Abstract:The paper addresses a controller design approach for nonlinear systems based on a staged-transformation technique. A new nonlinear state transformation is proposed to transform a complex single-input nonlinear system into a simple intermediate nonlinear model, a nonlinear state feedback is then introduced to transform the intermediate nonlinear model into a linear controllable canonical form. The optimal nonlinear controller to the primitive nonlinear system is derived via a staged-design method. Furthermore, an optimal tracking control law for nonlinear systems is developed. The simulation result of an inverted pendulum example shows that this approach is quite effective, and the nonlinear controller is robust to parameter perturbations.

The first introductory part of the paper deals with the actual problem of manipulator control. The second part deals with the control of dynamic systems and the formulation of the control problem. Abstract:A new "model-free" control methodology is applied to a boost power converter. The properties of the boost converter allow to evaluate the performances of the model-free strategy in the case of switching nonlinear transfer functions, regarding load variations. Our approach, which utilizes "intelligent" PI controllers, does not require any converter model identification while ensuring the stability and the robustness of the controlled system. Simulation results show that, with a simple control structure, the proposed control method is almost insensitive to fluctuations and large load variations.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a direct multirate adaptive control algorithm that ensures global stabilization of a class of (potentially unstable and invertible) linear time-invariant discrete-time plants of known order and relative degree one. An essential feature of our scheme is that no projections are needed, no appeal is made to the persistence of excitation arguments for the stability proof and it has a better transient performance than existing schemes. The implementation of the controller requires some prior information about its Markov parameters, namely, upper and lower bounds on the systems impulse response. It is directly applicable to plants with interlacing real poles and zeros, i.e., with Cauchy index equal to the plant order, provided the adaptation gain is restricted to be smaller than some value determined by the measure of relative primeness of the pole and zero polynomial. This class contains some practically interesting systems, for instance, resistor-inductor or resistance-capacitance circuits.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to provide a simple model-free solution to the loss problem of accuracy in system model inherent in the existing finite control-set (FCS) model predictive control for power converter systems with uncertain dynamics. To be more precise, the core idea behind the solution is to construct an invariance manifold-based unknown system dynamics estimator in a simple way by introducing a first-order low-pass filter into the FCS model-free predictive control framework. In the developed framework, the estimator is updated in real time to approximate the unknown nonlinear system dynamics, leading to considerable enhancement of robustness. Dissimilar to the state-of-the-art model-free predictive control methods, our development advocates a simple and straightforward structure, since it does not require the widely applied function approximators and weighting factors, while ensuring satisfactory system performances than the existing ones. Further, the convergence analysis of the developed estimator is manifested. Finally, we underline its merits with different benchmark examples from the literature.

Abstract:A universal robust control approach is proposed to stabilise a class of nonlinear systems. The system contains both nonlinear dynamics uncertainty and an unknown control direction, which is the multiplier of the control term. Being different from most previous studies, the unknown control direction is allowed to switch its sign in this article. A new Nussbaum gain technique is designed and integrated with robust controller to tackle the sign-switching unknown control direction. It is proven that the proposed control approach can yield asymptotic stabilisation and guarantee the boundedness of the closed-loop signals. In addition, these results can be readily extended to tracking problems under a different assumption.

Abstract:The paper presents a new tracking control approach for a class of non-minimum phase linear systems. The proposed approach consists of two parts: trajectory planning and tracking controller design. The trajectory planning is solved as an optimization problem to improve the achievable transient performance under the fundamental constraints associated with perfect tracking of non-minimum phase systems. The recently proposed adaptive robust tracking controller for a class of non-minimum phase systems is then applied to guarantee that the tracking error dynamics can be stabilized with bounded internal states. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated through simulation on tracking control of a second order non-minimum phase linear system. Further works are underway to extend the proposed control strategy and trajectory design to a class of non-minimum phase nonlinear systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate the use of a new, control-oriented notion of finite state approximation for a particular class of hybrid systems. Specifically, we consider the problem of designing a stabilizing binary output feedback switching controller for a pair of unstable homogeneous second order systems. The constructive approach presented in this note, in addition to yielding an explicit construction of a deterministic finite state approximate model of the hybrid plant, allows us to efficiently establish a useable upper bound on the quality of approximation, and leads to a discrete optimization problem whose solution immediately provides a certifiably correct-by-design controller for the original system. The resulting controller consists of a finite state observer for the plant and a corresponding full state feedback switching control law.

Abstract:As a well understood classical fact, non- minimum phase zeros of the process located in a feedback connection cannot be cancelled by the corresponding poles of controller since such a cancellation leads to internal instability. This impossibility of cancellation is the source of many limitations in dealing with the feedback control of non-minimum phase processes. The aim of this paper is to study the possibility and usefulness of partial (fractional-order) cancellation of such zeros for undershoot-less control of non-minimum phase processes. In this method first the non-minimum phase zero of the process is cancelled to an arbitrary degree by the proposed pre-compensator and then a classical controller is designed to control the series connection of these two systems. Since plants with multiple non-minimum phase zeros and oscillatory poles are very common in the problems related to robotics, the proposed method is applied to these systems to confirm its effectiveness.

Abstract:Journal of Vibration and Control, Ahead of Print. This study presents a generalised framework for model-free robust decentralised control (MFRDC) of interconnected MIMO dynamic systems, with the goal of significantly reducing complexity in model-based design. A model-free robust sliding mode control, by Lyapunov differential inequality, is presented to achieve simultaneous nonlinear, dynamic, interaction/coupling inversion/cancellation (NDII) for such MIMO systems, which treats the plant/process as a total uncertainty from input to output. The U-control platform is presented, to integrate separately independently designed NDII and an invariant controller (IC) into a complete double loop control system. The associated robust stability and other properties are analysed to provide reference for applications. Two simulated tracking control tests are presented for functionally numerical demonstration, validation of the analytical results and illustration of the transparent procedure for general expansion/applications. These are: a coupled inverted pendulum and a two-input and two-output (TITO) non-affine nonlinear dynamic plant.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of stability analysis and control synthesis of switched systems in the discrete-time domain. The approach followed in this paper looks at the existence of a switched quadratic Lyapunov function to check asymptotic stability of the switched system under consideration. Two different linear matrix inequality-based conditions allow to check the existence of such a Lyapunov function. The first one is classical while the second is new and uses a slack variable, which makes it useful for design problems. These two conditions are proved to be equivalent for stability analysis. Investigating the static output feedback control problem, we show that the second condition is, in this case, less conservative. The reduction of the conservatism is illustrated by a numerical evaluation.

Abstract:This article considers the small-time local controllability (STLC) of switched nonlinear systems (SNSs). First, the original SNS is associated with a nilpotent Lie algebra, on which the solutions of the SNS are approximated by the hybrid Lie power series. Second, the concepts of high-order control variations and bad Lie brackets are defined for SNSs from a geometrical point of view. This helps to establish a new high-order sufficient STLC condition that is closely related to "neutralized" bad Lie brackets. Finally, it is shown that the obtained general condition is compatible with the existing controllability conditions of switched linear systems and nonswitched linear and nonlinear systems.

Robust performance for switched systems with constrained switching and its application to weakly hard real-time control systems

Abstract:Many cyber-physical systems can naturally be formulated as switched systems with constrained switching. This includes systems where one of the signals in the feedback loop may be lost. Possible sources for losses are shared or unreliable communication media in networked control systems, or signals which are discarded, e.g., when using a shared computation device such as a processor in real-time control applications. The use of switched systems with constrained switching is not limited to cyber-physical systems but, includes many other relevant applications such as power systems and modeling virus mutations. In this chapter, we introduce a framework for analyzing and designing controllers which guarantee robust quadratic performance for switched systems with constrained switching. The possible switching sequences are described by the language of a labeled graph where the labels are linked to the different subsystems. The subsystems are allowed to have different input and output dimensions, and their state-space representations can be affected by a broad class of uncertainties in a rational way. The proposed framework exploits ideas from dissipativity-based linear control theory to derive analysis and synthesis inequalities given by linear matrix inequalities. We demonstrate how the proposed framework can be applied to the design of controllers for uncertain weakly hard real-time control systems - a system class naturally appearing in networked and real-time control.

We evaluate its performances regarding output load and supply variations in different working configuration of the microgrid. Our approach, which utilizes "intelligent" PI controllers, does not require any converter or microgrid model identification while ensuring the stability and the robustness of the controlled system. Simulations results show that with a simple control structure, the proposed control method is almost insensitive to fluctuations and large load variations.

Abstract:In the linear systems the estimation-based modular approach is that any stabilizable controller can combine with any standard identifier.The estimation-based modular approach was extended to the robust adaptive control design of uncertain stochastic nonlinear systems.An ISS controller module with strong parametric robust stability was designed.According to the Swapping Technique,an identifier module was designed which consisted of two filters that converted a dynamic parametric model into a static one.Based on least-square algorithm,the parameter update laws were designed and compared with the result of gradient algorithm.The simulation results show the validity of the algorithm.

Abstract:Summary This paper investigates the finite time stabilization problem for a class of nonlinear systems with unknown control directions and unstructured uncertainties. The unstructured uncertainties indicate that not only the parameters but also the structure of the system nonlinearities are uncertain. A new adaptive control method is proposed for the considered system. Logic‐based switching rule is utilized to tune the controller parameters online to stabilize the system in finite time. Different from the existing adaptive controllers for structured/parametric uncertainties, a new switching barrier Lyapunov method and supervisory functions are introduced to overcome the obstacles caused by unstructured uncertainties and unknown control directions. Both simulations and experiments are conducted on mechatronic systems to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:In this letter, a mixed min-switching strategy for the stabilization of positive switched linear systems with unstable subsystems is proposed. With the aid of piecewise continuous switched linear time-varying Lyapunov function method, we give some novel criteria such that the system remains asymptotically stable and apply these results to the stability problem of a simple switched genetic regulatory network. The time-varying state feedback controller is developed to guarantee the system is asymptotically stable under the mixed min-switching signal. Furthermore, numerical examples illustrate that the theoretical results presented in this paper are better than existing ones.

Abstract:This article concentrates on the adaptive neural control for switched nonlinear systems interconnected with unmodeled dynamics. The investigated model consists of two dynamic processes, namely, the x -system and the unmodeled z -dynamics. In this article, we focus on a scenario that the unmodeled z -dynamics do not contain input-to-state practically stable (ISpS) modes, that is, all modes are not ISpS (non-ISpS). First, we design an adaptive neural controller such that each mode of the closed-loop x -system is ISpS with respect to the state of dynamic uncertainties. Then, fast average dwell time (fast ADT) and slow average dwell time (slow ADT) are simultaneously used to limit the switching law. In this way, both the closed-loop x -system and the unmodeled z -dynamics are ISpS under switching. By assigning the ISpS gains with small-gain theorem, we can guarantee that the whole closed-loop system is semiglobal uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB), and meanwhile, the system output is steered to a small region of zero. Finally, simulation examples are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, a model-free sliding mode control technique for linear and nonlinear uncertain multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems is proposed. The developed method does not require a mathematical model of the dynamic system. Instead, the controller relies on state measurements and estimates of the error between previous and current control inputs to stabilize the system. Knowledge of the system’s order, shape of the control input matrix, and control gain bounds, if non-unitary, are the only variables required to develop the controller. Lyapunov’s stability criterion is used in the derivation process to ensure closed-loop asymptotic stability. High frequency chattering, often observed with the sliding mode control method, is eliminated using a smoothing boundary layer. Simulations are performed on a nonlinear two mass-spring-damper system and a quadrotor model to examine the performance of the proposed control law.
