Abstract:Originally conceived as a thought experiment, an apparatus consisting of two Stern–Gerlach apparatuses joined in an inverted manner touched on the fundamental question of the reversibility of evolution in quantum mechanics. Theoretical analysis showed that uniting the two partial beams requires an extreme level of experimental control, making the proposal in its original form unrealizable in practice. In this work, we revisit the above question in a numerical study concerning the possibility of partial-beam recombination in a spin-coherent manner. Using the Suzuki–Trotter numerical method of wave propagation and a configurable, approximation-free magnetic field, a simulation of a transversal Stern–Gerlach interferometer under ideal conditions is performed. The result confirms what has long been hinted at by theoretical analyses: the transversal Stern–Gerlach interferometer quantum dynamics is fundamentally irreversible even when perfect control of the associated magnetic fields and beams is assumed.

Hawking-Unruh radiation as irreversible consequence of radiative action in dynamics

Abstract:Hawking-Unruh thermal state of warm surrounding field encountered in non-inertial frames is shown to be a real phenomenon, a marker of nonstationary dynamic evolutions. In accelerated motion of a charged particle it is shown that the recoiled damping effect of Larmor radiation relaxation leads to distinctive thermal power, which is akin to that of Hawking-Unruh radiation from warm surrounding field of the accelerated charge. The damping effect from recoil-momentum of transverse electromagnetic field is worked out by considering torque imparted to the inherently existing angular evolution of spherically polarized vacuum field around the point-like charged particle in acceleration. Hawking-Unruh effects is generally noted to be a universal marker of decoherence in evolution in all scales of microscopic, macroscopic and megascopic systems. Besides detailing the case of electrodynamics, the various efficacies of H-U relaxation are considered in the nonstationary evolutions.

Abstract:The exploration of quantum phenomena in a curved spacetime is an emerging interdisciplinary area at the interface between general relativity<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0537-1#ref-CR4">4</a>, thermodynamics<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0537-1#ref-CR6">6</a> and quantum information<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0537-1#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0537-1#ref-CR8">8</a>. One famous prediction in this field is Unruh thermal radiation<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0537-1#ref-CR3">3</a>—the manifestation of thermal radiation from a Minkowski vacuum when viewed in an accelerating reference frame. Here, we report the experimental observation of a matter field with thermal fluctuations that agree with Unruh's predictions. The matter field is generated within a framework for the simulation of quantum physics in a non-inertial frame, based on Bose–Einstein condensates that are parametrically modulated<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0537-1#ref-CR9">9</a> to make their evolution replicate the frame transformation. We further observe long-range phase coherence and temporal reversal of the matter-wave radiation, hallmarks that distinguish Unruh radiation from its classical counterpart. Our demonstration offers a new avenue for the investigation of the dynamics of quantum many-body systems in a curved spacetime.

Perturbative Unidirectional Invisibility

Abstract:We outline a general perturbative method of evaluating scattering features of finite-range complex potentials and use it to examine complex perturbations of a rectangular barrier potential. In optics, these correspond to modulated refractive index profiles of the form $n(x)=n_0+f(x)$, where $n_0$ is real, $f(x)$ is complex-valued, and $|f(x)|\ll1\leq n_0$. We give a comprehensive description of the phenomenon of unidirectional invisibility for such media, proving five general theorems on its realization in ${\cal PT}$-symmetric and non-${\cal PT}$-symmetric material. In particular, we establish the impossibility of unidirectional invisibility for ${\cal PT}$-symmetric samples whose refractive index has a constant real part and show how a simple scaling transformation of a unidirectionally invisible ${\cal PT}$-symmetric index profile with $n_0=1$ may be used to generate a hierarchy of unidirectionally invisible ${\cal PT}$-symmetric index profiles with $n_0>1$. The results pertaining unidirectional invisibility for $n_0>1$ open up the way for the experimental studies of this phenomenon in a variety of active material. As an application of our general results, we show that a medium with $n(x)=n_0+\zeta e^{iK x}$, $\zeta$ and $K$ real, and $|\zeta|\ll 1$ can support unidirectional invisibility only for $n_0=1$. We then construct unidirectionally invisible index profiles of the form $n(x)=n_0+\sum_\ell z_\ell e^{iK_\ell x}$, with $z_\ell$ complex, $K_\ell$ real, $|z_\ell|\ll 1$, and $n_0>1$.

Abstract:We consider the so-called Hopfield model for the electromagnetic field in a dielectric dispersive medium in a framework in which one allows a space-time dependence of microscopic parameters, aimed to a phenomenological description of a space-time varying dielectric perturbation induced by means of the Kerr effect. We discuss the analogue Hawking effect, by first analyzing the geometrical optics for the Hopfield model, and then by introducing a simplified model which has the bonus to avoid many difficulties which are involved in the full Hopfield model, still keeping the same dispersion relation. Amplitude calculations are indicated, and generalized Manley-Rowe identities are derived in a quantum scattering theory framework. Our main result is an analytical calculation of the spontaneous thermal emission in the single-branch case, which is provided non perturbatively for the first time in the framework of dielectric black holes. An universal mechanism for thermality between optical black holes and acoustic black holes is also pointed out.

Abstract:A two-photon emission of a medium with periodically time-dependent refractive index is considered. The emission results from the zero-point fluctuations of the medium. Usually this emission is very weak. However, it can be strongly enhanced if the resonant condition $\omega_0$ = 2.94 $c/l_0$ is fulfilled (here $\omega_0$ and $l_0 $ are the frequency and the amplitude of the oscillations of the optical length of the medium, respectively). Besides, a medium with resonant oscillations of the optical length performs the phase conjugated reflection with high efficiency. A similar resonant enhancement of the two-quantum emission of other bosons is also predicted.

Abstract:The Unruh effect is a well-understood phenomenon, where one considers a vacuum state of a quantum field in Minkowski spacetime, which appears to be thermally populated for a uniformly accelerating Rindler observer. In this article, we derive a variant of the Unruh effect involving two distinct accelerating observers and aim to address the following questions: (i) Is it possible to selectively thermalize a subset of momentum modes for the case of massless scalar fields, and (ii) Is it possible to excite only the left-handed massless fermions while keeping right-handed fermions in a vacuum state or vice versa? To this end, we consider a Rindler wedge $R_1$ constructed from a class of accelerating observers and another Rindler wedge $R_2$ (with $R_2 \subset R_1$) constructed from another class of accelerating observers such that the wedge $R_2$ is displaced along a null direction w.r.t $R_1$ by a parameter $\Delta$. By first considering a massless scalar field in the $R_1$ vacuum, we show that if we choose the displacement $\Delta$ along one null direction, the positive momentum modes are thermalized, whereas negative momentum modes remain in vacuum (and vice versa if we choose the displacement along the other null direction). We then consider a massless fermionic field in a vacuum state in $R_1$ and show that the reduced state in $R_2$ is such that the left-handed fermions are excited and are thermal for large frequencies. In contrast, the right-handed fermions have negligible particle density and vice versa. We argue that the toy models involving shifted Rindler spacetime may provide insights into the particle excitation aspects of evolving horizons and the possibility of Rindler spacetime having a quantum strand of hair. Additionally, based on our work, we hypothesize that massless fermions underwent selective chiral excitations during the radiation-dominated era of cosmology.

Abstract:When confined within an optical cavity light can exert strong radiation pressure forces. Combined with dynamical backaction, this enables important processes, such as laser cooling, and applications ranging from precision sensors to quantum memories and interfaces. However, the magnitude of radiation pressure forces is constrained by the energy mismatch between photons and phonons. Here, we overcome this barrier using entropic forces arising from the absorption of light. We show that entropic forces can exceed the radiation pressure force by eight orders of magnitude and demonstrate this using a superfluid helium third-sound resonator. We develop a framework to engineer the dynamical backaction from entropic forces, applying it to achieve phonon lasing with a threshold three orders of magnitude lower than previous work. Our results present a pathway to exploit entropic forces in quantum devices and to study nonlinear fluid phenomena such as turbulence and solitons.

Abstract:Atomically strong light pulses can drive sub-optical-cycle dynamics. When the Rabi frequency—the rate of energy exchange between light and matter—exceeds the optical carrier frequency, fascinating non-perturbative strong-field phenomena emerge, such as high-harmonic generation and lightwave transport. Here, we explore a related novel subcycle regime of ultimately strong light–matter interaction without a coherent driving field. We use the vacuum fluctuations of nanoantennas to drive cyclotron resonances of two-dimensional electron gases to vacuum Rabi frequencies exceeding the carrier frequency. Femtosecond photoactivation of a switch element inside the cavity disrupts this 'deep-strong coupling' more than an order of magnitude faster than the oscillation cycle of light. The abrupt modification of the vacuum ground state causes spectrally broadband polarization oscillations confirmed by our quantum model. In the future, this subcycle shaping of hybrid quantum states may trigger cavity-induced quantum chemistry, vacuum-modified transport or cavity-controlled superconductivity, opening new scenarios for non-adiabatic quantum optics.

Abstract:In this work we examine and extend the proposal of reference \cite{Rosabal:2018hkx}, concerning the new interpretation on the Unruh effect. The vacuum processes in Minkowski and Rindler space are described in detail, in connection with the observers perspective. We highlight the presence of antiparticles in the radiation, which is perhaps the main observation in the cited reference. We present a new derivation of the vacuum energy in Rindler space using the Schrödinger kernel. The quest for the Unruh radiation could be expanded by considering the possibility of detecting the antiparticles in it. A proposal for the experimental confirmation of the antiparticles in the radiation is presented.

On refractive processes in strong laser field quantum electrodynamics

Abstract:Refractive processes in strong-field QED are pure quantum processes, which involve only external photons and the background electromagnetic field. We show analytically that such processes occurring in a plane-wave field and involving external real photons are all characterized by a surprisingly modest net exchange of energy and momentum with the laser field, corresponding to a few laser photons, even in the limit of ultra-relativistic laser intensities. We obtain this result by a direct calculation of the transition matrix element of an arbitrary refractive QED process and accounting exactly for the background plane-wave field. A simple physical explanation of this modest net exchange of laser photons is provided, based on the fact that the laser field couples with the external photons only indirectly through virtual electron-positron pairs. For stronger and stronger laser fields, the pairs cover a shorter and shorter distance before they annihilate again, such that the laser can transfer to them an energy corresponding to only a few photons. These results can be relevant for future experiments aiming to test strong-field QED at present and next-generation facilities.

Abstract:This work considers the way that quantum loop effects modify the propagation of light in curved space. The calculation of the refractive index for scalar QED is reviewed and then extended for the first time to QED with spinor particles in the loop. It is shown how, in both cases, the low frequency phase velocity can be greater than c, as found originally by Drummond and Hathrell, but causality is respected in the sense that retarded Green functions vanish outside the lightcone. A "phenomenology" of the refractive index is then presented for black holes, FRW universes and gravitational waves. In some cases, some of the polarization states propagate with a refractive index having a negative imaginary part indicating a potential breakdown of the optical theorem in curved space and possible instabilities.

Near-field dynamical Casimir effect

Abstract:We propose the dynamical Casimir effect in a time-modulated near-field system. The system consists of two bodies made of polaritonic materials, that are brought in close proximity to each other, and the modulation frequency is approximately twice the relevant resonance frequencies of the system. We develop a rigorous fluctuational electrodynamics formalism to explore the produced Casimir flux, associated with the degenerate as well as non-degenerate two-polariton emission processes. We have identified flux contributions from both quantum and thermal fluctuations at finite temperatures, with a dominant quantum contribution even at room temperature under the presence of a strong near-field effect. We have conducted a nonclassicality test for the total radiative flux at finite temperatures, and shown that nonclasscical states of emitted photons can be obtained for a high temperature up to $\sim 250\,$K. Our findings open an avenue for the exploration of dynamical Casimir effect beyond cryogenic temperatures, and may be useful for creating tunable nanoscale nonclassical light sources.

Quantum theory of non-hermitian optical binding between nanoparticles

Abstract:Recent experiments demonstrate highly tunable non-reciprocal coupling between levitated nanoparticles due to optical binding [Rieser et al., Science 377, 987 (2022)]. In view of recent experiments cooling nanoparticles to the quantum regime, we here develop the quantum theory of small dielectric objects interacting via the forces and torques induced by scattered tweezer photons. The interaction is fundamentally non-hermitian and accompanied by correlated quantum noise. We present the corresponding Markovian quantum master equation, show how to reach non-reciprocal and unidirectional coupling, and identify unique quantum signatures of optical binding. Our work provides the theoretical tools for exploring and exploiting the rich quantum physics of non-reciprocally coupled nanoparticle arrays.

Exact solutions for analog Hawking effect in dielectric media

Abstract:In the framework of the analog Hawking radiation for dielectric media, we analyze a toy-model and also the 2D reduction of the Hopfield model for a specific monotone and realistic profile for the refractive index. We are able to provide exact solutions, which do not require any weak dispersion approximation. The theory of Fuchsian ordinary differential equations is the basic tool for recovering exact solutions, which are rigoroulsy identified, and involve the so-called generalized hypergeometric functions $_4F_3(\alpha_1,\alpha_2,\alpha_3,\alpha_4;\beta_1,\beta_2,\beta_3;z)$. A complete set of connection formulas are available, both for the subcritical case and for the transcritical one, and also the Stokes phenomenon occurring in the problem is fully discussed. From the physical point of view, we focus on the problem of thermality. Under suitable conditions, the Hawking temperature is deduced, and we show that it is in fully agreement with the expression deduced in other frameworks under various approximations.

The Fractal Structure of Matter and the Casimir Effect

Abstract:The zero-point radiation is an electromagnetic form of energy pervading the universe. Its existence is granted by standard quantum theories. We provide here an explanation based on deterministic classical electrodynamics, by associating to particles and nuclei a series of shells, made of constrained photons, with frequencies decaying with the distance. Such photons are part of a pre-existing background, evolving in vacuum even at zero temperature, and are captured by stable subatomic particles to form very distinctive quantized patterns. The evolving shells bring, for instance, to the creation of a fractal-type structure of electromagnetic layers around a conductive body. This property is then used to justify, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the attractive Casimir force of two metal plates. The analysis is carried out by standard arguments, except that here the surrounding zero-point energy is finite and, albeit with a very complicated appearance, very well-organized.

Abstract:We study the nonlinear behavior of the electric susceptibility for several systems showing a high index of refraction without absorption due to quantum coherence and interference. Estimates of cw intensity limits for a given index of refraction are obtained. We calculate critical field intensities for self-focusing and investigate the stability of the absorption cancellation with regard to intensity fluctuations.
Rescuing the Unruh Effect in Lorentz Violating Gravity

Abstract:While the robustness of Hawking radiation in the presence of UV Lorentz breaking is well-established, the Unruh effect has posed a challenge, with a large literature concluding that even the low-energy restoration of Lorentz invariance may not be sufficient to sustain this phenomenon. Notably, these previous studies have primarily focused on Lorentz-breaking matter on a conventional Rindler wedge. In this work, we demonstrate that considering the complete structure of Lorentz-breaking gravity, specifically the presence of a hypersurface orthogonal aether field, leads to the selection of a new Rindler wedge configuration characterized by a uniformly accelerated aether flow. This uniform acceleration provides a reference scale for comparison with the Lorentz-breaking one, thus ensuring the persistence of the Unruh effect in this context. We establish this by calculating the expected temperature using a Bogolubov approach, and by analyzing the response of a uniformly accelerated detector. We suggest that this resilience of the Unruh effect opens interesting possibilities towards future developments for using it as a tool to constrain Lorentz breaking theories of gravity.

Effect of photon propagation on a zero refractive index medium

Abstract:We present a model describing the transmission of light through atomic media with a vanishing index of refraction. Zero index materials are of particular interest as the infinite phase velocity of light within the material offers the potential to manipulate electromagnetic waves to mediate dipole-dipole interactions over extended distances. We focus on the preparation of zero-index conditions based on atomic coherence using two distinct atomic media as exemplary of generic zero-index materials. We establish a model based on the Maxwell-Bloch equations to describe the propagation of a light pulse through these media. To investigate the sustainability of the zero index under minimal light conditions, we assume single-photon intensity of the propagating pulse. Specifically, we examine whether the spatial phase change of the photon remains zero as it traverses the medium. We employ a finite-element numerical approach to solve the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations describing the photon propagation. Our results indicate that the presence of a photon within the medium will disrupt the zero-index state, thus disallowing the establishment of enhanced dipole-dipole interactions over large distances.

Decoherence due to Casimir effect?

Abstract:Open system dynamics of an electron is studied in the presence of radiation field, confined between two parallel conducting pates. It has been suggested in previous works that the quantized zero-point modes of this field lead to finite decoherence effects, possibly due to the Casimir force. However, in this work it is shown that the off-diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix of the electron are suppressed due to the sudden switching on of the interaction with the environment, and would not be observationally relevant in typical scenarios. The work clarifies important theoretical aspects of the setup and argues that any irreversible loss of coherence, in general, should not be ascribed to vacuum fluctuations. It can only originate from emission of bremsstrahlung by the electron, due to the acceleration caused by the effective Coulomb potential of all the infinite image charges.
