850-2 in a 0.1 M KOH solution, with a half-wave potential of 0.862 V and a limiting diffusion current density of − 5.73 mA cm −2 . These values surpassed those of the N mono-doped carbon material (S-850, 0.842 V, and − 5.24 mA cm −2 ). Furthermore, S-850-2 exhibited enhanced durability and methanol/CO tolerance compared to a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. The measured electrochemical and physical results were found to be consistent with DFT predictions, confirming the high efficiency of N, S dual-doped carbon in both theory and experiment. Moreover, S-850-2 was successfully integrated into a Zn-air battery, demonstrating an open circuit voltage of 1.34 V and the ability to power an LED light. These findings not only provide valuable insights into the synthesis of heteroatom-doped carbon ORR catalysts derived from biomass but also highlight the significant potential of N, S dual-doped carbon materials as promising alternatives to Pt-based catalysts in fuel cell applications.
