Abstract:In practical engineering, natural soil deposits often sustain an initial driving force prior to cyclic shear, owing to earthquakes, traffic and waves; such asymmetrical loading conditions may significantly affect the liquefaction susceptibility and failure mechanism of sand. To understand the typical cyclic liquefaction responses, comprehensive asymmetrical cyclic loading tests were conducted on sand samples subjected to either compressional or extensional static stress. The results indicated that different stress conditions can result in three distinct failure mechanisms: flow liquefaction, cyclic mobility and residual deformation accumulation. According to the experimental observations, an anisotropic sand model was developed within the framework of the anisotropic critical state theory. The model employed a fabric-dependent dilatancy, and accounted for the effects of the fabric evolution and accumulated loading index on the plastic hardening, in order to better reflect the cyclic degradation of the plastic modulus. The predictive capacity of the model was confirmed through undrained monotonic test results for samples with different densities. Comparisons between the model responses and experimental results indicated the excellent capabilities of the developed model in terms of capturing the typical deformation, strength and fabric characteristics of different cyclic failure mechanisms of sand under either symmetrical or asymmetrical loading conditions.

Abstract:Concretes with micro-encapsulated healing agents are very appealing due to the advantages of self-healing and the potential for controllable quantifiable healing on a large scale with little initial damage. Based on experimental observation and Taylor's model, a two-dimensional micromechanical damage-healing model of microcapsule-enabled self-healing cementitious materials under tensile loading has been proposed. The healing effect on microcrack-induced damage can now be predicted quantitatively by its microscopic healing mechanism. The kinetic equations of damage-healing evolution and the formulations of compliance after healing are developed. Subsequently, simple and efficient numerical simulations are presented and different system parameters of microcapsule-enabled self-healing concretes, such as the radius and volume fraction of microcapsules, fracture toughness of healing agents and initial damage degree, are investigated. In particular, the proposed micromechanical damage-healing model demonstrates the potential capability to explain and simulate the physical behavior of microcapsule-enabled self-healing materials on the mesoscale.

Abstract:An anisotropic elastic-damage coupled constitutive model for plain concrete is developed, which describes the concrete performance degradation. The damage variable, related to the surface density of micro-cracks and micro-voids, and represented by a second order tensor, is governed by the principal tension strain components. For adequately describing the partial crack opening closure effect under tension and compression for concrete, a new suitable thermodynamic potential is proposed to express the state equations for modeling the mechanical behaviors. Within the framework of thermodynamic potential, concrete strain mechanisms are identified in the proposed anisotropic damage model while each state variable is physically explained and justified. The strain equivalence hypothesis is used for deriving the constitutive equations, which leads to the development of a decoupled algorithm for effective stress computation and damage evolution. Additionally, a detailed numerical algorithm is described and the simulations are shown for uni-axial compression, tension and multi-axial loadings. For verifying the numerical results, a series of experiments on concrete were carried out. Reasonably good agreement between experimental results and the predicted values was observed. The proposed constitutive model can be used to accurately model the concrete behaviors under uni-axial compression, tension and multiaxial loadings. Additionally, the presented work is expected to be very useful in the nonlinear finite element analysis of large-scale concrete structures.
Time-Varying Compressive Strength Model of Aeolian Sand Concrete considering the Harmful Pore Ratio Variation and Heterogeneous Nucleation Effect

Abstract:The aim of this study was to analyze the influence mechanism of aeolian sand on the mechanical property of concrete and establish the time-varying compressive strength model. Test studies on the development of concrete’s compressive strength with aeolian sand from the Mu Us Desert were carried out. Influence mechanism of aeolian sand on the strength of concrete was revealed by using the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to analyze the pore ratio and structures of aeolian sand concrete (ASC) and using the X-ray single crystal diffraction (XRD) to calculate the relative contents of hydration products semiquantitatively. Results show that the strength first increases and then decreases with the increase of aeolian sand content, where 20% was the best replacement ratio. With less than 20% content, it promoted the strength by changing the pore structure of concrete and accelerating the cement hydration speed based on its filling effect and chemical activity; when the content was more than 20%, it led to a decrease of strength because of an increase of harmful pore ratio and a weakening of the interface transition zone (ITZ), where the stress concentration and damage when loading are easier to occur. At last, a time-varying compressive strength model of ASC considering the harmful pore ratio variation and heterogeneous nucleation effect was established based on the discussion, published date, and American Concrete Institute (ACI) model, which agrees well with the experimental results and can easily predict the strength of concrete.

Abstract:In order to optimize the efficiency and safety of gas hydrate extraction, it is essential to develop a credible constitutive model for sands containing hydrates. A model incorporating both cementation and damage was constructed to describe the behavior of hydrate-bearing cemented sand. This model is based on the critical state theory and builds upon previous studies. The damage factor Ds is incorporated to consider soil degradation and the reduction in hydrate cementation, as described by plastic shear strain. A computer program was developed to simulate the mechanisms of cementation and damage evolution, as well as the stress-strain curves of hydrate-bearing cemented sand. The results indicate that the model replicates the mechanical behavior of soil cementation and soil deterioration caused by impairment well. By comparing the theoretical curves with the experimental data, the compliance of the model was calculated to be more than 90 percent. The new state-dependent elasto-plastic constitutive model based on cementation and damage of hydrate-bearing cemented sand could provide vital guidance for the construction of deep-buried tunnels, extraction of hydrocarbon compounds, and development of resources.

Micromechanics-based multimechanism bounding surface model for sands

Abstract:Within the multimechanism framework, a micromechanics-based sand model is presented based upon the bounding surface and critical state theories. This model follows the assumption that the macroscopic responses of sands can be determined by summing the contributions from a macroscopic volumetric mechanism and an infinite number of virtual microscopic shear mechanisms in various orientations. Each virtual shear mechanism characterizes the microscopic shear deformations and the dilatancy-induced volumetric deformations in three mutually perpendicular directions. The deformations in each direction are described by using a microscopic shear stress–strain relationship founded upon the bounding surface theory and a microscopic stress–dilatancy relationship, respectively. The shear strength with the SMP yield criterion and the stress–dilatancy relationship introduce a state variable for compatibility with the critical state theory. The correlations between the microscopic and macroscopic model parameters are established, and most of them are defined by soil parameters with a clear physical meaning. With a spatial distribution of microscopic shear mechanisms, the model can intrinsically consider the stress-induced anisotropy, the non-coaxial behaviour of stress and strain increment in their principal directions, and the effect induced by principal stress rotations without requiring additional model parameters. The comparison of the simulated and experimental results indicates its excellent capability in predicting sand responses in stress–strain curve as well as stress path under different drainage and loading conditions.
A Damage Model of Concrete including Hysteretic Effect under Cyclic Loading

Abstract:A novel damage model for concrete has been developed, which can reflect the complex hysteresis phenomena of concrete under cyclic loading, as well as other nonlinear behaviors such as stress softening, stiffness degradation, and irreversible deformation. The model cleverly transforms the complex multiaxial stress state into a uniaxial state by equivalent strain, with few computational parameters and simple mathematical expression. The uniaxial tensile and compressive stress-strain curves matching the actual characteristics are used to accommodate the high asymmetry of concrete in tension and compression, respectively. Meanwhile, an unloading path and a reloading path that can reflect the hysteresis effect under cyclic loading of concrete are established, in which the adopted expressions for the loading and unloading characteristic points do not depend on the shape of the curve. The proposed model has a concise form that can be easily implemented and also shows strong generality and flexibility. Finally, the reliability and correctness of the model are verified by comparing the numerical results with the three-point bending beam test, cyclic loading test, and a seismic damage simulation of the Koyna gravity dam.

Abstract:An anisotropic damage model for concrete subjected to compressive fatigue loading is developed based on continuum damage mechanics with the concept of bounding surface. The damage and stress-strain relationships for concrete between monotonic and fatigue loading are obtained by means of the assumption of uniqueness deformation. The related parameters of the model are regressed by the test results of monotonic, single stage fatigue and the combination of multi-stage fatigue and monotonic of the paper. The comparison indicates a good agreement between the theory and the experiment results.

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of the sandstone at the dam site is important to the stability of the hydropower station to be built in Southwest China. A series of triaxial compression tests under different confining pressures were conducted in the laboratory. The critical stresses were determined and the relationship between the critical stress and confining pressure were analyzed. The Young’s modulus increases non-linearly with the confining pressure while the plastic strain increment Nφ and the dilation angle φ showed a negative response. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests showed that the failure of the sandstone under compression is a coupled process of crack growth and frictional sliding. Based on the experimental results, a coupled elastoplastic damage model was proposed within the irreversible thermodynamic framework. The plastic deformation and damage evolution were described by using the micromechanical homogenization method. The plastic flow is inherently driven by the damage evolution. Furthermore, a numerical integration algorithm was developed to simulate the coupled elastoplastic damage behavior of sandstone. The main inelastic properties of the sandstone were well captured. The model will be implemented into the finite element method (FEM) to estimate the excavation damaged zones (EDZs) which can provide a reference for the design and construction of such a huge hydropower project.

Abstract:The strength of frozen soil is a crucial criterion to judge the excavation of cross-passages or tunnels during artificial ground freezing. To better understand the combined influence of the temperature and confining pressure on the strength of frozen soil during freezing, typically triaxial compression tests were carried out on Harbin frozen sand under various temperatures and confining pressures. A nonlinear strength criterion considering the coupled experiment conditions was established according to the results obtained from the triaxial compression tests. Based on continuum damage mechanics, a modified statistical damage constitutive model was derived, in which the Weibull distribution was employed to describe the development of microcracks and defects, and the element strength was considered a random variable. The undetermined parameters in the model were solved using the nonlinear programming method. The effectiveness of the proposed model was verified by comparing the calculated and experimental results. The results indicate that the proposed model can reflect the nonlinear characteristics of the soil strength and accurately predict the stress—strain relationship of frozen sand, especially the phenomenon of pressure melting caused by high confining pressure.

A multiscale micromechanics-based progressive damage model is developed to investigate the overall mechanical behavior and the interfacial microcrack evolutions of the cementitious composites featuring superabsorbent polymer (SAP) under uniaxial tension. Elastic properties, progressive damage process, and homogenization procedure of cementitious composites are systematically integrated in this model. The effective elastic moduli of the composites are determined based on a multiscale micromechanical framework. According to the small strain assumption, the total strain tensor and the elastic-damage compliance tensor are additively decomposed into elastic and damage-induced components. The damage-induced strains and compliances are then deduced from micromechanics. To characterize the progressive elastic-damage induced by microcracks, stages of microcrack propagation are identified from the interface contact stress and the matrix cleavage stress. The complex potentials and stress intensity factors for kinked interface cracks are derived from the distributed dislocations method. By implementing the homogenization process, the macroscopic mechanical behavior is obtained from the micro/mesoscale. The results indicate that the material parameters have clear mechanical significance. Different parameters, such as the SAP addition ratio, aggregate content, initial interfacial crack size, and initial interfacial crack location, are revealed to be influential in the overall mechanical behavior of the composites. The proposed model can be generalized to other particle-reinforced composites with different constituent properties, which can potentially contribute to the design and optimization of durable composites.

Abstract:The freeze–thaw (F-T) cycle is one of the weathering factors that can cause rapid deterioration of the mechanical properties of rocks and threaten the stability and durability of rock engineering in cold regions. To study the influence of F-T action on the mechanical and deformation characteristics of sandstone, triaxial compression tests were performed under four confining pressures (0, 1, 3, and 5 MPa) and five F-T cycles (0, 40, 80, 120, and 160). The experimental results show that the stress–strain curves of the sandstone after F-T cycles can be divided into four phases: compaction, elasticity, strain-hardening, and postpeak failure. According to the deformation behaviors of the sandstone with various F-T cycles, an elastoplastic damage constitutive equation was established considering the compaction effect and F-T action. The model parameters were determined, and the theoretical curves were calculated. The comparisons with theoretical and experimental stress–strain curves demonstrate that the formulated constitutive equation can reflect the key deformation stages and mechanical behaviors of sandstone with different F-T cycles. Because the damage variable is introduced in establishing the model, the proposed model can also provide a quantitative description of the macrodamage, which agrees well with the microdamage of the sandstone after many F-T cycles measured by acoustic emission (AE) technology. The formulated constitutive equation in this paper can well describe the experimental deformation curves of sandstone with various F-T cycles and is easy to embed into numerical analysis software. The results can provide a certain theoretical reference for the evaluation of the durability and stability of rock engineering structures impacted by F-T-induced damage in cold regions.

Abstract:As a new type of construction material, aeolian sand is rich in resources, if can be fully utilized to alleviate the shortage of natural fine aggregates and meet the concept of sustainable development. In this study, the indoor tests of aeolian sand concrete under different water-binder ratio, sand rate and aeolian sand replacement rate were carried out. Combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), the internal relationship between pore structure and mechanical properties of aeolian sand concrete with different factors was explored and revealed its influence mechanism. Using grey correlation entropy analysis, the pore structure-strength model with the most probable pore size, the proportion of harmless pores and the harmless porosity as dependent variables was established. The results show that the compressive strength decreases with increase of water-binder ratio, and increases first and then decreases with increase of sand rate and aeolian sand replacement rate. According to the microstructure and pore size distribution curve, it is found that the proportion of harmless pore is the decisive factor affecting the compressive strength. The increase of water-binder ratio will increase the local porosity weakens its mechanical properties, the appropriate sand rate and aeolian sand replacement rate improve the interface transition zone structure and pore size distribution range, refine the pore structure, and then enhance its compressive strength. The pore structure-strength model with the most probable pore size, proportion of harmless pores and harmless porosity as the dependent variables is established, which can accurately predict concrete strength.

Abstract:An energy‐based isotropic elastoplastic damage model is developed for investigating the elastoplastic damage responses and stress–strain relationships of nano‐silica incorporated concrete. The formulation employs a multiscale micromechanical framework to determine the effective elastic properties of composites at different scales. The stress–strain constitutive relation is derived by splitting the strain tensor into "elastic‐damage" and "plastic‐damage" parts while introducing the homogenized free potential energy function and the undamaged potential energy function. The elastoplastic damage response of the material is further characterized by elastic–plastic‐damage coupling. To construct realistic 3D three‐phase concrete mesostructures in numerical simulations, this paper introduces an encapsulation placement method that avoids particle overlap checking when placing aggregates. This methodology allows adjustments for the aggregate compactness as needed and enhances computational efficiency in concrete mesostructure construction. The numerical results of the modeling show good agreement with the experimental values in the open literature. Further, the influence of nano‐silica addition contents and ITZ (interfacial transition zone) thicknesses on the elastoplastic damage response of nano‐silica incorporated concrete are quantitatively and qualitatively investigated for the optimization of nano‐silica incorporated cementitious composites. The proposed model facilitates simulating and optimizing the mechanical characteristics of nano‐silica incorporated concrete and enhances the computational efficiency of 3D concrete modeling with the introduced encapsulation placement method.

Effects of Cyclic Wetting-Drying on the Mechanical Behavior and Improved Damage Model for Sandstone

Abstract:The degradation of rock mechanical behavior after cyclic wetting and drying could affect the stability of rock slope, embankment, and tunnel significantly. A series of tests were first conducted on sandstone collected from a reservoir bank slope. The results showed that the mechanical parameters (including tensile strength, uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, and internal friction angle) decrease as the cyclic number of wetting and drying increases. Then, a damage variable, which can consider the combined influence of cyclic wetting-drying and loading, was first proposed based on test results. Further, an improved damage model, which considers the effect of cyclic wetting-drying on internal friction angle and the nonlinear deformation characteristics in the fissure closure stage, was established with statistical damage mechanics. The determination method for the parameters in the proposed damage model was also introduced. Finally, the effectiveness of proposed model was verified by comparing with experimental data. The verification indicates that the results from the improved model agree well with test results, and the improved model can enhance the prediction accuracy over the original model.
An improved damage-plasticity material model for concrete subjected to dynamic loading

Abstract:Appropriate material model will provide more accurate predictions for the mechanical response and damage mode of concrete structures, and thus developing a material model that is more consistent with the dynamic behavior of concrete has an important significance to obtain better numerical results. In this paper, an improved damage-plasticity material model for concrete is presented to predict its mechanical response subjected to dynamic loading. Based on the current extent of damage, the failure strength surface is modified through linearly interpolating between the maximum and yield strength surfaces or the maximum and residual strength surfaces. The shear, compacted and tensile damage are separately defined, and a unified hardening/softening function associated with the shear and compacted damage is introduced as the prediction of strain hardening and softening behaviors under compression. The Lode angle effect is considered for describing the reduction of shear strength on the compressive meridian, and the strain rate effect is considered by the radial enhancement method. The calibration method of material parameters is suggested according to the existing experimental data and empirical equations. The feasibility and accuracy of this improved concrete model are verified by the single element validation, and its performance improvement is discussed by comparing with the popular material models for concrete. The experiments and numerical simulations of split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) are conducted for concrete and cement to further verify the validity and accuracy of this improved concrete model.

Abstract:A series of triaxial compression tests under confining pressures of 0, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 MPa and lateral extension tests under initial confining pressures of 10, 15 and 20 MPa are conducted. Compared to the test results under loading and unloading conditions, lateral deformation is more sensitive than the axial deformation under unloading process. According to the characteristic of volume strain, the stress–strain curves can be divided into five phases: initial nonlinear compaction, linear elastic, stable crack growth, unstable crack growth and post-peak stage. The experimental results show that dominant failure mode of both tests is shear failure. The failure mode becomes more complex at the confining pressure of 20 MPa in the lateral extension test, consisting of shear and tensile failures. Based on experimental results, a coupled elasto-plastic damage model is proposed using a nonlinear yield function in the p–q plane, using a non-associated plastic potential function in the irreversible thermodynamic framework. The isotropic damage evolution model is formulated with plastic coupling. The numerical simulation results using the coupled model agree well with the experimental data of the fine-grained sandstone, indicating that this model can describe the main mechanical behaviours of the rock under complex loading conditions.

Abstract:In the frame of the continuous damage theory, a damage model for soil-cement mixture is proposed using the unified form with one set of parameters, based on experimental observations. The suggested model can reflect its main mechanical properties: as the confining pressure increases, the strength and strain at peak stress increase remarkably and the stress-strain relations change from strain-softening to strain-hardening while the volumetric strain changes from dilatation to contraction. All the parameters can be calibrated by a group of conventional triaxial tests. Hollow cylinder tests with complicated stress states were conducted to verify the damage model. The results predicted by the damage model agree well with the tests, which implies that the damage model can be applied to complicated stress states.

Abstract:This paper presents a damage constitutive equation capturing the feature of strain localization and, on this basis, proposes a novel damage constitutive model for concrete under uniaxial compression. It is found that the proposed model can better simulate the stiffness degradation behavior of concrete under cyclic loading, well reproduce the dependency of the post-peak stress-strain curve on specimen or measuring length under monotonic loading, and provide FE simulation results that are insensitive to mesh size. Influence of the maximum aggregate size on the strain localization zone length is discussed.
